There’s been a bit of a rebirth in the all-in-one desktop category lately and from the looks of it, Dell is onto something with its Studio One 19. This new machine — starting at $699 — melds together a wish-list of what I’d hoped I’d see in my Kitchen of TomorrowTM. It’s just a shame that Japan retailers get to play with the Studio One 19 this week while it isn’t slated to appear stateside until “sometime this spring.” That’s not stopping me from sharing my two cents on this computing conversation piece right now since I just came out of a product demo:
Dell’s Studio One 19 attempts to take what HP’s big, black obelisk of sleek touchiness (the HP TouchSmart IQ506) got right — and wrong — and hit a slightly different demographic: Non-nerds. At least that’s the pitch Dell spokespeople give.
First thing you can’t help but notice is this system’s compact form: It measures 21.9 by 15.5 by 3.2 inches. Inside, the 18.5-inch display floats over an interchangeable back panel supported on a stand (I’ll get back to that in a second). You’ve got a fairly sharp 1366 by 768-pixel (16:9 aspect ratio) image on said screen–enough that you’ll be able to see colors pop on screen. Of course, the glossy coating will also bounce back some light in your face — it did when I tried taking a couple shots during the demo.
The rest of the machine is a series of interesting choices. Inside, resides a 7200 rpm SATA drive — 160GB to 750GB — and up to 4GB of RAM (both user upgradable, say spokespeople). It can also house anywhere from between a humble Intel Celeron 450 processor (2.2GHz) up to a Core 2 Quad Q8200 (2.33GHz). The default configuration comes with a single slot-loading 16X DVD burner. Want to get a little more multimedia oompf? Upgrade to a Blu-ray — it’ll cost about $200 more according to initial estimates. The default config also has nVidia’s MCP7a chipset, so you’ll get decent graphics options–the GeForce 9200 or 9400.
A couple other quick thoughts: Would it kill someone to make a machine like this with a freaking FireWire or eSATA port? I understand a need to cut a couple corners but a high-speed data connection like eSATA for external hard drives would be helpful. As it stands, the machine is fairly Spartan. Besides the optical drive slot, you get six USB 2.0 ports, 2.1 audio out, 10/100 LAN support, a 7-in-1 card reader, and not much else.
Don’t let that $699 starting price fool you. The machine you really want to lay hands on will cost you more. Want the cool wireless keyboard / mouse combo? How about a Blu-ray drive? That touch screen? Expect to spend at least $799 and go from there. Before you know it, the price tag gets up into the range of the IQ506. It just has a smaller screen and looks a little more consumer-friendly. And, really, that’s the point, I suppose. I’m waiting for more playtime with a proper review unit before passing final judgment.

Dell have announced a budget ultraportable notebook, the Studio 14z series, with prices starting from $649. Based around a range of Intel Core 2 Duo processors, the Studio 14z has a 14-inch 16:9 HD display, NVIDIA 9400m graphics and up to 5GB of RAM.
To keep things slim there’s no integrated optical drive, meaning the 14z measures between 0.79 and 1.2 inches thick. A 1.3-megapixel webcam and dual digital microphones are standard, together with facial-recognition security software. The Dell Studio 14z is available now.

Dell Xps 13 Kaby Lake Review: Yes, This Is The Best One So Far
We can all agree that Dell’s latest XPS 13 with Kaby Lake is an incremental update. But when your ultrabook is the one that’s being copied by everyone, that’s not such a bad thing, is it?

Three generations of InfinityEdge PCs. Dell knows it has something good, so it hasn’t changed its XPS 13 much for three generations.
The real changes are inside, where you’ll find Intel’s latest 7th-gen Kaby Lake CPU, basically a souped-up Skylake chip that’s roughly 10 percent faster. On the GPU side, you’ll see a similar boost.
Dell also increases the battery capacity by using slightly denser cells. That takes your fuel tank from about 57.5 watt hours to 59 watt hours.

The trackpad on the latest XPS 13 has less friction than more rubbery-feeling predecessors. I think the keyboard is still a tad small, though.
Although Dell says the trackpad hasn’t changed, to my fingers, the trackpad definitely feels less rubbery than before, and more similar to the Microsoft Surface Book’s silky-smooth glass version. I have no complaints.
The keyboard, unfortunately, hasn’t changed either. It’s not a bad keyboard, and I’ve used an older XPS 13 for several months. Still, I’d still be remiss if I didn’t mention that the keys just feel a tad bit small versus the competition. And no, I don’t mean Apple’s MacBook, I mean HP’s Spectre x360, which gives us a roomy keyboard.
Ports don’t change either: You still get a Thunderbolt 3 using a USB-C, as well as two USB 3.1 (10Gbps) Type A ports. There’s also a cowardly headphone jack and SD card reader too.

The newest XPS 13 (top) has the same ports as the previous iteration (middle) and let you charge via USB-C. The oldest XPS 13 (bottom) has a mini-DisplayPort.
What this really comes down to is Intel’s Kaby Lake so let’s get on to it. The review model here was equipped with an Intel Core i5-7200U, 8GB of LPDDR3/1866 in dual-channel mode, and a 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe drive. The screen is a 1920×1080 IPS non-touch panel with a light anti-reflective coating. Dell offers touch and 4K display options, but they cost more money and eat the battery, too.
Cinebench R15 PerformanceKaby Lake is based on the same 14nm process as Broadwell and Skylake—Intel’s backup plan when it couldn’t move to a smaller process as planned. Intel took its experience making Broadwell and Skylake and squeezed higher clock speeds out of the chip while using nearly the same amount of power.
The 7th-gen Kaby Lake in the latest XPS 13 comes out on top in the Cinebench R15 CPU test.
Handbrake performanceCinebench R15 takes just a few minutes to run. To see how laptops fare under a longer load, we use the free and popular encoder Handbrake to convert a 30GB high-resolution MKV video file using the Android Tablet preset. The entire process can take up to two hours on a dual-core Core i5 or Core i7 CPU.
On a desktop or larger laptop, cooling generally is not an issue. On tiny little laptops, this test can function as a performance test or an indicator of how well the laptop handles heat. Some laptop makers will opt to reduce performance to keep the laptop cooler and the fan noise down. Dell, generally, favors performance. That pattern doesn’t change here, as the Kaby Lake-based XPS 13 comes in well ahead of its siblings and again bests even the pricier Core i7 / Iris-based XPS 13.
The Kaby Lake outpaces even the Core i7-based Skylake chip with its fancy-pants Iris graphics and eDRAM.
3DMark Cloud Gate performanceFor graphics performance, I tested all four units using Futuremark’s synthetic gaming test, 3DMark Cloud Gate. It’s a test made lower-ambition laptops that lack discrete graphics—all models tested here rely on the graphics integrated directly into their Intel CPUs.
Cloud Gate favors the XPS 13 with 6th-gen Core i7 when only graphics is factored in.
Battery lifeI expected to get pretty good run time out of the slightly larger battery on this laptop, and I did. Our test loops a 4K video file in airplane mode with sound enabled (using ear buds). The screen is set to a fairly bright 250 to 260 nits, which is a good setting for watching a movie in a typical office or home.
While you might look at the results and decide Kaby Lake gives you more battery life over Skylake, there are differences between the two Core i5 XPS 13 units in SSD power consumption. The Lite-On SSD in the Kaby Lake XPS 13 is far more power-efficient than the one in the Skylake XPS 13. SSD performance may also play into the battery life of the 5th-gen Broadwell: That particular generation of XPS 13 used an M.2 SATA drive rather than the more power-hungry NVMe PCIe drives of the newer models.
The Kaby Lake XPS 13 has pretty great battery life while playing video.
One more thingPerhaps the most significant improvement with the 7th-gen Kaby Lake chip is the video engine. Intel basically added hardware support for 10-bit HEVC video, and boatload of other encoding and decoding features. Of course, 10-bit HEVC and other support doesn’t yet matter for most of us, but it’s something keep in mind. The practical upshot is you can actually play video encoded using 10-bit color on the Kaby Lake, while a Skylake or a Broadwell machine would just spit furballs. Here’s the proof in pictures: Playing a 1080p file encoded with 10-bit color saw the Kaby Lake XPS13 basically at idle.

The 7th gen Kaby Lake CPU in the latest Dell XPS 13 can play 10-bit color video files without breaking a sweat.
Without the hardware support in the GPU, that means the CPU is doing all the work. Decoding that Tears of Steel video file with 10-bit color depth isn’t easy, either. It took battery life on the Skylake-based XPS 13 to a dismal three hours. That higher clock speed means more power consumption, which means less battery life. The Kaby Lake XPS 13, though, took a minimal hit and could loop the video for 10.5 hours.

Skylake can’t handle video files encoded at 10-bit color depth without cranking up the CPU and even then will drop a massive amount of frames.
Should you upgrade?If you’re already aboard the Dell XPS 13 train, you don’t need to be told how great of a laptop it is. The question you’re probably asking is whether you should upgrade. I’d say it depends.
When you step back one more generation to a 5th-gen Broadwell-based XPS 13, then it starts to get interesting. You get roughly a 20-percent or more performance increase, a much faster NVMe drive and Thunderbolt 3, plus the ability to do USB-C charging. Coming from that generation of XPS 13, it’s a very decent upgrade, especially if you can sell your older unit to a friend or family member.
ConclusionIn the end, you can look at Dell’s latest XPS 13 as a “if nothing’s broken, don’t fix it” moment. It’s arguably one of the best if not the best laptop available. You get that beautiful InfinityEdge display, a super-compact body, and oodles of performance.
Not that anyone should be resting on their laurels, because the competition isn’t going to sit still for much longer. For now though, it would be hard to beat the XPS 13.

How to Start Building a DashboardFor this Google Looker Studio tutorial, we’ll be working towards recreating the following dashboard:
This dashboard is a simplified version of the following dashboard which we’ll discuss in more detail later on.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a website because everything we’ll cover will apply to any kind of data you have.
To start, log in to your Gmail account and head to chúng tôi In Looker Studio, there are multiple ways to start building a dashboard.
The first method is to start with a template from the Template Gallery.
We’ll be creating a dashboard from scratch in this Google Looker Studio tutorial, so we’ll select Create → Report.
Alternatively, you could also select Blank Report with the + sign thumbnail from the list of templates in the Template Gallery.
From here, we’ll send our data to Looker Studio with the help of Connectors. You can pull data from 1000+ data sets with the use of over 730 connectors available (as of the time of this article).

In our window, we can easily see the list of connectors starting with the Google Connectors at the top, followed by the Partner Connectors.
Here you can connect to various other tools in Google’s platform, like Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Sheets, BigQuery, and more.

For this Google Looker Studio tutorial, our data is in Google Sheets, so we’ll use the Google Sheets connector.

Great! We have successfully added our data to Looker Studio.
From here, we’ll see a default table which is Looker Studio’s way of showing you that it has pulled data from your data source successfully.
Now, let’s explore the interface a bit.
Adding Charts to a DashboardWhen building a dashboard, we’ll utilize various visualization types that Looker Studio collectively calls charts.
Here, we have all the common types like Tables, Scorecards, Time series, Bar charts, Pie charts, Geo charts, and more.
Next, let’s change how our dashboard looks by opening the Theme and Layout pane.
Going to the Themes tab, we are presented with a list of themes that offer different default colors for your background, text, and charts.
For example, if we select the Constellation theme, you’ll see the background change to a dark gray.
For this Google Looker Studio tutorial, we’ll use the Edge theme.
Next, we’ll increase the size of our dashboard so that we have more space to play with our data.
Now, let’s look at how to build and modify a chart.
Start with creating a Table.
Next, pay attention to the two columns on the right side of the screen.
Let’s start with discussing the properties panel. Since we currently selected a table, you’ll see that we have the Chart as the title.
Our properties panel is usually divided further into the Setup and Style tabs. The setup tab is where to build the chart – what data is displayed, while the style tab is where we format the chart.
Next, we also have the Data panel.
The Data panel is where you can access data from your data source. It is organized into dimensions, metrics, and other types of data.
Dimensions are attributes of your data. Think of categories, colors, or anything that is in text form. You can easily distinguish different data types by looking at the icon next to them.
Looking at the browsers our visitors were using to get to our website, you’ll see that it has an icon that says ABC. This is how you know your data is a dimension.
On the other hand, metrics are the data that you can use for your calculations. These are usually the data that have numbers.
If we look at the revenue, you’ll see that metrics have a 123 icon.
Other data types include geolocation with a globe icon, dates with a calendar icon, and links with a chain icon.
In our dataset, examples of each are the Country, Date, and Landing page, respectively.
Next, let’s learn how we can modify the data in this table.
If we wanted to see the number of total users by city, we need to replace the session source/medium dimension and record count metric.
A helpful tip in finding the data you want to add to your chart, especially if you’re working with a large dataset, is by using the search bar at the top of the data panel.
To demonstrate, let’s search for the total users.
This opens a mini data panel where we can search for or select the data we want to display directly.
Great! Let’s delete this chart for now and move on to recreating the dashboard we showed earlier.
Adding Scorecards to a DashboardLooking at the reference dashboard for this Google Looker Studio tutorial, we have a banner on top with a group of scorecards.
Scorecards are like snapshots of your key performance indicators or KPIs. You usually use them when you want to highlight a specific metric.
To start, let’s create the banner.
Next, we’ll get to adding the Scorecards to our dashboard.
First, let’s replace the metric displayed with the Total users. You can use any of the methods we showed earlier.
Now, we need to change the format of our scorecard to fix this contrast issue.
Changes to what we want to be displayed are done in the setup tab, while changes to how they are displayed are done in the style tab.
Go to the Background and Border section in the Style tab and change the background color to Transparent.
Great! Our background is gone. However, we can’t see the numbers because both the banner and text color are dark.
To fix this, go to the Labels section and change the font color to white.
Great! Now, rather than rebuilding all these scorecards one by one, try this little trick.
Doing this allows you to retain the formatting we changed in the style tab, and you only need to change the metric displayed in the setup tab.
Alternatively, you can also utilize the copy-paste functionality using your keyboard.
Since we have 4 scorecards on our banner, let’s select the two scorecards we have so far by holding down the CTRL key, then copy and paste them using the keyboard shortcuts.
Let’s move on to the next section of our Google Looker Studio tutorial.
How to View the Number of Website VisitorsThe first section of our dashboard mainly has a scorecard showing the number of website visitors and a line graph showing the trends in the number of users per month.
The big number displayed is just another scorecard, but with a few more tweaks than what we made earlier.
Start another scorecard with the Total users metric.
Lastly, if you started with a new scorecard, set the background color to Transparent.
Next, let’s add our line chart. While we have a section for line charts in the list of available charts, we’ll be using a Time series chart since we’ll be looking at trends per month.
Stretch the chart a bit to cover a decent portion of our dashboard, then make the lines a bit heavier. Set the line weight to about 5, and change the series color to black.
Next, we also want to remove the grid lines and the background.
Go to the Grid section and change the grid color to Transparent.
For the background, try and test if you can remove it on your own. Don’t worry if you need to go back to the previous section of our Google Looker Studio tutorial! (Hint: Look at the section names.)
To complete this section, let’s put a section header by adding Text.
Add the text “How many users visited our website?” in all caps, then increase the font size to 20px, and bold the text.
You can reorder, resize, reformat, or reposition the charts that we have so far, but at this point, we can see that we have successfully recreated the first section of our reference dashboard.
Now, let’s move on to the second section.
Here, we have a bar chart showing the top 5 cities that bring the most visitors to our website, along with a geo chart highlighting the number of users per country.

Let’s start by inserting the Bar Chart.
Insert this bar chart at the bottom of our scorecard. Set the dimension to City and the metric to Total users.
Next, remove the background and gridlines, which we are confident that you can do at this point in our Google Looker Studio tutorial.
Next, we’ll reduce the number of bars shown in our chart because we are only interested in showing the top 5 cities.
To do this, go to the Bar chart section and change the number of bars to 5. Next, change the color in the Color bar section to black.
Great! Now, we could start building our geo chart from scratch, but we’ll show you another trick you can use.
Select the geo chart and watch Looker Studio’s magic in how it easily transforms your data.
Now, let’s change the color settings of our geo chart.
Set the maximum color value to black, and the minimum color value to pink to have some contrast.
Let’s recreate the last part of our dashboard.
How to See the Most Popular Content on a WebsiteThe last portion of our dashboard has a table that shows us the most popular content on our website.
To create this in our dashboard, let’s start with a table.
Next, put the Page path and screen class in the dimensions section, then the Total users, Views, Engaged sessions, and Revenue in the metrics section.
Adding Data ControlFinally, we only have two things left to do to fully recreate our Google Looker Studio tutorial reference dashboard.
If you had been paying close attention to the elements of our reference dashboard, then you’ve noticed that it has a date range control at the top of the banner.
A date range control is a type of data control that helps you to only display the data you want based on the date range you specify.
Essentially, a data control filters your data and a date range control filters them by date.
Notice the various changes this date range control made to our dashboard.
First, the scorecard showing the number of users displays a smaller value due to the narrower date range.
Next, the four scorecards on our banner have an additional line showing if there were improvements or dips in our KPIs.
Lastly, the line chart date range changed and another series is shown comparing the number of total users from the previous 93 days.
Insert the date range control at the top-right portion and let’s style it a bit.
Set the background color to transparent, change the border color to white, then set the border radius to 15.
Finally, change the font color to white to fix the contrast issue.
Now, the final thing to add is an image of our logo at the top-left corner of the dashboard.
After you select the logo and insert it into your dashboard, you’ll see that there is a contrast issue again. To change this, let’s set the background to transparent again.
Note that this only works if your image or logo already has a transparent background.

The April update for Xbox One (version 1804) is now rolling out to everyone delivering a new set of features and improvements, which probably won’t significantly change the way you play games, but it will definitely improve the overall experience.
