Software developers will soon be able to design universal iOS/macOS apps that work with a touchscreen or a mouse/trackpad, depending on whether they’re running on the iPhone and iPad hardware or on a Mac. The app merger initiative, dubbed Project Marzipan, comes as Apple is reportedly planning replacing Intel chips with its own Mac processors.

Mark Gurman, reporting for Bloomberg:

Later this year, Apple plans to let developers port their iPad apps to Mac computers via a new software development kit that the company will release as early as June at its annual developer conference.

Developers will still need to submit separate versions of the app to Apple’s iOS and Mac App Stores, but the new kit will mean they don’t have to write the underlying software code twice, said the people familiar with the plan.

WWDC should take place June 3-7 at San Jose’s McEnery Convention Center.

In 2023, Apple plans to expand the kit so iPhone apps can be converted into Mac apps in the same way. Apple engineers have found this challenging because iPhone screens are so much smaller than Mac computer displays.

Hopefully this won’t result in blown-up apps that would look unnatural on non-smartphone screens like those unoptimized Android tablet apps.

By 2023, developers will be able to merge iPhone, iPad and Mac applications into one app or what is known as a ‘single binary.’ This means developers won’t have to submit their work to different Apple App Stores, allowing iOS apps to be downloaded directly from Mac computers—effectively combining the stores.

I’m imagining there’d be one central store that filtered content based on platform. If I visited it on my iPhone, macOS apps would be hidden and vice versa. We’d also need an option to show all apps (like, say, showing iPad apps when browsing App Store’s iPhone-only search results) so one could download and install an app on their Mac from their phone or tablet.

Apple’s hope is that the new frameworks would spur the creation of new software, increasing the utility of the company’s gadgets. Some major developers have discontinued native macOS apps in favor of their web-based counterparts, like Twitter.

The most direct benefit will be to make life easier for the millions of developers who write software for Apple’s devices. For example, later this year Netflix would be able to more easily offer a Mac app for watching video by converting its iPad app.

By 2023, Twitter, which has mostly abandoned the Mac platform, could publish a single app for all Apple customers.

Project Marzipan, if done right, could solve those woes.

A worrying trend among lazy developers toward using third-party software frameworks for building apps once that work across many platforms has resulted in all kinds of garbage software. A very good example of that: Electron-built apps, such as Slack, NordVPN and many others. The major problem with such cross-platform apps is that they don’t really respect each operating system’s platform-specific features. As a result, you don’t get macOS-provided features like spell checking that all native Mac apps get “for free”.

Bloomberg first broke news of Project Marzipan in December 2023, saying Apple was working on new tools to help programmers design, engineer and compile a single app binary which would run across iPhone, iPad and Mac devices. It wouldn’t be until the 2023 WWDC in June 2023 that the company gave a sneak peek at the new frameworks.

We’re now in Phase 1 of Project Marzipan with Apple testing the new frameworks by porting Stocks, Home and other iOS apps to macOS Mojave. The Cupertino firm basically took the curcial iOS frameworks and adapted them for macOS and the behaviors specifically tailored to desktop computing, such as use of trackpad, mouse and windows.

The first Marzipan-built apps are pretty terrible.

Apple News, one of Mojave’s stock apps, was built with Apple’s Marzipan tools.

If you take a closer look at the Home, Stocks and News apps on your Mac, you’ll notice all sorts of inconsistencies and illogical user interface layouts. You can clearly tell that there’s some intermediary software layer allowing these iOS apps to run on macOS.

That being said, I have no doubt in my mind that Phase 2, 3 and so forth will see major improvements in terms of speed and responsiveness. And when Macs finally ditch Intel chips for Apple-designed processors, I have a feeling these ported apps will run natively on macOS.

And for those wondering, the initiative to replace Intel chips in Macs with Apple-designed ones, code-named Kalamata, is still in the early developmental stages.

Second, Apple would increase its own profits by lowering processor cost. Third, it could gain market share if those savings translate to lower-priced Macs. And fourth, using its own chips would lead to further differentiation of the Mac platform from rival products.

¿Cuándo sale a la venta el nuevo Mac mini?

Apple presentó el nuevo Mac mini de 2023 a través de una nota de prensa el pasado 17 de enero de 2023. Ese mismo día, se abrió el periodo de reservas para comprar alguno de los modelos por anticipado, pero su lanzamiento oficial no se ha producido hasta este 24 de enero de 2023.

La compañía también anunció los nuevos MacBook Pros y los nuevos chips que los alimentan, el M2 Pro y el M2 Max.

¿Cuánto cuesta el nuevo Mac mini?

Pese a que el nuevo modelo tiene ahora mejores chips, Apple ha conseguido ofrecer el Mac mini de 2023 a un precio inferior al modelo de 2023. En concreto, su precio inicial es ahora 90 € / MXN$3,500 menos que la generación anterior.

¿Qué especificaciones y diseño tiene el nuevo Mac mini?

Se rumoreaba que el nuevo Mac mini tendría un nuevo diseño, pero eso no ha sido así. Sí que merece la pena mencionar, no obstante, dos novedades, pues ahora se usan puertos USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 en vez de Thunderbolt 3 y, más importante, puedes elegir el chip que quieras.

Así, en el modelo de 2023, puedes elegir entre el Mac mini con el chip M2 estándar o un Mac mini con el chip M2 Pro, que acaba de ser anunciado.

El M2 es, obviamente, mejor que el M1 de 2023. Según afirma Apple, la GPU es hasta un 35 % más rápida gracias a los dos núcleos extra: ahora tenemos una GPU de 10 núcleos. La CPU sigue siendo de solo 4 núcleos, pero la CPU es hasta un 18 % más rápida.

Con el M2 Pro, la actualización es mayor, aunque no llega a los niveles del M2 Max de gama alta. Como todos los chips de Apple Silicon hasta ahora, utiliza el proceso de 5 nm, pero ahora lo combina con 40.000 millones de transistores, el doble que en el M2 estándar.


Ahora, también puedes elegir entre un Mac mini con una CPU de 8 núcleos o de 10. Con una CPU de 10 núcelos, obtienes 8 núcleos de rendimiento y 4 núcleos de eficiencia. Based on the WINE Project(of which Codeweavers is a major backer), CrossOver Office is intended to allow users to run Lotus Notes, Office 2000, Office XP, Quicken and Visio 2000 inside Linux. CrossOver Office Server Edition allows organizations to host their Windows applications on Linux servers.

“It allows you to deliver an application in the same way as you deliver a Web page,” Churchward said. “Any application to any client, anywhere.”

The Tarantella software supports industry standard application platform protocols RDP, X11, VT, 3270 and 5250, translates on the fly and then delivers the applications without modification, using its patented Adaptive Internet Protocol (AIP) to deliver consistent LAN performance over a varying WAN connection.

Tarantella’s software will allow CrossOver Office Server Edition to deliver Microsoft Office apps to just about any client. At it’s base, Tarantella’s freely available client software only requires Java to run, but even devices that don’t have a browser or are incapable of running Java applets can be supported, according to Churchward, with a custom binary for native client implementation. In some cases, Tarantella has even added features, like its native client implementation for Windows CE .NET devices, which adds screen re-sizing capabilities to give users a better browsing experience.

Tarantella also adds security features to the mix. Tarantella Enterprise 3 supports secure access using SSL v3, X.509 Server Certificates to prove server identity and prevent main-in-the-middle attacks, secure firewall traversal support using SSL tunneling, status and logging capabilities interface with corporate reporting and analysis tools, support for web proxy servers, including authenticating proxies, built-in authentication against RSA SecurID, LDAP, Microsoft Windows Domains and UNIX, support for basic HTTP authentication or strong authentication such as Client Certificates, SafeWord PremierAccess and Netegrity SiteMinder, support for external SSL accelerators, secure connections to application servers using SSH, and support for X authorization (Xauth).

“Citrix and Microsoft Terminal Server licenses typically cost hundreds of dollars per user,” Churchward said. “The CrossOver Officer Server Edition, optimized for the Internet, allows cost savings and convenience while eliminating the challenge of CAL [client access license] licensing procedures and providing freedom from managing Microsoft Terminal Server.”

Codeweavers said it will deliver the Internet-optimized version of CrossOver Office Server Edition, including a free single user license, to Tarantella Enterprise 3 customers. Tarantella is also making free single user licenses available.

CrossOver Office Server Edition 1.3.1 goes for $1,195 for the software. A 25 concurrent user license costs $1,185, with $4,000 for a 100 concurrent user license.

Brave Browser To Launch Its Own Search Engine

Brave, makers of an open-source web browser, are launching a privacy-focused alternative search engine that will offer options for ad-supported and ad-free search results.

Following Brave’s acquisition of Tailcat, a search engine developed by the former Cliqz team, the company announced its forthcoming product known as Brave Search.

Brave Search is being touted as “the first private alternative to Google Search and Google Chrome on both mobile and desktop.”

That’s technically true. While private alternatives to Google exist, they do not offer both a search engine and browser on mobile and desktop.

DuckDuckGo is the most successful private alternative to Google at the moment, but the one thing it’s lacking is a desktop browser. Though it does offer a mobile browser and its search engine is accessible from any browser on any device.

The Tailcat search engine will become the foundation of Brave Search, which will be integrated into the Brave browser.

Brave Search will also be accessible outside of the company’s browser by navigating to chúng tôi – though if you go there right now all you’ll see is the option to sign up to the mailing list.

There’s currently no launch date for Brave Search. Those who sign up for the mailing list will be first to use the new search engine when it’s ready for testing.

In a press release, Brave explains how its search engine differs from the ones developed by “Big Tech”:

“Under the hood, nearly all of today’s search engines are either built by, or rely on, results from Big Tech companies. In contrast, the Tailcat search engine is built on top of a completely independent index, capable of delivering the quality people expect, but without compromising their privacy. Tailcat does not collect IP addresses or use personally identifiable information to improve search results.”

DuckDuckGo is seeing record growth as well, having hit 100 million daily searches in January and surpassing Bing to become the #2 mobile search engine in the US.

Another thing that may set Brave Search apart from other alternative search engines is the potential for a premium, ad-free search experience.

The company says it’s considering offering both free and paid versions of its search engine. The free version will be subsidized with the privacy-based ad platform Brave Ads.

“We’re currently thinking through different search experiences to offer our users. While there is a cohort of users who have long clamored for a premium ad-free search experience, others prefer a free, ad-supported model. We think offering a choice is best.”

Brave Search will work seamlessly with the Brave browser, though users of the browser can continue to set any search engine as their default choice.
