There may be a kernel of truth to the term “digital native” when it comes to children and technology. In its latest communication market report, Ofcom shares that the “peak age for digital understanding is 14-15,” as reported by The Guardian .

The truth of the matter is that kids are learning on their own, with their peers, and in spaces where adults are out of the way.

If the optimal age for leading the way with digital innovation is 14-15, the question we should ask is: “Where are kids learning how to be digital innovators?”

For some time, we have known that kids are fleeing Facebook to get away from their nosy parents. MarketWatch reports :

In her recent book It’s Complicated, author and tech expert danah boyd posits that teens are seeking new spaces in the form of digital media because so many of the physical spaces, in the form of parks and malls, have been stripped away. MarketWatch shares :

We all need to catch up — and catch up soon. The San Jose Mercury News reports that at two California high schools, Northgate High in Walnut Creek and San Jose’s Lincoln High, students had to resort to petitions to get their schools to offer Advanced Placement Computer Science. Schools need to listen to the students and come up with interesting and challenging ways to meet the interest and needs of teens in the area of technology and programming.

2. Provide Opportunities

We need to design and co-create learning experiences where authentic, real-world problem solving is at the core, and where students have to use technology to be able to solve these problems. STEM learning is central to this approach.

3. Assess Focus

We need to be nimble and flexible in our approach to working with teens and technology. If kids are off task in a class setting, we need to constantly ask ourselves if we are using technology as a way to deepen and enhance student learning, or if we are allowing technology to be available without a clear sense of purpose.

4. Constructively Engage

We need to view teens as — and challenge them to become — “the leaders of today, not tomorrow.” If Ofcom is right that teens are at their peak for digital understanding at 14-15, we need to lean into that, and enlist these young minds in making the world a better place. There are a lot of problems that need solving, and a flood of fresh, passionate ideas could really add to the conversation.

Putting Technology Acquisitions Into Context

In my last column, I talked about the effect politics has on technology

decision making, and I got a lot of responses. Seems everyone relates to

politics and the impact it has on corporate behavior.

This time I’d like to expand the context discussion to include the rest

of the variables that influence the technology acquisition, deployment

and support processes… and, for that matter, all corporate behavior.

Politics is one part of the overall context that decisions are made in.

The others include the culture of the company, the quality and character

of the leadership, the financial condition of the company, and the

overall financial state of the industry, the national and global

economies.

The three most obvious pieces of the puzzle include the pursuit of

collaborative business models, technology integration and

interoperability, and, of course the management best practices around

business technology acquisition, deployment and support. Other pieces,

which round out the context that decisions are made in, include politics,

leadership, the economy and culture.

Let’s run through the variables.

As suggested last time, it’s important to assess the political quotient

of your company. Some companies are almost completely political. A few

people make decisions based only on what they think, who they like (and

dislike), and on what’s good for them personally (which may or may not be

good for the company).

Other companies are obsessive-compulsive about data, evidence and

analysis. In the middle, are most of the companies out there, with some

balance between analysis and politics.

Corporate culture is another key decision-making driver.

calculated risks? Crazy risks? Are you early — or late — technology

adopters? Does your culture reward or punish risk takers? When they tell

you to ”think outside the box”, is that code for ”I dare you to

challenge the status quo”? It’s important to assess your corporate

culture accurately. Technology investments must sync with the culture (as

well as the rest of the variables that comprise the total decision-making

context).

What about corporate leadership? Is it smart? Is it old to the point of

nearing retirement? Is everyone already rich? Is everyone still

struggling to get back to where they were in 1999? Is it embattled? Is

the senior management team mature or adolescent? Is it committed to

everyone’s success or just its own? Is it compassionate or unforgiving?

The key here is the overall leadership ability of the senior management

team. There are some really smart, skilled and honorable management teams

out there and there are some really awful ones, as well. Trying to sell a

long-term technology-based solution to a self-centered team with only

their personal wealth in mind simply won’t work. Trying to sell the same

solution to a team that embraces long-term approaches to the creation of

broad shareholder value usually works very well.

How well is the company really doing? Is it making money? More money than

last year? Is it tightening its belt? Has the CIO received yet another

memorandum about reducing technology costs? Is the company growing

Is your industry sector doing well? Are you the only defense contractor

losing money? Or is everyone in the same boat? Is the general economy

looking good or are there regional, national or global red flags? What’s

the confidence level for the sector and the economy? Where’s the smart

money going?

It’s essential to position your company within the larger economic forces

that define national and global bear and bull markets.

Be sure to touch all of these bases as you prepare to launch a new

technology effort. While the business case may be strong, there are other

factors that can dramatically influence the outcome of the process. Pay

very close attention to politics, culture, leadership, the company’s

financials and the overall national and global economies.

If the lights are all red, maybe it’s a bad time to propose any changes

or any large technology investments. But if there are some red, but

mostly yellow and green lights, then perhaps it’s time to work the

Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC India) is one such company that is proving itself quite pragmatic by leveraging AI and machine learning to gain productive outcomes. In an exclusive interview with BARC India EVP – Product Leadership & Technology, Vivekanand Jha explains how artificial intelligence has been a tremendous breakthrough for BARC and for its customers.  

AI in healthcare, retail, construction, cyber security etc, you name it and AI is present in almost all the industries/ sectors possible. How would you define the use of AI by BARC India?

From a T.V. ratings provider to a company of insights helping businesses, it has been a path-breaking journey for BARC India. We, as a company are constantly evolving – from launching unique products to improving client servicing to implementing cutting-edge technology.  At the heart of everything BARC pushes for automation through machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is a necessary component of our work due to the sheer volume of our data. We have TV viewing individual and House Hold (HH) level data with Panel Demography.  AI is used for both capturing the data and to process the data more efficiently by applying human intelligence on large volume of data. We are using AI for speech recognition/Image recognition in different applications and products. AI helps in detecting heterogeneous genre and content tastes (over TG and over time band).  How big a role does AI play in your business? In other words, in your business, where accuracy is everything and companies depend on your insights to set their ad-spends, how big would you say is the role of technology in making these predictions? Technology is key. The data which BARC India collects, compiles, and integrates provides examples of the 5Vs – volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and value. Leveraging such data is not always a straight forward decision. Collecting data from 180,000 individuals’ daily and integrating massive proprietary databases and alternative data sources requires a means for the data to be stored in an efficient, accessible, yet cost effective manner. At the same time, with data this large and variable, human intervention needs to be minimized, therefore requiring usage of the latest in AI and machine learning technologies to automate processes in an accurate fashion. We at BARC, rather than serving as a replacement for human intelligence and ingenuity, take Artificial Intelligence as a supporting tool. We are adept at processing and analyzing troves of data far more quickly and getting synthesized courses of action. In this way, we are using AI to help required output possible consequences of each action and streamline the decision-making process. Our data serves as the currency for the Indian broadcast television industry. It is through this data that broadcasters and agencies make key data-driven decisions relating to programming, strategy, targeting and planning. Providing the data in usable forms in a timely fashion is highly dependent on technology. Improvement is a constant journey at BARC while we continue exploring different technology  

In your business, where Data is King and everything depends on data, how do you ensure data is safe and secure and not manipulated or tampered?

We have implemented enterprise level security architecture with robust perimeter and access controls measures and the entire data path from source to delivery is end to end encrypted. Additionally we are testing with MDM (mobile device management) on all devices used by field force for data collection and survey to ensure end point security controls are in place. Provides single sign-in for all corporate applications (on-premises, SaaS, IaaS) and PIM (privilege identity management in place) and also relevant access controls in place. We have multi-layer firewall and our data fully resideswithin India. Data stored are in code based and its master mapping are stored in system and refereed when required. IT systems and general controls as well as security are validated by renowned security experts from time to chúng tôi have kept on learning and improving on these aspects over a period of time.  

As a measurement company, what is the common difference you see between AI and ML?

AI and ML are the two clichés yet trending and buzzing topics these days. The fact is that many people tend to understand and consider AI and Machine learning as the very same thing. Both the topics are elated to Big Data and Data Science. ML is the subset of AI which addresses the simulation of the intelligent behavior in computers. It helps us to imitate intelligent process defined by business.  How much of an influence does AI actually have on the data crunched by BARC India?  As mentioned earlier, our data serves as the currency for the Indian broadcast television industry. It is through this data that broadcasters and agencies make key data-driven decisions relating to programming, strategy, targeting and planning. Data Crunching for BARC India is about getting valuable insights from the data and sharing it with the industry to add value to their businesses. Turning hidden data into actionable information with ability to influence businesses and process decisions is our practice as a data driven organization. AI combines big data and ML functionality enables IT operations to deliver robust and accurate data to market. For example – Taking a trend of multiple week, we are identifying the exception basis rule defined by users. We then create a tool to hash the variance and threshold and then using this information we can apply ML. The tuning of rules creates the actionable on dashboard and hence help used to deliver data  

Are AI applications being used to foresee and predict trends in the broadcast sector?

Numerous media firms these days are adopting a data first approach to aid growth. What are your thoughts on this? Data is the new OIL. Decision making on gutt used to play a large role in media ecosystem earlier, and while it will continue to do so, it will be aided with more and more data. With data being so pervasive and all available these days, the key is to identify the right data set and integrate that with business decision making leading to a successful growth of the organization

Measure on-page readership with scroll tracking

Tracking the readership of your articles and blog content can be a challenge without some additional setup in Google Analytics. Often, you’ll find that article pages have a very high bounce rate. That’s because the majority of article pages receive single-page visits, meaning users don’t visit any other page while on your site. The result is a lack of data on how people used your page – did they leave because they couldn’t find what they wanted, or were they able to complete what they needed to do?

Scroll tracking is a solution for this, and a must-have for any content-heavy site. This allows you to trigger Google Analytics events when users reach 25, 50, 75, or any other percentage of your choosing in terms of depth on your page. That means you’ll learn what percentage of users actually read an entire page, or at what point on the page they tend to drop off.

You’ll then need to set the following options:

Vertical Scroll Depths – I typically use 25, 50, 75, 90 and 100. Both 90 and 100 are in there as in many cases, users won’t scroll all the way to the very bottom – think about how deep your footer is, especially on mobile. 90% may be a more accurate representation of someone reading an entire article

Horizontal Scroll depths – You can also measure horizontal scrolls, though I rarely use this. Besides, if you’re building websites that go horizontally instead of vertical, you should probably stop!

All Pages or Some Pages – You may only want to apply scroll tracking to a certain subfolder like your blog, or set up multiple sets of scroll tracking with different depth percentages for different templates or areas of the site

Save your settings, publish your changes, and then use preview mode in Tag Manager to test it’s working. The debug console should show your scroll depth events being triggered under the Data Layer tab:

The next step is to set up your Google Analytics Tag using the following steps:

Choose Universal Analytics as the tag type

Name the Category Scroll Depth (include the section of the site if you’ve decided to limit this to a single subfolder rather than the entire site)

For the Action label, use the Page Path variable to pull in the page’s URL

For Label, use the Scroll Depth Threshold. You can add a % symbol after the variable (marked by double curly brackets) so the values you get in your Analytics reports will show as 25%, 50%, etc

Content groupings

You’ll be able to group your content into a logical structure and then analyze aggregated metrics for these groups as well as individual URLs.

If you use WordPress, then this is very easy to set up using Google Tag Manager and the Google Tag Manager for WordPress plugin.
