New devices are seldom ‘un-rootable’ when launched. Over a period of time, developers make root exploits available for these devices. Those devices which are on Operating Systems other than the Android OS may have limits to how much elevated access can be provided to the user.
There is no uniform method to find out if a device can be rooted or not. Apps exist which will allow users to check if their device is rooted or not, such as the Simple Root Checker, but finding out if an exploit has been discovered for your device isn’t as easy. The following three broad procedures may allow the user to find out if there exists a process which will allow him to root his device.
Google it!As always, Google can save the day. It’s as easy as googling the model number of your device with a ‘How to root’ string attached, which will allow you to find a root exploit. For popular devices, and those which have been rooted, there would be numerous results to choose from. For example, as shown in our attached image, we googled ‘How to root N7100’ and established that many search results are found containing the necessary information.
Search on popular ForumsForums are websites where discussions related to specific topics can be held by users who have interests in these topics. Luckily for smartphone users, numerous such forums exist where information related to their smartphones/tablets etc can be easily found.
It is very easy to learn rooting procedures for your device on these forums, or even to ask questions and start discussions associated with your device. Some other popular smartphone forums similar to XDA are AndroidCentral forums, AndroidForums, iMore forums etc.
Root ToolsThere exist some software tools and app, which work on multiple device models and can thus be used to test the root exploit availability and root the device in one go. However, these tools do not merely give you the information regarding the availability of root exploits, they directly root the device, and therefore should be used only when the user is aware of the existing risks and is absolutely positive about rooting his device.
Different manufacturers using different operating systems have varying processes to root their devices. Let us consider the case of the two most popular mobile operating systems and analyse the general methods used to root them.
Android OSRooting Android operating systems is fairly popular, implying that exploits can be easily found for popular Android Devices and for many of the obscure ones too. Essentially rooting an Android device includes flashing a custom recovery image.
This modified firmware update will typically include the utilities required to run apps with root access. The rooting procedure would also install a typical supervisor application, such as the SuperSU app, which can be allowed to monitor and provide root access to applications.
Apple iOSA process used as iOS ‘Jailbreaking’ is used to provide administrator-level access on iOS devices, which is different in principle from rooting in two ways. Firstly, iOS systems have a strictly locked Boot loaders, which is not the case with Android devices where Boot loaders are either open or easily unlockable.
Jailbreaking for the iOS thus also involves completely unlocking the Bootloader. Other than this difference, the iOS does not allow unsigned apps to be installed on iOS while on the Android OS unsigned apps can be installed after checking the ‘Unknown Sources’ option from Security settings.
Therefore, Jailbreaking for the iOS typically involves unlocking the boot loader, providing Administrator rights, and allowing installation of unsigned apps from sources other than the Apple App Store.
The future of rooting depends a lot upon the manufacturers and consumer interest. Apple and Microsoft do not promote rooting – Google on the other hand releases open source codes which can be used by any developer, and promotes rooting both through its devices and through open source projects. HTC, Sony, Asus etc. explicitly provide the user with the ability to unlock devices and replace/modify the OS.
A vast majority of smartphone users and all over the world believe that rooting is completely a personal choice of the owner of the device, and manufacturers should have no say in it, nor should they be allowed to prevent the user from modifying a device he owns. In most countries, India amongst them, Rooting/Jailbreaking smartphones for personal usage is an entirely legal procedure. Therefore, smartphone users in India can seek and implement root exploits and enjoy the benefits of elevated access and permissions on their devices without any concerns.

I Just Upgraded My Phone And It Was An Ordeal
Data transfer depths
Moving app and file data to a new phone is essential to the upgrade process. OEMs understand this, and many create dedicated tools to make it easier. HUAWEI has its own Phone Clone app, which I intended to use to transfer my data. This is where my troubles started.
You see, the phone cloning process can’t begin without sufficient storage space — not only on the device receiving the data but on the one sending it. It’s like a moving company saying they won’t deliver your belongings to the new address unless you sling a few items first.
HUAWEI’s Phone Clone app is great, but it’s not flawless.
The 10 to 15 minute transfer process migrated most of my data as I’d hoped, but some apps needed to be installed manually — continuing the moving metaphor, it’s like the delivery company refused to bring the dining room chairs. With apps like Voice Recorder, I also needed to manually transfer the data.
It’s like a moving company saying they won’t deliver your belongings to the new address unless you sling a few items first.
So I wasn’t enamored with my new phone to start, and that was before I tried to send a WhatsApp message.
After installing the app, verifying my phone number, and adding a username, I expected I would find my most recently backed-up conversations. Turns out I had none.
Get used to scenes like this when you’re upgrading your smartphone.
I could retrieve them either by exporting them from my old phone or by backing them up to Google Drive (disabled by default in WhatsApp) on my old phone first. The trouble is, you’re locked out of WhatsApp once the number is verified on a second device.
Retrieving my previous chats could have meant:
Swapping my SIM card into the previous phone
Verifying the number
Adding a username
Using the backup tool
Swapping the SIM card back to the new device
Verifying the number
Adding a username
Restoring the chats
I didn’t think it was worth the effort to find out. I started life with my new phone without them.
Privacy problemsSuccessfully transferring data to a new phone is only one hurdle. Actually using the apps tosses up yet more problems.
After reinstalling Facebook Messenger, my “status” setting was reset to its default (my chat logs remained here, thankfully). I usually hide my online status in apps to maintain a greater sense of privacy; it was only when I started receiving messages from people I hadn’t spoken to for a while — nor wished to — that I realized it had been switched on.
My Facebook status had been switched to active after I reinstalled it (left) and a friend contacted me on WhatsApp saying they’d received a notification about my WhatsApp activities (right).
I had a similar experience with WhatsApp, where a friend received the message seen above, right concerning my WhatsApp reinstallation.
I don’t want my contacts alerted to any change in my circumstances and activities. Knowing they can contact me at any moment without my explicit consent is stressful enough.
Meanwhile, setting up the phone required answering certain privacy-related questions once again. I have answered the same questions numerous times before, and perhaps given the appropriate answers in the past — protecting my privacy while maintaining the features I wanted. This time, I accepted all out of pure frustration.
Are new phones better?The app and software experience has little to do with my phone’s creator, Honor — even the View 20’s user interface is developed by its parent company, HUAWEI. One aspect of the phone for which HONOR is certifiably responsible, though, is hardware.
With two generations between the P10 and the View 20, and both being flagship phones, I expected the View 20 to be better. Generally, it is, but it stumbles in some basic areas.

It’s very slippery, which would be fine were it not a handheld electronic device I use all the time. Smartphones are 10 years old and sold in the billions. How haven’t OEMs yet managed to grasp, erm, grip?
My other usability gripe is that the View 20’s display is just too big to comfortably operate with one hand. To tap the upper regions of it, I must lay it across my fingers rather than gripping it as I normally would. I’m constantly juggling these two holds (and juggling the phone is the last thing I should be doing with it).
Refreshing my weather widget isn’t an option when holding the View 20 with my regular grip.
Its size affects other aspects too, like typing, playing games, and fitting it into my pocket. It’s not like I was willfully ignorant of its framing as a particularly large phone either, HONOR doesn’t promote it as some “supersized” device.
The View 20 is still usable in one hand, it just doesn’t feel like it arrived after ten years of smartphone innovation and refinement. It’s harder to handle than smaller phones produced at the end of the last decade.
Getting a new phone sometimes sucksThe HONOR View 20 isn’t a worse phone than the HUAWEI P10: it’s superior in numerous ways. Further, neither HUAWEI nor HONOR are to blame for all the inconveniences I’ve encountered — I am.
I Really Want My Next Phone To Have A 10X Periscope Camera

2023’s iPhone 7 series marked a major step forward for zoom when it debuted a 2x telephoto camera, with the Android world following suit and even upping the ante with 3x telephoto shooters. We then saw a massive leap forward in 2023, as HUAWEI and OPPO debuted 5x and 6x periscope cameras.
Samsung’s recent Ultra smartphones upped the ante even further, bringing 10x periscope zoom cameras to the table. And this is certainly something I’d like to see on devices from other manufacturers.

Getting even closer to the actionBoth the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy S22 Ultra offer 10MP 10x periscope zoom cameras, allowing you to get even closer to a subject/object than with 4x or 5x cameras. They aren’t the first phones with the technology, as Huawei’s P40 Pro Plus debuted it back in 2023, but Samsung’s phones are more widely available (and can run Google’s apps out of the box).
I tried out the Galaxy S22 Ultra for a few weeks earlier this year and the 10x shooter was easily my favorite thing about it. These images are definitely not as detailed as shots taken with the primary 108MP camera and there’s some color inconsistency between lenses, but there’s still a healthy amount of detail nonetheless. Check out a few samples below.
We’ve also seen smartphone makers using telephoto or periscope cameras as a foundation for longer-range zoom, using hybrid zoom technology to go beyond the native zoom factor. The Galaxy S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra are no different. In fact, it’s possible to get usable 30x shots, but this really boils down to the scene and it isn’t always reliable. Some situations will deliver usable 30x shots while others (particularly those involving complex textures or the bright outdoors) are pretty bad. It’s not uncommon to find blown highlights, some blurriness, and ghosting at this zoom factor. Check out a few 30x samples below, as well as the accompanying 10x versions.
10x zoomed video is a thing tooOne of the more underrated things about the 10x camera is that you can indeed film video at a native 10x zoom. You can also swap between lenses while filming, though this is limited to the 4K/30fps quality option rather than 4K/60fps or 8K. Video recorded at 10x delivers good quality, being a cut above virtually every other phone out there at this zoom factor. In saying so, you’ll ideally want a tripod or gimbal for maximum stability as the combo of long-range zoom and video can make for some shaky footage compared to the main camera.

It’s clear that 30x is hit and miss and you probably shouldn’t use 100x zoom at all, but I still really appreciate the versatility of a 10x periscope camera. I was pretty amazed at the ability to grab shots of things that would usually be a blurry mess on most other phones, such as planes flying overhead or wildlife.

Sure, there are some phones that deliver decent hybrid zoom 10x results too such as the Pixel 6 Pro, but our own testing shows that Samsung still beats these devices at 10x. It doesn’t hurt that Ultra phones can also go further and get usable results after 10x thanks to hybrid zoom. Toss in 10x video capabilities and you’ve got the most flexible camera platform on the market.
Most people will be fine with a 2x to 5x camera if they really want good zoom on their smartphones, but it’s still great to have such a wide focal range on a smartphone for maximum flexibility. Here’s hoping we see more ultra-premium smartphones with 10x cameras in the future, because it’s definitely something I want to see on my next purchase.

I Like Amazon’S Fire Phone, But I Won’T Buy One
I like Amazon’s Fire Phone, but I won’t buy one
Amazon’s Fire Phone is a pretty cool piece of tech. It’s the right size, has a very respectable spec sheet, and the price is fair (not great). All that adds up to enough reason most people would want to snatch one up when it becomes available. In theory, I’d love to as well; here’s why I wont.
The Fire Phone itself is a neat concept. The screen has a pretty cool dynamic perspective that looks 3D-ish, even though it’s not. You can twist the device around to see past corners in games and such, which is a neat concept. It also supports a cool list of gestures, where flipping the phone around while still holding it scrolls through menus and allows for webpages to scroll by.
Firefly, too — pretty amazing stuff. Snap a picture of an item, and it takes you to the Amazon listing straight away. If you’re not ready to buy, it will save the item for later. Snap a picture of a scribbled-down phone number, and it will save it in a readable format for you. Amazon’s Mayday service, introduced last year with the Kindle, also comes with the Fire Phone.
It also works really well with Fire TV, where you can send a movie you find on Amazon right over, kind of like a proprietary Chromecast. It also serves as a second screen to your Fire TV viewing, which is great for those moments you can’t quite place an actor’s face to their name. Prime Music? Yeah, you get that, too.
So, great phone, right? Yup — it is. Why not get it if it’s so good, though? For all the things that make it special, those are the same things that make it uniquely concerning.
The Fire Phone ties directly into Amazon, almost all the time. I’m not talking about some sort of security risk, where big brother is spying on me. I’m talking about the utility of the phone. Fire Phone comes with a full year of Prime straight away, but after that, it gets sticky. After the year is up, I am left paying for Prime on my own.
To be fair, I pay for Prime now (and I love it). The problem with the Fire Phone is that should there come a day where I don’t want (or can’t afford) Prime, my phone just lost a lot of utility. No more flinging movies to the TV because I don’t even get streaming movies, and no more Mayday calls. No more Prime music, either.
The Fire Phone sets out to lasso you into the Amazon ecosystem further than you might already be — and that’s okay if you’re sure you want to be there long term. If you don’t, though, and get out at some point — the Fire Phone will let you down. The Amazon App Store is inferior to its Play Store and iOS App Store counterparts in almost every way.
Sans Amazon, you have a device that is adequate, but full of features that won’t work. It’s also an AT&T exclusive, and the standard smartphone pricing won’t help things along. Unless I were to ensconce myself in Prime, there’s not much reason to get this device. I like the Fire Phone, but attaching myself to Amazon so closely isn’t a decision I’m willing to make.
