Archos 28 and 32 PMPs Available Now

Archos is on a roll today. After officially announcing, and making available for purchase the Archos 70 Internet tablet, the company has also released a pair of Personal Media Players. Smaller form factors, but with the Android Operating System (OS) tucked away inside, making the devices more than just your average MP3 or MP4 player. You’ll get to connect to friends, and play games, all on a small “tablet” device.

The press release, which you can read below, is actually pretty devoid of any actual real information regarding the devices themselves. However, their product page, which is where you’ll want to go if you want to purchase one of these little guys for yourself, tells us that the Archos 28 features a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen display, while the Archos 32 has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen. The site also says that both of the PMPs will have Android 2.2 under the hood, ready to go.

Space wise, the Archos 28 will have either a 4GB or 8GB option, while the Archos 32 will have 8GB of memory. Both PMPs feature integrated WiFi, making sure that you’re able to connect to the Internet while you’re out and about, as long as you can find a hotspot. You’ll be able to play “3D games,” as well as make full use of applications. There’s also a video camera on the Archos 32, but not the 28. The Archos 28 will set you back $99.99, for the 4GB model, while the 32 costs $149.99

Sony Bravia 3D Hdtvs Now Available For Pre

Sony BRAVIA 3D HDTVs Now Available for Pre-Order

The push for 3D may have started in the movie theaters, but it’s definitely a sensation that’s invading our living rooms. Whether you’re a fan or not probably doesn’t matter anymore (outside of your own living room, of course), because it doesn’t look like companies are slowing down any time soon. Sony, in fact, has just announced that they’ve got the largest array of 3D-capable devices on the market, which is bolstered by the fact that you can now pre-order your favorite BRAVIA 3D HDTV from their online store.

The 3D HDTVs all feature the same things: incorporation of a frame sequential display, that work in conjunction with the active-shutter glasses and Sony’s proprietary high frame rate technology. All this, in the hopes that their TVs offer the smoothest, full high-definition 3D image. One of the most noteworthy of the 3D sets is the BRAVIA XBR-LX900 HDTV, which has a built-in 3D sync transmitter, and Sony is being nice enough to throw in two pair of active-shutter glasses.

“3D is revolutionizing the entertainment industry and only Sony is involved in every stage of the ecosystem,” said Chris Fawcett, vice president of Sony’s television business. “Leveraging deep 3D expertise from the company’s theatrical and professional groups, Sony products are optimized to offer the best possible 3D home entertainment experience.”

The full line of HDTVs come in sizes ranging from 40-inches to 60-inches, and you can expect to drop anywhere between $2,100 and $5,000 for the HDTV of your 3D dreams. Although, Sony’s all about the free gifts, so consumers who purchase and register one of the new 3D BRAVIA models will receive a copy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray 3D™ title Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs as well as Blu-ray 3D title Deep Sea. Maybe not your favorite movies, but hey, they’re free.

Press Release:

SAN DIEGO, June 9, 2010 – Sony today announced that its 3D capable BRAVIA® HDTVs are now available for pre-sale at Sony Style stores and that its new integrated Blu-ray 3D™ devices will hit retail shelves beginning this July. Additionally, the company released a free firmware update that activates Blu-ray 3D capability for previously announced Blu-ray Disc models including the BDP-S470 and BDP-S570 players and the BDV-E570 and BDV-E770W home theater systems.

Sony now offers consumers the most diverse line of 3D capable home entertainment products including 19 BRAVIA® HDTVs, Blu-ray Disc players and theater systems, and audio/video components that offer various levels of performance and features.

Sony will support the 3D launch with an integrated marketing campaign featuring NFL quarterback Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts, and Grammy® and Emmy® award-winning Jive/Sony Music artist Justin Timberlake aiming to deliver consumer education and eliminate 3D confusion.

Focusing on that high quality experience, Sony’s 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs incorporate a frame sequential display with active-shutter glasses that work together with Sony’s proprietary high frame rate technology reproducing smooth, full high-definition 3D images.

The line-up includes the 3D integrated BRAVIA XBR-LX900 HDTV, which features a built-in 3D sync transmitter and two pair of active shutter glasses and the 3D ready BRAVIA XBR-HX909 and KDL-HX800 series 3D ready models which offer the option of adding the 3D sync transmitter and glasses at an additional cost.

The line features screen sizes including 40, 46, 52, 55, and 60-inches and ranges in price from around $2,100 (KDL-40HX800) to about $5,000 (XBR-60LX900).

BRAVIA XBR-LX900 Series Integrated 3D HDTVs

The full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) BRAVIA XBR-LX900 series features integrated 3D functionality and includes the 60-inch XBR-60LX900 for about $5,000 and the 52-inch XBR-52LX900 for about $4,000.

The Monolithic Design, Edge LED backlight models also feature integrated Wi-Fi® (802.11n) for an easy connection to broadband home networks to access Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video Platform and BRAVIA Internet Widgets, as well as Sony’s new premium video service, Qriocity.

BRAVIA XBR-HX909 Series 3D Ready HDTVs

The XBR-HX909 series is 3D ready with the addition of Sony active shutter glasses (about $150 per pair) and sync transmitter (about $50), both sold separately. The models feature full HD (1920 x 1080p) and Sony’s Intelligent Dynamic full array LED backlight. The Monolithic Design concept models include the 52-inch XBR-52HX909 for about $4,000 and the 46-inch XBR-46HX909 for about $3,500.

Sony’s Intelligent Dynamic LED backlighting improves contrast and dynamic range by local dimming that controls the LED backlight level by area so that detail is maintained in the dark areas, while other areas are driven near peak brightness. The models also include an RS-232c I/0 terminal for custom installation applications.

BRAVIA KDL-HX800 Series 3D Ready HDTVs

Also 3D ready (with the addition of Sony active shutter glasses and sync transmitter, sold separately), the BRAVIA KDL-HX800 series features full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) and utilizes a Dynamic edge LED backlight with local dimming for improved contrast and dynamic range. The series includes the 55-inch class (54.6-inches measured diagonally) KDL-55HX800 for about $3,400, the 46-inch KDL-46HX800 for about $2,700, and the 40-inch KDL-40HX800 for about $2,100.

Blu-ray 3D Players

Available in July for about $300, Sony’s Blu-ray 3D BDP-S770 model offers built in Wi-Fi (802.11n) for easy access to Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video platform and Qriocity.

Additionally, Sony’s BDP-S470 and BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc players can be upgraded to play Blu-ray 3D with a free online firmware update that is now available. The update also adds Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA®) compatibility to the models.

Blu-ray 3D Home Theater Systems

Also available this July for about $800, Sony’s new full HD 1080p 5.1 channel Blu-ray 3D capable home theater system (model BDV-HZ970W) features wireless capabilities via the included USB wireless LAN adapter (802.11n) allowing for easy access to the BRAVIA Internet Video platform and Qriocity.

The model also offers two HDMI inputs with 3D pass-through, HDMI repeater function, and a universal remote.

Sony’s BDV-E570 and BDV-E770W Blu-ray theater systems can now also be upgraded to Blu-ray 3D with the free firmware update. The update also adds DLNA compatibility to the units.

Unique to all Sony Blu-ray Disc players, users with an iPhone® or iPod® touch device can control the players using a free app called “BD Remote” which can be downloaded from the Apple App store. The app, will also be available soon for Android™ devices, allows the device to function as a remote control that includes the ability to access a Blu-ray Disc’s details such as jacket artwork, actor, and production information as well as search for additional video clips online.

3D Capable Home Audio Components

Sony also recently announced 3D capable home audio products including the STR-DN1010 audio/video receiver, the HT-CT350 and HT-CT150 3.1 channel sound bars, and the HT-SF470 5.1 channel home theater system. The models offer consumers flexible solutions to round out the Sony 3D experience and meet the demands of 3D home entertainment.

Additionally, Sony will add 3D capability to the previously announced STR-DH810 and STR-DH710 AV receivers through a firmware update later this month.

The Best Vr Apps And Games Available On The App Store Right Now

To help you get on top the bulk of apps available and break the tedious ‘download, try and delete’ chain, we have been weeding through the vast app-scape and given VR-ready apps a hard look. If you want to put your new toys to good use, here is a list of some of the best VR games and apps we believe you will want to embark on first.

The best VR games

Commencing with the arguably tougher rubric, VR compatible games are by no means in short supply on the App Store, however you would still be hard pressed to name genuinely good ones on mobile. In spite of the slew of racing and maze games, none of them I would recommend with any degree of confidence.

To date, the downfall of most of these apps are limited playability due to erratic controls or in-app purchases that restrict your experience so much so that you might as well not bother. Having said that, after callously ridding my iPhone of all the letdowns, four apps I would broadly categorize as games are still standing. Here are the ones that made the cut:

VR Sniper

VR SNIPER is available for free on the App Store.

VR Noir Like the name suggests, you’re thrown into an artfully presented crime story set in today’s Sydney, Australia. The player gets involved snooping around multiple rooms and deciding where to take conversations whenever presented with two options to respond. It’s a blend compelling enough to keep your attention for the 10-15 minutes it will take you to complete.

The player gets involved snooping around multiple rooms and deciding where to take conversations whenever presented with two options to respond. It’s a blend compelling enough to keep your attention for the 10-15 minutes it will take you to complete.

The narrative is fairly short and over before you really care about any of the characters. Also, ‘to be continued’ endings never really fly with me.

VR Noir is available for free on the App Store.

Haunted Rooms: Escape VR Game As far as free VR games go, this one offers quite a bit of quality content and game time before completion. Walking and picking up objects (to escape rooms) is smooth and some of the in-game riddles require you to put your thinking cap on.
And, before I forget, there is the occasional scare.

Ad pop-ups can be disturbing, but then again the app is free and level progression does not need to be paid for, so perhaps I don’t have a leg to stand on criticising that. The app could also do with a manual – right now you’re thrown in the deep end and need to deduce controls.

Insidious VR

The best 360 experiences

VR footage that puts you into somebody else’s shoes (or parachute, or flippers) was among the first to crop up in the VR realm, and it is easy to see why. Unlike games, which often times grapple with the implementation of comprehensible controls, 360 degree movies allow you to kick back, look around and immerse yourself without having to worry about a thing. Consequently, there are some pretty strong titles on the App Store that promise immersion for hours.

Easily my favorite app to introduce anyone to the world of VR. Within consists of approximately 25 standalone videos which all beautifully parade virtual reality’s allure. Some of these videos are picks from upscale magazines, some are music videos and others again winning entries of film festivals or TV shows. The hands-down best feature of Within is the option to download the videos to your device first, so you don’t have to stream and can be assured your video will look sharp and play uninterruptedly.

Within is available for free on the App Store.

Discovery VR

Discovery VR is available for free on the App Store.

GoPro VR

GoPro’s mission statement is spectacle and extreme sports, and that is exactly what you get in abundance with this one. All videos are naturally captured and uploaded by the GoPro community, which produces some pretty stomach-turning videos. I personally recommend the aviation material, which works best for me.

Again, internet connection is required (a common theme unfortunately among most apps). What’s more is that due to its nature, some of these videos can be hand-held, shaky or just not up to par in the quality department.

GoPro VR is available for free on the App Store.

VR Thrills

VR Thrills is available for free on the App Store.

YouTube is available for free on the App Store.

Macos Mojave Now Available With Dark Mode, News And Home Apps, Much More

The next major version of the Mac operating system is now available: macOS Mojave. Version 10.14 introduces system wide Dark Mode, new apps like Apple News and Home, new ways to organize (and decorate) your desktop, and much more.

macOS Mojave is available as a free software update on the Mac App Store for these Macs according to Apple:

MacBook models introduced in early 2024 or later

MacBook Air models introduced in mid 2012 or later

MacBook Pro models introduced in mid 2012 or later

Mac mini models introduced in late 2012 or later

iMac Pro (all models)

Mac Pro models introduced in late 2013, plus mid 2010 or mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics processor, including MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560 and Sapphire Radeon PULSE RX 580

Developer and public beta testers can update from the pre-release version through the Mac App Store link above.

macOS Mojave

macOS Mojave introduces several new features that can improve how you work with files and access information. Version 10.14 also includes few changes that may break existing workflows — although you should always check app compatibility for software you rely on before upgrading.

macOS Mojave will be the last version to work with 32-bit apps, however, and Back to my Mac has been discontinued.

Dark Mode

Recent versions of macOS have had a feature that turned the Dock and menu bar dark, and macOS Mojave goes all the way with a real Dark Mode. This changes the appearance of built-in apps including Finder, Safari, Photos, and iTunes as well as updated third-party apps.

You can change between Light Mode and Dark Mode in System Preferences under General. There’s no built-in option to automate mode switching at launch. macOS Mojave also includes eight different appearance colors that let you change how your Mac looks.

Dynamic Desktop

macOS Mojave introduces a whole new wallpaper style called Dynamic Desktop. Version 10.14 includes two versions at launch: Mojave which is a desert scene, and Solar Gradients which is color-based.

Dynamic Desktop wallpapers change their appearance throughout the day based on your location. You’ll see a lighter wallpaper during the day and darker colors into the evening. When using Dark Mode, however, Dynamic Desktop will be limited to darker colors.

Four new apps debut on the Mac with macOS Mojave:

News for following publications and topics on Apple News

Stocks for following financial markets and related news

Home for managing and controlling HomeKit accessories

Voice Memos for recording audio and accessing clips recorded on iOS

Safari is updated with the ability to add favicons, or website icons, to tabs as a preference. Mail gains new mailbox sorting suggestions and an emoji picker button in the toolbar when composing new messages.

Apple’s voice assistant came to the Mac two versions ago with macOS Sierra, and today Siri on the Mac is gaining new features. Siri on the Mac finally works with HomeKit. You can also use Siri to look up saved password information.

macOS Mojave includes several new tools for working with files on your Mac.

Stacks lets you group related files on your desktop by type, date, tags, and more.

Finder gains a new Gallery View, Quick Actions for assigning common tasks to easy-to-access buttons, and Quick Look now lets you manipulate images and videos without opening Preview or QuickTime.

Screenshots have been overhauled to make it easier to edit images and capture screencasts. Hold Shift-Command-5 to access the new tools.

Continuity Camera lets you insert photos and videos captured on your iPhone or iPad in apps like Messages, Mail, and Pages on your Mac.

macOS Mojave will introduce Group FaceTime with up to 32 participants in a future update. Version 10.14 doesn’t yet include this feature, but we expect it to roll out around October in iOS 12.1 and macOS 10.14.1 or later.

Future updates to macOS Mojave will move from the Mac App Store update tab to the Software Update section of the System Preferences app. Check out 9to5Mac for more macOS Mojave coverage including hands-on with new features, app updates, and more.
