Giant squid again caught on camera after 7 year hunt
The mysterious giant squid has been caught on camera again, seven years after a US team first spotted the striking deep sea creature. The elusive squid, or Architeuthis, is believed to potentially grow to up to 43 feet in length, making it one of the largest living organisms. However it’s also proved incredibly difficult to film.
That’s because Architeuthis lives in deepwater conditions, which are notoriously less-than-hospitable for researchers to explore. The sighting released back in 2013 was the culmination of a total of 55 submarine dives by twin submersibles, a process which took more than 285 hours.
Now, the team has struck gold again, further evidence of the benefits of its innovative luring technique which could transform how the striking sea life is tracked in future. The group from the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) has developed a tool they dubbed The Medusa, a stealth camera system designed to be particularly unobtrusive. It’s based on the theory that animals like giant squid are frightened off by the bright lights on traditional submersibles, not to mention the loud noises they make.
The Medusa, however, is designed to drift. It’s tethered on a line potentially thousands of feet in length, and has no thrusters or other noise-generating mechanics. Rather than bright white lights, it uses far-red illumination, which the sea life can’t see but a low-light camera can.
Most important is the lure. Dubbed an electronic jellyfish, or e-jelly, it’s a ball containing blue lights that’s designed to mimic the distress show of a deep-sea jellyfish. They’re high on the list of preferred snacks for giant squid, and are believed to generate the bright light shows when attacked as a “scream” intended to summon even larger predators, in the hope that they might then in turn attack wherever is trying to eat them.
It’s the e-jelly which got the attention of this new giant squid example. In the video of the encounter, you can see it unfurling its lengthy tentacles to grab hold of what it thinks will be a meal, only to get confused and then rapidly swim away. The lingering question was whether it was, indeed, officially an Architeuthis.
The answer to that, after consulting with other experts, was yes. It’s not the biggest ever sighted, though at 10-12 feet in length it’s still a terrifying prospect. Almost as terrifying, in fact, as the lightning strike which hit the boat just 30 minutes after the squid sighting, and which for a few horrible minutes left the research team wondering if their footage had been wiped.
Next up will be more attempts to capture the giant squid on video, as ORCA, the Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration try to figure out just how many of the creates are out there and what their life might be like. Notably, this new sighting wasn’t in some distant quadrant of the ocean, but around 100 miles southeast of New Orleans.

A spell checker is a great utility to automatically identify and rectify spelling errors, and most of us employ it in some form or the other. But, several users reported that Google Chrome’s spell check is not working.
A spell checker will highlight all misspelled words by comparing them with the correct spellings listed in its database. Though if you want to go ahead with the spelling used, simply ignore the warning.
Several browsers, including Mozilla Firefox and Safari, offer built-in spell checkers while those that don’t generally have an extension for it. So no matter which browser you use, it wouldn’t be difficult to get your hands on spell-check.
But, in the guide, we will focus on spell check in Chrome, and go through the solutions in case it’s not working.
Quick Tip:
Too much trouble with Chrome errors? It’s possible to avoid it by simply changing your browser to a more stable one.
With Opera, for instance, you have integrated third-party apps and plenty of spelling add-ons you can install and use right now.
After installing this new-age browser, you’re secured from typos or grammar mistakes using smart spelling tools.

How do I turn on spell check in Google Chrome?Enabling spell check in Google Chrome is simple and it should start working right away after you turn on the toggle. If not, relaunch the browser once.
What can I do if Chrome’s spell check isn’t working? 1. Check the selected languageIn many cases, Chrome’s spell check was not working when the input language was different from the one configured for Spell check. So, verify that and make the necessary corrections.
2. Delete cache and cookiesExpert tip:
3. Remove conflicting extensionsIf Chrome’s spell check is not working ever since you installed an extension, it’s likely that the extension is conflicting with the feature.
Also, there’s a chance that two extensions are conflicting and affecting the performance of Chrome, in which case, you will have to identify and remove both.
4. Verify if websites or online platforms have a built-in spell checkerIn many cases, platforms or websites that you visit have a built-in spell checker, for instance, Outlook. As a result, many users reported that Chrome’s spell check is not working in Outlook.
Spell check feature on Outlook
So, make sure to disable the platform’s built-in spell checker via the settings. If you can’t find the exact steps, head to the FAQ section on their website.
6. Scan for malwareOftentimes, a system infected with malware will witness Chrome’s spell check not working in Windows 10 and the latest iteration. Running a malware scan will do the trick in this case. Also, you can use an effective third-party antivirus to run the scan.
7. Reset ChromeIf nothing else has worked, you are left with no option but to reset the Chrome settings. It will disable any extensions, restore the browser settings to their default state, and delete cookies. Once done, Chrome’s spell check would now start working.
How do I reset spell check in Chrome? To reset the spell check in Google Chrome, you would have to go with the Restore settings to their original defaults option, as discussed in the last method of the previous section. Chome does not offer a built-in way just to reset spell check.
But, things generally shouldn’t come down to resetting the browser and the other methods should, in all likelihood, eliminate the underlying cause.
There are all the ways you can fix things if Chrome’s spell check is not working on your computer, either on a particular website or all of them.
Also, if Chrome’s built-in spell check doesn’t work too well, try other effective online and offline grammar checkers for Windows 11/10.

The New Before And After Previews In Camera Raw – Photoshop Cc
In this tutorial, we’ll learn all about the new Before & After previews that Adobe recently added to Camera Raw in Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) which make it much easier to preview our work and compare it with the original version as we’re editing and retouching our images. I’ll be using Camera Raw 8.5 here, the latest version at the time I’m writing this. To access these new preview features, you’ll need to be running Photoshop CC, available with an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.
This tutorial isn’t meant to be a detailed explanation of how to edit images in Camera Raw. We’re going to keep things simple so we can focus specifically on the new preview options. Here’s an image I have open in Camera Raw. I’ve done nothing to the image yet other than giving it an initial crop:
The original image.
The new preview options (there’s four of them in total) are found in the bottom right corner below the image:
The four new preview options.
Here’s what Photoshop came up with. The image is already looking better:
The image after the auto correction.
Toggling The Preview For Individual PanelsThe image with the Basic panel’s preview turned off.
And now I’m back to seeing the image with my Basic panel settings applied:
The image with the Basic panel adjustments restored.
The Before And After ViewsThe left and right side-by-side view.
If you zoom in on either version of the image and scroll it around, the other version will zoom and scroll along with it, making it easy to compare the exact same area in both versions:
Both versions of the image will zoom and scroll together.
The left and right split view.
The top and bottom view.
The top and bottom split view.
Back to the original single view mode.
The Preview PreferencesWhen the menu appears, choose Preview Preferences at the bottom:
Choosing Preview Preferences.
Unchecked preview modes will no longer appear as you cycle through the views.
There’s also a few options here that control the appearance of certain visual elements when viewing the previews. As I cycled through the preview modes earlier, you may have noticed that a solid black line divided the Before & After images in the side-by-side views, yet there was no line dividing them in the two split views. That’s because in the Preview Preferences, the Divider in side-by-side views option is checked by default, while the Divider in split views option is unchecked. Personally, I don’t like the divider lines at all (not a big fan of clutter) so I would turn them both off, but that’s just me:
Use the first two options to turn the divider line between the Before & After views on or off.
The third and final option here controls whether the actual “Before” and “After” labels are visible:
The “Before” and “After” labels.
I like to keep them on so I leave the Pane labels option checked (as it is by default) but you can uncheck it to turn them off:
Use the Panel labels option to show or hide the words “Before” and “After”.
Swapping The Before And After ViewsThe Before and After versions have been swapped.
Copying The Current Settings To The Before VersionThe final new preview option in Camera Raw is, I think, the most useful and interesting of the bunch, and here’s why. As you continue making adjustments to your image, you may get to the point where you know the adjusted version looks better and there’s no longer any need to keep comparing it to the original unedited version. Instead, you may start thinking something along the lines of, “I really like how my adjusted version looks in color, but I wonder how it would look in black and white”.
This copies the current settings to the Before version, and now both the Before and After previews of my image look exactly the same:
The original version has been replaced with the current version in the Before preview.
I can now switch from the Basic panel to the HSL / Grayscale panel, select the Convert to Grayscale option, and drag the various color sliders to create my black and white version:
Creating a custom black and white version in the HSL / Grayscale panel.
The Before & After previews now make it easy to compare my black and white image with the full color version to see which one I like better:

Datacenters: What’s That Giant Sucking Sound?
Our ever-evolving digital lifestyle has changed the way we do many things, from online banking to researching school papers to finding a soul mate to buying airline tickets and homes.
The consequence of that is that energy consumption by datacenters in the U.S. has doubled over the past five years and that growth rate shows no signs of slowing down.
That’s part of the price of progress, both in terms of energy consumption and contributions to climate change, according to a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Congress.
In 2006 alone, U.S. datacenters consumed about 61 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity or roughly 1.5 percent of all U.S. electricity consumption. That much energy cost about $4.5 billion, according to the report, prosaically titled “Report to Congress on Server and Datacenter Energy Efficiency.” The report was assembled under the auspices of the EPA’s Energy Star program.
Of course, Google (Quote), Yahoo (Quote), Microsoft (Quote), and other large search vendors and free e-mail purveyors and their users are only partly to blame. Datacenters are required to run businesses as well as government.
But the problem is growing rapidly.
The estimated level of consumption in 2006 was “more than the electricity consumed by the nation’s color televisions and similar to the amount of electricity consumed by approximately 5.8 million average U.S. households,” the report states.
In fact, by 2011, electrical consumption by datacenters is projected to nearly double again to 100 billion kWh, costing $7.4 billion, and rising to about 2.5 percent of all U.S. consumption.
“As the U.S. economy increasingly shifts from paper-based to digital information management, datacenters have become a vital part of business, communication, academic, and governmental systems. Over the last five years the increase in use of these systems, and the power and cooling infrastructure that supports them, have doubled energy use, increased greenhouse gas emissions and raised concerns about power grid reliability,” the report continues.
And it’s not all just about powering racks of computers, but also about cooling them in order to remove excess heat.
“For every watt consumed on the [computing] side, you have to have a watt on the cooling side,” Andrew Fanara, team lead for product development in the Energy Star program, said on a conference call on Thursday.
Overall, while the report is not a “how-to” document, Fanara said, the best near-term medicine for the problem is for IT staffs and server manufacturers to work to lower electrical demands.
For instance, datacenters should consider sub-metering consumption on each IT equipment rack separately in order to better track usage, and implement more server consolidation. They should also pull the plug on unused or less efficient equipment. Manufacturers can help by using the most efficient and current technologies.
Organizations should also implement best practices for datacenter construction and management. And the industry should agree on common benchmarks for hardware.
“[Increasing] efficiency is the best resource we have available,” Fanara said.
According to the report, those practices and guidelines, if closely followed could yield power savings such that 2011 consumption could be reduced to pre-2006 levels, without limiting the power of the servers, which would run counter to the reasons for deploying a large datacenter, in the first place.
That will not be easy, the report’s authors admit.
The report and more information are available here.
