Suggested January 2024 Exploring Analytics & Ai In 2023: A Detailed Primer
It is often said that data is the most valuable asset a business can have; the oil of a digital era. But data itself, while interesting, often leaves out a variety of important details – creating a need for analytics. And how we complete these analytics has evolved – and will continue to do so; particularly with the rapid proliferation of AI tools and technologies.
What is analytics? [Separate article]
What are the benefits of analytics?Data analytics allows companies to institute data-driven decision making which allows companies to minimize bias and gut feel while making both important corporate decisions and making fast operational decisions. For example; with Data Analytics, a business can classify customers according to patterns found in data to understand their customers’ perspective.
Additionaly, a successful analytics program can lead to:
Increased productivity via instant access to the right data through better classification processes
Improved speed, accuracy, and efficiency throughout analytics and data management practices
Facilitating clear compliance with legal and similar requirements
Cost saving by finding the best ways to achieve a wide range of tasks
To better understand data, analytics, AI, and how they all go together, we will answer the following questions:
Why is analytics important now?The belief that data can serve as a guide is growing stronger in both business and government. Organizations want to act on the growing data sets they are gathering, which lead them to place analytics at the center of the decision-making process.

How did analytics evolve?Source: IIA
Analytics 0.1 Analytics 1.0 Analytics 2.0In the early 2000s, the volume of data generated from individuals exploded as the internet became a mainstream product. This is called the era of Big Data because of the amount of data provided from phones and social media platforms. Big Data technologies and tools enlarged the set of capabilities that data analytics can do. Some of these capabilities are processing data and leveraging with code in open-source software like Hadoop.
Analytics 3.0With further increase in data generated and increased expectation to make real-time decisions, decision making needs to be pushed to edge devices. Analytics 3.0 combines the information generated at the edge with internal data of the organization using the latest machine learning approaches to predict potential outcomes.
Shankar Meganatha, Oracle Enterprise Cloud Architect, has a simple explanation for Analytics 3.0:
Every device, shipment, and consumer leaves a trail referred to as data exhaust. It’s just not feasible to keep moving very large amounts of raw data to centralized data stores – it is too big, changing too fast, and hyper distributed. Analytics 3.0 is essentially a combination of traditional business intelligence, big data and Internet of Things (IoT) distributed throughout the network.
What are the trends shaping analytics today?Gartner’s hype cycle shared at the top of the article and our interviews highlighted these trends:
AIAI is helping analytics get automated, more accessible and more powerful. We have explored this in detail in our AI in analytics article.
Analytics EnablersNatural language user interfaces (NLUI): All employees need to be able to at least access analytics. These interfaces enable employees to write their queries in natural language and access results,
Application specific analyticsText analytics: Analyzing text requires the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP), a branch of AI. There are emerging specialized analytics tools for analyzing written communication.
What are the best practices for analytics?Based on analytics vendors and our own experience and interviews, these are emerging best practices:
High quality data collection is an important first stepMost organizations still throw away a significant share of their data or keep data with significant quality issues. With data issues, analytics can be an exercise of garbage in, garbage out.
To see the big picture in your data, it is good to use the most suitable visualization tools. Visualization is a great way to understand and present insights in the process of decision-making.
Identify your KPIs and regularly monitor them via dashboardsIdentifying and tracking KPIs is critical for any business. To achieve this, it is good to keep in mind the end goal of the collected data. With that answer, you can add relevant parameters to your reports or dashboards, and remove the redundant ones. Well-prepared reports and dashboards, which are free from irrelevant metrics, eases organizations’ understanding of the current situation and improvement areas.
Check your Analysis PeriodicallyResults of your analysis will change as your company and market conditions evolce. A decision your organization makes today may not be the most optimal decision tomorrow. That’s why periodical analytical checks of the insights can be a life-saving action.
What are the analytics pitfalls to avoid? We have heard about these analytics pitfalls as we spoke to practitioners:
Organizations that operate on executives’ gut feel rather than data. First step in setting up analytics in an organization should be to ensure that the whole company, from management to most junior employees, follows data-driven decision making.
Operating a small sample size of data, which is associated with low statistical power, prevents organizations from success. Make sure you have a large volume of data to get accurate insights.
Data may give you all the information you need, but analysts should be careful while translating it into insight. Confusing causation with correlation may lead to misleading conclusions, be hesitant to make conclusions and try to find out an answer to the question of why.
Some tools that can enable more powerful analytics include:

Exploring The Spiritual Through Art
Exploring the Spiritual Through Art BUAG brings together painting, photography, sculpture, new media
An image from Benny Merris’ An Other Another series, which merges landscapes with the human form, is one of the works featured in Elements, Rudiments, and Principles, on view at the Boston University Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery. Photo courtesy of the artist
December is for many a spiritual time of the year. With Hanukkah nearly over and Christmas just weeks away, it is a time for reflection. Elements, Rudiments, and Principles addresses the various ways that visual artists convey the spiritual. The new exhibition on view at the Boston University Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery is deeply personal and intimate.
The show includes work from 13 artists working in a variety of mediums: photography, painting, and sculpture. Some pieces more readily evoke the spiritual than others. Benny Merris’ photographs merge landscapes with the human form, suggesting the delicate balance between the human and natural world.
Xylor Jane’s colorful oil, pencil, and ink on wood canvases reveal her fascination with numbers. These bold works emphasize the order and rationality that numbers impose. And then there are Peter Coffin’s Aura Portraits, C-prints mounted on plexiglass, so ephemeral that they hint at the act of something being created—some gaseous substance taking shape. Hanna Sandin’s wonderful mixed media sculpture Untitled, made of everyday objects that the artist has reassembled to evoke something resembling a constellation, suggests a firmament where everything is in its place.
Perhaps the most overtly spiritual piece in the show is Sister Corita Kent’s Green Up, a serigraph made in 1966. Best known for her graphic Rainbow Swash, painted on a gas tank visible from Rt. I-93 in Dorchester, the serigraph is a series of words arranged backwards, asking: “When was the last time you saw a miracle?” Viewers cannot help but be startled by Kent’s painting. The question draws the viewer into an immediate dialogue with the work, and it’s difficult to walk away without attempting to answer the question.
Elements, Rudiments and Principles is the result of an ongoing conversation between BUAG director and chief curator Kate McNamara and Dana Frankfort, a College of Fine Arts assistant professor of visual arts. “We were both looking at and thinking about the parameters and structures that artists create to enable the creation of a material, a feeling, an idea,” McNamara says.
Viewers may be a bit hard-pressed to find the spiritual in Brian Belott’s playful representations of cats, Cat Diptych 1 and Cat Diptych 2, or in the partitions Heather Rowe uses in her architectural sculptures, like The Self, which in McNamara’s words “break up the process of looking through formal lines and perfected angles.” But, she notes, “the word spiritual is implied in both a literal and abstract application, and speaks to process as much as it does to subject matter.” So while Rowe’s sculptures may be simple in terms of the materials she uses, they “create incredible viewing mechanisms and play with the cinematic effects as the viewer engages” with them, McNamara says. And as for Belott’s cats, she urges visitors to take a closer look: “Belott’s cat paintings recall the careful, ritual, and ephemeral mandalas of Hindu and Buddhist practices.”
The arrangement of objects in this show has been carefully thought-out. The goal, says McNamara, was to “create a kind of spirit, a dialogue.” Viewers are meant to enjoy each piece not only on its own merits, but for the way it works with the others in the exhibition.
Elements, Rudiments, and Principles is on view at the Boston University Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery, 855 Commonwealth Ave., through December 20. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.; the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Exploring Data With Power View Multiples
Exploring Data with Power View Multiples
Multiples, also called Trellis Charts are a series of charts with identical X and Y axes. You can arrange Multiples side by side, to compare many different values easily at the same time.
You can have Line charts, Pie charts, Bar charts and Column charts as Multiples.
You can arrange the Multiples horizontally or vertically.
Line Charts as MultiplesYou might want to display the medal count by year for each Region. Firstly, you need to have the field Year. To get this field, you need to have a calculated column as follows −
Type =YEAR ([Edition]) in the formula bar and press Enter.
A new column with header CalculatedColumn1 is created with values corresponding to the Year values in Edition column.
Close the PowerPivot window. The Data Model gets updated. The new field – ∑ Year appears in the Power View Fields list.
Create a Table in Power View with fields NOC_CountryRegion, Count of Year and Medal Count, by dragging the fields.
Convert Table into a Line chart in Power View.
Remove the field NOC_CountryRegion. A Line chart appears with Medal Count by Year.
As you can observe, Year is in AXIS area and Medal Count is in ∑ VALUES area in Power View Fields list. In the Line chart, Year values are on X-axis and Medal count on Y-axis.
Now, you can create Multiples visualization with Line charts, as follows −
Drag the field NOC_CountryRegion to VERTICAL MULTIPLES area in the Power View Fields list.
You will get the Multiples Visualization with Line charts arranged as a grid, with each Line chart representing a country (NOC_CountryRegion).
Vertical MultiplesAs you are aware, you have placed the NOC_CountryRegion field in the VERTICAL MULTIPLES area. Hence, the visualization that you have got is the Vertical Multiples visualization. You can observe the following in the chart given above.
One Line chart per category that is placed in VERTICAL MULTIPLES area, in this case – the country.
The grid height and grid width that you have chosen determine the number of rows and number of columns for the Multiples.
A common x-axis for all the multiples.
A similar y-axis for each row of the multiples.
A vertical scroll bar on the right side that can be used to drag the rows of Line charts up and down, so as to make the other Line charts visible.
Horizontal MultiplesYou can have the Multiples Visualization with Horizontal Multiples also as follows −
Drag the field NOC_CountryRegion to VERTICAL MULTIPLES area.
Select the values for Grid Height and Grid Width in the Multiples group.
You will get the Horizontal Multiples visualization as follows −
You can observe the following in the above chart −
One Line chart per category that is placed in HORIZONTAL MULTIPLES area, in this case – the country.
The grid height that you have chosen determines the height of the Line charts, unlike the number of rows of Line charts as is the case in the VERTICAL MULTIPLES. In other words, there is a single row of Line charts with the height determined by the Grid Height that is chosen.
The grid width that you have chosen determines the number of columns of Line charts in the row.
A common x-axis for all the multiples.
A common y-axis for all the multiples.
A horizontal scroll bar at the bottom, below the x-axis, that can be used to drag the row of Line charts to the left and the right, so as to make the other Line charts visible.
Pie Charts as MultiplesIf you want to explore / visualize more than one category in Multiples, Pie charts is an option. Suppose you want to explore the medal count by medal type for each of the countries. Proceed as follows −
Select Pie from the dropdown under Other Chart.
Drag Medal to the area SLICES.
You will get the Horizontal Multiples visualization with Pie charts, as you have the field NOC_CountryRegion in the area HORIZONTAL MULTIPLES.
As you can observe the medal-count for each country is displayed as a Pie chart with the slices representing the medal types with the color as given in the Legend.
Suppose you want to highlight the count of gold medals for all the countries. You can do it in a single step as follows −
As you can observe, this gives a fast way of exploring and comparing the count of gold medals across the countries.
You might want to display more number of Pie charts in a visualization. You can do it by simply switching over to Vertical Multiples Visualization and choosing the right values for Grid Height and Grid Width for a proper display.
Bar Charts as MultiplesYou can choose Bar charts also for Multiples visualization.
Switch over to Stacked Bar visualization.
Adjust the Grid Height and Grid Width to get a proper display of the Bar charts.
With Grid Height of 6 and Grid Width of 2, you will get the following −
You can have Clustered Bar charts also for this visualization.
Column Charts as MultiplesYou can choose Column charts also for Multiples visualization.
Switch over to Stacked Column visualization.
Adjust the Grid Height and Grid Width to get a proper display of the Column charts.
With Grid Height of 2 and Grid Width of 6, you will get the following −
You can have Clustered Column charts also for this visualization.
Wrap-upThe fields you choose depend on what you want to explore, analyze and present. For example, in all the visualizations above, we have chosen Medal for Slices that helped to analyze medal count by medal type. You might want to explore, analyze and present the data gender-wise. In such a case, choose the field Gender for Slices.
Once again, the visualization that is suitable also depends on the data you are displaying. If you are not sure about the suitability, you can just play around to choose the right one as switching across the visualizations is quick and simple in Power View. Moreover, you can also do it in the presentation view, in order to answer any queries that can arise during a presentation.

Tracking Campaigns In Google Analytics
A how-to guide for campaign reporting with examples
One of the most important (but often overlooked) aspects of digital marketing is setting up your analytics properly. It’s a little bit technical but easy to do once you understand a few simple steps and see why it’s so important.
Being able to track where your visitors are coming from is a valuable opportunity to improve your engagement and your ROI during the campaign. Additionally, when you benchmark your campaign performance you will be able to improve your campaigns in the future, and budget more effectively. It’s worth investing a little time in analytics!
In this post, we’ll show you how to use Google Analytics to track visits to your website or landing page. This is the critical first step in being able to understand how your campaign is performing.
Why track your marketing campaigns?Marketers at the top of their game always want more data. When you know where your visitors are coming from and how each traffic source is converting on your site, you can make on-the-fly optimizations to your campaign and achieve better overall results.
With this campaign tracking data in hand, you’ll be able to benchmark against it when designing and budgeting for future campaigns, making your future campaigns even better. This is one form of data benchmarking, and it’s a powerful tool for any marketer.

How to track your campaigns? We’re using Google Analytics here as it’s so popular, but other analytics tools will have similar features.
When a visitor lands on your website, Google Analytics records that pageview along with the source and medium that the visitor originated from. The “source” is the domain that the visitor came from, and the “medium” is a classification for different kinds of traffic. There is also a “campaign” parameter that can be used to further segment your traffic.
Many tools like MailChimp, Hootsuite, Oktopost and Hubspot have features that let you create tracking URLs, but anyone can use Google’s own Tracking URL Builder. You can automatically apply tracking parameters to all Adwords traffic by enabling Auto-tagging in Adwords (read instructions about how it works.).
source / medium = newsletter / email
Using Tracking URLs for the campaign promotion example above, we’d get this:
So, for each channel that you are promoting through, you should be using a unique tracking URL. This will automatically allow you to report on each channel, as well as reporting on each source, medium or campaign as an aggregate.
Important tips for measurement
1. Plan and organize your parameters
Google Analytics simply records whatever it’s told, so organize your parameters ahead of time. It’s best to use a standard set of parameters company-wide. If your company uses a different set of parameters each time an email goes out, you won’t be able to easily report on things like overall traffic from email monthly or year-over-year. Analytics is case-sensitive too, so “Email”, “email”, “e-mail” and “E-mail” will report as four separate mediums.
2. Keep it simple
It may be tempting to create unique parameters for all of the variables for each source, but this is not necessary, nor is it ideal. Each channel only needs its own unique combination of parameters in order to be reported on separately.
For example:
These parameters will allow for reporting on all paid traffic, or all email traffic, or all traffic from the whole “summer” campaign as well as reporting on each channel separately by using combinations of the above in a segment or filter.

Ethereum V/S Ethereum Classic : Exploring The Difference
Ethereum and Ethereum classic are two terms that are doing rounds like never before. All this has led to a confusion among the investors as to whether they both are one and the same or is there anything that differentiates the two. Well, to get things straight – Ethereum and Ethereum classic are two different terms altogether. Though they are similar to a convincing extent, they still are different. One cannot deny the fact that there there was a time when only one Ethereum ecosystem existed. However, with major significant events unfolding in the cryptocurrency history, we are now left with two different versions of the blockchain network.
What is interesting enough to catch everyone’s attention is the manner in which Ethereum classic came into existence. Surprisingly, Ethereum Classic was born out of a contentious 2023 debate after a malicious hacker stole $60 million worth of ether. If you are here to know what exactly is the difference between Ethereum and Ethereum classic or the reason why is there a lot of buzz with regards to Ethereum classic, then you are at the right place. Keep reading to learn more! Ethereum classic is a result of the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) hack. The DAO was a project launched on the Ethereum blockchain in 2023 and was operated liked a venture-capital fund for the cryptocurrency space. Talking about DAO, it is that investors’ funds which could be pooled together with Ethereum-based DAO tokens. Post this, what people can do is submit and pitch their ideas to the Ethereum community. On the proposal’s approval, the DAO automatically transfers Ether to the smart contract that represents the proposal. A flaw in the blockchain code made it easier for the attackers to withdraw $50 million. It was later concluded that the Ethereum blockchain has to be altered to revert the attack and get the funds back. As far as Ethereum is concerned, its blockchain allows decentralized apps to be built on top of the blockchain through self-executing contracts–also known as smart contracts. No wonder Ethereum Classic offers smart contracts as with the Ethereum network. However, what is worth a mention is the fact that it has struggled to gain the same popularity as Ethereum. Though, today, the picture seems to have improved, there are certainly a few things missing which have hindered its long-term growth. Out of these, a few of them are vision, support and the vast developer support that the standard Ethereum enjoys. Also, how can one go about without talking about the series of attacks on this network. All this has resulted in the investors losing confidence in it. On the contrary, Ethereum as an investment has always been one among the favourites of the investors. Even if there is a slight dip in the price of this cryptocurrency, it’s ability to bounce back to normal and surge higher has been one of the biggest reasons as to why the number of investors in Ethereum has always seen an upward trend. On the brighter side, considering the potential that Ethereum classic has, a lot of investors are already inclined towards it. What can be a driving force behind increasing investors in Ethereum classic is adopting certain measures like that of scaling the transaction limit in order to eliminate the threat of future attacks.
