TransMedia, creator of the Glide cloud computing OS and suite of apps, will Wednesday announce the latest addition to its app set—Glide Engage, a micro-blogging tool with a lot of social media sharing functionality layered on.

Compared to the Twitter community, the Glide community is tiny. But Glide,TransMedia CEO Donald Leka tells me, now hosts just over a million users and is adding about 2,000 more every day. As with Twitter, as you begin posting messages, links, media, etc., some of those community members might find you “engaging” and then start following you. Of course you may begin to notice the same users posting stuff you like, and then begin following them. In short, using Engage feels a bit like using Twitter, but with a lot more control and functionality happenning in the background.

Engage also provides an impressive collaboration workspace, called Meeting, where you and your invitees can call up any type of file, view it, discuss it and make changes to it. During the demo today, Mr. Leka pulled up both a music and a video file, played them, then began both a text-based chat and a video/voice chat with me to discuss the media in real time.

As in the micro-blogging and discussion groups functions, you can set exacting permissions around who may do what with the files you share. Some users may only read the files, while others may be given permission to edit them, but only in a certain time frame, for instance.

The Austria of Cloud Computing

Glide’s OS- and device-agnostic approach really pays off in the new Engage app. For instance, if you share a QuickTime media file through Engage with a friend using a Windows Media mobile device, Engage automatically transcodes the QuickTime file into a Windows Media file that will display nicely on the mobile device. The reverse is true, too. Similarly, if you share a Microsoft Word doc with a Mac user via Engage, Engage will convert the file to an Open Office document that will work nicely on a Mac. It will also convert documents for use on an iPhone.

Syncing Up

Glide also provides a syncing app that allows you to make your files in the cloud a constant mirror image of your files on your home, work or mobile PC. For instance, if you modify one of your “Glide” documents using your smartphone on the train ride home, your changes will be reflected in the version of the file on the Glide servers (i.e. “in the cloud”) and on the versions of that same file residing on your home and work computers. And it works even if your home computer is a Mac, your work computer is PC and your mobile device speaks Android, provided that all three have the syncing app installed.

At any rate, Glide’s vision of a neutral, cloud-based OS and application suite that may be setting the benchmark by which other bigger cloud computing players may be measured (attention Google Wave Development Team). And from what I’ve seen so far it’s a high benchmark.

New NVIDIA SHIELD TV hands-on at CES 2023: all about that controller

My initial experience with NVIDIA SHIELD 2023 was a positive one. While the device does not – at first – seem to be all that different from its predecessor, several key distinctions make the release of 2023’s SHIELD an important one. One of these is the dedication to legacy users NVIDIA is showing with this new product – all software features and connectivity to new devices will be given to the previous model – it’ll work just as well as this new one.

I’m excited about getting to use this new NVIDIA SHIELD device at home, even if it has the same processor, RAM, storage, and connectivity as the previous model. This comes from my personal perspective as an every-single-day SHIELD user – I’ve been using the original NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV device since before its public release. After I reviewed the original NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV, I got one connected to my living room TV and haven’t stopped using it since.

This new model is not one that an original SHIELD owner will need to upgrade to – not unless they like the idea of a slightly smaller piece of hardware to set beside their television. Instead, people who already own an NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV will want to consider buying the new gaming controller on its own.

The new NVIDIA SHIELD may seem the same, spec-wise, but the hardware is quite a bit different. The device is now shipped with both the TV remote and the game controller – the new game controller. It’s important to note that the old NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV will work with the new controller, the new software, and the same apps and streaming capabilities.

So what’s new? The device is smaller – it’s about the size of a

journal now instead of the size of a DVD case. It’s right around the same thickness as its predecessor at its thickest point, and it retains the signature touch-sensitive on button and light-up SHIELD green checkmark on the box. The base is a bit different – it looks really similar as the design aesthetic of the hardware is similar, but the base is more rubbery-coated heavy plastic instead of metal.

This new controller now has vibration to roll with gaming immersion – stuff that rumbles in a game now rumbles on the controller. The controller now has an IR blaster to change volume on the base set, and all capacitive controls have been changed to analog, now there’s just capacitive volume control. The touchpad has been removed – since apparently not a whole lot of people used it.

This new controller no longer uses an LED behind its SHIELD button to notify the user when it’s active. The touch-sensitive SHIELD button has been replaced with an analog push button, and the controller is now turned active when the user lifts it from the table. The controller is said by NVIDIA to be “always on” when it’s working with Google Assistant – it’ll listen for your keywords “OK Google”, but otherwise it’s running with very little battery drain.

Of course we’ll have to test battery life for ourselves when we get our own review unit, but we’re crossing fingers for longevity. The device detects when the user has picked it up with an accelerometer.

Playing Titanfall II streamed from a high-powered gaming PC in the same room made for an impressive demo. The streaming capabilities of this console are just as excellent as they were with the previous NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV unit. The big difference here is in the controller – with Titanfall II, the controller rumbles.

Rumbling in the controller is a subtle difference makes the SHIELD feel a significant amount more like an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4. I hesitate to say it makes the SHIELD more like a “real” gaming console because the SHIELD is a very different monster. Every other feature will be available for the original NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV device because NVIDIA is cool like that.

The new controller will cost $60 USD purchased with NVIDIA online or through one of their retail partners. This device is currently on pre-order through NVIDIA – as is the first of two NVIDIA SHIELD consoles. The NVIDIA SHIELD TV device will come with both the standard controller and the gaming controller and will cost a cool $200 USD. There’ll be a larger version of the console for $300 that’ll have more internal storage as well – that’ll be available later this year.

Microsoft has released a new Office build for for Insiders in the Fast Ring.

The new Office version 1909, build 12026.20000, brings a lot of fixes and improvements, but also some new features for Excel and PowerPoint.

You can now use XLOOKUP and save slides as SVG files

Excel gets a new XLOOKUP function that comes as an improvement for the older VLOOKUP. It has the ability too look vertically, but also horizontally, which means that it replaces HLOOKUP, as well.

With XLOOKUP you’ll only need three arguments: lookup_value, lookup_array, and return_array.

As for PowerPoint, from now on you’ll have the ability to save an illustration or a slide as SVG.

Because SVG is a vector-based image that does not use pixels to render and instead uses vectors, you’ll be able to save charts, shapes, icons, or slides as a scalable vector graphic (SVG) for a cleaner and sharper image.

It’s worth mentioning that OneNote and Visio didn’t get any new changes. Also, there are no known issues with any of the Office apps.

The update should roll out automatically, but you can also manually check for updates to see if you’re on the latest version.

Google Adds New Home And Privacy Features To Voice Assistant

At this year’s CES, voice assistants were big business. Amazon is seemingly adding Alexa to anything it can, from toilets to cars. Not to be outdone, Google was also keen to crow about its own voice assistant, even revealing Google Assistant usage stats for the first time ever.

According to Google, 500 million of us are talking to its voice assistant every month. It’s no surprise, then, that Google is continuing to roll out new features.

The latest feature upgrades focus on home life and that all important word, privacy. Yes, in an attempt to make us feel more comfortable sharing our thoughts with an AI, Google is giving us more tools to control how our data is used.

There are also new features that will extend Google Assistant compatibility with third-party products, as well as schedule devices to start at certain times.

New Google Assistant Privacy Features

Perhaps the most important addition for many, it’s worth looking at what Google has done to appease fears of it listening in to our everyday conversations. You’d be right to be worried too, with 2023 seeing a lot of headlines about the handling of voice recording data. Companies believe the key to our trust is in giving us more control.

“How do I keep my data private?”

Google Assistant will already give you the answer to questions such as “How do I keep my data private?” – it lists off the ways in which you can be assured you aren’t being snooped on, and the precautions that you may want to take. Now it’s, adding some further new features.

“Google, are you saving my audio data?”

The first extends the information sharing aspect by letting users ask “Google, are you saving my audio data?”, which will prompt the device to reveal exactly how it’s using the data. It will also prompt a settings menu where you can make changes to what is and isn’t captured.

“Hey Google, that wasn’t meant for you.”

Another new function is the ability to say to a device “Hey Google, that wasn’t meant for you.” Presumably, this is designed for those awkward moments when you’re mid-argument with your spouse about why the Cheerios haven’t been put away, and Google merrily wakes up wanting to join in. It’s a neat option, especially for those nervous about having their offline conversations captured.

“Google, delete everything I said to you this week”

It’s also worth remembering that you can say “Google, delete everything I said to you this week.” This will erase the AI assistant’s memory banks in one swoop.

Updated Family Features

A couple of new family friendly features have also been added to Google’s voice assistant. We’d struggle to call them essential, but we can see their appeal.

The first is a virtual sticky note, designed to be used with devices that have displays. If you’re the sort of family that struggles to find a pen in a hurry, then this could be a welcome feature. As the name suggests, users can leave a virtual note on the homescreen on a Google Assistant enabled device for all to see. They don’t even need to be logged in, which surely could lead to some abuse when your friends visit and get rowdy. All you need to do is use the voice command “Hey Google, leave a note that says…”

The other feature is the ability to share your essential contacts on a family device with a speed dial function. This allows any user to quickly access important numbers, even if they don’t have them in their own address book.

Google’s Home Services

Google has announced that its assistant will soon work with more third-party devices than ever. It’s quite a list, and far too many to go into here, but includes Philips Hue, August Smart Locks, Telus Wi Fi hubs, and MerossSmart’s garage door opener.

If juggling all these devices seems like hard work, then good news. Soon, Google will intelligently recognising when you set up a smart device with the company’s own app, and prompt you to link it to the Google Home app. Then it’s a case of just linking the new device in the app, without having to enter all the details again.

Another new feature is the ability to schedule devices for certain times through Google assistant, with Scheduled Actions. Have a connected AC unit that you want to kick in five minutes before you get home? Not a problem. This granular approach to smart devices feels like an innovative way to juggle smart home tech, especially as it’s all do-able from within Google’s native Home app, rather than having to access each dedicated app individually.

Snow Leopard is Just Plain Cool: Gartenberg First Hands On

This fall will see the introduction of new operating system releases by the two major vendors in this space. For the first time in recent memory, Apple and Microsoft will go up against each other head to head with the newest versions of their platforms, released within weeks of each other. First up is Apple with Snow Leopard. Originally announced for a late September release, Apple surprised the market with an early ship date. Users will be able to pick up their copies starting on the 28th. Pricing for the release is $29 for Leopard users looking to upgrade. For Mac users still on Tiger, Apple offers the Snow Leopard box set which includes Snow Leopard along with the latest versions of iLife and iWork for $169.

For Leopard users, it’s a no brainer, pick up a copy. Period. For Tiger users, the $169 box set is a great value and easily worth the price of admission (by comparison, the cheapest copy of Microsoft Office for Mac runs $149 and if you want Exchange support, which is free in Snow Leopard, that will set you back $399).

Apple is officially calling Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 but it would be more accurately described as an evolutionary release with features that are downright revolutionary. Snow Leopard is a full 64-bit OS and has the caveat that it works with Intel Macs only. This is the OS release that spells the final swan song for Power PC. Not a surprise and let’s face it, if you’re not on an Intel Mac, it’s time to move on.

I’ve been testing Snow Leopard on a variety of machines over the last few weeks, and so far I’m impressed. Apple has evolved the OS in ways that change core infrastructure while preserving and refining the experience that has differentiated the platform over the years. The result is an elegant, modern OS with some new features that help it retain the status of best of breed in personal computing.

The first step to OS migration is installation. While Windows 7 requires a clean install of applications and data (unless you’re migrating from a like-version of Windows Vista or using Windows 7 Ultimate over most versions of Vista) Apple actually recommends users do an in-place upgrade over their prior version of Leopard or Tiger. That’s pretty unusual. When I asked if it was more desirable for users to start from scratch, I was told “no”. The recommended procedure is to upgrade in place. I tried the update on several machines running Leopard and was pleasantly surprised. The install process was straightforward, simple and worked every time (you actually have to look a bit to find the setting to do a clean install).

The result was a 30 minute process on average that resulted in a stable machine with absolutely no issues, even when I tried to do things like interrupt the installer. It might seem like a small issue but Snow Leopard’s installer is the easiest, simplest and most reliable I have ever used to upgrade an OS from one version to another. Not having to deal with the hassle of moving data offline, re-installing applications and settings is a huge benefit for Apple’s customers and something that will no doubt make many Windows 7 updgraders green with envy. I had no issues post upgrade, all my apps, settings, and configurations worked as they had before, just faster and more reliably.

Even more shocking, I found that on average I recovered more than 10gb of disk space post upgrade (Apple says the average user will see about six to seven back). On machines with less than 100gb of storage, that’s significant and it’s the only time I’ve ever seen an OS upgrade reclaim space and not take up more. The only issue I’ve come across in my use were a handful of third party screen savers which no longer work. It appears that changes in Apple’s graphic architecture might be to blame.

Apple likes to point out that Snow Leopard features fall into three categories, Refinements, Technologies, and Exchange.

There’s actually been a lot of evolution but it’s been small steps between releases that only appear huge when you compare multiple releases back. As part of the Snow Leopard process, I dug out my old G4 Cube which still runs OS X 10.1 and was shocked how much the OS has changed since that release and yet at no point in the OS release cycles did I feel that I needed to re-learn or change my behavior. By contrast, I found the changes Microsoft has made from XP to Vista and Vista to Win 7 to be useful but jarring. With Win 7, I once again had to change my behavior to map to what the OS expected of me.

From an end-user view, the biggest feature in Snow Leopard is Exchange support. Yep, Snow Leopard has direct support for calendar, address book and email for Exchange 2007. This is probably one of the most important things Apple has done recently and now totally opens the Mac to the business market. While Microsoft has supported Mac users with Entourage, as part of Office for Mac, Apple’s integration might obviate the need for that going forward. Combined with iWork, for productivity applications, Apple now has very credible software support for business functionality. It’s also disruptive in terms of price. The main difference between the Mac Office home and student version and business editions is Exchange support in Entourage. The difference in price is $149 vs. $399. With iWork selling at a fraction of that price and Exchange support now dropped to zero, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft can hold on to their Mac customer base until the next version of Office for Mac ships eighteen months from now. Of course, it’s even more ironic that Apple offers free Exchange support in their OS natively while Microsoft insists on charging for that functionality with the required purchase of Outlook for Windows users.

I tested Snow Leopard’s integration with our corporate Exchange server and had no problems configuring or using it. All my mail, calendar and contacts flowed seamlessly. Unlike Entourage, I’ve had no problems with conflicts and more importantly, no issues with calendar events that were mysteriously moved one day off their actual occurrence. Entourage has been the only game in town for Exchange access for a long time and it’s nice to see an alternative. As for me, I’ve totally stopped using Entourage and I don’t see myself ever going back to it.

There’s an OS war brewing this fall and at this point, it’s looking to me like Snow Leopard once again comes out ahead. Apple has produced an evolutionary release, but they’ve priced it as such making it a no-brainer for users to upgrade. If you use Exchange, that feature alone with worth more than twice the cost of admission.
