To live creatively, we must continually examine the consequences of our acts and, with a healthy dose of humility, adjust our goals and improve our conduct. The demands of teaching can feel overwhelming at times, and it can become easy to lose sight of the most important reason we teach: the students. Each student is special and deserves to be appreciated for his or her unique traits. By developing a system to send positive notes home on a regular basis, I have found that I keep my students’ successes in the front of my mind, and rough days are quickly put into perspective—for the students, their families, and me.
Most teachers are required to contact home when a student performs poorly in the classroom—academically, behaviorally, or both. My own teaching has positively grown through my intentionally contacting families when students perform well.
At the beginning of each school year, in addition to setting up a new grade book, I set up a chart listing every student alphabetically by last name. In the columns, I list the dates when I make contact with families, the method (email, carpool line, in-person meeting, or phone call), and the reason for contact. Throughout the year, whenever I need to contact a family, I make sure to enter it into the chart, with the goal of contacting each family with a positive note home at least once.
At the beginning of the year, I contact families who are new to the school within the first two weeks. In my experience, these families have some anxiety about their child being in a new environment, and they feel relieved when they hear that the year is going well from an adult’s perspective. It also helps for them to have a contact at the school in case of questions in the future.
As the year progresses, I set new goals. Last year, my goal was to contact half of my students’ families with a positive note by Thanksgiving. This year, I’m moving the goal to contact everyone with a positive note home before the end of January.
My practices in positive contact began my second year of teaching when sending home messages of concern began to weigh on my own spirit of optimism. I realized that if I sent a positive email each time I sent an email of concern, I could refocus my energy into recognizing the students who made the day a delight.
Now, years after that realization, I try to send positive emails before the concerns arise so that each family has a positive story to tell about their child’s school experience.
Some of the most obvious contacts are the easiest. When a student does exceptionally well on a difficult assessment like an essay or a pop quiz, I contact his or her family. But assessments are not the only opportunity to send home praise. Contact can be about a student excelling in soft skills: mediating a disagreement in group work, pairing up with a lonely student during class, or showing empathy to a classmate having a rough day. Their behavior need not be exceptional; I have sent notes about students habitually coming into the classroom and following procedures, reliably completing homework, and tackling difficult tasks with a positive attitude.
To make sure that no student has contact only for negative reasons, I color-code the fonts of the chart. Later, when I open the chart, I can quickly scan for colors and see if I have a positive note for a follow-up, typically two or three weeks after the original contact for poor performance. I take that time to observe students and note any positive moments I can in order to contact home again with a positive growth note.
Seeing Each Student
By setting an intentional goal to email home with a positive, personal anecdote, I make sure that no student is invisible in my classroom. As I scroll through my list each week, I can see which students’ families haven’t been contacted yet, and I am able to home in on those relationships and develop them intentionally. Too often, students who receive the most attention are those who are relationship-seeking with negative behaviors such as acting out or underperforming on assessments. The rest of the families might not hear from the school the entire year, despite their students’ great attitude and work ethic. Intentional tracking allows me to recognize those students for the habits they bring as well.
In the course of intentionally noticing and praising the attitudes and behaviors of my students, I’ve been able to build positive community between the school and home. Not only do parents appreciate receiving a glimpse into their adolescent’s daily life (especially when conversation might be short at home), but they appreciate their child being seen and recognized by an adult. Knowing that someone at the school is looking beyond the standards, grading, and checklists to see each child as an individual goes a long way in building rapport and credibility between the two most important parties in education: home and school.

The best Android phones of the decade: 2010-2023
Internally, the four-generation-old chipset and the now puny amount of RAM don’t hold up in benchmarks, which is to be expected. However, in general web-browsing, social media scrolling, and even light gaming, the phone performs way better than anticipated. I was assuming there would be hiccup after hiccup, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was especially impressed in gaming — even high-end 3D racing titles stayed above 60fps in my testing.
It’s no surprise that the software is to thank for this still-great user experience. It’s currently running Android 10, which it received on October 3rd, 2023 along with all other Pixel phones. That puts it ahead of a bunch of current devices from other brands.
This 2023 phone is running Android 10 before many phones released in the past 12 months.What about the camera?
The Pixel’s camera system has been updated over the years in an attempt to keep up with the latest and greatest. Whilst it isn’t too close to the best cameras that 2023 can offer, it’s not half bad for a phone that’s over three years old. Granted, there’s only one camera on each face of the Pixel, but the quality is still impressive from both shooters. In fact, the original Pixel fared remarkably well in our shootout between all four generations of flagship Pixel phones.
The above test images were shot on an overcast afternoon in slightly low light. This is where you’d expect the Pixel’s small sensor, closed-down aperture, and lack of optical stabilization to hinder performance. There’s a significant but not overbearing level of contrast which is evident in the cars in the left image and the bushes in the right image. However, a good level of dynamic range and detail is also present in both images. The mood of the afternoon is definitely reflected in the images, which is to say stormy and gloomy. It’s definitely not 2023 flagship-class quality, but it’s surprisingly good given the age of the device. This surprising usability is a testament to Google’s updates to the device’s image processing.
Next up, I wanted to test some different strengths of the Pixel’s camera. The dynamic range test image of the supermarket car park is superb, capturing a lot of highlights in the sunny sky and shadows from the trolley-port. All while still managing to recreate accurate and true-to-life colors. I was fully expecting the trolley-port to be a crushed, shadowy mess, but there is still a lot of visible detail in that area. I then took a selfie in front of a bright softbox light to help evaluate the skin-tones and highlight roll-off where the shadows start to creep in on the right of the image. The Pixel really surprised me here. The soft roll-off is clean without any harsh contrast, and the representation of my complexion is pretty much spot on, too.
In the final tests, I looked at color-accuracy and natural bokeh. To get a shallow depth-of-field, and therefore a blurry background, a large image sensor is going to achieve batter results. This is why the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s bokeh is so satisfying without the need for portrait mode. The Pixel’s image sensor is 1/2.3-inches vs the S20 Ultra‘s 1/1.33-inches, making the Pixel’s heaps smaller and much harder to be able to capture that silky-smooth natural bokeh and achieve subject-separation.
The Pixel proves how long a phone can last with the proper support.
This software-focus is something that we should expect Google to lean into more heavily going forward. Based on the success that the Pixel 3a saw, all eyes are on Google to make the Pixel 4a a true successor in every right. And if the Pixel 5 is really going to be a flagship phone with a mid-range SoC, as has been rumored, we should remember that even a phone with 2023 hardware can impress when the software is this good.

The Egyptian-born scientist brought a worldview to Commonwealth Avenue, praising university students in his home country for their “impeccable organization” during the recent revolution that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak and for using science—not violence—as a means of bringing democracy to Egypt.
“In my generation, we would probably have used stones, sticks, and guns in order to rise up,” Zewail said. “In your generation, they used Facebook, Twitter, and SMS. Without the discovery of the chip, wireless technology, and the internet, this Egyptian revolution may never have succeeded in a peaceful and civilized transformation.”
Zewail, who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree at BU’s 138th Commencement later on Sunday, received a standing ovation from the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd in Marsh Chapel. President Robert A. Brown, University Provost Jean Morrison, and Marsh Chapel Dean Robert Hill also addressed the graduates, who stood out like bright scarlet dots among dozens of friends, family, and BU faculty and staff.
Scott Allen Jarrett (CFA’99,’08), director of music at Marsh Chapel, led the choir and musicians in a stunning performance, awing listeners with the African American spiritual “My God Is a Rock” and a thundering rendition of “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.”
Zewail’s words were as powerful as the music was moving. He told the congregation that after receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999, people began asking him the secret to his success—a question, he joked, that “people never asked me before.”
“I believe it was the passion for science that supplied the energy and it was the optimism that made the almost impossible possible,” said Zewail, whose research focuses on femtoscience, which allows for the study of atomic motion over split second spans of time.
“Success comes to the prepared mind,” he told the assembled crowd. “Success is not like rain that falls from the sky equally on every person. Success is what you reap when what you sow is passion and optimism.”
Zewail is the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemistry and a professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he is the director of the Moore Foundation’s Center for Physical Biology. In 2009, Obama appointed him to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and also named him the first United States Science Envoy to the Middle East.
The renowned scientist earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Alexandria in Egypt, before coming to the United States in 1969 on what he described as “a voyage, a quest for knowledge” in the form of a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, before joining the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1976.
In his parting words, Zewail sought to inspire the soon-to-be graduates. “The country needs you to build its future,” he said, “and the world will be a better place when knowledge replaces ignorance.”
