The mysterious system drive Z: has dumbfounded some users who wondered how to remove it from Windows 10. That is a Z: system drive partition that appears in Windows 10’s File Explorer for some users. Z: drive often appears after users have partitioned a hard drive or upgraded to Windows 10. When they try to open the Z: drive, a pop-up window opens stating, “You don’t currently have permission to access to folder.”

However, an HP support representative shed light on what the Z: partition is. On a forum, he stated:

That new drive labeled (Z: ) is the restore partition which is added to give you the option of restoring back to your previous version of windows. It is nothing to worry about, and should not be deleted.

So the Z: drive is usually a hidden partition. Its appearance on some Windows 10 desktops and laptops is due to a system bug. As the HP representative stated, drive Z: isn’t something users really need to fix.

Yet, there are a few ways users can remove the Z: drive. That doesn’t mean deleting the drive, but merely removing the partition so that it doesn’t appear in Explorer. This is how users can remove the Z: drive in Windows 10.

There are three ways to remove the Z: drive Method 1: Edit the Registry

Some users have confirmed that adding new NoDrive DWORDs (or QWORDs) to the registry gets rid of drive Z: in File Explorer. However, some might prefer to set up a System Restore point before editing the registry as an extra precaution. Using the Registry Editor is the safest way to remove system Z drive on Windows 10.

Open the Run accessory.

Enter ‘NoDrives’ as the name of the new QWORD or DWORD as shown directly below.

Select the Explorer key on the left of the registry.

Then select the Decimal option.

Thereafter, close the Registry Editor window.

Restart Windows after editing the registry and with that, you should remove system Z drive from Windows 10 for good.

Expert tip:

Method 2: Roll Back Windows 10 to a Restore Point

A few users have stated on forums that they’ve removed drive Z: by rolling Windows 10 back to a previous date. System Restore is the utility that rolls Windows 10 back to an earlier date. Note that rolling Windows back to a restore point will also remove software installed after the selected date and undo other system changes.

Select a restore point that will roll the OS back to a time when File Explorer didn’t include a Z: drive partition.

Press the Next button to proceed to the confirmation step.

Method 3: Update Windows 10

Some users have also stated that updating Windows 10 removes the Z: drive. Drive Z: can appear when updates have not completely installed. Thus, checking for Win 10 updates to see if there are any updates waiting to finish might remove the Z: drive.

To check for Windows 10 updates, press the Type here to search button on the taskbar.

Press the Check for updates button to scan for updates.

The Settings Windows Update window also lists pending updates. You might need to restart the platform to complete their installation. In some instances, pending updates might be stuck.

Those are a few resolutions that might get rid of drive Z: and ensure it never reappears in File Explorer. Then drive Z: will be a hidden restore partition again.

How To Remove Shadows In Photoshop (2 Easy Ways)

Random shadows can ruin a photo. Fortunately, you can easily get rid of unwanted shadows in Photoshop and make them look as if they were never there.

In this tutorial, you will learn two ways of removing shadows in Photoshop. Both methods are broken down into a few simple steps to make them quick and easy to follow or reference back to. Whether you want to remove shadows from a person’s face or a background object, all the answers you need are here.

How To Remove Shadows From A Face In Photoshop

Since a shadow is the darker area of a photo, to remove it, you must find a way to lighten the given area. After doing this, you may also need to retouch your subject’s skin to make the tones uniform.

Here’s how it’s done.

Step 1: Create A Curves Adjustment Layer

The Curves dialog displays your image tones. It contains the image highlights, mid-tones, and shadows.

On the right side of the graph, you can find the highlights. You can adjust the highlights by moving the white arrow on the horizontal side of the graph.

You can find your image shadows on the left side of the graph. You can adjust it by moving the dark arrow on the left side of the graph’s horizontal axis.

To lighten the shadows, drag the curve up to the middle of the vertical side of the graph.

This will lighten up your entire image.

Then, press Control + I (Win) or Command + I (Mac) to invert the mask.

This will hide the Curves mask and make your image go back to normal.

Step 2: Create A 50% Gray Layer

In the Contents drop-down menu, select the 50% Gray option. The 50% gray layer lets you see the shadow details better, leading to more accurate results.

Now, set the 50% gray layer blend mode to Color.

Step 3: Remove The Unwanted Shadows

Then, zoom in on the target area by pressing Control + + (Win) or Command + + (Mac) to get a better view of the undesired shadow.

Next, go to the Toolbar and grab the Brush Tool (B).

Once the Brush Tool is selected, go to The Options bar and set the Flow to 5%

Leave the other settings as they are.

Next, set the Foreground Color Swatch to white by pressing D on your Keyboard.

Now, paint over the undesired shadow with the white brush. That will make the shadow go brighter.

Paint over the shadows to brighten them up as much as you can.

You can increase the Flow in areas with darker shadows. For example, I could eliminate most shadows with Flow set to 5%. However, I had to turn up the Flow to 15% to cover the darkest shadow spots, as the one shown below.

Continue covering the shadow area with the white brush. Vary flow if needed, and keep doing this until all the undesired shadows are gone.

When you finish removing the undesired shadows, go back to the Layers panel and turn off the 50% gray layer to see how your editing came out at the end.

Step 4: Change The Curves Layer Blend Mode

After removing shadows, some stains may remain on the skin, as shown in the image below. That’s because the Curves mask affected both pixel luminosity and color.

To correct this, select the Curves layer.

Then, change the blend mode to Luminosity.

This will fix half the problem.

Step 5: Create A Color Correction Layer

To finish removing the stains, create a new layer to place the color corrections.

You can name the layer Color or something like this to make it easier for you to identify your layers.

Change the layer blend mode to Color.

Next, enable the Brush Tool (B).

In the Options bar, set Flow to 10%.

Your cursor will turn into an eyedropper icon, and the foreground swatch will change to the color you sampled.

With that done, paint over the problem area to cover it with the sampled color.

Repeat the step above in all areas where the colors are looking off. This will make the color of your subject skin look more uniform.

Before After

How To Remove Background Shadows In Photoshop

You can remove background shadows by copying pixels near the areas with the unwanted shadows and pasting them on the target area. I will show you how to do this using the Healing Brush Tool.

Step 1: Create A New Layer

When using the Healing Brush Tool to remove shadows, it’s best to work on a separate layer from your image. That way, you can work non-destructively.

Step 2: Enable The Healing Brush Tool

You can find the Healing Brush Tool in the Toolbar. You can also enable it by using the shortcut J.

Step 3: Change Some Healing Brush Tool Settings

You need to change some Healing Brush Tool settings in the Options bar for this tool to work correctly. Here is how to do it.

Set the blend mode to Normal.

Set Source to Sampled.

Mark the Aligned checkbox. This makes Photoshop sample new pixels as you cover the target area.

Set Sample to All Layers; otherwise, you won’t be able to place your color corrections in the blank layer you created.

Step 4: Remove The Shadows

With the Brush Healing Tool settings adjusted, zoom in on the shadow area you want to remove by pressing Control + + (Win) or Command + + (Mac).

After you release your mouse, your cursor will appear as a round icon again. When that happens, drag your cursor around the target area to cover the pixels there.

The pixels that are being used to cover the target area are indicated by the cross icon next to your cursor as you cover the target area.

Up to a certain point, the tool repeats pixels. Thus, you need to sample new pixels from time to time. This is important because too many repeated pixels indicate your photo has been edited.

Repeat the step above until the background shadow is gone.

Before After

Step 5: Add Texture Back In Using The Clone Stamp Tool

On certain images, such as in my example, the Healing Brush Tool may remove some texture from the area where you remove the shadow, resulting in a few blurry areas. The next step is adding the texture using the Clone Stamp Tool.

Then, select the Clone Stamp Tool from the Toolbar or press S.

Make sure the following settings are active in the Options bar. Mode set to Normal, Opacity at 100%, and Flow set to 100%. Check the Aligned box and set Sample to All Layers.

Then, use the brush to paint the texture back over the slightly blurry areas.

Continue this process until you have added enough texture back into the wall.

Before After

With these two simple methods of removing shadows, you have all the shadow-removing tools you need to take care of pesky shadows in any image!

How To Go Live On Discord In 6 Easy Steps

Discord is a VoIP app that offers many features for gamers, including the ability to stream your games. There are a few ways that you can stream in Discord, and the “Go Live” option is designed specifically for gaming.

In this article, we’ll show you how to Go Live on Discord to stream your games on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone. And, since Go Live only works for games, we’ll also cover how you can share your screen or stream a non-game app.

Table of Contents

How to Go Live on Discord on Windows or Mac

To use the “Go Live” function on Discord, you’re going to need three things: A Discord account, the standalone Discord app, and access to a Discord server. Keep in mind that you’re only able to share your screen via the Discord app and not via a web browser.

To Go Live on Discord on Windows or Mac, follow these six steps:

Make sure the game you wish to stream is open in the background, then open Discord.

Enter a server by selecting its icon in the sidebar.

Underneath the channel list, there should be a banner that shows the game you’re playing. Select the icon that looks like a video camera on a monitor. If this isn’t here, see how to manually add a game below.

Choose your screen resolution and frames per second (FPS) and select Go Live.

A window should now appear inside Discord showing your live stream. At this point, any users in the same channel as you will be able to see your live stream.

You can end the stream by selecting Stop Streaming in the banner beneath the channel list. The icon looks like a monitor with an x inside the screen.

Note: To stream at resolutions of 1080p and higher, or 60 FPS, you have to be a Discord Nitro subscriber.

How to Add a Game to Discord

If Discord doesn’t automatically recognize your game, it won’t give you the option to “Go Live”. In this case, you’re able to add the game manually as follows:

Select Settings (the gear icon by your name at the bottom of the channel list).

Select Activity Status from the sidebar.

You should see a banner saying “No game detected”. Beneath this, select Add it!

In the dropdown box, select the game you wish to stream and select Add Game. You must have the game in the background for it to appear in the dropdown menu.

You should now be able to Go Live on Discord.

How to Stream Any App on Discord

As we mentioned, one of the major limitations of the “Go Live” function in Discord is that you’re unable to stream anything other than games. Luckily, Discord has an ordinary screen share function that you can use for these.

At the bottom of the channel list, select Screen.

In the pop-up window, select the screen or application you wish to stream.

Set the channel, resolution, and frames per second, then select Go Live.

Your stream will now appear as a window inside Discord.

You should now be sharing your screen with any people in the same voice channel. If the screen share isn’t working, try these Discord screen-sharing fixes.

Note: If you share a screen, rather than a specific app (like a game), Discord will not stream any audio coming from that app. Check out our guide on how to fix sound problems in your Discord stream.

How to Go Live on Discord on iPhone or Android

Discord also offers screen sharing to iPhone and Android users. Luckily, the process is essentially identical for either device. To share your screen, follow these steps:

Open the Discord app. If you don’t have it, download it from the Google Play Store or Apple Store.

Swipe to the left to access the server list and tap the icon of a server to join it.

Tap a voice channel to enter it.

In the pop-up, select Join Voice. Allow Discord permission to access your microphone if required.

Select the screen share icon at the bottom of the channel. It looks like a mobile phone with an arrow leaving it.

Select Try it out! if prompted. If you’ve used this function before, disregard this step.

Select Start now.

You’re now sharing your screen with anyone in the same voice channel. To stop streaming, simply select Stop sharing.

Going Live on Discord is Easy

How To Get Skype For Chromebook Working In Easy Steps

While Zoom is more of an enterprise solution, Skype, on the other hand, is still popular among general consumers. It’s clean, offers smooth video calls, has useful features, and it’s available on a range of platforms and devices. Not to mention, with the new web-first approach, Microsoft has brought Skype to Chromebooks as well. And that is not all. There are multiple ways to get Skype for Chromebook working seamlessly. So in this article, we bring you a detailed guide on how to install and run Skype on a Chromebook with some helpful tips along the way. With that in mind, let’s see how you can use Skype on your Chromebook in 2023.

3 Ways to Get Skype for Chromebook Working (2024)

There are particularly three ways you can get Skype working on your Chromebook. The first one is the Web App which is, by far, the best way to access Skype on a Chromebook. After that, we have Android and Linux apps. We will discuss all the methods, but let’s start with the web app first.

Get Skype for Chromebook Working: Web App

Apart from offering native apps, Microsoft has moved its prized video-conferencing app to the web. Now, you can seamlessly access Skype on a Chromebook using the Chrome browser. It comes with support for call notifications, screen sharing, and the recent, Skype Meet Now feature. Simply put, you won’t miss any of the major features of the desktop app. Now having said that, let’s get to the steps.

2. After that, you will be instantly taken to the main dashboard which is pretty similar to the desktop app. You can chat, make a video call, start a group call with Skype Meet Now, and more.

3. As you can see, Skype on Chromebook now supports screen sharing, floating window, real-time subtitles, and a lot more.

Use Skype on Chromebook: Android App

If you have Play Store support on your Chromebook then you can use the Android variant of Skype on your Chromebook. In my testing, it worked pretty well, but you don’t have access to some of the desktop features like background blur and real-time caption.

1. Open the Play Store on your Chromebook and install Skype (Free).

2. Now, log in to your Microsoft account and you will be able to access most of the features of Skype Desktop. I would say, the Android app is really good if you want all-time notification and offline support.

Get Skype for Chromebook Working: Linux App

Linux on Chromebook still does not have access to the webcam due to virtual machine restrictions and as a result, Skype can’t use the webcam. The microphone works fine out of the box so there is that. To put it straight, if you want Skype for voice calls and chats then the Linux app is a really good option on Chromebook.

1. First of all, set up Linux on your Chromebook by following the linked guide. If the Linux option is not available in Settings then it means your Chromebook doesn’t have support for Linux.

2. Next, open the Skype download page and choose “Get Skype for Linux DEB” from the drop-down menu. It will download the Skype installer on your Chromebook in DEB format.

4. Finally, after the installation, you will find Skype under the Linux folder inside the launcher. Open it and sign in to your Microsoft account. It might ask you to create a keyring. Basically, it will encrypt your Skype password on Linux so that no application can access it. If you want, you can add an extra layer of security.

Install Skype on Chromebook and Enjoy Seamless Video Calls

How To Partition Hard Disk Drive In Windows 10? – Webnots

Simply put partitioning a disk means dividing the hard disk or storage device into several sections. Each section is a logical unit, which function as a separate physical device. After portioning, Windows will treat the partitions as separate volumes displayed on the File Explorer under “This PC” with a unique letter assigned to each.

Windows Partitions

Benefits of Partitioning Hard Disks

Nowadays, laptop and desktop computers come with larger disk drive. It is common to have drives as larger as TBs in size. For example, below are the available sizes of hard disk of Dell laptops indicating you can buy from 32GB to 2TB.

Dell Hard Disk Sizes

However, it is not a good idea to use 2TB of hard disk as a single drive on your laptop. You may need to partition the hard drive due to the following reasons.

File/ Data Organization – Partitioning your disk allows splitting and storing data in a different location, simplifying file management in your PC. Each virtual drive will have its own file system, thus preventing corruption of the system data.

Data Backup – In case of a system failure, you can reinstall Windows or recover from your backup without affecting the data in the other drives.

Security – You can encrypt an entire partition that contains your sensitive data.

Speed – You can move your frequently used and dependent data in one partition to enhance speed.

How to Partition Hard Disk in Windows 10?

Now you know the reasons to partition your drive. Next step is to understand how to create partitions of hard disk in Windows 10. You can either do this from the graphical user interface of Disk Management tool or directly from the Command Prompt.

Related: Fix hard disk errors in Windows 10.

Method 1: Partition Hard Disk Using Windows 10 Disk Management

Windows 10 has a Disk Manager, which allows users to create partition drives without having to install extra software or formatting your PC. First, you need to log into Windows with an Admin account and ensure that the drives have enough space to allow more partitions.

Open Disk Manager

The Disk Management window shows the different partitions, their capacity and free space. You can also see the different type of allocation marked with color codes with a key at the bottom of the window.

New Simple Volume Wizard

Enter the size of the new volume in MBs and go to the “Next” page. If you want to allocate the entire free space, leave the maximum volume size.

Assign Letter

Remember, Windows by default will install the operating system on C drive. You can choose different letters like D: or E: during installation. However, we don’t recommend this, as many programs by default will try to install on C drive. Also, when you connect external drives like USB; Windows will automatically assign the available drive letter to external drives temporarily.

Choose your preferred formatting settings but in case you don’t understand the various options, leave the page untouched. We recommend the NTFS file system (default file system in Windows 10), which optimize space and speed of the partition.

Finish Partitioning

You will notice a newly created logical drive on the disk management window.

New Logical Drive

This will also show as a separate disk on the file explorer in “This PC” section.

Extra Local Drive

Related: How defragment hard disk in Windows 10?

Method 2: Partition Hard Disk from Command Prompt

You can also partition hard drives in Windows 10 using the Command Prompt.

List Disk

Use the “sel + disk number” to select the disk and then “list partition” to see the various partitions.

List Partition

If you have no free space, you will need to shrink one of the volumes. Type “sel + partition number” to select the volume and the “shrink” specifying the desired size of the new volume.

Shrink Partition

Now you have 20GB unallocated and you can create a new volume and assign a letter automatically as shown in the image.

Create Partition

Format the new volume and for Windows to complete the formatting.

Format Partition

Your new drive is now ready for use so you can exit “diskpart” and close Cmd.

Conclusion

Partitioning your hard drive enables you to separate your system and personal data preventing serious data loss in case of a problem in one of the disks. In Windows 10, you can use the Windows Disk Management tool or the diskpart command to create and manage partitions. Windows will assign a letter from A to Z to the partitions on your hard disk.
