While I don’t believe much in dwelling on failures and mistakes, I do believe we can learn from them.  Often other people can learn from your failures as well. By sharing these experiences we keep history from repeating itself.  Every year I like to take a look back at my blogging efforts and examine what I’d do differently if I was building my platform today. These mistakes have helped me to determine what I consider the pillars of a successful blog.

1. Purpose/Message/Mission

Knowing the purpose, message, and mission behind your blog when you start is a bit of a double edged sword. If you know what this is when you start consider yourself lucky.  But, you also have to be open to the possibility that it will change because building a platform  is a voyage of self discovery. It’s a professional journey as much as it as a spiritual one.

If you don’t know the purpose, message or mission behind your blog, don’t  worry. In many cases it reveals itself to you. If you’re a business owner you may be thinking this doesn’t apply. If that’s the case I encourage you to go back and the read what corporate blogs could learn from personal blogs.  Once you become clear on the purpose, mission and message of your content, the right people show up in droves. It’s when things go from message to a movement.

 2. Email Newsletter

In a world where people spend half their days on Facebook, it might seem odd that an email newsletter would be so important. Every single blogger or content creator I’ve ever talked to has said that biggest mistake they’ve made was not building their email list sooner.  A book marketing strategist for a New York Times best selling author told me that emails resulted in ten times more book sales than social media.  They may not see your latest status update or tweet but email gives you direct contact to your potential reader or buyer. Another thing to consider about email is that people tend to reveal quite a bit more through email correspondence because it’s private.

3. A Free E-Book/Manifesto

Besides the fact that it will help you build your email list, a free book or manifesto can have several other benefits. We’ve all had those friends who show up at our house late when we’re watching a movie and make us pause the movie to explain what’s happening. In the case of your blog you don’t have the option to pause and do this for every new reader that shows up. A free e-book gives you the option to catch the reader up on your ongoing narrative. It can also cause your ideas to spread:

 Chris Guillebeau wrote a A Brief Guide to World Domination. It was downloaded over 100,000 times and eventually led to a book deal.

Marcus Sheridan at the Sales Lion requires every potential customer to read his free e-book. It helps him eliminate customers who are not a fit, and because of this he has to do no outbound selling.

4. A Product/Business Model

As you build a platform you have to think about what value you’re going to create in exchange for money. There’s no right answer to this. It’s going to be different in every case. But if all you do is produce really good content and build a blog that gets a decent amount of traffic, that doesn’t equate to revenue.

There’s nothing wrong with packaging your content and selling it. In that case one kind of value you create is convenience.  Packaging and repurposing content is how some of the world’s biggest media companies generate tons of revenue. Examples include books turned into movies,  movies released on DVD and tv shows turned into boxed sets. Maybe your model is services.  You might be an expert in a particular field, and your blog serves as a way to market your expertise.

The bottom line is this. It might seem obvious, but you have to sell something on your site to make money.

5. Site Design

In the online world people judge a book by its cover.  I’ve seen people who have really impressive bios with terrible site design. The lousy site design made me question their credibility and lose interest in their content.  Good design completely alters brand perception

 If you can afford to do it, hire a skilled designer. It will be one of the best possible investments you could make  in your platform.

If you can’t afford to hire a designer, embrace simplicity. Use a premium wordpress theme and make the site as clean as possible.

One other mistake I made in the design of my own site was designing based on what I thought would look good.  A valuable lesson I learned was that you need to design your site based on the actions  you want people to take.

6. Effective Self Promotion

If you create something and don’t tell anybody about it, it’s kind of useless. Self promotion gets  a bit of bad rap in the online world. When people hear that they go to the other extreme and don’t do any self promotion. A friend the other day told me we need to get over this idea that it’s bad to sell via social media. It’s a bit of a balancing act.

 If you wrote a book and think it would be of value to your followers, feel free to tweet it out once a week.

 Share a tip from the book, but include a link back to the book.

Do the same for your services or information products.

If you don’t promote your content you can’t expect anybody else to. If you don’t think it’s worth sharing why should anybody else?

So here’s the plan. If you’re hoping to blog a little more in 2023, but you can’t come up with any good ideas, try one of these four techniques to give your writing a jump-start.

1. Do Targeted Keyword Research

Keyword research should be part of your writing process, as finding the right terms might help you to do just a little better on a Google SERP. That’s something I’ve discussed in my blog posts multiple times.

But keywords can do more that give you SEO juice. Your searches can also help you to find out what people are looking for, and that could give you some excellent blog post ideas.

With Google AdWords‘ Keyword Planner, you can run a simple search on a topic you’re planning to cover. Your results page will give you keywords that are similar to the topic you’ve hit, but they come with just a few changes.

Check out my results for the term “blog post ideas,” and see how many other terms I could have mentioned, based on that result. “Make money blogging,” “Creating a blog,” and “Blog post ideas generator” are just a few of the gems that pop out at me. But there are many more.

How could this help? Consider doing research like this on blog posts you’ve already tested and loved. Type in the keyword you targeted there, or pop the whole headline in the search field. The results might give you a fresh angle on an old topic you have tried and loved. In 10 minutes, you could be writing.

Consider this: The DMR blog suggests there were 67 million Yelp reviews available as of October of 2014. Clearly, not all of these reviews were negative. Some must contain questions or compliments. You might have some lurking on your own page.

Read through your reviews and look for items that get a lot of mentions. If I owned this brew pup in Oregon, for example, and I saw this review, I might consider writing a blog about my “beer-amisu”. Readers love it, and they feel compelled to explain it, so maybe I should do the same.

If you grab an idea from someone else, be sure to tweak it or amend it or somehow make it your own. Stealing outright could get you in hot water, both with your competitors and with Google. But borrowing a good idea could help you to come up with the story idea that’s been eluding you.

7 Musts For A Successful Youtube Channel

YouTube is the second largest search engine on the web, right behind Google. And by now, you probably know that Google owns YouTube.

So, as social media managers and SEO professionals, YouTube is a platform we cannot afford to ignore.

An optimized channel is the foundation of successful content.

Some of these optimizations are no-brainers. Others tend to get overlooked.

What follows are seven musts for a successful YouTube Channel.

1. Channel Banner

Once people get to your YouTube Channel, the first thing they see is your channel banner.

A channel banner is a piece of creative that runs across the top of your channel.

The desired specs for a YouTube channel banner is 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, but keep in mind the “safe area” is 1,546 x 423 pixels – so all content should be kept within that middle section.

Ideally, your channel banner will tell people what kind of videos they can expect and when they can expect them.

Or, if YouTube is not your primary social platform, you may want to put your other social media handles on your channel banner instead.

However, you don’t want so much information on the channel banner that people don’t read it all, so keep it simple!

2. Introduction Video

Upon entering a channel, a set introduction video will start auto-playing under the channel banner, and it is the largest video on the screen.

Better yet, the first portion of the description of the video you set will also be shown on your channel home page.

This is a great place to tell people a little more about yourself and your channel.

3. Optimized Playlists

Now, the other things shown on your home page are playlists.

Playlists are defined groups of video that are selected, and named, by the channel owner. They are a great way to group your content and answer all of the questions around a specific topic or keyword.

Think of playlists and their titles/descriptions as pillar content.

You want to title your playlist the broad keyword you’d like to rank for, then add a description that includes long-tail or secondary keywords.

All of the videos you add to this playlist should be related to the larger topic you want your videos to rank for.

To date, this playlist features 20 videos, all of which answer a specific question around connected communications.

Some of the videos have thousands of views, while others have just a hundred or so.

But, when looking at the SERP, you’ll see that these videos have really paid off.

4. Defined Channel Keywords

YouTube is like Google. It relies on user-generated signals to determine who to show videos to and when to show them videos.

One of the ways you can help YouTube understand your content and who it should be served to is by defining your channel keywords.

This is a step that gets skipped rather often because it’s not the easiest setting to find.

How to Set YouTube Channel Keywords

Go to YouTube Studio.

Select Settings.

From the menu, toggle to Channel.

Set your keywords.

You don’t need to add a million keywords here but instead, focus on 5 to 10 important keywords that describe your channel.

Backlinko did a study that found you don’t want to use more than 50 characters in this section.

5. Custom URL

The magic number is 100.

At 100 subscribers you are able to get the coveted custom URL.

The custom URL is useful for one major reason – it makes it much easier to link to your YouTube channel.

Setting your custom URL only becomes available once you hit 100 subscribers, have a 30-day old channel, and have set a profile and channel banner photo.

6. Channel Description

Your channel description is one of the other signals YouTube relies on to determine what your content is about and who it should be served to.

However, it’s also used to tell your audience what they can expect from your channel both in content and results.

This space should be used to list the topics you will be covering, using keywords that your audience may use to search for your content.

When writing your channel description, it’s most important to take into consideration the first 100-150 characters of your description.

These characters are often what you will have to rely on to catch the audience’s attention in the search results.

7. ‘Connect with Me’ Template

The last thing to consider is creating a “connect with me” template to include in all of your video descriptions.

Now, this template isn’t always used to actually encourage people to actually connect with you, instead, it should be used to get people to interact with you.

These interactions could include things like:

What video to watch next.

What content to read on your website.

Links to the tools you use.

Online courses you may offer.

Links to your social channels.

A link for people to subscribe to your channel.

A brief description of who you are and what you offer.

You can create a template for this portion of your video description that you can use on every video created.

6 Strange Signs Of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic phenomenon known for its widespread cognitive symptoms, lower abdominal pain, and overall hypersensitivity. The American Academy of Rheumatology defines the condition as a neurological disorder characterized by pain and tenderness that can give rise to symptoms of fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. It affects around 2% of the world’s population and is prevalent in women aged 20-55.

The exact etiology of the condition is unknown. But the chronic nature of the problem, accompanied by limited treatment options, results in psychiatric comorbidities and lower cognitive deficits in concentration difficulties, forgetfulness, decreased vocabulary, poor verbal fluency, and mental slowness.

Here are some distinctive signs of fibromyalgia that affects people of different ages, genders, and ethnicities.

What are the 6 Strange Signs of Fibromyalgia? Paresthesia

Paresthesia is a burning or pricking sensation in the individual’s hands, legs, arms, and feet but can occur in other body parts. It is said to happen because of an altered nerve or nerve pathway function; the problem’s route lies in the sensory pathway of the body.

Paresthesia in fibromyalgia patients is often accompanied by pain conditions and is a common phenomenon. In a retrospective review of 161 patients with fibromyalgia, 84% of the subjects complained of paresthesia or numbness/tingling during the initial evaluation period. The majority of the subjects had bilateral upper and lower extremity paresthesias.

Of the total number of patients, Thirty-six subjects with paresthesias had electromyograms performed before the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, while 32 had usual symptoms. At a second assessment performed at a mean of 25 months from the diagnosis, 56 of these 57 patients reported current paresthesias. The study concluded that paresthesias are common in fibromyalgia and may mimic a neurologic disorder but without nerve damage.

Paresthesias aren’t required to be treated unless they are painful and disruptive. When they become painful, both over-the-counter and prescription painkillers, either oral/topical, provide symptomatic relief to the patient.


Pain due to a stimulus that usually does not provoke pain is allodynia. Allodynia in fibromyalgia conditions can be either tactile when caused by touch, in the form of physical touch or clothing pressing against your body, mechanical allodynia when the pain is caused by movement across the skin like bedsheets or air by the fan, or thermal allodynia when caused by temperature changes of a mild-moderate form.

Studies have shown that the neurochemical imbalances in the central nervous system lead to a central amplification of pain perception characterized by allodynia symptoms in fibromyalgia patients. It is often confused with hyperalgesia, an increased response to painful stimuli though the two are different phenomena.

The phenomenon is said to arise from sensitization of the nociceptors or free nerve endings located throughout the body, including skin, bones, muscles, and joints. Treatment options for allodynia in fibromyalgia conditions include tricyclic antidepressants, seizure drugs like Pregabalin and Neurontin, and topical Lidocaine.

Hyperacusis and Hyperosmia

Hyperacusis refers to a sensitivity to sound perception that can give rise to fear, annoyance, and aural facial pain symptoms. Though a rare phenomenon, it is associated with fibromyalgia conditions and is impacted by stimulus duration, frequency, and noise bandwidth.

Animal models have shown that the problem arises due to the amplification of neural signals from the damaged cochlea. In addition to auditory pathways involvement, non-auditory regions of the brain related to emotions, memory, and stress are involved in the phenomenon.

In addition to hyperacusis, hyperosmia, or sensitivity to smell, is another phenomenon observed in fibromyalgia patients. It arises due to an abnormally increased signal between the olfactory receptors and the olfactory cortex.

In short, the sensory sensitivity in fibromyalgia patients is much more than in people without fibromyalgia symptoms. In a study conducted to compare the sensory sensitivity of women with fibromyalgia and those with rheumatoid arthritis, those with fibromyalgia were more sensitive to sensory experiences in daily life than women with rheumatoid arthritis.

There are currently no drugs or treatment options for hyperacusis or hyperosmia conditions. Treating the underlying disease can provide the patient with symptomatic relief to a moderate extent.

Brain Fog

Brain fog (also known as fibro fog) is popularly referred to because of its association with fibromyalgia conditions. It is an umbrella term used to describe the brain problems associated with the situation. Loss of mental clarity, attention and memory impairment, problems in concentration, and difficulty in holding a conversation are all included in brain fog symptoms.

Patients with fibromyalgia often report forgetfulness and declines in cognitive function, memory, and mental alertness symptoms. These problems can impact your daily activities and affect your academic/social life.

The exact reason for fibrofog is unclear, but according to a hypothesis, it is because of the dysregulation of specific neurological pathways and neurotransmitters that play a role in an individual’s cognitive functioning.

In addition to decreased cognitive function, sleep loss, restless legs syndrome, and sleep apnea are other associated fibro fog problems left untreated, which can progress into depressive tendencies.

Usually, the fibro fog symptoms are experienced during fibromyalgia flare-ups, and the symptoms gradually fade away after the flare-ups reduce. Limiting caffeine intake, stress management, and exercise can help manage your symptoms during this time.


Dystonia is a complex neurological movement disorder characterized by repetitive muscle contractions. It is theorized to originate from noradrenaline receptors because of dopaminergic-noradrenergic imbalance induced by fibromyalgia conditions.

Dystonia is classified as primary dystonia when it is the sole characteristic symptom experienced by the individual or combined when it occurs in combination with other movement disorders.

It can affect all parts of your body when it is of a generalized nature or affect a particular area when it is of a focal nature. Curative therapies are as yet unavailable for the problem. Botulinum injections, deep brain stimulation, and managing the underlying problem can control the tremors.
