Google cloud migration offers several lucrative services that will increase operational efficiency in businesses

Google Cloud is gradually becoming a market leader in cloud services and closely follows Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Amazon Web Services.

You’ve reached the right place if you are thinking of migrating to Google Cloud but don’t know how to begin.

Step1: Assessing Your Current Environment, and The Workload that will be Migrated

Three types of environments can be considered.

On-premise: Your current environment’s hardware and software elements are hosted on-premise and managed by staff. This gives you full control over the environment but also allows you to take full responsibility for it.

Private Hosting: This is where the infrastructure is outsourced to another party. You don’t need to maintain the security of the infrastructure. You still have control over the software aspects of your environment, including hypervisors and virtual machines.

Cloud-native: This type is compatible with cloud environments such as Google Cloud. It makes it easier to migrate to the cloud while keeping your data more secure.

What is the importance of the workload for the business? What speed would you need to move the workload?

Is it difficult to transfer the workload based on the previous assessments?

To better understand the cost of Google Cloud deployment (including maintenance), you should also do a total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) calculation. This is particularly important for migrating from an existing environment to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or other cloud environments. Hidden costs are often overlooked when calculating costs in an old environment.

Step 2 – Planning The Steps of Migration

This phase focuses on identifying the resources required to achieve the goal of the Google Cloud migration. Prioritizing the steps is important.

It is usually better to start with the easiest aspects of the migration. This will allow you to get familiar with the Google Cloud Platform and give you the opportunity to test different aspects of the migration.

Google Cloud is a special case, so you will need to take into account the following aspects when planning.

User and service identities: Google has a guide for user and service identities on how to set up IAM (Identity and Access Management).

Resource allocation planning hierarchy: Google Cloud’s resource organization hierarchies can be arranged via projects, folders, organization nodes, and folders.

Defining roles, groups, and roles: Define roles and groups to allocate resources. This is where the emphasis lies on ensuring that users only have access to information and resources necessary to complete their tasks. This will ensure data security and efficiency.

How to design a network topology: Google has a guide that will help you to create your Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), which will ensure a reliable, secure, and fast network topology.

Step 3 – Deployment

However, it is important to validate and test all configurations and resources before migrating. After all, configurations have been tested and verified that they work as intended, you can only move assets.

Manual deployment: You have greater control over the process and can adjust the configurations to your needs. It’s however more complicated and prone to errors. Also, keeping an audit trail of the deployment process can prove difficult.

Step 4: Optimizing Google Cloud Environment

Optimizing is a phase that ensures you get the best performance possible according to your business goals while using fewer resources.

This should include training your employees to maximize the adoption of Google Cloud.

About Data Migration Tools

A good data migration tool allows you to transfer data from one PC to another with ease.

Some common reasons to do a data migration are:

Security reasons

Backup purposes

Upgrading operating system

Whether you are a business owner or an individual user, data migration can seem daunting for a beginner. The idea is to move all your files and folders from one place to another. This might seem scary at first. In addition, you might have applications with important or sensitive data. What if all that is lost?

To succeed in data migration, you need to choose the right kind of tools for your needs.

There is a lot of data migration software for specific purposes that work differently. For example, a data migration tool can:

Remove the need to reinstall apps

Shrink your hard drive to the SSD drive

Clone and transfer the whole operating system from one place to another

What features you need depends on the use case. The best way to find out is by checking what the products offer to find one that suits you the best.

Here is a list of the best data migration tools with reviews to help with decision-making.

Here is a list of questions about data migration and the tools introduced above. You will also see a guide on how to use a data migration tool.

What Is Data Migration?

Data migration means moving data from one place to another. Data migration can refer to any of the following:

Moving data from one location to another

Converting data from one format to another

Moving data from an application to another

Usually, data migration is needed when there is a system upgrade or a maintenance period. These days data migration is common when a business moves to a cloud-based storage system. When doing this, the on-premise data and applications need to be migrated to the cloud.

Different Types of Data Migration

There are three main types of data migration:

Storage migration. This means transferring data from one storage to another, usually a more modern storage facility.

Cloud migration. This means moving data from on-premise infrastructure into the cloud.

Application migration. This is the process of moving an application from one place to another. For example, this could mean deploying the application from one cloud service to another. It can also mean moving an application to the cloud from an on-premise setup.

What Is HDD?

HDD stands for a hard disk drive. It is a non-volatile device for data storage.

Non-volatile data storage is storage that maintains the data even when the device is turned off. Each and every computer needs a non-volatile storage space to work properly. HDD is one example of such storage. Without such storage, a computer would lose all of its data when turned off. This would make computers quite impractical.

Your typical computer, mobile device, or other types of consumer electronics include an HDD. An HDD can store an operating system, a software program, or other files. The HDD is comprised of magnetic disks.

To be more specific, an HDD controls the reading and writing of the disk that supplies the data storage. The HDD is typically a primary or secondary storage device in your computer.

What Is SSD?

SSD stands for a solid-state drive. An SSD is the new generation storage device found in modern-day computers.

Unlike traditional hard disks, the SSD uses a flash-based memory. An SSD is a collection of electronic circuits that live in silicon semiconductor cells. This is why they are sometimes called semiconductor storage devices.

But the solid-state device is a more commonly used term. It describes the system better because there are no moving parts unlike in HDDs.

When you want to speed up an old computer, upgrading to SSD is one of the best tricks in the book.

What Does HDD to SSD Conversion Mean?

Converting HDD to SSD is a way to speed up your computer.

This means replacing the mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) with a more efficient solid-state drive (SSD).

What Is an Image (in Disk Management)?

In this article, you learned about migrating data as images. For example, with EaseUS you can convert your data into an image and transfer it from point A to point B.

But converting a file or app into an image might sound funny to you.

A disk image is a big file. The disk image reproduces the contents and functionality of a hard disk, optical disk, or any other type of storage device. A disk image file extension is typically .iso, .cue, .bin, .img, or .dmg.

What Is Disk Partition?

The disk partition splits a disk into one or more regions. These regions are called disk partitions.

When a partition is done, a partition table is created. It can be found in the first region of the disk. The partition table stores info about the disk size and the location of the partitions.

The disk partitioning is a process that allows for creating smaller logical drives. These are called volumes.

In the eyes of your operating system, these volumes are completely independent units. In other words, you can perform an operation in one unit without affecting the others.

But why partition a disk?

Most computer users will never need to partition a disk. But it can be useful in some specific situations, such as:

A new hard drive has to be partitioned to save data. Otherwise, it is unusable.

A partition can offer a way to organize data based on the data type. For example, one partition stores documents while the other does all your music.

To reinstall Windows, you can partition data into the system partition. This way the reinstallation doesn’t mess with your existing programs and data.

To backup a specific data area, you can backup the specific partition instead of the entire drive.

Partitions streamline the data recovery process and make it more convenient.

What Is NTFS?

NTFS stands for NT file system, sometimes called New Technology File System. It is a Windows NT-specific process that allows storing, organizing, and finding files on a hard disk.

What Is FAT?

FAT stands for File Allocation Table. It is a file system for hard drives.

The FAT system manages files on hard drives and other systems. For example, flash memory, digital cameras, and other portable devices use FAT. The FAT stores information about the files. It also extends the lifetime of a hard drive.

To find a file on a hard drive, a process called seeking takes place. This wears and tears the physical hard drive over time. The FAT system reduces the wear and tear caused by seeking. This is because the FAT allows for easier and more optimized access to the files.

How Long Does a Data Migration Take?

For a typical user, data migration takes place in minutes or hours.

However, there is no general answer as there are too many things that affect the migration speed. These include:

The amount of data

Is the data compressed or not

The type of source device

The type of target device

On some occasions, migration can take days or even weeks.

What to Look for in the Data Migration Software?

To pick the right data migration tool for your use, you need to be careful. Some tools perform tasks better than others.

More importantly, there is a whole bunch of well-rounded tools that can do all sorts of data tricks. But to not pay for anything extra, you should consider your use case. Likewise, if you pay for software that is incapable of your needs, you’re going to be frustrated.

Before doing data migration, backups, or any other data management-related tasks, keep these in mind.

1. Functionality

Generally, you should pick a data migration tool with many features and versatile functionality. Even though some of the features might seem like unnecessary or extra, they might help in case something funky happens.

When you are in a search of a data migration tool, pay attention to at least these features:

Data backup and recovery

Orchestration and scheduling

Data profiling and ETL

Anti-malware functionality

Debugging and error fixing

Keep in mind some tools are rather expensive. There are free trials that you should definitely exhaust before paying a dime.

2. Security

No matter what kind of data you deal with, there is always a chance for a cyber-attack.

3. User Friendliness

Data migration can be a daunting task. It takes a while and there are lots of things to focus on. You should use a data migration tool that makes the data migration process as lightweight as possible.

If all your teammates or employees are supposed to know how to use the tool, you want to make it as easy as possible. No matter how familiar or unfamiliar someone is with the process, it shouldn’t cause them extra stress.

5. Support

Last but not least, your data migration tool should have customer support just in case.

The quality data migration and management tools come with great customer support that helps you any time of the week.

Sometimes, you may encounter delays or unexpected behavior. In such a case, you get a night of better sleep once you have contacted the support behind the tool.

How to Use a Typical Data Migration Software?

Using a data migration should not be a problem. The download/install/setup phase depends on the software you are using.

Here is your typical steps to start using a data migration tool. Notice that these are just general guidelines. To find tool-specific instructions, visit the tool’s knowledge base on the website.

Step 1: Select a tool and a plan

Before starting a data migration, you need to have the right type of tool at your disposal. Your typical data migration tool has a free trial version, but you should subscribe to a paid plan for more rigorous use.

You can read reviews of the best data migration tools above. You can also familiarize yourself with the pricing and use cases to find the best match for you.

After choosing a tool and a plan, it is time to move on to the next step.

Step 2: Download and install

Now that you have chosen a tool, it is time to download the software to your device.

This process can take a while.

When the download has been completed, you should run through the setup wizard to install it on your system.

Step 3: Enter the details

To actually be able to start using the tool, you need to confirm you are a verified customer that should have an access to use the tool.

To do this, you need to create an account. This typically involves providing the tool with your information as well as your new account information. You must also enter a key to unlock the free/paid plan depending on the tool.

Step 4: Confirm the account

Once you have entered your details and created a new account, you need to verify the account. Usually, you receive an email in a short amount of time.

Make sure to check the spam folder, as sometimes these types of messages end up there automatically!

Step 5: Start data migration

At this point, you should be good to start using the tool.

The tool usually presents a view that allows you to choose what kind of data task you want to do.

For example, if you want to migrate data from one disk to another, you should have an option such as “Automatic Cloning”. To migrate a disk, choose the cloning option from the startup menu of the tool.

Step 6: Choose the source and target disks

The next step is to choose the disk from which you want to clone data. Take a look at the view of the tool. It probably shows you some disk options. First, choose the source disk, confirm it, and then choose the target disk.

Step 7: Restart the device

After you have proceeded from the previous step, you are typically asked to restart your device. To do a successful restart, close all applications, files, and so on.

The data migration process takes place during the restart. The length of the restart may greatly vary based on the data volume, software, and much more. Be patient!

Step 8: Let the computer shut down once more

When the migration completes, your computer restarts once more automatically. At this point, any external data source might be disconnected from your computer.

Step 9: Start a computer

Now start the computer and take a look at the target folder to access the migrated data.

The migration should now be completed!

Wrap Up

That is a whole bunch of data migration software. With these tools, you can easily clone your disk and migrate data between systems.

Choosing the right type of data migration software depends on a bunch of things, including:

Data size

Reasons for migration, including

Security concerns

Updating business infrastructure

Before choosing the right type of data migration tool, it is wise to read reviews of the best migration tools like this list. In addition, you should think about your use case not to over-or underpay for software.

I’m sure you were able to find something useful on the list.

6 Pillars Of A Successful Blog

While I don’t believe much in dwelling on failures and mistakes, I do believe we can learn from them.  Often other people can learn from your failures as well. By sharing these experiences we keep history from repeating itself.  Every year I like to take a look back at my blogging efforts and examine what I’d do differently if I was building my platform today. These mistakes have helped me to determine what I consider the pillars of a successful blog.

1. Purpose/Message/Mission

Knowing the purpose, message, and mission behind your blog when you start is a bit of a double edged sword. If you know what this is when you start consider yourself lucky.  But, you also have to be open to the possibility that it will change because building a platform  is a voyage of self discovery. It’s a professional journey as much as it as a spiritual one.

If you don’t know the purpose, message or mission behind your blog, don’t  worry. In many cases it reveals itself to you. If you’re a business owner you may be thinking this doesn’t apply. If that’s the case I encourage you to go back and the read what corporate blogs could learn from personal blogs.  Once you become clear on the purpose, mission and message of your content, the right people show up in droves. It’s when things go from message to a movement.

 2. Email Newsletter

In a world where people spend half their days on Facebook, it might seem odd that an email newsletter would be so important. Every single blogger or content creator I’ve ever talked to has said that biggest mistake they’ve made was not building their email list sooner.  A book marketing strategist for a New York Times best selling author told me that emails resulted in ten times more book sales than social media.  They may not see your latest status update or tweet but email gives you direct contact to your potential reader or buyer. Another thing to consider about email is that people tend to reveal quite a bit more through email correspondence because it’s private.

3. A Free E-Book/Manifesto

Besides the fact that it will help you build your email list, a free book or manifesto can have several other benefits. We’ve all had those friends who show up at our house late when we’re watching a movie and make us pause the movie to explain what’s happening. In the case of your blog you don’t have the option to pause and do this for every new reader that shows up. A free e-book gives you the option to catch the reader up on your ongoing narrative. It can also cause your ideas to spread:

Chris Guillebeau wrote a A Brief Guide to World Domination. It was downloaded over 100,000 times and eventually led to a book deal.

Marcus Sheridan at the Sales Lion requires every potential customer to read his free e-book. It helps him eliminate customers who are not a fit, and because of this he has to do no outbound selling.

4. A Product/Business Model

As you build a platform you have to think about what value you’re going to create in exchange for money. There’s no right answer to this. It’s going to be different in every case. But if all you do is produce really good content and build a blog that gets a decent amount of traffic, that doesn’t equate to revenue.

There’s nothing wrong with packaging your content and selling it. In that case one kind of value you create is convenience.  Packaging and repurposing content is how some of the world’s biggest media companies generate tons of revenue. Examples include books turned into movies,  movies released on DVD and tv shows turned into boxed sets. Maybe your model is services.  You might be an expert in a particular field, and your blog serves as a way to market your expertise.

The bottom line is this. It might seem obvious, but you have to sell something on your site to make money.

5. Site Design

In the online world people judge a book by its cover.  I’ve seen people who have really impressive bios with terrible site design. The lousy site design made me question their credibility and lose interest in their content.  Good design completely alters brand perception

If you can afford to do it, hire a skilled designer. It will be one of the best possible investments you could make  in your platform.

If you can’t afford to hire a designer, embrace simplicity. Use a premium wordpress theme and make the site as clean as possible.

One other mistake I made in the design of my own site was designing based on what I thought would look good.  A valuable lesson I learned was that you need to design your site based on the actions  you want people to take.

6. Effective Self Promotion

If you create something and don’t tell anybody about it, it’s kind of useless. Self promotion gets  a bit of bad rap in the online world. When people hear that they go to the other extreme and don’t do any self promotion. A friend the other day told me we need to get over this idea that it’s bad to sell via social media. It’s a bit of a balancing act.

If you wrote a book and think it would be of value to your followers, feel free to tweet it out once a week.

Share a tip from the book, but include a link back to the book.

Do the same for your services or information products.

If you don’t promote your content you can’t expect anybody else to. If you don’t think it’s worth sharing why should anybody else?

If you look at any successful blog, you’ll see that all these pillars are in place. Are you missing any? What could you do today to solidify the foundation of your platform.

4 Ways To Supercharge Your Google Analytics Data

Download our Free Resource – Google Analytics Fast Start – 10 mistakes to avoid

This guide in the Smart Insights ‘Fast Start’ series gives you a checklist of issues to review to improve your implementation.

Access the

Reap the benefits of Google Tag Manager

Most of the recommendations you’ll read about here utilize Google Tag Manager (GTM) to enhance your Google Analytics data. Tag Manager acts as a link between your site and your Google Analytics data, helping you to set up marketing tags and tracking without needing to write any code or use your development team’s resources.

If you want to learn more about Google Tag Manager then it’s well worth taking the free course from Google to understand how it works, and whether you can further enhance your marketing reports to reflect your objectives.

Measure on-page readership with scroll tracking

Tracking the readership of your articles and blog content can be a challenge without some additional setup in Google Analytics. Often, you’ll find that article pages have a very high bounce rate. That’s because the majority of article pages receive single-page visits, meaning users don’t visit any other page while on your site. The result is a lack of data on how people used your page – did they leave because they couldn’t find what they wanted, or were they able to complete what they needed to do?

Scroll tracking is a solution for this, and a must-have for any content-heavy site. This allows you to trigger Google Analytics events when users reach 25, 50, 75, or any other percentage of your choosing in terms of depth on your page. That means you’ll learn what percentage of users actually read an entire page, or at what point on the page they tend to drop off.

You’ll then need to set the following options:

Vertical Scroll Depths – I typically use 25, 50, 75, 90 and 100. Both 90 and 100 are in there as in many cases, users won’t scroll all the way to the very bottom – think about how deep your footer is, especially on mobile. 90% may be a more accurate representation of someone reading an entire article

Horizontal Scroll depths – You can also measure horizontal scrolls, though I rarely use this. Besides, if you’re building websites that go horizontally instead of vertical, you should probably stop!

All Pages or Some Pages – You may only want to apply scroll tracking to a certain subfolder like your blog, or set up multiple sets of scroll tracking with different depth percentages for different templates or areas of the site

Save your settings, publish your changes, and then use preview mode in Tag Manager to test it’s working. The debug console should show your scroll depth events being triggered under the Data Layer tab:

The next step is to set up your Google Analytics Tag using the following steps:

Choose Universal Analytics as the tag type

Name the Category Scroll Depth (include the section of the site if you’ve decided to limit this to a single subfolder rather than the entire site)

For the Action label, use the Page Path variable to pull in the page’s URL

For Label, use the Scroll Depth Threshold. You can add a % symbol after the variable (marked by double curly brackets) so the values you get in your Analytics reports will show as 25%, 50%, etc

Content groupings

You’ll be able to group your content into a logical structure and then analyze aggregated metrics for these groups as well as individual URLs.

If you use WordPress, then this is very easy to set up using Google Tag Manager and the Google Tag Manager for WordPress plugin.

First, set up the GTM plugin on your WordPress site and verify that the GTM container is appearing by using Google Tag Assistant. You may want to ask a developer to do this for you.

Post type

Post author name

Repeat these steps for the other groups:

Slot 2: Post Tags

Slot 3: Page Post Type

Slot 4: Post Author

Finally, the set up needs to be completed in Tag Manager.

Index 1: {{Post Category}}

Index 2: {{Post Tags}}

Index 3: {{Page Post Type}}

Index 4: {{Post Author}}

Track outbound links

Again, this is really easy to set up with Google Tag Manager:

Name your trigger “Outbound Link Trigger”

The next step is to connect the trigger to your Google Analytics Tag. Still, within Tag Manager, complete the following steps:

Choose Universal Analytics as the tag type

Add your Google Analytics Settings variable to the tracking ID

Choose Event in the Track Type field

Under Category, choose Outbound Link

Under Label, choose Page Path

Track Google My Business searches with UTM parameters

If you have one or more bricks and mortar locations, then you’ve likely set up each with their own Google My Business page, allowing you to appear in Google Maps and local search results. As a result of this, you may see a panel with information about your business appear in Google search results, including a “website” button, such as the one below:

You can also incorporate this traffic into your organic traffic by using “organic” as your campaign medium in your UTM parameter. For many, this makes sense as this traffic technically is organic, however alternatively you can choose any campaign medium of your choice. Just be aware that you may see this traffic listed as (other) in your channels report, which you can find out more about here.
