User Access Control (UAC) is a critical security feature on Windows that protects the system from malicious software and viruses. When you attempt to install new software or make any significant changes to the system configuration, UAC will prompt you to confirm for assigning the admin rights.

However, there are some workarounds that users can use to avoid the UAC elevation prompts. We will discuss these escapes in detail in today’s article and suggest how you can install software without Admin rights. 

For a normal user, Windows will provide a standard user access token if they need administrative access to perform a task. Such tokens are temporary in nature and will be needed each time you need admin rights (For instance, while installing software). 

You can enable the Administrator account to get away with this access token requirement. This will grant you the Full administrator access token, giving you full control over the system without getting the UAC prompts. There are other methods as well that are available for installing software without Admin Rights. 

Microsoft Store has a decent amount of apps in its library for you to install. If you find a relevant application in the store, you can install it without any requirement of administrative rights. Since the apps in the Microsoft store are certified by Microsoft, they are quite safe to install too. 

As already discussed, Windows operating system has an admin account that lets the user have elevated privileges and gain full control over the system. If you enable the Administrator accounts, you can install the software without the UAC prompt.

Here’s how to do it. 

Invoker, a penetration-testing utility, is the most convenient way to bypass the UAC. This makes the software installation possible without any administrator access. You can use the invoker as a batch file to run when the installation file is launched. 

UAC is responsible for notifying the users when they try to install something on their computer or make any modification to the system. You can reconfigure the UAC settings not to notify you while you are trying to install any software over your Windows device.

Windows sandbox is a desktop environment that lets you run different software on it without exposing the main Operating system to the risks associated with such applications. On Sandbox, you don’t need Administrator rights to install any software. 

Here’s how to use this Virtual Machine to install software without any UAC prompts. 

Note: Sandbox is only available on Pro and Enterprise Windows Versions.

Windows OS records all the usernames and passwords registered in the system in a database known as the SAM file. As a last resort, users can also modify this file, clear the credentials, and install their desired software without requiring admin rights.

How To Install The Latest Amdgpu

AMDGPU-PRO is AMD’s proprietary driver for its latest graphics cards. That means that it mainly covers the Polaris cards, the RX 4XX series and the RX 5XX series. It does work with older cards too, but they won’t see as much continual improvement and development.

Like its name suggests, AMDGPU-PRO is intended for professional use. Don’t worry. You can absolutely game with these drivers. AMD branded them for workstation users. As a result, AMD only releases the AMDGPU-PRO drivers for long-term support (LTS) releases and “Enterprise” distributions. For Ubuntu this means that you can only install these drivers on the latest LTS release. In this case, it’s 16.04.2.

Running an LTS release has some drawbacks. For starters, you won’t get the latest releases of new software on your system. You will get security fixes and some backports. You can get around a lot of these constraints in other ways, like importing applications such as Firefox from other releases, but it can be a pain to do so.

If you don’t want to run the LTS release or you already aren’t, you can always install the open-source AMDGPU drivers. In the latest releases of Ubuntu, they may even work out of the box, depending on your card. The open-source drivers don’t get all the new features of the proprietary ones, though, and are lacking in Vulkan support.

Getting the Packages

So you’ve chosen the Pro drivers. How do you get them? Since these drivers are AMD’s territory, they aren’t available in the Ubuntu repositories. You have to go to AMD’s website to download them.

Navigate into your download folder and unpack the archive.

There are a lot of .deb packages in there. AMDGPU-PRO is odd when it comes to proprietary drivers on Linux. In the past proprietary graphics drivers just contained some Linux kernel modules to interact directly with the kernel and the drivers themselves. This is still the way that NVIDIA does it.

AMD took a very different approach recently. All of AMD’s drivers are tightly integrated with the open-source software that makes graphical displays on Linux possible. There are a number of parts in that chain including the kernel itself, the Xorg Server, and direct rendering managers. AMDGPU-PRO is the open-source AMDGPU but with added bits that AMD doesn’t want to open-source yet.

Because AMD doesn’t want to open-source all of this code, they had to take over maintaining their own versions of the open-source packages that the drivers rely on to ensure that everything works well. That’s why there are so many packages with the driver. When you install the AMDGPU-PRO drivers, you are replacing the Ubuntu versions of your graphics packages with the AMD ones. They’re essentially the same, but this gives AMD a controlled environment to ensure that the drivers work perfectly.

Now for the simple part: AMD has included a convenient script to install everything for you in the folder. Just run the script with sudo.

The script will run and install all of the packages that are required for your system. If you want it to ask you questions during the install, leave the “-y” off the end. That’s just there for convenience, and it’ll work fine most of the time.

When the script is done, restart your computer and enjoy your new drivers!

How To Upload Photos To Instagram Without Compressing Them

If you want to avoid compression that occurs when uploading an image to Instagram in an unsupported resolution, follow the instructions laid out in this step-by-step tutorial.

Instagram image sizes

According to the Instagram Help Center:

When you share a photo on Instagram, regardless of whether you’re using Instagram for iOS or Android, we make sure to upload it at the best quality resolution possible.

Things are a bit more complex than that, though. In Instagram talk, “the best quality resolution possible” really means up to a width of just 1080 pixels. Yup, 1080 pixels. You read that right.

If you upload a photo between 320 and 1080 pixels, no resizing will take place. As long as the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5, it’ll appear on Instagram without compression. Share a higher resolution image, and the system will size it down to 1080 pixels horizontally.

If the aspect ratio of your photo isn’t supported, it’ll get cropped to fit a supported ratio.

No processing: Photos with a width between 320 and 1080 pixels and a height between 566 and 1350 pixels, yielding an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5.

Upscaling: If you share a photo at a very low resolution, meaning fewer than 320 pixels wide, Instagram will enlarge it to a width of 320 pixels.

Downscaling: Any images with a higher resolution than 1080 horizontal pixels or 1350 vertical pixels will be sized down by Instagram’s servers to a width of 1080 pixels.

Cropping: If your upload has an unsupported aspect ratio, Instagram will crop the image the best it can to fit a supported ratio (between 1.91:1 and 4:5).

This can all be very confusing, but don’t worry about a thing as we have you covered. Just follow along with us as we explain how to avoid compression when uploading your Instagrams.

How to upload photos to Instagram without compression

In order to avoid triggering Instagram’s downscaling algorithm that may result in compression artifacts, you must first resize your photo to Instagram’s preferred width of 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5. Otherwise, Instagram will recompress and resize your image.

There are plenty of options on the App Store for resizing iPhone images. For the purpose of this tutorial, we’ll be using the free Image Size app, but you can use any app you like.

1) Open the Image Size app and tap the big white frame to add your desired picture from the Photos app.

2) Make sure pixel is selected and in the width and height box, enter one of the following:

For square images: 1:1 (1080 x 1080)

For landscape: 1.91:1 (800 x 418)

For portrait images: 4:5 (1080 x 1350)

As you can see that we aren’t exceeding Instagram’s maximum width of 1080 or maximum height of 1350, its compression algorithms should leave it untouched.

3) Tap the save arrow button to have the final Instagram-perfect resized image in your iPhone Camera Roll.

And that’s it, you now have the correct version of your original image in the Photos library conveniently sized down to a width of 1080 pixels. All that’s left to do at this point is fire up the mobile Instagram app on your iPhone and share the resized image.

Because the image now fits the required dimensions, no compression will take place.

Of course, nothing prevents a power user from using pro tools on their Mac or Windups PC, such as Adobe Photoshop, Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, and so forth, for image resizing. Upon saving the sized-down version to the computer, you could quickly transfer the file to your iPhone via AirDrop, ready to be uploaded to Instagram.

Other guidelines to post images in high quality on Instagram

Don’t use the Instagram camera to take pictures. Use your phone’s built-in Camera app.

Don’t use filters or editing tools in the Instagram app. Edit your image beforehand and simply post it to Instagram.

Use JPEG (JPG) instead of PNG or HEIF.

Don’t add music to the image post on Instagram.

Use the Instagram app on your smartphone to post the image instead of other tools.

Windows 11 is about to be released and everybody is rushing to fix their systems to be compatible with the upcoming OS. Windows 11 has certain security requirements which make it difficult to install the OS on older systems running legacy components. A good example of this would be the need for TPM, Secure Boot, and UEFI. These are all boot menu settings that enhance privacy and security on your system allowing additional security features of Windows 11 to work properly on your system. If you’re using legacy hardware then you might have come across CSM. What is it? And should you disable it? Let’s find out!

What is CSM in BIOS?

CSM or compatibility support module is a part of your UEFI system. UEFI is a modern form of having your hardware communicate with your OS via the BIOS. UEFI is fairly new and in case you have CSM on your system you are likely using a legacy OS currently unsupported by your UEFI system.

Hence, CSM helps emulate a BIOS environment that is compatible with your current OS. Disabling CSM will allow you to enable UEFI on your system which is needed to install the most modern compatible Operating Systems.

How to disable CSM

You will need to access your system’s BIOS menu so that you can disable CSM on your system. Use the guides below depending on your manufacturer to get you started. If your manufacturer is not listed below, you can use the common terms in the next section. These are the commonly used terms in BIOS menus that allow you to disable CSM. You can find the same in your particular BIOS and disable them at your convenience. Let’s get started. 

Gigabyte

CSM will now be turned off on your Gigabyte motherboard. 

You will also see the Secure boot option. But wait, you can’t enable it just yet. So, save and exit your changes and then enter the BIOS again when your system restarts.

Go to the Power menu and select Save & Exit setup.

So, boot into the BIOS settings again by hitting the delete key or F12 key your PC uses.

Select Enabled.

The BIOS screen will now show Secure Boot as enabled.

Go back to the Power menu and select Save & Exit setup.

Note: TPM could be under the same name as well if you are using a more recently manufactured motherboard from Gigabyte. Additionally, if you find no options, you can try looking for the common terms mentioned in the next section. 

Now, it will show the PTT as enabled too. Meaning, TPM 2.0 is now available to your PC.

When you check in the Windows 11 health check app now, it should show Windows 11 to be compatible now.

We are good to go now. Let’s save and restart and you should be able to install Windows 11 now.

Asus

Asus users can use the following guide below. If you have a pre-built system you could be using an ASRock motherboard instead. If that’s the case then we recommend you verify your motherboard manufacturer before proceeding with the guide below. 

Boot into the recovery environment and enter the BIOS on your PC. You can also restart your system and hit the corresponding key to boot into your BIOS. Asus systems usually use the F2 or F8 key to boot into BIOS. 

Once you are booted into the BIOS, switch to the ‘Advanced’ mode by pressing F7 on your keyboard. 

Switch to the Boot tab at the top. 

Scroll down and select ‘CSM (Compatibility Support Module’. 

Now set ‘Launch CSM’ to ‘Disabled’.

Switch to the last tab and select ‘Save and Exit’. 

Confirm your choice and let your PC reboot. You can now boot into your BIOS again and enable Secure Boot on your system. Continue with the steps below to enable Secure Boot or use this guide at a later point when Windows 11 is released to enable Secure Boot on your system. 

Biostar

If you have a Biostar motherboard then you can use the following guide to disable CSM on your system. 

Enter the BIOS menu on your PC. Biostar motherboards usually use the F12 key to enter the BIOS menu. 

Switch to the ‘Boot’ tab once you enter your BIOS menu. 

Select ‘UEFI Boot’. 

Set it as Enabled. 

Once enabled, reboot your system and press the F9 key to enter your Boot menu. You can now select a compatible OS to boot into. Biostar motherboards do not have a dedicated toggle for CSM. You instead get the option to enable UEFI mode. Enabling UEFI automatically disables legacy support which disables CSM on your system. If you are unable to find the UEFI option in the ‘Boot’ tab then we recommend you check the ‘Advanced’ tab instead. 

ASRock

Reboot your system and boot into the BIOS menu. ASRock motherboards use the F2 key to enter the BIOS menu during the POST test. 

Scroll down and select ‘CSM’. 

Set it as ‘Disabled’. 

Select ‘Exit’ at the top. 

Once rebooted, boot into a compatible OS to continue with your setup process. 

MSI

MSI users can use the following guide to disable CSM on their systems. Let’s get started.

Enter the BIOS menu on your MSI system. MSI motherboards usually use the ‘Del’ key during POST to enter the BIOS menu. 

Once you are in the BIOS menu, switch to the ‘Boot’ tab at the top of your screen. 

Go to ‘Boot mode select’. 

Now select ‘UEFI only’. 

Note: Legacy enables CSM while UEFI + Legacy allows MSI motherboards to detect and automatically use the optimum settings for your OS. 

Press F10 on your keyboard to save the changes and exit BIOS. Your PC will automatically restart at this point. You can now select the desired OS or recovery drive from your boot menu. The boot menu can be entered on MSI systems by using the F11 key during the POST process. 

Disable on other boards and units: Common Settings you can look for to disable CSM

If your manufacturer was not listed above then do not worry, entering the BIOS and disabling CSM is a rather simplified process. You need to keep in mind that enabling UEFI will disable CSM automatically and vice versa. This means that if you don’t find a dedicated toggle for CSM, then you can look for the option to enable UEFI on your system instead. Additionally, your motherboard manufacturer could be using other terms to denote CSM on your system depending on your manufacturing date. Here are some common settings that essentially refer to CSM on your motherboard. When you find either of these options, you need to select either ‘Off’, ‘Disabled’, ‘UEFI’, ‘UEFI only’, or ‘No Legacy Support’ for them. Refer to the list below to find the desired CSM settings in your BIOS menu.

Why can’t I find CSM? What do I need?

You need to access your BIOS and have a compatible OS ready to install on your system to disable CSM. CSM usually has a convenient toggle in the BIOS settings which can help you turn it off. Once turned off, UEFI support will be enabled on your motherboard and you will need a compatible OS and BIOS version to manage your system. Additionally, ensure that you have gone through the following checks to ensure that you do not face any issues once you have disabled CSM. 

Ensure that you have a compatible OS installed: If you are using a legacy OS then it is likely why you need CSM. We recommend you install a compatible OS ie: Windows Vista or higher on your system to ensure that you can exit the boot environment properly once CSM is disabled. 

Ensure that you have compatible hardware: You could be using all modern components on your system and yet face issues when disabling your CSM. Peripherals matter a lot when POSTing your PC hence ensure that you aren’t using legacy components or peripherals with your system, If you’re using an older graphics card, monitor, CPU, mouse, or keyboard, then it could be also the reason why your PC is using CSM instead of UEFI despite being on Windows 10. You might need to upgrade your peripherals before you can disable CSM on your PC without breaking its functionality. 

Ensure that your drives use the GPT partition table instead of MBR: UEFI and CSM go hand in hand. If either one is disabled, the other one is automatically enabled (with exceptions). This means that when you disable CSM, your BIOS will automatically resort to UEFI. However, UEFI is only compatible with GPT partition tables. This means that you will need to convert your hard drive to MBR if you wish to disable CSM. It won’t matter if you have a compatible OS installed on an MBR drive. You will need to format your drive in most cases when converting it hence we recommend you perform a full backup before proceeding with the guide. 

Ensure that your drives are set up properly: If you are trying to install a new version of Windows to a different drive or wish to dual boot then ensure that you are installing the compatible OS on your drive with the ‘Bootloader’ partition. This will prevent your system from facing mismatched partition table issues where a drive is MBR and the other one is GPT.
