Suggested April 2024 Apple’s New Transparency Report Shows Decrease In Govt Device Requests And App Store Removals

Apple has published its latest Transparency Report covering government and private party requests for data from January 1 to June 30, 2023. This report reveals how many requests were made for user data around the world, and how many with which Apple could comply.

As first reported by TechCrunch’s Zack Whittaker, this latest Transparency Report shows a year-over-year decline in requests for data. In the first half of 2023, Apple received 28,276 device requests covering 171,368 devices. Apple was able to to comply with 80% of the requests.

For comparison’s sake, Apple received 31,778 device requests in the first half of 2023, covering 195,577 different devices. Apple was able to comply with 82% of those requests. The company explains what constitutes a government device request:

Examples of such requests are where law enforcement agencies are working on behalf of customers who have requested assistance regarding lost or stolen devices. Additionally, Apple regularly receives multi-device requests related to fraud investigations. Device-based requests generally seek details of customers associated with devices or device connections to Apple services.

One request may contain one or multiple device identifiers. For example, in a case related to the theft of a shipment of devices, law enforcement may seek information related to several device identifiers in a single request. We count the number of devices identified in each request, received from each country/region, and report the total number of devices specified in requests received by country/region.

Apple also says that worldwide government financial identifier requests were down year-over-year. Apple says that these requests generally cover situations where “law enforcement agencies are working on behalf of customers who have requested assistance regarding suspected fraudulent credit card activity used to purchase Apple products or services.”

Apple saw an increase in worldwide government account requests. In the first half of 2023, Apple received 9,872 account requests covering 31,200 accounts. It was able to comply with 85% of those requests. This is up from the 6,480 account requests Apple saw in the first half of 2023, though the number of accounts was down from 37,605.

Examples of such requests are where law enforcement agencies are working on cases where they suspect an account may have been used unlawfully or in violation of Apple’s terms of service. Account-based requests generally seek details of customers’ iTunes or iCloud accounts, such as a name and address; and in certain instances customers’ iCloud content, such as stored photos, email, iOS device backups, contacts or calendars.

The company says it saw an increase in account preservation requests in the first half of 2023 compared to the first half of 2023.

Under the US Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) government agencies may request Apple to preserve users’ account data by performing a one-time data pull of the requested existing user data available at the time of the request for 90 days (up to 180 days if Apple receives a renewal request). Examples of such requests are where law enforcement agencies suspect an account may have been used unlawfully or in violation of Apple’s terms of service, and request Apple to preserve the account data while they obtain legal process for the data.

As for the App Store, Apple says it received 56 legal violation takedown requests covering 239 applications. 46 of those requests came from mainland China, covering 152 applications. Apple also received 17 requests covering 39 apps for platform policy violations. 16 of these requests came from mainland China.

App Store takedown requests were down year-over-year, both in regards to legal violations and platform policy violations.

Finally, as Whittaker points out on Twitter, Apple has added a new line of copy to the Transparency Report saying that “in certain instances” it will provide data covering “customers’ iCloud content, such as stored photos, email, iOS device backups, contacts or calendars, in response to a valid emergency request.” This isn’t a new development, but rather something Apple is now clarifying in the Transparency Report.

Iphone 12, Apple’s New Strategy And Its Competitors

iPhone 12 has been officially launched and pre-orders are also being started.

Is the new iPhone 12 really new?. Logically it should be so that it could stand firmly in competition with other smartphones that are remarkably impressive.

What exactly is the iPhone 12?

Apple is probably giving its competitors a pretty tough time by not just launching a single phone but a whole lineup of bravo smartphones each targeting a different customer type which is apple’s new strategy for the new iPhone 12. This strategy is no doubt a pretty smart move by Apple to attract all kinds of users.

The 4 phones that were announced are

iPhone 12

iPhone 12 pro

iPhone 12 pro max

iPhone 12 mini

All of these phones share almost the same features as

A14 BIONIC chip 5nm transistor

5G

Ceramic shield glass

Magsafe

Stainless steel design

Though Apple didn’t include any sort of rebellious, revolutionary, or ground shaking smartphone feature. The overall presentation and some small changes make it look quite attractive.

The ceramic shield glass is also a great part of interest. Apple claims that with this glass your phone has 4x better shatter resistance and drop protection. This ceramic glass will also provide protection from scratches.

Compare Your iPhone Below:

The new chip is kind of something to really brag about in the new iPhone 12. Apple claims that this chip will make your phone perform 50 percent faster than any other phone and will reduce battery drainage.

The MagSafe feature is not an attractive attribute to buy this new handsomely expensive phone. But the iPhone users who used the MagSafe previously had in a MacBook are finding this feature much satisfying and obsessive. It is just some magnet back of the phone to attach accessories, wireless chargers and etc.

Will it sell?

A question like is the new iPhone worth buying? Or why should I buy a new iPhone 12? Will unceasingly be asked by people

Well, iPhone 12 is a decent phone, which of course some great merits and little demerits as well. Like no 120hz refresh display or removal of all the accessories like charger and earphones from the box of the phone for some lame reason no one is believing in. It should be bought according to the need.

About the selling, the strategy Apple used to sell this phone to every kind of customer is remarkable which they have done previously as well but not with this idea.

The iPhone 12 mini will definitely sell pretty well because the demand for a small compact smartphone with all the latest features up-to-date with the price is 699$ is truly significant. Other variants such as iPhone 12 pro and Pro max are for camera people.

The Pro version has a brilliant camera system and the pro max version pushes the boundaries even farther. Pro max seems a premium smartphone with maximum price and performance.

Competition is iPhone 12

The selling rate also depends on its competitor’s smartphone. Everyone wants a smartphone with infinite potential and minimum price.

If there is a phone at the level of iPhone 12 with less price everyone will immediately go for that.

Except for the iPhone enthusiasts and the people who are so lazy to leave the ecosystem of Apple products and are stuck there.

After comparing the price, specification, and popularity, the following are the smartphone models Apple must worry about.

Note 20 ultra (Samsung)

8T (OnePlus)

Xperia 5 II (Sony)

These are certainly a problem for iPhone selling. Some are already selling pretty well. Companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Motorola are excluded due to some reasons.

Samsung is also not a strong competition because of the backlash of the previous double standard hardware problem, which made Samsung lose many customers and reputation as a company.

But OnePlus has a significant potential to compete and beat Apple. The hardware, technology, and user experience are immensely attractive to smartphone enthusiasts.

Apple’s New Ipad: 5 Questions

Apple dished out all the details on its third-generation iPad during the device’s unveiling but the next iPad also raised a number of interesting questions that have yet to be answered. We know that Apple’s latest iPad features a brand new Retina Display with 2048-by-1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch. The device is powered by a dual-core A5X chip, a 5-megapixel iSight camera with 1080p video capture, a FaceTime camera for video chat, optional LTE wireless broadband, and speech-to-text dictation.

Bye, bye Google Maps?

It looks like Apple may be trying to slowly wean itself off Google services by using its own mapping products in at least part of the new iPhoto for iOS. Critics started noticing that maps in iPhoto features such as Places (photo geotagging), the Photo Journals feature, and slideshows did not have the usual look and feel of Google Maps.

Whether Apple is using Google Maps at all in iPhoto is still under debate. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber says sources are telling him that Google Maps are still in use for Places, but other parts of iOS use Apple’s own mapping solution.

Apple in 2009 bought mapping company Placebase and in 2011 bought C3 Technologies, a 3D mapping company. Apple has reportedly had a strained relationship with Google since the search giant rolled out its Android smartphone platform. Talk has been circulating for some time about Apple replacing Google services with its own versions or a rival’s.

Reading into numbers

Before Apple launched its new device, critics and Apple watchers were debating whether the next iPad would be dubbed iPad 3 or iPad HD. It turns out neither guess was correct and Apple is opting to simply call its tablet “iPad” from here on out. Apple does something similar for its MacBook and iMac lineup, and perhaps that similarity is significant. The iPad is already being used by some people as a laptop replacement and this newest iPad may have the speed and improved graphics that convinces the average non-geeky user to jettison a laptop for Apple’s tablet.

More RAM?

Apple’s new iPad may have 1GB RAM, double the amount of the iPad 2, according to sources who spoke with The Verge. Given that the iPad has improved graphics, a better camera, and other improved features, it would not be a surprise if The Verge’s claims turn out to be accurate. Apple has also doubled the RAM in each successive iPad so far, starting with 256MB RAM in the original iPad.

Beginning of the end for the original iPad? Chip debate

The new iPad has a brand new dual-core chip called the A5X able to produce what Apple describes as “quad-core graphics.” But analysts are wondering what the A5X means for the next iPhone. There is some talk that the next iPhone will not get the A5X, but will instead sport a new quad-core chip. Since the first iPad came out with the A4 chip, Apple has introduced a new processor with the iPad and then rolled out the same chip in the iPhone. But that may not happen this time around. “I think that this new chip is probably just for the iPad,” Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst for the Lynley Group told IDG News. We should find out what the next iPhone has in store for users later in 2012.

What Is Indian Govt.’s New Guiding Manual To Artificial Intelligence And Its Ethics?

Are you consciously or unconsciously aware of the fact that Artificial Intelligence is omnipresent? It is finely weaved in our day to day routine from phones to computer and tablets, every device embraces the technology in our surrounding. Even the rising trending craze for Netflix is also a gift of Artificial Intelligence, for sure. Therefore, it would not be an element surprise if we monitor the involvement of the Indian government in this sector. The Government of India is set to regulate Artificial Intelligence with a transparent set of guidelines for the procedure to develop and implement the AI technology, as confirmed by Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu. As the industry work ethics are becoming more and more reliant on the use of machines, machine learning, smart algorithms to empower AI systems, which makes it sagacious for regulation. The government, additionally, expects to handle ethical issues with some of the regulations framed. Such ethical issues include fear regarding: •  How AI comes to making a certain decision based on the data that is available to it at that point of time •  How to ensure that it makes the correct decision every time •  Who owns the data about the users, and how that data is used to further power AI based apps, services, and platforms However, a larger portion of data that is gathered by AI and further used for improvisation is controlled by certain enterprises. The Indian government wants to install policies and guidelines along with a well-versed mechanism to write algorithms and how data is gathered in the whole process is utilized, safeguarded and perhaps tracked. Following Canada, Singapore, France, China, and the UK, India will be framing and subsequently enforcing policies and regulations that supervise the usage of AI.

Region-wise Instances Australia

In the 2023-19 budget, the government of Australia declared a four-year plan and booked AU$29.9 million to assist AI developments in the country. Simultaneously, to support the ethical and responsible development of AI, the government will design a Technology Roadmap, a Standard Framework, and a national AI Ethics Framework.

What’s New In Microsoft’s Your Phone App

What’s new in Microsoft’s Your Phone App

Microsoft is introducing new features in your phone app that lets Windows users launch the most recently used apps on their Android phones.

This new Your Phone feature relies on the existing remote Apps capability that allows owners of select Samsung Galaxy phones to access their mobile apps on their Windows PCs.

The new feature is said to be a step towards Apple’s handoff feature that lets users use one app and continue where they left on another device.

Microsoft is rolling out a new feature in its Your Phone app that lets Windows 11 users launch their most recently used applications on their Android devices.

The company is testing the new functionality, which doesn’t require any additional effort on the part of the user to set up, with Windows Insiders and it leverages the existing Apps capability already built into several select smartphones.

Your Phone allows users to mirror their Android phones directly to their PCs to respond to texts, notifications, and photos from their mobile devices. The app already lets users mirror multiple apps to a PC while they work on other tasks.

How it works

In Windows 11, the mouse cursor can be placed over the Your Phone icon in the notifications area of the taskbar to access the recent Apps feature.

With the new Recent Apps feature, your recently used Android apps will appear on the Your Apps page of the Your Phone app.

This change makes it easy to quickly access an app, making it possible for you to switch from your desktop to your mobile device

Microsoft plans to roll out this new Continuity feature to everyone over time and expects that everyone will have access within weeks.

Devices used

The new feature is currently only supported by select Samsung Galaxy devices that support the exclusive link to the Windows feature that can be accessed from the quick panel menu.

Link to Windows was developed by Microsoft and Samsung, and it allows users to sync their phone with their Windows 11 PC without using a USB cable.

If you don’t want to open an app, you can also just drag and drop files between your phone and PC by simply tapping and holding on to a file you want to transfer.

Apple’s handoff feature

Microsoft’s implementation is more sophisticated than Apple’s Handoff feature. It works with any app on all three platforms.  Microsoft’s solution will open the native app that supports Handoff when it transitions from an iOS device to a Mac or vice versa.

This isn’t quite as handy as Apple’s solution since it doesn’t work with native iOS apps. You can only access apps on your Mac or Windows computer or through Chrome browsers on a Mac and Windows PC.

One nice thing about this new Continuity feature is that it works across multiple devices. If you pick up where you left off on one device, you can continue using that app on another device.

The big caveat here is that this new recent app feature only works with specific phones right now. Microsoft says support for more Android phones running will be added soon.

The Your Phone app will require an active internet connection and Bluetooth connection between your phone and PC to make this work.

The experience isn’t as seamless as Apple’s handoff feature where you could easily switch from one device to another without launching individual apps.

Building A Linux App Store: Can You Help?

Linux on the desktop has seen some significant successes over the years, from improvements with hardware detection to user adoption. Yet despite these successes, the single sticking point I find myself arguing with people over the most is the idea that existing methods of software installation are ideal.

Installing software with most distributions is pretty brain-dead simple. With command line options and a variety of GUI solutions to make the process even easier, I genuinely don’t think there’s a problem with the ease of software installation.

There is however, the issue of software discovery.

Dude, where’s my software?

For moderately experienced Linux enthusiasts, most software is a stone’s throw away. But even the more experienced desktop Linux users have been known to discover a new application from the most inconvenient sources.

Often these discoveries take place long after the user has given up locating such an application when they needed it most. Where this becomes truly problematic is when the application was available from the software repositories used with the user’s own distro all along. Yet the app went totally unheard of because the user didn’t know which category it was featured in!

This is hardly an isolated incident, mind you. I can count at least seven individuals who I know personally who have been in this situation. Is it office, business or communication related? Also, how is the performance rated? So many questions – often going unanswered.

Well, at one time there was a solution to this problem on the Linux platform. Most people within the Linux community scorned the solution at the time, due to strong opinions of the Linux distro this utility was bundled with. Regardless, the utility itself has yet to be matched.

Enter Linspire’s CNR software installation utility

Sadly thanks to the evolution of the company that created the utility, CNR of today is not nearly as compelling as it once was. Now it’s merely another application that must first be installed, then used to install software. It uses basically the same methods employed already by a number of popular Debian-based distros.

Perhaps the final nail in CNR’s evolutionary coffin is the missing software aisles that were big with the original CNR utility built into the Linspire 5.0 release. At that time, not only could a user keep track of which software is in their preferred list, they were free to share this list with others.

Sadly since the move over to the new CNR utility, I have yet to see evidence of this function.

Clearly there was something quite user friendly here. Seems to me that the idea was right at one time, now it simply needs to evolve with the times.

From CNR to a Web based App Store

A headache I used find myself frustrated with was a lack of applications designed to fit certain needs with specific levels of functionality.

Sure, more often than not there was something GTK- or QT-based out there that would give me the basics of what I was looking for. However in rare instances, I found myself needing software with a more razor-focus to handle specific tasks.

Then Adobe AIR came out for Linux. Almost immediately I found myself running a multitude of applications on my PC that were unavailable previously. It took some searching, but there are some fantastic AIR apps out there that are worth a look.

For various web site endeavors, I found myself using an app known as Market Samurai. I also run specific apps for Twitter and Facebook.

Productivity apps I fell in love with include “Klok” and Present.ly’s own AIR application. In each instance, the natively available Linux software did not hold a candle to what was offered for Adobe AIR. Not even close! Adobe AIR really opened new doors for me.

Next Page: Why not have some kind of Linux friendly App Store?
