As many of us have started adjusting to remote working and distance learning, it’s up to us to present ourselves in a fun and colorful way every time we log in to a meeting. Google Meet offers a ton of features to interact with your friends and colleagues but can you add visual effects to your background to hide things you don’t want others to see? That’s what we’re here to talk about.

Can you change your background on Google Meet?

Technically, no! Google Meet doesn’t natively let you apply backgrounds to your video feed. That’s because there is no option present inside Google Meet that lets you modify the background from your camera feed besides blurring it.

In contrast to Google Meet, both Zoom and Microsoft Teams allow users to set custom backgrounds. Zoom has its virtual background option that lets users replace their actual background with other images available on its app or from their own library. Teams recently rolled out a ‘Background effects‘ feature that allows you to select images as new backgrounds.

Is there a way you can add background effects on Google Meet?

Yes. Although Google Meet doesn’t currently let you add custom backgrounds, natively, you can still do it using a Chrome extension – Visual Effects. You can install this extension like any other Google Chrome extension made for Google Meet that boosts the capabilities of the video conferencing service.

Similarly, since, Microsoft Edge is also built on the same Chromium platform, you can use the same extension on that browser, as well.

This way you can save yourself from awkward looks that your shabby-looking surrounding attracts and present yourself in a fresh way.

What is Google Meet Visual Effects?

Visual Effects for Google Meet is an extension that’s available for Google Chrome offering a bunch of effects that can be applied to your existing background. These include Blur, Pixelate, Rainbow, Virtual Green Screen, Freeze, Inverse, and more.

You have to keep in mind that the extension is only available for Meet on the web users who make video calls from Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. This won’t work on Google Meet apps on your iOS or Android or on any other non-Chromium browser.

How to use Visual Effects for Google Meet

If you wish to apply Visual Effects to your video background on Google Meet, you will have to first install the Visual Effects Chrome extension on your browser.

Adding the extension on Google Chrome or Edge

The browser will now install Visual Effects to your browser and after the extension is successfully installed, it will appear in the Chrome toolbar.

You can now go over to your meeting screen on Google Meet to start using the extension. All the visual effects can now be applied by going into the meeting screen, hovering over the left edge, and then selecting the effect that works best for you.

What we found: In our testing, we noticed that it takes a little longer for the ‘Join now’ and ‘Present’ buttons to appear inside the initial meeting window. We believe that’s due to the extension loading all the effects for use inside the meeting.

Add a virtual background

If blurring your surrounding isn’t what you want to do, the next best option for you is to completely change it with a custom image of your choice. The Visual Effects extension offers a ‘Green Screen’ option that when enabled can apply a selected image as your background.

You can do this by joining a meeting, hovering over the left edge, and then locating a ‘Green Screen’ option in the pop-up sidebar. Now don’t just try checking the box under it as you would be prompted that you have no image selected to apply as a green screen.

What we found: In our testing, the ‘Green Screen’ feature was a hit and miss. If you’re lucky, you will be able to replace your current background with the image that you chose.

Try other effects for your meetings

Besides the usual blur and virtual background effects, the Visual Effects extension also lets you add a bunch of other effects to you as well as your background. You can choose any one of the following options – Blur, Bubbles, Contrast, Cube, 3D Movie, Donation, Flip, Freeze, Inverse, Insane, Rainbow, Pixelate, Soft Focus, Text Display, Face filters.

Among the ones mentioned above, we suggest you try 3D Movie, Freeze, Rainbow, Pixelate,  Text Display, Soft Focus, Contrast, and Face Filters. We’ve tried a bunch of them ourselves and they’re fun to use and easy to apply.

What we found: Although most of these effects are a fun way to express yourself in meetings, there’s this one thing we don’t like about them. It’s the fact that when you apply any of these effects, the extension applies it to the whole camera-input instead of just your background. Unfortunately, even your face is now modified with the selected effect, giving you an excuse to not use them for long.

Can you expect Google Meet to roll out custom backgrounds?

Google is usually quite potent at keeping their ear to the ground and listen to valuable feedback. They have already rolled out the background blur feature to Meet and could very soon introduce the custom backgrounds we all crave. There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, but the update could very well be on the horizon.

How To Customize The Color, Background, And Theme Of Your Iphone Keyboard

Though there isn’t a simple option to change the default keyboard color on your iPhone, you can use a couple of easy workarounds to stop using the standard white iOS keyboard, and spice it up with colors, or even a background picture.

Option 1: Use iOS Dark Mode

You already know this if you’re a long-time iPhone or iPad user. But if you’re new to iOS, follow these steps to turn on Dark Mode, which will change the color of your keyboard from white to gray/black:

Open the Settings app.

Tap Display & Brightness.

Tap the box for Dark appearance.

Now, open Notes, Messages, or an app where you can type. You will notice that, along with the other elements, the keyboard has also switched its look from white to dark.

Option 2. Use a third-party keyboard

Since the stock Apple keyboard doesn’t offer any visual customization (apart from the one we mentioned above), you will have to rely on third-party keyboard apps, which will allow you to change the color, use a picture background, or set beautiful keyboard themes as the background.

The App Store has many keyboard apps, but SwiftKey and Gboard are the finest when it comes to having the best typing experience, along with excellent customizations. So, in this tutorial, we will show you how to change the keyboard background using these two apps. Let’s begin!

Start by downloading Microsoft SwiftKey or Google’s Gboard for free from the iPhone App Store.

Once the download completes, open the app and finish their basic setup. If you need help, we have explained the process in this tutorial.

Once that’s done, follow the steps below for SwiftKey or Gboard to use custom themes and backgrounds.


Open the SwiftKey app on your iPhone.

Tap Themes.

Pick one of the pre-made options from here. You will find keyboards of various colors, background patterns, color gradients, and more.

To use a picture from your Photos app as the keyboard background, tap the plus button (+) next to My Theme. After that, select an image, drag & zoom to adjust it. Finally, set the background brightness, key pop-up color, and key background. With all done, tap Save, and now this is your iPhone keyboard with the custom photo.


Go inside the Gboard app and tap Themes.

Choose from the default white and black options, or pick one under Landscape, Light gradient, or Dark gradient.

Tap the plus button (+) under the Custom heading to set your photo as the keyboard background. Now pick an image and customize it precisely as per your preference. Finally, tap Done.

What next?

Once you have set the desired keyboard inside the keyboard app, all that remains is to use it. For that, you have two options:

1) Open Notes, Messages, or any app where the keyboard comes up. Now, touch & hold the globe icon and pick SwiftKey or Gboard as your keyboard going forward.

You will see the customized colorful keyboard on the screen and type using it.

2) If you start loving SwiftKey or Gboard or are annoyed with the stock iOS keyboard coming up on the screen, you can follow the easy steps to set the desired third-party app as the default iPhone keyboard. After this, the un-customizable iOS keyboard won’t disturb you by appearing on the screen out of nowhere.

How to Download and Install Google Fonts on Windows 10

1. Go to the Google Fonts page.

2. Select the font family that is most appealing to your needs. You can preview each font style to make double-sure it is the right one. Roboto is quite a readable, generalist font, suited for a wide range of uses.

4. A File Explorer window will pop up, asking you where to save the font family. Remember the folder where you saved the downloaded font.

With downloading and extracting out of the way, it’s time to actually install the font family, so it becomes accessible in all of your applications, like MS Word, OneNote, Notepad, etc.

8. Select the “Personalization” category and “Fonts.”

9. Split the screen between File Explorer and Settings by dragging the windows to either the left or right edge of the screen. Select all the font files by pressing Ctrl + A and drag them into the “Add fonts” box. (Unselect the license file, as it is not a font type file.)

10. That’s it! To double-check if it is installed, just type the name of it in the search bar, and it will show up as an available font.

How To Use Google Meet In Google Classroom

One of the more powerful kickbacks from the pandemic was the abrupt and unexpected transition to working from home for millions of us. Solutions to various work-from-home-related conundrums began to emerge in a matter of days even because the level of urgency was so unprecedented. Initially, it seemed like Zoom would emerge as a resounding victor as organizations began using this video calling app as their daily driver for office meetings and team catch-ups. But when major, alarming security issues began cropping up it became clear that Zoom had bitten off way more than it could chew.

So when we began seeing Google Meet whenever we logged into our G-suite accounts, it was only a matter of time before Google integrated this secure, smart, and still-in-the-works video calling feature to all its other major holdings as well, Google Classroom being no exception.

What is Google Classroom?

Launched in 2014, Google Classroom is a hybrid learning tool designed for educational institutions to manage communication between teachers and students. With this service, teachers will be able to create assignments and distribute them to students of a class for teaching different topics and grade them based on students’ performance.

With the educational landscape recently evolving towards remote learning, Classroom is also integrated with Google Meet so that teachers can interact with students easily even from the confinements of their homes. Teachers can create quick meet links inside a class to teach a topic, conduct discussions, and host presentations from students without leaving Google Classroom.

What can teachers do with Google Meet in Classroom?

Of course, nothing Google does is basic. In fact, we are quite fond of them for the thoughtful little things that end up generating big benefits. For a teacher, Meet will undoubtedly be that small thing that manages to have a big impact. Let’s dive into some of these benefits first.

Dedicated meeting links for individual classes

When you’re hosting a class with Google Classroom, you can automatically generate meet links to interact with students in the class and this link will be unique for just this class. Meet links created inside Google Classroom can be used in a recurring fashion, meaning you can use them any number of times in the future as long as it isn’t outdated. 

Interact with a large number of students

With Google Meet integration, teachers can host classes to interact with around 100 students (with Education Fundamentals or Education Standard plans) or up to 500 students (with Workspace Education Plus plan). This can be big enough to accommodate multiple classes at the same time when explaining an in-depth topic or to make an announcement for a large number of students. 

Host live streams with people other than students

If you want to announce something to students and their parents or the school entirely, Workspace users can turn on live streaming to allow up to 100,000 people to watch a Google Meet call. During a live stream, only teachers and other hosts can interact and have their say while the others get to listen and watch.

Record live lessons for later

Meet comes with a Record option which really comes in handy when you’re taking live lessons. You can activate the record option at the beginning of the lesson and Meet will begin recording after taking appropriate permissions and everything. Once the lesson is over, you will receive a media file in the form of a Google Drive link which you can then choose to share with your class.

Gather attendance

Teachers on some Workspace Education plans can receive attendance reports for their students in Google Meet. The attendance report will be sent to a teacher’s email and will include information like student’s name (their number if they dialed into the meeting), email address, the time they were present in the class meeting, and more. 

Moderate students 

When there’s a disturbance during a meeting or if students are misbehaving in a class meeting, teachers can mute them, turn off their video, or remove them entirely from the call anytime they choose to. 

Accept student questions

There is a chatbox that comes as part of the Google Meet interface that really comes in handy to record the questions asked by students. You can even set your meet in presenter view to focus on each question given in the chat and choose to address them accordingly.

Conduct Q&As and polls

Some Workspace accounts also come with the ability to conduct Q&As and polls directly from the Meet screen that teachers can use to see student responses on a certain topic in real-time.

There is also a Present Now button that’s wedged in between the Turn on captions and the three-dot menu icon that you can use to project your screen to your class.

How to create a Google Meet link for your class

For everything else to happen, the link must be generated and ready in hand. The link is basically a unique code for your meeting that you will be able to share with those whom you want to invite to the Google Meet Conference call. So you need to understand how to generate this link. Don’t worry, it’s fairly easy.

For Teachers with Google Workspace accounts

For Teachers with personal Google accounts

For teachers who are not using Workspace accounts, Google Meet isn’t directly integrated inside Google Classroom. So, teachers using their personal Google accounts will have to use other means to create links for a Google Meet call for a class. If you’re a teacher using a non-Workspace account, here are all the ways you can create a meeting link for Google Meet. 

From Google Meet

You’ll now see the Google Meet link appear inside a box on the screen. You can copy this link by tapping on the Copy icon on the right-hand side of the link.

From Google Calendar

To create Google Meet links, open Google Calendar on your desktop’s web browser and sign in to the Google account that you use with Google Classroom.

When this section expands to show all your calendars, select the checkbox adjacent to your Google Classroom classes and uncheck all others. 

From Gmail

Now that you know how to create meeting links for Google Meet, you can now add them to your class inside Google Classroom and manage them from within the class by following the steps below. 

Note: Meet Link generated within Google Classroom is added directly to the class where it was created. So, you don’t need to add them manually inside a class, unless it’s hidden. You only need to add links to a meeting inside Google Classroom if you generated it from elsewhere like on Google Meet, Calendar, or Gmail. 

Make Meet link visible for students

Inside Class settings, scroll down and turn on the Visible to students toggle at the bottom of the Manage Meet Link section. 

The Meet Link should now appear on students’ accounts inside Google Classroom. 

Reset a Meet link for your class

If you’re having issues with a meet link you created inside Classroom, you can get a new one by resetting the current link inside the Class Settings. When you reset a meet link, it will no longer be associated with your classroom but it may still be accessible as an independent meeting. 

Remove a Meet link from a class

If you have meet links inside a classroom that have gone beyond their scope of usage, they will get outdated. We suggest you upgrade these meeting links in such scenarios as outdated links won’t work as you intended and may grant students host privileges. 

Add a Meet link to an announcement

For teachers who don’t use a Google Workspace account, Meet links aren’t generated automatically inside a classroom. Since we already explained how you can create links for Google Meet externally, you will also have to add them manually inside a class you teach. 

Fortunately, Classroom allows teachers to post announcements for an entire class through Class Streams. Teachers can thus, use this section to post a meeting link they created inside Google Meet, Calendar, or Gmail. 

To add a Meet Link to an announcement, make sure you’ve copied the Meet Link to your clipboard from where you create a meeting. 

Add a Meet link to a classwork

Just like posting meet links inside an announcement on a Class stream, you can also add external meet links to the classwork you give out to your students. Before you do that, you need to make sure that you have copied the Meet link onto your clipboard.

Now, choose either Assignment or Question depending on where you wish to paste the meet link. 

How to manage students inside Google Meet classes

If you’ve created a Google Meet call for your class with Google Classroom, your students will be able to join your class meeting. As a teacher, you can control how your students can access the class video meeting directly from the meeting screen.

Lock audio/video for a Google Meet call

While the Mute all feature works to temporarily pause every students’ microphone inside a meeting, students have the freedom to unmute themselves at any time. To avoid constant distractions, you can lock the participants’ audio for as long as you don’t want them to speak by enabling audio lock for all of them. Similarly, you can also prevent participants from turning on their video without your permission by enabling a video lock inside Google Meet. 

Turn on/off screen sharing

Disable chat messages

Teachers can also stop students from cluttering the class’ In-call messages section by turning off chat messages. When this feature is turned off, only teachers will be able to share notes with the class and students won’t be able to interact with each other in the same chat window. 

Remove participants

Reset the Google Meet link each time you want to meet with students, this way the older Meet links will not be used unsupervised. You can reset the link for each class from the General Settings of the class.

If internet speed is slow, turn off your camera to improve video meeting quality. If audio quality is poor, you can use a phone for audio, simply make sure that you have the Meet app on your phone as well.

To help students who are deaf or hard of hearing, you can turn on captions using the button of the same name that you will be able to locate easily during the call.

Create a New Room

Creating a new room in the Google Home app enables users to categorize and organize their smart devices based on their physical location or function. Open the Google Home app on your phone.

Locate and long-press any device listed in the app.

Tap Room.

Scroll down to the Create new section.

Select one of the pre-created room suggestions.

You can also scroll to the bottom and tap Add a custom room…

Enter the name of the room.

Of course, this isn’t something you’ll need to mess with unless you add an addition to your home. But more than likely, you’ll find yourself creating a new room in the Google Home app when you start adding devices and accessories to a room that didn’t already have any.

Move Devices to a Different Room

Moving a smart home device to a different room in the Google Home app allows users to update its location and ensure accurate device organization.

Open the Google Home app on your phone.

Locate and long-press any device listed in the app.

Tap the Settings icon in the top right corner.

Select a different location under the My rooms section.

Add Favorites For Quick Access

Another great feature of the updated Google Home app is the new “Favorites” tab. Plus, if you have any security cameras, you can add them to your Favorites page and take a quick glance at them.

The new Google Home app also makes it easier than ever to rearrange the layout of devices from the Favorites page. All you need to do is tap the Reorder button at the bottom of the Favorites screen. Then, drag and drop the devices in the order you want them to appear.

Check the “Linked To You” Section

You may have skipped over or forgotten to add a smart home device to a specific room. This doesn’t mean those accessories and devices aren’t available, but they aren’t currently assigned. Thankfully, there’s a dedicated section for these types of accessories, and here’s how you can move them to their appropriate rooms:

Open the Google Home app on your phone.

Tap the Devices tab in the bottom toolbar.

Scroll to the bottom until you reach the Linked to you section.

Long-press the device you want to move.

Tap the Settings button in the top right corner.

Tap Room.

Select a different location under the My rooms section.

Tap the Save button in the top right corner.

This is a nice way to keep your Google Home app clean and organized. Plus, you might find some older devices that are no longer in use but still appear in the app. The “Linked to you” section is quite convenient, so long as you remember to look for it if you can’t find a recently added device.

iTunes is available for Windows and macOS computers only. There’s no official iTunes app for Chromebooks. However, there’s a way to install and run iTunes (for Windows) in the Chrome operating system.

Installing iTunes on Chromebooks: What You Should Know

The 64-bit version of iTunes (for Windows) doesn’t work on Chromebooks. Likewise, not all versions of the 32-bit iTunes work properly in ChromeOS. We installed the latest 32-bit iTunes (v12.10.11) on our test device, but the app was unusable—it crashed every time. Our research revealed that other Chromebook users had the same experience.

iTunes v12.9.3 (32-bit) was more stable, but it’s no longer available for download on Apple’s website—most likely because it’s an outdated version.

However, you can download that specific iTunes version from third-party software download sites for Windows. Save the iTunes executable file in your Chromebook’s Linux folder. For this tutorial, we saved the setup file as iTunesSetup.exe.

Note: Although the iTunes version works, some features and functionalities might be unavailable. Also, the app version may malfunction because it’s retired and outdated.

Set Up Your Chromebook’s Linux Development Environment

2. Select Next to proceed.

3. Enter a preferred name in the “Username” dialog box or use the system-generated username. In addition, use the Recommended disk size and select Install to proceed.

ChromeOS will download the files needed to set up the Linux environment. The operation takes a couple of minutes, depending on your connection speed and Chromebook’s hardware configuration.

Install iTunes on Your Chromebook

Wine is a virtual emulator that allows you to run Windows apps in your Chromebook’s Linux development environment. Follow the steps below to set up Wine and use the emulator to install iTunes (for Windows) on your Chromebook.

Ensure your Chromebook has an internet connection. Otherwise, you may encounter several error messages while setting up iTunes.
