GameStop PS5 restock incoming: What to know
Those trying to get a PlayStation 5 will have another chance this week. GameStop has announced that it will soon be restocking the PlayStation 5, but like the last few restocks at this retailer, buying one will require more than simply refreshing a website and hoping to get lucky. Indeed, this is another in-store restock, with many locations getting fresh PS5 shipments this week.
Specifically, this week’s restock will be happening tomorrow, January 14th. Many GameStops around the country will be getting PS5 consoles to sell in-store, and you can find the closest one to you by heading over to GameStop’s PS5 store restock locator. Interestingly, several states in the central US won’t be restocked tomorrow, so pour one out for our friends in states like Wyoming, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas.
GameStop has held these in-store PS5 sales events several times in the past, and each time, the company has required that prospective buyers be PowerUp Rewards Pro members. Unfortunately, things are no different this time around, as GameStop says that PS5s will only be available to PowerUp Pro members once again. While that membership only costs $14.99 per year, it’s still an extra cost and a roadblock for those who aren’t currently subscribed.

While there’s no confirmation of this on GameStop’s store tracker, expect to buy more than just a PlayStation 5, too. Since these new consoles launched, GameStop has mainly offered them in bundles with games, accessories, and GameStop gift cards. It’s very likely that it will sell this new batch of consoles in a similar fashion, so expect to spend more than $400 (in the case of the Digital Edition PS5) or $500 (in the case of the disc-based console).
The good news is that GameStop’s bundles often have good games and useful accessories, such as an extra DualSense controller. GameStop’s bundles are usually priced fairly considering what you get with them, as they’re used to dissuade scalpers from snatching up available stock only to relist those consoles online at a higher price.
As the store restock locator indicates, you’ll have to buy your PS5 in person, as well. While many retailers have opted to sell consoles online, particularly during the early stages of the pandemic, these consoles won’t be available through GameStop’s website. That can be both a good and bad thing because even though it means you have to go out to a store for a chance to buy one, it also potentially means you’ll have less competition for a console – at least relative to how much competition you’d have online.
Even then, you should expect these PS5s to sell out quickly tomorrow. GameStop says that it will only have limited quantities available, and given that demand for the PlayStation 5 is still high, we’re expecting many of these stores to sell out quickly after opening tomorrow. If you’re planning on trying your luck at snagging one of these in-store PS5s tomorrow, good luck to you, because competition will probably still be fierce.

Apple Car: What We Know, What We Don’T Know
Despite years of speculation about an Apple Car, we still have little hard information about Apple’s plans.
When did the rumors begin? The first reports date back to early 2023, when a camera-festooned car was shown to be leased to Apple. While some believed this was for Apple Maps, others suggested it looked more like a test-bed for a self-driving car. Shortly afterwards, Apple was found to be poaching Tesla engineers., and we uncovered a significant number of senior automotive hires.
What is Apple up to?This is the $64,000 question. We know for sure that Apple is very actively exploring some kind of move into the automotive sector, but it’s still not 100% clear that the company plans to go as far as launching a car, which consumers will be able to buy.
Apple has said only that the area is of interest to the company.
We’ve seen three main possibilities suggested:
Some kind of car technology, but not a carThe first suggestion is that Apple wants to create some kind of car tech, but not go as far as actually making a car. Some believe Apple’s primary interest is in the in-car experience as the world transitions to self-driving cars – a kind of CarPlay on steroids, if you will. Others believe there is enough evidence that Apple is working on self-driving technology, but that it will license this to other companies, rather than make its own car.
Ride-sharing carsThe second possibility is that Apple plans to make cars, but not for retail sale. One obvious market for autonomous cars is ride sharing, so it’s possible that Apple plans to make a self-driving car for a ride-sharing service, but we wouldn’t be able to buy one.
A car for retail saleThe third option, of course, is a full-on car that consumers can lease or buy outright. It’s this possibility which has understandably lead to the greatest amount of debate and excitement.
Who would make it?Assuming Apple does plan to actually make a car, it would partner with a manufacturing company to actually produce the vehicles. Here there are two possible routes the company could take.
Partner with an established brandApple has been reported to have discussed a possible partnership with a wide range of established carmakers. These include Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, BMW, and Canoo.
The Hyundai/Kia idea was once presented as if it were almost a done deal, before later being dismissed – though there remains some minor partnership talk.
The big stumbling block here appears to be branding. Existing car brands would be reluctant to be relegated to the role of a contract manufacturer, where Apple makes all the decisions and the car has only Apple branding.
Use a contract manufacturerThe other, perhaps more likely, possibility is that Apple commissions a contract manufacturer to build the cars, just as it uses companies like Foxconn and Pegatron to make iPhones and other Apple products.
Foxconn is known to be working on electric car production, but likely working more at the lower end of the market. The company did buy a US EV factory, but almost certainly not for Apple cars. Magna is one of the best-known contract manufacturers able to build models for premium brands, and so appears a likely contender.
What have existing car makers said?Unsurprisingly, almost all are claiming not to be worried. For example, BMW’s CFO says he “sleeps peacefully” while VW says the company isn’t afraid. Toyota thinks Apple doesn’t understand that you have to be ready to provide 40 years of after-sales support for a car, where Apple tends to discontinue support five to seven years after it ceases to sell a particular model.
In reality, of course, any premium brand car maker has to be sweating right now. Tesla is the only car company to openly admit that Apple will pose extremely tough competition.
When would an Apple Car be launched? This too is one of the Big Questions. In 2023, some suggested an Apple Car might go on sale as early as 2023, which of course didn’t happen. A variety of other dates have been suggested, from 2024 through 2026 to 2028 or beyond.
With no deal apparently yet struck, and no leaks of anything specific, it is certainly clear that Apple is nowhere close to a launch anytime soon.

What A Week: Apple Silicon, Xbox, Ps5, Vaccine(!?), And More
Your tech news digest, by way of the DGiT Daily tech newsletter , for Monday, 9 November 2023.
Stop press : Pfizer is saying its coronavirus vaccine trial is 90% effective. Here’s more on that stunning Pfizer-COVID19 vaccine news just being announced (NY Times)
1. Apple’s biggest launch could start the biggest tech week since… 2007?
Here’s how this week looks, as what was once private at Apple, Microsoft, and Sony, finally comes out into the open:
November 10: Apple’s biggest keynote in years. Since the …iPad in 2010? Or even the iPhone in 2007? Huge milestone keynotes, but the shift to Apple Silicon should be more than just a new MacBook with better battery life and handy processor, the absolute ground floor of expectations.
With Apple having control over its timeline, production of processors, and chipset design to get the most out of its software, it’s going to be big. The real changes might come in the years to come, but this will be the marker in the ground.
Remember: We expect three new MacBooks, including a 13-inch MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro, and possibly a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Ask yourself now if Apple Silicon will change the PC industry towards Arm, as it seems like Apple is ditching x64 entirely compared to the world of PC makers. The major makers are of course Windows first with some Arm-based chipsets that are only just more than experiments — we’ve seen Microsoft with its Surface Pro X and Acer’s Spin 7 as just two.
Also on the Arm-front, November 10 is the annual MediaTek Summit, which is expected to see the Arm chipmaker talk about its next Dimensity CPU, and a processor specifically for ChromeOS. Not a lot more out there on this yet. (This is about 1/100th of the other news when we look back on the history, but it still matters this week.)
To finish the week, the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini will be available in stores and arriving beginning from November 13.
2. Report: Samsung beat Apple in the US market for the first time in three years in Q3 2023, with the deck stacked a little towards Samsung. Q4 should be interesting. (Android Authority).
3. I wrote up The Weekly Authority, a new fresh newsletter on Android Authority, tackling the week that was from 10,000ft, plus a deep dive or bigger story. This week: the 5nm chipset war of 2023, which is going to be great for smartphones, and you (Android Authority).
4. On that note: Why a Snapdragon 875 Lite makes perfect sense (Android Authority).
5. OnePlus 8 Pro revisited: The good and bad six months later (Android Authority).
6. OnePlus Buds Z review: Cheaper and better than the OnePlus Buds. Wait, cheaper and better? That never happens (Android Authority).
7. Sony launches Airpeak drone business to support ‘video creators’ (Engadget).
8. Apple suspends new (read: additional) business with key supplier Pegatron after discovering violations of labor rules related to a student worker program (Bloomberg).
9. Virgin hyperloop hits an important milestone: The first human passenger test (The Verge).
10. Cory Doctorow gives an incredible breakdown of HP’s ink-jet printer corporation evil. Oh, you know ink-jet printers are bad. You didn’t know quite how bad: like HP’s very recent ‘Free Ink for Life’ deal that turned, just on 12 months later, “…into a ‘Pay us $0.99 every month for the rest of your life or your printer stops working’ plan” (EFF.org)
11. The ‘most famous paradox in physics’ nears its end: Physicists have proved that information does escape a black hole, the very thing that black holes weren’t supposed to do. So, what does that mean? (Wired).
12. Going to the Sahara Desert to count trees sounds rough. Instead, deep learning techniques identified trees from NASA’s satellite imagery, to count 1.8 billion of them (WeForum).
13. This is absolutely not 6G: “China sends ‘world’s first 6G’ test satellite into orbit” (BBC). 6G will be a standard decided by 3GPP. Which they’ll do anywhere sometime in the next 5-10 years. So whatever this is from China, with high-frequency terahertz waves (not GHz, THz) isn’t what 6G will be. It’s interesting, but not 6G. Ok, cool.
14. In honor of Alex Trebek, the nicest man on television, what is your favorite Jeopardy! moment or memory? (r/askreddit).
What You Need To Know About Smart Tvs
Since the early 2010s, smart TVs have become a significant presence in the modern home entertainment marketplace. A hybrid of television and computing technologies, they serve as a central hub for entertainment and news from a wide range of sources: over-the-air broadcasts, cable, streamed video from the Internet, as well as game consoles, Blu-ray players and other devices. Though gadget-lovers appreciate the variety possible with smart TVs, old-school TV fans may prefer the simplicity of a basic television set.
AppearanceSmart TVs look like almost any modern traditional television set: a familiar rectangular screen on a stand, a forest of connector sockets on the backside, and a remote control. The real difference is in what you don’t see – the microprocessors, software, and other tech on the inside.
Technology Operating SystemWhen you turn a smart TV on, it “boots” like a computer into an custom operating system tailored to managing its various functions. The OS software coordinates the video sources, runs the apps, and provides on-screen menus you navigate with the remote.
AppsTraditional TV programming from cable, satellite or antenna is but one of many functions offered on a smart TV. They come with a host of apps, each tailored to a specific purpose. In addition to factory-installed apps, you can typically add hundreds of others. Streaming apps, such as YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu, provide content from these sources. There are also apps for games which run on the TV itself. Other apps deliver specialty content such as for sports leagues and a range of Interests. Utility apps let you “mirror” video and images from your smartphone, laptop or tablet device, or display a slideshow of pictures from a USB stick.
High DefinitionSmart TV features are typically found on higher-end models, so they come with High-Definition and 4/8K screens. Note that not all ultra high definition TVs have what it takes to be a smart TV. Some offer a super-sharp picture without the processor, apps or WiFi.
AdvantagesThe features found on smart TVs command a premium price compared to simpler models, so be prepared to spend money. Their flexibility and sophistication also means they’re complicated, with many features to learn and menus to navigate. Because of the remote’s limited ability to enter text, web browsing and other functions are more awkward than doing the same task on a tablet. Also, some smart TVs spy on their owner’s viewing habits to gather marketing data.
ConclusionSmart TVs are a significant evolution in home entertainment, offering many media options from a single convenient package. For those who are into the latest high-tech gadgets and who might already own set-top boxes, game consoles and other devices, a smart TV will help further expand their digital universe. On the other hand, others who want nothing more than to flip on a favorite channel would probably be happier with a simple television set.

Should You Invest in MAGACOIN?Despite its goal and objectives, in any case, MAGAcoin isn’t yet listed among famous and trusted platforms including that of CoinMarketCap, Binance, and others. How would you feel when I say there is a new crypto coin , which is a Donald Trump-themed cryptocurrency? Funny, isn’t it? Well, then let’s welcome MAGACOIN. A lot has been happening around in the crypto world since the launch of MAGACOIN. Let’s explore more about it.MAGACOIN was made with an end goal to apparently communicate strong support for the previous President, Donald Trump, in the wake of his loss in the November 2023 political race. The total number of coins made till now is an affirmation of the 75 million who decided in favor of Trump in the elections. MAGACOIN thus carries on its shoulder the super weight of a major expectation since it is on the side of the competitors related with the Make America Great Again applicants. The returns from the new cryptocurrency will be diverted towards funding their future campaigns and races. This coin is different from other best cryptocurrencies to buy as MAGACOIN won’t hold an ICO (Initial Coin Offering), rather it will be parting with 100 coins to each new registrant to construct a powerful MAGACOIN ecosystem that will work together to get access to the crypto exchanges and backing the MAGA development. According to its website, 10 Million MAGACOINS have been given to the MAGACOIN Victory Fund, a SuperPAC made to help MAGA candidates across the nation who will battle for individual rights, religious liberty, protecting the unborn, the 2nd amendment, freedom of speech, and the entire America First Agenda. As MAGACOIN is acknowledged by crypto exchanges and the value of the SuperPAC’s coin holdings grows, these coins will be exchanged for U.S. Money and independent expenditures will be made to bolster MAGA candidates. The more prominent the value of each MAGACOIN, the more resources the MAGACOIN Victory Fund will have to support and choose MAGA applicants from one side of the country to the other. Lately, the country has been met with a ton of “far-right” movements in recent months, and this incorporates that of the Freedom Phone, which has been made for “free speech.” These far-right movements have been confronting gigantic popularity among the general population yet are blended in terms of support. The coin is additionally supposed to be available for mining, the alternative cycle of getting raw cryptocurrency.Despite its goal and objectives, in any case, MAGAcoin isn’t yet listed among famous and trusted platforms including that of CoinMarketCap, Binance, and others. Further, according to RawStory’s report, despite the popularity and massive sign-ups of MAGACOIN, its users risk something and it is a data breach on their end. It was found that the MAGACOIN site uncovers user data including login credentials among others. This is something that should be a warning for users, particularly as they can be accessed or have their cash taken from them by hackers. MAGACOIN is a genuinely new blockchain on the lookout and users should take precautions in case they are thinking of buying it. Moreover, Trump has not recognized the cryptocurrency or pronounced any apparent support. Trump hasn’t been exceptionally hopeful about crypto overall. He has even said that bitcoin appears to be a scam. And remember his extensive rant in 2023 on Twitter about crypto. One reason for his aversion toward cryptocurrency is their volatile nature and conflicting value due to which he doesn’t by and large belief them to be actual money.
What You Need To Know About Usb Fingerprint Readers
Do you hate typing passwords each time you log in to a computer? If this describes you, it will be faster for you to use biometric login. And if your computer doesn’t come with one, you can use a USB fingerprint reader. This USB device is tiny, lightweight, and easy to carry. Being biometric, it offers an extra layer of security that ordinary passwords simply can’t.
To substantiate that, I can’t help but think of an interesting episode from Cobra Kai, the recent successor to The Karate Kid franchise. (The 30-year old rivalry between the two lead characters is exciting to watch.) In this scene, Robby, the truant son of Johnny Lawrence, steals a customer’s laptop. All he has to do is pose as a smug tech executive and ask for the password. After quietly walking away with the device, Robby’s gang quickly sells it on eBay while the gullible customer is relaxing at a Starbucks.
One has to wonder had this customer enabled fingerprint access on his laptop and knew how to remote wipe it, could it have at least protected him from data theft? Fortunately, it was just a television show, but tech repair scams like this are surprisingly common in the real world.
What Do USB Fingerprint Readers Do?USB fingerprint readers work with any USB port or docking station to unlock a computer. They are expected to work as plug-and-play devices, which are readily compatible with Windows 7/8/10 systems. Kensington VeriMark and Benss Fingerprint Reader are two highly-rated USB fingerprint readers that do not require external drivers.
A few other desirable features of these devices include:
360-degree detection: you should be able to log in from any finger angle
Support for ten fingerprint IDs: if you are working with Windows Hello or other similar systems, you should be able to register all ten fingers.
Compatible with Google, Facebook, Dropbox and Microsoft ID: with a good USB fingerprint device such as Kensington VeriMark, you can not only access your computer but also several online services. In fact, these devices can serve as “tokens” to help you get rid of phone verification on Google.
To set up a USB fingerprint reader on Windows 7/8/10, you need to set up Windows Hello.
Who Does Not Need USB Fingerprint Reader? If your computer came with a built-in fingerprint scanner, you do not need this gadget. You can check your device’s compatibility online for all known Windows 10 brands. You can simply set up the built-in scanner with Windows Hello.
Device Failing to Register? One of the rare problems with USB fingerprint devices is that sometimes they may fail to read the user properly. This is definitely true for me, as I think some people experience this problem more often than others do. With wet or greasy fingers, you are likely to fail authentication more often.
However, the well-known brands mentioned here are very responsive to finger touch. Windows Hello also allows you to authenticate all ten fingers just in case one of them fails.
