Suggested December 2023 Bikini Atoll Likely Still Too Radioactive For Resettlement

Between 1946 and 1958, the United States waged nuclear war on emptied islands in the Pacific. Bikini Atoll and the Enewetak Islands were evacuated first, their inhabitants moved from the blast. All in all, around 200 people were evacuated, but the plan was never that the islands be permanently abandoned. Now many of the displaced and their descendants want to move back to the islands, but leftover radiation is the greatest obstacle. When will it be it safe to move back to the site of 67 nuclear tests?

A team of researchers visited the islands to find out. Their new study, led by Emlyn Hughes from Columbia University’s Center for Nuclear Studies, updates estimates of the islands’ radiation levels. In August 2023, the team traveled more than 1,000 miles in two weeks, getting radiation readings on some of the islands in the Enewetak Atoll, Bikini Atoll, and Rongelap Atoll. These readings were then compared with radiation readings from Majuro Atoll in the southern Marshall Islands (a control island, for the purposes of the study) and with readings of Central Park in New York City.

Central Park and the Majuro Atoll experience 100 and 9 millirems of radiation per year, respectively. Enewetak had the lowest radiation levels, at 7.6 mrem/y, which makes sense, since the island has had extensive cleanup efforts. Rongelap has higher levels at 19.8 mrem/y, and Bikini Atoll has the most radiation of the islands studied, with a mean of 184 mrem/y. The authors note their estimates disagree with earlier estimates from the mid-1990s, which indicated a level of radiation close to what this study found in 2023, despite the fact that 20 years of decay happened between the studies.

From Hughes et al:

However, it’s not clear how much of that radiation would find its way into the bodies of the islands’ human inhabitants, or how much of it stems from nuclear tests. The authors continue:

As it is, Bikini Atoll is the site of a narrow apocalypse, a still-open wound from the Cold War. The study argues that the wound still festers, and encourages more study before people move back. Idyllic as the islands may look to the naked eye, the bombs blasted into the site decades ago extend their deadly reach into the present, vengeful ghosts of our atomic dawn.

Bikini Atoll

Pretty, deadly.

Update: A previous version of this story misstated the exposure levels of Central Park, and identified the wrong researcher as lead on the project. The story has since been corrected.

Why My WordPress Admin Dashboard Is Too Slow? – Webnots

Running a WordPress site is not an easy task. One of the pain problems with WordPress is working with the slow admin dashboard. This will affect your productivity as you need to regularly work on the admin panel for publishing content. If you are struggling with slow admin dashboard, here are few reasons and tips to speed up.

Related: Beginners guide to WordPress admin panel.

WordPress Backend and Frontend

Remember, we talk about optimizing the admin panel which is the backend of your site. If you are looking for optimizing page load time, checkout our article on things that could kill the speed of your frontend. WordPress backend uses the styles and scripts from wp-admin folder to load admin functions. You can check the wp-admin folder content by downloading the WordPress package from the official site or by logging into your server using FTP.

Besides the core components, the admin page loading time also depends on specific theme and plugins installed on your site.

Fix Slow WordPress Admin Dashboard and Post Editor

Check internet connection

Poor hosting

Disable dashboard widgets

Disable options with Screen Options

Avoid using heavy theme and plugins

Cleanup database

Disable heartbeat API

Upgrade PHP and WordPress

Check caching setting

Reinstall WordPress admin

1. Blocked or Slow Connection

The first thing you need to check when noticing slow WordPress admin panel is to check your internet connection. Slow internet connection will affect the loading of admin scripts and take long time to load them. Make sure, you are using strong Wi-Fi network or using cable to connect your computer to internet.

2. Poor Hosting

Many of us think hosting, plugins and themes will affect the frontend loading time of WordPress site. However, the truth is factors like poor hosting will affect the backend heavily compared to frontend.

Unlike frontend pages, the WordPress backend is not cached. This means, every page is loaded by fetching the data from database. Therefore, the backend speed highly depends on the hosting power that allows you to fetch and load the data fast. Using poor hosting will impact the speed, which is especially true for larger websites using shared hosting.

If you get good traffic, consider moving to cloud or dedicated server. This will help users to load frontend pages faster and you can also use the admin dashboard without issues.

3. Disable Dashboard Widget

By default, you will see the dashboard section when logging into WordPress admin panel. Many plugins and commercial themes will add widgets to the dashboard. This will drastically pull the speed down during startup. For example, the popular WooCommerce plugin will add tracking widget in dashboard. Similarly, Yoast SEO plugin will add quick status widget. These widgets will dynamically get the data when logging in and slow down the admin panel.

showing on top of the right corner.

Unselect the unnecessary options to remove those widgets from loading at startup.

Disable Widgets in Dashboard

Now, you will feel the login is faster without those unnecessary widgets on the dashboard.

4. Disable Unnecessary Screen Options

Similar to dashboard section, each screen has lot of options in WordPress admin panel. For example, “All Posts” section will show the list of posts with multiple columns like featured image, categories, tags, published date, etc. You can use the screen options to disable unnecessary options to load the page faster.

Screen Options in All Posts Page

You can also disable the quick access menus added by plugins and themes on the top bar.

5. Heavy Themes and Plugins

Commercial themes offer a custom panel for customizing your site. The first requirement for using such a custom panel is to increase PHP execution and memory limit on your server. Without explaining, you can understand these themes load heavy scripts on the admin panel. We strongly recommend to use the default WordPress customizer, instead of using themes that offer additional custom panels.

As already mentioned, all popular plugins will load scripts on the admin pages. You can or “Inspect Element” option. You will be surprised to see all plugins from wp-content folder will load some sort of CSS/scripts on your admin pages.

View Source in Admin Page

Therefore, use simple plugins and theme especially if you are using shared hosting server

6. Disable Heartbeat API

Plugins use heartbeat API in WordPress to get real-time updates to the dashboard widgets. Good example is a WooCommerce plugin that will show the live sales numbers in the dashboard widget. Check whether you need to have live data, otherwise disable heartbeat API to reduce load on your server. This will also help to improve the page loading time of your admin pages.

7. Cleanup Database

As mentioned before, admin pages will load dynamically by querying the database. Large database with unnecessary entries will increase the query execution time and hence delay the loading of admin pages. Yoast, WooCommerce and many other plugins will add database tables and entries in wp_options table to load the resources on all pages. This is annoying as you don’t need to have these plugins on many of the admin pages.

The best solution is to clean up the database regularly to delete expired entries like transients. Also, deleing the plugins will not remove the database table and entries. Therefore, check whether any unused content is still hanging on your database and delete them to improve the performance.

8. That PHP Stuffs

WordPress is nothing but PHP scripts that helps to assemble content from the backend database. PHP as a scripting language has a life cycle and upgraded continuously. Hence, check your WordPress and PHP versions are up to date to avoid slow admin pages. Remember, PHP 7 is multi-fold faster than PHP 5.6 in terms of database query execution time. Thus, using the old PHP versions could be the potential reason for slowing down your dashboard.

Note: You have to update WordPress core, PHP version on your server, theme and plugins used on your site. You can use the “Site Health” feature to check whether any incompatibilities issues hindering your site. Consult with you host, if you need to change the PHP parameters like MAX_INPUT_VARS, memory limit or any other value in chúng tôi file.

9. Check Caching Setting

Admin pages are not cached by default. However, plugins like W3TC allows you to setup object and DB caching that will cache all individual objects. This is meant for reducing query execution time, however put load on your server. In most shared hosting scenarios, this will potentially slow down the site as well as admin panel. Disable these options and check whether it helps to load the admin pages faster.

In addition, if you use caching plugin, we recommend to disable caching of pages for admin user to avoid problems when editing and viewing the modified content.

10. Reinstall WordPress admin

As mentioned, WordPress uses the content from wp-admin folder to assemble admin pages. Therefore, simply overwriting wp-admin folder may help to overcome corrupted files and load the pages quickly.

You can download the WordPress package from official site and extract the wp-admin folder.

Login to your server using FTP and rename the wp-admin folder to something like old-wp-admin.

Now upload the wp-admin folder from the package to your server.

Login back to your dashboard and check whether the pages are loading faster.

If something is not working, rename wp-admin folder to new-wp-admin and change the old-wp-admin folder to wp-admin.

We don’t recommend this as the root cause of the slowdown in most cases is PHP, database, hosting, plugins and themes.

Realities Of Raid: Data Loss Still Exists

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) technology has been around for many years, and has proven to be a reliable and convenient storage option. More and more companies have turned to these systems to manage their vast amounts of data since they not only boast significantly better reading/writing speeds over single drive servers and better fault tolerance should a drive fail, but also because they offer far superior data protection. However, as is the case with all technology, nothing is fool proof, including RAID devices.

RAID systems are great for data protection because they allow data to be written to multiple hard disk drives so that a failure of any one drive in the array does not result in the loss of any data. RAID systems also increase the system’s fault tolerance – that being the system’s ability to continue operating when presented with a hardware (or software) failure – as should be experienced when a hard drive fails in one of the redundant configurations of RAID.

Because RAID systems offer this built-in protection and businesses are focused on finding solutions that protect their data and help them avoid the downtime that accompanies data loss, most businesses rely on them to house their mission critical data such as financial data and business system data (email, back office, large database application data).

But what happens when there is a major issue with the RAID system that results in the data becoming inaccessible? Although RAIDs are specifically created to guard against data loss, they are still susceptible to total system failures if multiple drives experience problems at the same time. Other problems can occur when RAID controllers don’t recognize the drives in the array or if a drive is removed from a hot swappable drive bay and a new one is replaced in the wrong order.

The bottom line is that, just like single hard drive systems, RAID systems can also experience problems that can lead to data loss – the difference is, with a RAID failure, the problem can literally cripple a business or halt operations since the data stored on the RAID array is usually business critical.

Unfortunately, after experiencing a RAID malfunction, many businesses give up hope if they are told by their own IT staff, vendors, technical support or consultants that their data is inaccessible with no chance for recovery. When RAID problems happen, most think it is the end of the line for that data – if the RAID is broken, there is no way to get the data back. This simply isn’t true and businesses need to know that they do have options if their RAID system stops working. Data recovery providers can fix broken RAIDs, but the key is to work with RAID recovery experts to ensure that the most critical data has the best chance to be saved.

Often times, IT staff will attempt to fix the system by relying solely on the original RAID configuration, documented administrative procedures, or will attempt to force a RAID controller or drives in a RAID into a particular configuration which usually results in even greater damage to the customer’s data. However, RAID experts know that rather than forcing normal procedures, one should figure out the RAID “by hand,” which means that they look at every sector of data across all of the drives in a system to put it back together.

Specifically, they don’t rely on the original RAID configuration because it may have flaws in it. By rebuilding the distributed data blocks, drive order and data symmetry manually, even the most challenging RAID system can be recovered.

Experienced Engineers even have the ability to work on RAID systems if the original hard drive has failed by reconstructing the RAID virtually. More importantly, some experienced companies can often recover the RAID system in the field remotely via Internet or dial-up connection so the customer doesn’t have to pull out drives and racks for shipping. This is an important benefit as it allows the fastest possible recovery for critical data – often times getting businesses back up and running in only a matter of hours.

In this first-hand account, Marc Valle from GBDH Design Group, an architectural-engineering business based in Sacramento, Calif. says they were in the process of transferring data to a new server when one of the drives in the RAID system failed. As such, they were unable to have a complete back-up prior to the operation.

With mission critical data lost, Marc was panicked that the company would not have been able to continue in business without the data. After using a recovery service that was inexperienced in RAID arrays, they turned to the engineers at OnTrack who were able to recover 99 percent of the data and keep them operating.

Jim Reinert serves as senior director of Software and Services for Ontrack Data Recovery. In this position since April 2004, Reinert handles the technology and business development and product line management of the recovery services and software business lines. With Ontrack since 1987, Reinert has held a variety of positions with the company, including software engineer, engineering manager and Director of Technology. Reinert holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from St. Could State University.

Why The War On Smartphone Bezels Is Going Too Far

The battle to kill the smartphone bezel is going too far. In just a few hours, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 10, a gorgeous phone dripping with visual appeal mostly due to its bezel-less design.

And I’m done with all of it. I’ll admit that Infinity Displays and Dewdrop screens make for gorgeous renders—you need look no further than the leaked Note 10 shots to see that. But when you get past the prettiness, the only thing that thin bezels do is make our phones harder to use and easier to break.

Less bezel, more problems

The dream, of course, is to make the world’s first completely bezel-less phone. Several companies have shown off pie-in-the-sky concepts that shift components and buttons away from the screen, or under it—Oppo has already developed an in-screen selfie camera. Barely-there bezels are already a sign that you’ve paid more for your smartphone than you probably should, but the ultimate status symbol will be owning the first phone with a 100-percent screen-to-body ratio.

Christopher Hebert/IDG

Samsung dramatically reduced the bezels on the Galaxy S10+ (right) as compared to the S9.

Once you get over the gorgeousness of curved glass, though, what are we really gaining with edge-to-edge displays? They’re more breakable, and more prone to accidental touches.

Once you’ve lost front-facing stereo speakers, iris scanners, and IR blasters, you’ve lost a lot of the character, too. Ever-shrinking handsets have even sacrificed battery capacity, all in the name of bezel-free displays.

Now there’s a good chance that selfie cams, too, are going to get worse before they get better. Oppo’s in-screen camera has a lower quality than usual selfie cams, so it relies on algorithms for things like haze removal, HDR, and white balance. Based on my experiences with computational photography that isn’t powered by Google’s AI, results have been less than stellar.

Apple’s iPhone XS is pretty close to the sweet spot. Compared to the Galaxy S10’s barely-there display edges, its two-millimeter bezels may as well be an inch thick. The iPhone XS is easier to hold, easier to unlock, and just as nice to look at, but Samsung would never dream of offering a flagship phone without an Infinity Display, even if using it is a balancing act between slippery and cumbersome.

Biometric breakdown

I’m not sure these onscreen fingerprint sensors count as progress. I’ve tested several, and none are even remotely as good as a physical scanner. They’re slower and clumsier, and at least half the time they simply don’t work on the first few attempts.

Michael Simon/IDG

In-display fingerprint sensors may look futuristic, but they’re a step backward.

It’s clear that the all-important next-gen biometric has taken a back seat to phone makers’ relentless assault on bezels. Samsung even dumped the iris scanner on the S10 after the bezel shrank too much for it to fit.

Christopher Hebert/IDG

The iPhone XR, left, has thicker bezels than the One Plus 6T, Pixel 3 XL, and Galaxy Note 9, but it might be the best of the bunch.

Google to the rescue

That’s why the Pixel 4 might be the most intriguing phone of 2023. Last week, Google showed off one of the premier features of its upcoming handset, and it requires a bit more bezel than you’ll find in the Note 10. In addition to a secure facial-recognition biometric, the Pixel 4 will also include a new way to control your phone.

Google

Google has crammed an array of cameras and sensors inside the Pixel 4’s top bezel.

If you took a poll of smartphone users asking whether they would be willing to sacrifice innovation, battery life, functionality, and fragility for smaller bezels, I’m pretty sure that close to 100 percent of responders would happily take a couple millimeters of bezel. It’ll be interesting to see whether Google’s stand against the trend will remind the rest of the smartphone world that real beauty is only bezel-deep.

Results Of Brexit Vote Likely To Hasten Britain’s Decline As A World Power

POV: Brexit Outcome Unlikely to Satisfy Anyone Vote likely to hasten Britain’s decline as a world power

Voters in the United Kingdom have done what many, inside the country and out, have found unthinkable. Defying the predictions of most pollsters, the British people voted last Thursday to leave the European Union (EU) by a decisive 52-48 margin. The dust has barely settled, and the full implications of the so-called “Brexit” will not be known for some time. But the impact is already far-reaching and significant; the vote has brought down Prime Minister David Cameron, it has dealt a blow to over six decades of momentum toward European integration, and it has left the future of British commerce and even the future of the United Kingdom itself uncertain. The most ironic outcome of the Brexit vote, however, is that it is ultimately unlikely to satisfy anyone—not even those who campaigned for it.

At its best, European unity is a farsighted and ambitious project, a rejection of the toxic European nationalisms that led to catastrophe in the 20th century. With origins in the six-nation European Coal and Steel Community in 1951, what has come to known as the European Union expanded over the following decades into a 28-member political and economic union. The United Kingdom joined in 1973, and has always been something of a reluctant member, refusing, for example, to join the Eurozone monetary union.

Despite Britain’s somewhat half-hearted membership history, pro-EU (“Remain”) voters in Britain are devastated in the wake of the vote. The EU has significant flaws, made most painfully evident by the Eurozone debt crisis, but free and open access to the European single market offers real benefits to British workers, consumers, and investors. Britain’s ability to compete in a global economy that includes much larger nations like the United States and China will be greatly compromised by the loss of the bargaining power and access that comes with membership.

As the longer-term implications of Brexit become clearer, even those who voted and campaigned for it will almost certainly be disappointed. In the short term, Conservative former London mayor Boris Johnson and UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage are celebrating, and Johnson may indeed become the next prime minister. And the xenophobic, anti-immigrant elements among the Brexit side may be delighted by new, tighter immigration controls that would be made possible by leaving the EU. Immigration appears to have played a key role in the vote, as a recent poll indicated that 41 percent of British voters considered immigration one of the two most important issues they were weighing.

But the underlying nationalist vision of the Brexit campaigners is a fantasy at best. What Farage hyperbolically calls the UK’s “Independence Day,” promising a Britain freed from oppression by “bureaucrats in Brussels,” will likely only hasten Britain’s decline as a world power. The Brexit logic greatly overstates Britain’s economic and political clout outside its membership in the larger EU and is ultimately a backward-looking form of British nationalism. Images of World War II spitfires and romantic tales of Britain’s lost greatness won’t build a better Britain for the future. Instead, even Brexiters are likely to suffer from a case of voters’ remorse when the realities of a more isolated Britain become clear.

Not all criticism of the EU, and thus not all Brexit energy, has come from the nationalist right. There is a left critique of the Union, too, which argues that the EU serves as a multinational, institutionalized form of neoliberalism. The “social Europe” that many on the political left hoped would institutionalize the best elements of the social democratic tradition has not materialized. Left-leaning critics of the EU, whose ranks formerly included Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, cite, for example, the austerity measures imposed during the Greek debt crisis and inequality in Britain as evidence of the EU’s shortcomings. But like their conservative counterparts, Brexiters from the left are bound to be disappointed. Leaving the EU will not magically transform Britain into a social democracy, and if Scotland becomes independent, the remaining United Kingdom will lose millions of reliably left-wing voters, and thus become a much more conservative country.

In the larger picture, both this vote and the problems that the EU has faced in recent years point to ongoing questions about sovereignty and the nature of the nation state. Critical questions about the nature and extent of EU powers, about the extent of national sovereignty retained by member states, about the future of fiscal policies among member states, and about the fate of the euro will be difficult challenges for Europe in the future. Britain has now voted to play no role in the discussions, and to go it alone. But it will face its own challenges with regard to sovereignty and nationality. In addition to the impact in Scotland, the vote to leave the EU may have destabilizing effects in Northern Ireland, which voted approximately 56-44 to remain, and where just over a fifth of committed voters reported wanting to join the Republic of Ireland before the Brexit vote. It is becoming more clear that the nation is a United Kingdom mostly in name only. But now the results are in, and the voters have spoken—they’re going it alone. In due course, however, even enthusiastic Brexiters might just wish they had chosen to stay.
