When the universe first began about 13 billion years ago, all of the matter that eventually formed the galaxies, stars, and planets of today was flung around like paint splattering from a paintbrush.
Now, an international group of over 150 scientists and researchers have released some of the most precise measurements ever made of how all of this matter is distributed across the universe. With a map of that matter in the present, scientists can try to understand the forces that shaped the evolution of the universe.

The team combined data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the South Pole Telescope, which conducted two major telescope surveys of the present universe. The analysis was published in the journal Physical Review D as three articles on January 31.
In the analysis, the team found that matter isn’t as “clumpy” as previously believed, adding to a body of evidence that something might be missing from the existing standard model of the universe.
By tracing the path of this matter to see where everything ended up, scientists can try to recreate what happened during the Big Bang and what forces were needed for such a massive explosion.
To create this map, an enormous amount of data was analyzed from the DES and South Pole Telescope. The DES surveyed the night sky for six years from atop a mountain in Chile, while the South Pole Telescope scoured the universe for faint traces of traveling radiation that date back to the first moments of our universe.
Scientists were able to infer where all of the universe’s matter ended up and are offering a more accurate matter map by rigorously analyzing both data sets. “It is more precise than previous measurements—that is, it narrows down the possibilities for where this matter wound up—compared to previous analyses,” the authors said.
Combining two different skygazing methods reduced the chance of a measurement error throwing off the results. “It functions like a cross-check, so it becomes a much more robust measurement than if you just used one or the other,” said co-author Chihway Chang, an astrophysicist from the University of Chicago, in a statement.
The analyses looked at gravitational lensing, which occurs when some of the light traveling across the universe can be slightly bent when it passes objects like galaxies that contain a lot of gravity.
Regular matter and dark matter can be caught by this method. Dark matter is an invisible form of matter that makes up most of the universe’s mass, but it is so mysterious that scientists know more about what it isn’t than what it is. It doesn’t emit light, so it can’t be a planet of stars, but it also isn’t a bunch of black holes.

While most of the results fit perfectly with the currently accepted best theory of the universe, there are some signs of a crack in the theory.
“It seems like there are slightly less fluctuations in the current universe, than we would predict assuming our standard cosmological model anchored to the early universe,” said analysis coauthor and University of Hawaii astrophysicist Eric Baxter, in a statement.
Even if something is missing from today’s matter models, the team believes that using information from two different telescope surveys is a promising strategy for the future of astrophysics.
“I think this exercise showed both the challenges and benefits of doing these kinds of analyses,” Chang said. “There’s a lot of new things you can do when you combine these different angles of looking at the universe.”

At first glance, this glittering array of white dots against a black background looks like any other night sky. In reality, this image captures something much cooler— those starry white spots are actually thousands of supermassive black holes captured via radio signals. It’s the most detailed map of black holes—over 25,000 of them—ever produced to date.
Each of these black holes is swallowing dust and gas at the center of their own galaxy, millions of light-years away. These intense, hungry spirals create enough radiation, on multiple wavelengths, to reach us here on Earth. If these black holes weren’t actively devouring space particles, they would be nearly impossible to pinpoint because dormant black holes don’t give off any detectable radiation, rendering them more or less invisible.
Even in the midst of a cosmic meal capturing an active black hole, let alone thousands of them, is no easy task. The black hole’s ultra-low radio wavelengths were detected by the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), a network of 20,000 radio antennas scattered across 52 locations in Europe.
LOFAR is currently the only radio telescope network with the capability to produce high-resolution images at frequencies below 100 megahertz. As a radio wave travels across space, its frequency decreases, and so does its energy. Since signals become harder to detect at lower energies, and the energy of a wave decreases as it travels millions of light-years across space, highly-sensitive arrays like LOFAR are key to detecting the energy signatures of black holes and other phenomena across space.
Once the signals are picked up by the network of antennas, the data can be compiled into images like the one above. In this particular case, researchers compiled the radio wave data collected from each antenna to estimate the location of each black hole. “This is the result of many years of work on incredibly difficult data,” explains astronomer Francesco de Gasperin of the University of Hamburg in Germany. “We had to invent new methods to convert the radio signals into images of the sky.”

LOFAR faces a significant obstacle avoided by space-based telescopes: the ionosphere. This outermost layer of the atmosphere forms a shell of electrons and charged particles around the Earth. Stretching from an altitude of 50 kilometers above the surface to an altitude of 1,000 kilometers, it’s where the atmosphere meets the vacuum of space.
Ultra-low frequency radio waves, below 5 megahertz, are reflected back into space when they hit this atmospheric layer en route to LOFAR’s antennas on the Earth’s surface. To correct for ionospheric interference, the team of astronomers developed algorithms run by supercomputers to filter out interference every four seconds while collecting radio emissions.
“After many years of software development, it is so wonderful to see that this has now really worked out,” says astronomer Huub Röttgering of Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands.
This first image, which covers four percent of the Northern sky, combines a decade of development and analysis, and nearly 11 days worth of radio emissions absorbed by LOFAR. Researchers plan to image the entire Northern sky via ultra-low frequencies as part of the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey.
The full results of this experiment are due to be published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

As per most of the rumors and reports that we’ve come across, the Mi 7 will very likely follow the 2023 trend of slimmer bezels and a taller display than usual. Xiaomi was, in fact, the first major name in the smartphone industry to try a design outside the traditional 16:9, coming in with the OG Mi MIX that had an aspect ratio of 17:9.
The tech giant has further refined this design and recently launched the Mi MIX 2, Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus with the much better 18:9 aspect ratio, meaning an even much taller screen than the Mi MIX. The fact that this design is already being used on Xiaomi’s budget phones means that it could be the new trend for the company, further asserting the rumor that the Xiaomi Mi 7 will also sport this trending design.
According to a recent report, the Mi 7 will get two variants: a standard model and a Plus model. Where the former will rock a 5.65-inch screen, the latter will come in with an even bigger 6-inch Samsung-made OLED display with a QHD resolution.
Even better, an XDA report points to an Always-On-Display screen, where users will be able to see things like time, date, up to 3 notification badges and battery level.
The previous Mi 6 sported a glass/ceramic body which gave the device a premium look. As per an alleged Xiaomi Mi 7 image that leaked out a while back, the company seems to be continuing with a glass back panel, but we still don’t know if a ceramic model will also accompany the standard model.

In yet another leak, a screenshot that claims to contain specs of the Mi 7 has just surfaced online, all but adding more weight to previous rumors. In the screenshot, we can see things like Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage and a massive 4480mAh battery, which honestly sounds too good to be true.
Unlike previous cases where a flagship Mi device was always the first to rock the best and greatest processor available, it appears that this year will see some tweaks to this trend. Apparently, reports surfacing from China suggest that there’s a Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S in the works and this could be the first handset to rock the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. As it is, this MIX 2S will be unveiled before the MWC 2023, thus beating Samsung to becoming the first to rock the SD845 chipset.
Other touted Xiaomi Mi 7 features include Dirac audio technology, aptX and aptX HD Bluetooth audio codecs, dual-SIM support, non-expandable storage, and NFC.
The Xiaomi Mi 6 included a dual camera setup which was pretty good in outdoor performance. Expect a similar setup on the Mi 7 as well, but with improved lenses, especially for low-light photography. The cameras are said to have a resolution of 16MP, including the one on the front.
There will definitely be improvements to the camera and the software, so expect the phone to take great pictures straight out of the box. Furthermore, the Mi 7 will include things like real-time Bokeh effect and electronic image stabilization.
Now, this is one thing that most users are always interested in. The previous model came with a decent battery with a capacity of 3350mAh. With the Mi 7 and Mi 7 Plus, we believe the battery capacities will be slightly more., especially since the phones’ footprints will be bigger and thus able to accommodate bigger batteries.
Despite the too-good-to-be-true rumor that points to a massive 4400mAh unit, a recent discovery made by XDA points to a 3170mAh battery unit. As for the Mi 7 Plus, we could be talking a slightly bigger 3500mAh unit, but don’t be surprised if things get a little bigger. Also, as mentioned earlier, the devices will most likely support wireless charging as well as the typical wired fast charging technology via a USB port, which will also double as a headphone port. Whether Xiaomi will jump to the newest Quick Charge 4.0 is still unknown, but hopefully, it does so.
In terms of software, the Mi 7 will ship with the latest Android Oreo. Since current phones are either running MIUI 9 or will be getting the update soon, the Mi 7 will definitely come with MIUI 9 that’s based on Oreo (as of this writing, MIUI 9 is based on Android Nougat). This will include several new features and a much cleaner interface than before, but more importantly, Project Treble will be baked in the device out of the box.

Halley’s trips to the inner solar system always give the Aquariids and Orionids more material to work with, even if that material does come from Halley herself, melted away by the heat of the Sun. Comets are like that. Halley stops by more often than the other comets, but it’s clear that the visits really wear her out.
Earth has plenty of other nearby neighbors. But luckily, they keep to themselves. These Near Earth Objects have a passing acquaintance with the planet—fellow commuters that know the other one is there, but who don’t end up making so much as eye contact. At least, that’s the hope. Researchers have identified about 16,885 NEO’s so far, and would really prefer that they each stayed in their own lanes.
Earth is still finding the remains from the last time a really big NEO got too close. Dinosaur bones are so hard to get out of a nice sediment. Since then, Earth’s mostly avoided NEOs at parties, though some dustups between these frenemys do occur every once in a while.
And Earth does have to deal with copycats every once in a while. For about 100 years, the little asteroid 2023 HO3 has been following Earth, dancing around the planet while it goes around the Sun—but not actually orbiting, even though it’s circling around our planet at a constant rate. This week, scientists confirmed that HO3 really is just an asteroid orbiting the Sun who happens to circle the Earth in a moon-like fashion, and not space junk.
Speaking of space junk, the Earth has that in abundance. Earth’s humans keep promising to clean it up, but don’t hold your breath. Earth keeps pulling some of that space junk down into the atmosphere, but then, instead of being grateful, they’re all worried that a space station will smash into them. Kids, amiright?
Oh, and how could we forget the Moon. This giant, solid hunk of rock hasn’t left the Earth’s side since they bumped into each other around 4.5 billion years ago. Since then, they’ve been through everything together. The Moon takes care of watering the Earth’s coasts twice a day, moving around the Earth’s oceans, and Earth’s gravity keeps them together, though it does seem like they’ve been growing apart lately.
As for other relatives, Earth keeps in touch with a few on a more long-distance basis. Look, just because they all formed at the same time, that doesn’t mean that Earth is that close to Mars or Venus. They’ve all chosen to go different ways, ok? Mercury is busy sucking up to the Sun, Venus is hot-tempered all the time, and Mars and Earth…well, they used to be way more alike than they are now. And don’t even start on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They’ve all gotten so full of themselves out there, it’s like they’re too big for Earth anymore.
But that’s fine by Earth. It’s going to keep on doing its thing around the Sun, enjoying its visitors and hoping none of them outstay their welcome.
