Suggested March 2024 Best Voice Recording Apps For Iphone And Ipad

Students who record lectures, business users who record meetings, or an aspiring artist who records ideas on the go. There are many different people use, or could use, a voice memo app. Apple does include a stock application, however its features are rather limited. To break through the crowded hodge podge that is the App Store, we went searching for some of the best voice recording apps for iPhone and iPad.

Audio recorders in particular are very hard to narrow down. There are just countless offerings from large companies, to one off developers. There was a number of different criteria that went into our ranking. This includes: format options, quality, cloud storage/export options, and any other unique features they may include.

Recorder Plus

Recorder Plus is my recommendation for best professional recording app. The UI is modern, if not a bit cluttered at times. The app itself is free, with a huge variety of features available as in app purchases. This can be good and bad, depending on how you look at it. On one side, it allows you to try the app, then unlock only features you would use. So you don’t have to pay for extraneous options. But on the flip side, if you purchase everything, it winds up being the most expensive option on the list.

The wealth of features here is fantastic. It offers all formats you could want. There are 8 cloud drives you can tie into to store your files as well. Inside the app it offers decent organizational options such as custom file names and folders. When you playback your recordings, you can change the speed, as well as trim them if need be.

While it does offer the ability to lock the app and protect your recording, it doesn’t support Touch ID. That is one thing I expect these days in any app that is password protected, however not many others include password protection, let alone Touch ID, so it isn’t as if this is behind the competition.

Device support: iPad, iPhone

Recording formats: MP3, MP4, CAF, WAV, M4A, AAC

Sharing: Share Sheet, email (multiple at once), Box, Dropbox, Wi-Fi, Web dev, Google Drive, FTP, Sugar Sync, and Skydive.

Notable features: Many overall features. Lots of cloud storage options. Get the app for free, and purchase only features you will use.

Cost: Free (Pro features available via in app purchase)

Just Press Record

While Recorder Plus is a fantastic app, has a wealth of professional features, it isn’t always my go-to app when I need to make a recording. That honor gets bestowed upon Just Press Record. There is something about how dead simple this app is. So simple, there isn’t even a settings menu. What do you do? You literally, just press record.

The app doesn’t mess around with different recording formats, or qualities. You just get high quality M4A (AAC) audio files. You don’t have a bunch of in-app purchases either. When you buy the app you get everything out of the box.

What is also handy, is that the iOS app includes iPad, and Apple Watch support. So you can actually create recordings from your wrist. On the Mac, they have a separate app available. So you can use that to create and view your recordings as well.

What I am really saying is, for the casual user this may be the best app. You just don’t get to have much configurability.

Device support: iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac

Recording formats: M4A (AAC)

Sharing: Share Sheet, iCloud Drive

Notable features: Most clean and modern UI. Very simple to use. Use 3D Touch to record right from the home screen. Supports 3D Peek and Pop within the app. Automatically syncs all files via iCloud Drive. Record from your Apple Watch, or while taking notes in split screen on iPad.

Cost: $2.99

Voice Recorder HD

Voice Recorder HD is a really great voice recording app. It has a wealth of features, though a UI that is a bit dark and skeuomorphic for today’s design aesthetic.

It doesn’t support iCloud Drive but you can sync all of your files to a linked Dropbox account which could even be more ubiquitous and allow more accessibility.

Another notable feature is Audio Boost. This helps reduce background noise, and amplify voices for those that talk quietly, or are far away from the mic.

Lastly, this also supports Apple Watch to record straight from your wrist.

Device support: iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch

Recording formats: WAV (M4A via in app purchase)

Sharing: Share Sheet, Dropbox

Notable features: Audio Boost to more clearly hear muted audio sources. Link Dropbox to sync your files.

Cost: $2.99 (More features via in app purchase)

Honorable Mentions

360 Writer – Audio Recorder

360 Writer – Audio Recorder is a handy tool that has some useful features not present in others. For instance, you can set up a recording reminder. So maybe you always need to record your Discreet Mathematics lecture, every day at 10am. You can set this in the app to remind you at that time, to start recording the lecture.

It has new iOS features like 3D Touch on newer Apple devices so you can record from your Home screen. Handily, one of the best features is the ability to add text, images, or markers inside the recording. So if you recorded an hour long meeting, you could take photos of the presentation, then on playback, see that image and the time stamp it is relevant.

If you’d like, you can have them transcribed, however this is a surcharge, available for $1.00 a minute.

Evernote

Evernote is commonly known as a way to take notes. Lots and lots of notes. That is still absolutely the case. However, they added not long ago the ability to tie voice recordings.

This means you can easily be recording a lecture, while taking written notes at the same time, and tie them together. Since this is Evernote, all the features come with great syncing to any device that they support.

This app looks a little clunky, but it has one killer feature that makes it worth consideration. That is the ability to convert your audio notes, to text. It supports 44 languages, and in my testing, works fairly well. Both audio, and text notes are stored inside the app.

Conclusion

While these apps did made it, this by no means is an exhaustive list. There are many more voice recording apps for iPhone and iPad that are still out there that we didn’t touch on.

So, before it’s time to sleep again, check out these alarm clocks app and download the one that suits your bill.

1. Alarmy – Editor’s choice

Alarmy seems like an app developed by a fellow sleepyhead who understands exactly what heavy sleepers need. It is not as simple as turning off a loud alarm; you’ll have to do some pre-selected activity to silence the alarm.

And though locked under premium, the app also has a neat wake-up check setting and backup louder alarm sounds for the extra stubborn sleepers.

Pros

Interesting, doable tasks for the morning

Sleep assistance

Quick alarm for reminders

Who would have thought you’d need all this from an alarm clock? But Galarm comes as fun and much-needed surprise. More than just waking you in the morning, it can double as a daily planner, organizer, and collaborative tool.

It is overflowing with features from future alarms (any day, any time), flexible repetition (daily water reminder), alarm history to ring on silent/vibrate. But the USP is group alarms, buddy alarms, and alarm chat.

You can set the alarm for an impending meeting, luncheon, party, etc., and add participants. And on the dot, the alarm will go off for all participants. You can even set the alarm for a buddy; imagine reminding them about a date??

Pros

Feature-packed app

Allows future and repetitive alarms

Cons

Register your number for group alarms

And not just wake up; you can also use the app as a sleep aid and play your favorite songs or white noise. If you’re a chronic snoozer, choose an activity to stop the alarm, like shake the device or solve a math puzzle.

Furthermore, the app boasts a countdown timer for your vacation, anniversary, birthday, etc., a multifunctional timer for cooking or workout, a weather report section, and even a handy flashlight.

Pros

Wakes you up with your favorite music

4. Alarm Clock HD – Best for Apple Watch owners

Alarm Clock HD is a multifunctional alarm app packed with various customization. There are endless options of theme colors, sleep timer, flashlight, music library sync, and more.

The main digital clock boasts Apple-Watch-like complications that show date/day, current weather, and battery level. You can also follow the latest Tweets and news directly from the app; however, this is limited to paid users.

And though it doesn’t support as much customization as the Alarm Clock for Me, it offers an Apple Watch app that gives it a leg up.

Pros

Add playlist as alarm tone

Has an Apple Watch app

A wide array of color selection for the clock

Cons

Limited options for repeating alarms

Premium version is slightly expensive

Price: Free (Premium subscription starts from $1.49/month)

5. Loud Alarm Clock – Best for super-heavy sleepers

The Loud Alarm Clock offers the loudest possible alarms, staying true to its name. Interestingly, these alarm sounds will surprise you, so you don’t get used to them. They can be anything from somebody shouting at you to warning buzzers.

Beware, they can be too loud and scary at times; my husband almost killed me because of it. But that also means that the strongest of sleepers (we call them Kumbhakarna in Hindi) can be shaken awake by it.

And while the app doesn’t offer any other elaborate features, there is a voice assistant Jarvis. Maybe an ode to Marvel’s Tony Stark, this Jarvis can tell you the time, toggle on the flashlight, and tell you the weather.

Pros

Super loud alarm tone

Simple-to-use app

Surprise voice every time

Built-in voice assistant

Cons

Not for faint-hearted

Can change theme only with payment or tasks

Pros

Wakes you up gently in light sleep

Track your sleep and wake up mood

Great built-in sleeping aid

7-day free trial

Apple Watch app

Cons

Expensive for an alarm app

Slightly complex UI

Price: Free (In-app purchases start from $2.99)

7. iOS native app – Most minimal

Yes, Apple’s native Clock app has its limitations, but it works great as an alarm clock. Plus, other perks like windows and sleep focus mode also come into play if you use the built-in bedtime feature.

And while you can’t choose a custom playlist, you can surely connect with Apple Music for a favorite song or select one from purchased or downloaded songs. Overall, it is an effective alarm clock app, though not as feature-packed as others on the list.

Pros

Easy-to-use app

Syncs with the Health app and other Apple devices

Free of charge

Cons

Can’t set custom reminders

Alarms don’t auto-delete

Limited features

Price: Free

Download

8. Motion Alarm Clock – Most fun alarm

Perfect for someone who isn’t a heavy sleeper but will enjoy some tasks to recharge your senses before the day begins. It is pretty basic; the alarm won’t stop unless to shake your iPhone.

What’s more? You can set the number of shakes as per convenience and even lock the alarm to prevent you from cheating. The app also features custom wake-up sounds, including randomized playlists, a text-to-speech tidbit, bedtime reminders, and super short snooze.

However, a feature my better half loved is ‘Don’t wake my spouse.’ You can silence the alarm repeatedly for a couple of seconds, not disturbing their sleep pattern.

Pros

Shake iPhone to stop alarm

Custom wake-up sounds

Spouse-friendly feature

Daily bedtime reminder

Cons

The UI is not that clean

Expensive premium

Price: Free (Premium costs $7.99)

Age recommendation: 7-16

Object-oriented programming language

Step-by-step, play along with tutorials

I have tinkered with Hopscotch for a whole week while reviewing it for a particular series. Instead of teaching codes strings, the app uses a gamified, drag and drop interface to teach the fundamentals of coding.

The idea is to help kids explore, learn and create games, art, or stories and showcase it to the app’s community. In the process, they learn the basic principles, build interest in coding, and spark their creativity.

Agreed they are not learning a particular programming language. But after a few weeks of playing with Hopscotch, they’ll grasp any new language much quickly.
