It wasn’t so much the inability to take a hot shower. It wasn’t the inconvenience of having to run to 7-11 for coffee in the morning. It wasn’t the fact that we couldn’t wash clothes, couldn’t watch TV or couldn’t get cool (other than the cold showers.) We were learning to live with the sounds of generators in our neighborhood and we were acquiring a taste for warm beer.

The killer was no Google.

In the aftermath of a hurricane, it’s easy to start appreciating the simple luxuries we take for granted. Hot water, air conditioning, email, gasoline, ice, garage door openers, overhead lights, alarm systems, electric guitars, CD players and batteries.

The local stores were pilfered of D batteries and ice on day one. I found D batteries yesterday at a convenience store. The clerk kept calling me “boss†in that nondescript accent that conjures up images of a third world street market. No one else had them, and Boss could buy them for only $9.99 for four. I bought three packages and grumbled as I exited his store. People had apparently been loading shopping carts full of ice and batteries on the first day of no power, with no regard for others or for rationing. It was every man for himself and the tensions were mounting in the streets. Price gouging was widespread, and in a free market economy, that’s OK, even in times of emergency and natural disasters. The guy calling me “boss†had batteries and no one else did and I needed them for my flashlights. So he made a few bucks per pack. I can forgive him that. He came to this country for the opportunities and opportunity knocked in the form of a hurricane. So he’s got a little to learn about compassion and fairness. I sensed he was new to the USA, so I let it slide. I liked how his D cells were in a box behind the counter, with no prices on them, as if they were contraband or moonshine. He acted like he was selling me drugs. “Come back tomorrow for ice, boss.†Yeah, maybe.

My most trusted friend, the one I turn to for everything, was the one I was most glad to have back. My Google homepage.

Even after days without power, it’s still hard to break the habit of reaching for the light switches. You head to the bathroom and you naturally reach for the wall. “Oh, damn, that’s right. DUH! No power.†And even after days without power, it’s still hard to deny the impulse that says, “I need to Google that.â€

If the truth were told, Google is less of a friend and more of a slave to me. It’s not like I give anything back to Google. It asks nothing of me and does exactly what I tell it to do while expecting no compensation. And as that relationship has developed, I sometimes feel cheated when my slave Google doesn’t deliver my expected results. But then again, I am not Google’s only master.

Google is becoming more and more a victim of the moneygrubbers and the con artists of late. I know you’ve seen what I’m talking about. I’m talking about that first page of results that isn’t exactly what you were looking for. For a while there, it didn’t matter what I searched, the top result was always eBay. Find great prices on dermatologist at eBay? I beg your pardon. That was some tricky SEO going on there and I doubt eBay was directly responsible. But someone figured out how to land at the top for just about everything I wanted to find.

As an SEO guy, I want to keep my buddy Google honest. I want to find real results for what I’m searching for. I don’t want to drive all over town, as it were, searching for D batteries, only to find that the only batteries available in my search results are overpriced. I want to get exactly what I’m after, with no hype and no lies, by at least page one of my search results. You’re the same way. You hate liars and cheaters and thieves, hiding things up their sleeves. You hate when they land in the top spots, paid for or not. And you learn to look past them.

So I started to wonder if maybe it’s time we in the SEO world stopped expecting the top three slots for our clients. Maybe our clients need to be content with a top 10 placement, because in order to beat some of these clowns who are winning, you’re going to need lots of money or lots of tricks, some of them perhaps not exactly ethical. Maybe by now, the searchers – you and me – know better than to look at the top spot. We know that the real meat of our search can be found a little lower. We’re trying to avoid the price-gougers, Boss.

Can we as SEO professionals guarantee the top spot on Google? Do we even want to?

Not having Google made me remember my friend fondly as the perfect deliverer of my every search. But it’s not really. I hated not having my buddy at my side when the power was out. Googlelessness is a sad way to live. But as soon as the lights came back on, glad though I was to have my buddy back, I remembered the flawed slave it really is. Google answers to everyone, and not everyone is playing fair.

How To Setup Http(S) Load Balancing In Google Cloud With Cdn

Here we will set up WordPress, Nginx, PHP, Cloud SQL, and Cloud Storage for your Load Balancer.

Connect to Cloud SQL

As the instances are created dynamically you ned to connect to Cloud SQL using Cloud SQL proxy or with Private IP.

Change hostname to 127.0.0.1

Using Private IP

Go to your Cloud SQL Instance and enable Private IP.

Change hostname to PRIVATE_IP_ADDRESS

While using Private IP, make sure you are using the same VPN network.

This setting will issue a Google managed Let’sEncrypt Certificate.

Attention: Once you have created a certificate it will be in the PROVISION status. Once the certificate is ACTIVE, you’ll have SSL issues for a few minutes with the error message ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH. It took 15 minutes for mine to have everything up and running.

Uploading your own Certificate

To upload your own certificate, In Create mode choose to Upload my certificate

Here we use the Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate as an example

If you haven’t setup SSL in your VM instance, please check Installing SSL in Google Cloud Platform

SSH your VM Instance and enter the following commands and copy all contents

In Public key certificate copy and paste the contents of fullcahain.pem file

In Certificate chain copy and paste the contents of cert.pem file

In Private key  copy and paste the contents of privkey.pem file

Enter a name for your IPv6 frontend configuration

In Protocol select HTTPS

In IP version select IPv6

In IP address select the IPv6 address you reserved

In Certificate select the certificate you just created

That’s all now your Backend and Frontend are configured

Configure DNS and Setup Cloud CDN

Edit the A record and replace the IPv4 address with your newly reserved IPv4 address.

In Resource record type select AAAA record

Enter the IPv6 address that you reserved

In Origin select the Load balancer you just created.

Next you can set up Cloud Armor to secure your application.

That’s all, now your Load Balancer is configured to scale your website horizontally with Nginx web server

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

Google’s Nexus 9 features an 8.9-inch LCD display with 2048 x 1536 resolution and a pixel density of 281 ppi. The Tab S features an 8.4-inch Super AMOLED display with 2560 x 1600 resolution and a pixel density of 359 ppi.

Both tablets offer great viewing angles and are extremely sharp. However, the biggest difference between these two tablets is the aspect ratio. The Nexus 9 has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which isn’t too common on tablets for a reason. Letter boxing occurs more than we’d like it to when watching videos or movies, but that’s the sacrifice you’ll need to make when choosing a squarer display. We understand that no aspect ratio is perfect for everyone, as Samsung’s 16:9 ratio has its flaws as well. Holding the tablet in portrait mode is okay, but Internet browsing in landscape on the Tab S isn’t ideal, as not much information can fit on the screen, especially because web pages aren’t usually laid out side-to-side. Additionally, thanks to the Nexus 9’s LCD panel, we’ve experienced a bit of light bleed on the top and bottom of the display. However, that’s nothing you would particularly notice in everyday use.

When it comes to displays, if you want a more natural color display palette, you might want to consider the Nexus 9. But if you’re partial to punchier colors and deeper blacks, the Tab S is for you. What’s more, the Tab S offers a significantly higher pixel density, resulting in an overall clearer display.

The Nexus 9 offers the powerful NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor backed by 2GB of RAM. The Tab S features Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octacore chipset backed by 3GB of RAM.

Thanks to the Tegra K1, gaming on the Nexus 9 is runs particularly well. We haven’t seen many dropped framerates or stutters in games, so if you’d like a tablet specifically for gaming, the Nexus 9 might be your best bet. Gaming on the Tab S isn’t laggy either, though we can’t help but notice it feels just half of a step slower than the Nexus 9. If you buy one tablet or the other for gaming, you won’t be disappointed with either.

When it comes to performance in software, the two don’t really differ. Thanks to the stock Google experience on Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Nexus 9 flies through the software with ease. We didn’t notice many hiccups while scrolling through recent apps, web pages, or really any other aspects of the software. Though the Tab S has many more software features to push around in Samsung’s TouchWiz, it performs surprisingly well.

In case you’re new to the tablet world, software is where these tablets differ more than anything. Google’s Nexus line has always come with a “no-frills” software experience. Nexus devices always run stock Android software, and that can be both a positive and a negative. Without a ton of extra features crammed into the device, the software runs very smoothly. Whether you’re a fan of Android 5.0 Lollipop or not, there’s no arguing that the software experience is one of the most simple and elegant experiences out there. On top of that, this device was made by Google, so it will be one of the first devices to receive any updates that are pushed out to Android.

Samsung takes a vastly different route when it comes to software. We’ve all said it before, and we’ll say it again: TouchWiz is bright, big, colorful, and very busy. From the cluttered Settings panel to the busy notification drop down menu, it’s clear that simplicity isn’t Samsung’s strongest asset. However, it’s cluttered for a reason. With so many extra features crammed into the software, you’ll find some to be extremely useful and others to just take up space. Unfortunately, software updates are pretty scarce with Samsung devices. The Tab S is still running Android 4.4 KitKat. While not too many other manufacturers have pushed out Lollipop updates so far, Samsung is usually last to update their devices. Though it’s a relatively new tablet, the Tab S may not see its Lollipop update for quite some time.

When comparing the two, it should be noted that Samsung is one of the only device manufacturers to actually use a big screen the correct way. Features like Multi-Window that allows for running multiple apps at once, Smart Stay that keeps the screen on when you’re looking at it, and Smart Pause that pauses a video when you look away, really help make for a better media-consuming experience.

Where the Nexus 9 comes up short in the number of features, it makes up for it in design. Android 5.0 Lollipop brings more UI enhancements to Android using Google’s new Material Design language. In Lollipop, everything warrants a movement, whether that be the information on the notification shade moving when you pull it down, or any number of new layers Google has added in to show more depth in the software, it’s all just really good looking. We aren’t sure what Lollipop will bring to Samsung’s TouchWiz, but we do know that it may not get there for quite some time.

All in all, if you’re looking for a tablet that has more features than you can count and incredible multitasking software, the clear choice is the Tab S. But if you’re more partial to the simplistic, elegant and quickly-updated software experience, we’d suggest you go with the Nexus 9. Keep in mind that neither devices’ software experience is perfect, and sacrifices will need to be made with both.

The Nexus 9’s starting price is $399 for the 16GB Wifi-only model. Higher storage options and LTE-connected variants are also available, so be prepared to pay more depending on which option you choose. It’s also available in Black, White, and Sand colors, and can be purchased directly through Google Play, HTCor Amazon.

The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 also begins at $400, and can be bought directly through Samsung, or basically any other electronics retailer out there. It’s available in Dazzling White or Titanium Bronze, and also comes in higher-storage variants. Though the Tab S is priced at $400, at the time of writing this, we found a few on Amazon being sold for under $350.

So, there you have it — our comparison of the Google Nexus 9 vs. the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. Again, your decision on whether to buy one tablet over the other completely lies in your needs. The Tab S offers great multitasking software, a solid build quality, and is slightly more portable. However, be willing to put up with cluttered software and a slightly lower battery capacity. The Nexus 9 offers a beautiful, simple software experience with a large battery and loud front-firing speakers. Nonetheless, choosing the Nexus 9 means you’ll need to deal with slightly less-quality hardware and not many extra tablet-friendly software features.

When comparing these two, it’s very apparent that neither one is close to perfect, but if you’re looking for a tablet that has an 8 or 9-inch display, you can’t go wrong with either one. Let us know your thoughts on these two tablets!

What Is Google Safe Browsing In Chrome?

Google Safe Browsing is a service that allows developers and browsers to check if a URL contains malware or phishing content. The service relies on a list of URLs that are regularly updated based on data collected from users.

The list of browsers that rely on the Google Safe Browsing service includes Chrome, Safari, Vivaldi, Firefox, and GNOME Web. As you can see, Google Chrome is not the only browser using the service.

How Does Google Safe Browsing Work?

To use Safe Browsing, Chrome saves a series of mandatory cookies on your machine. Every time you visit a website, Save Browsing compares that URL against the list of URLs from its database. If any matches are found, you’ll get an alert. The type of alert you receive depends on the threat detected: malware, potentially unsafe scripts, phishing scripts, and other threats.

How to Enable Safe Browsing in Chrome

On Android and iOS

Launch Chrome and tap More (the three dots).

Then select Settings → Privacy and security.

Tap Safe Browsing and enable the option.

On PC

Then go to Settings.

Select Privacy and security, and then Security.

After that, select the Safe Browsing protection level you want to use.

Refresh the browser to apply the changes.

There are three protection levels available. Each level brings its own specific security features. Of course, if you don’t want to take any risks, enable Enhanced Protection.

Safe Browsing Enhanced Protection

This level offers proactive protection against malicious websites. In other words, Chrome will nip threats in the bud. Or as Google says:

Predicts and warns you about dangerous events before they happen.

You’ll receive alerts about potentially unsafe webpages, download files, and extensions. You’ll also get alerts about password breaches.

If you enable this option, keep in mind that Chrome will send your browsing data to Google. As Google explains:

Safe Browsing Standard Protection

URLs are analyzed and compared against the most recent copy of the Safe Browsing list stored locally on your system. So, there’s no direct connection to Safe Browsing’s servers for now. But if a website is trying to inject malware into your computer or steal your credentials, Chrome will send that URL to Safe Browsing’s servers.

You can enable a series of additional options, including alerts about password breaches.

No Protection

By checking this option, you basically turn off Safe Browsing. Your computer won’t be protected against malicious websites. And Chrome won’t alert you about any cyber-threats.

We don’t recommend disabling Safe Browsing. If you’re worried about your browsing data being sent to Google, you can enable Standard Protection.

Safe Browsing Lookup API

Google also maintains the Safe Browsing Lookup API. Developers can use this security protocol to check URLs against Google’s lists of unsafe webpages. If an URL has been flagged as a phishing and deceptive website or as a webpage hosting malware, the API will return an Unsafe result.

Many users expressed their privacy concerns in regards to the Lookup API. This is because the protocol does not hash the URLs to be analyzed. As a result, the server knows what URLs API users have analyzed.

Safe Browsing Update API

Furthermore, when Chrome sends a verification request to Google, it sends only the first 32 bits of an SHA-256 hash of that URL. Google cannot determine the complete URL based only on a partial URL fingerprint.

Google Is Not Building A Coronavirus Testing Website

President Donald Trump erroneously stated in an emergency address that Google is building a coronavirus testing website.

Trump said 1,700 Google engineers are working on a coronavirus screening site that could be launched as early as this Sunday.

On the contrary – not only is the site not ready to launch but it’s not even being developed by Google. The site is being developed by a company called Verily, which is owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet.

Google and Verily are entirely different companies, which Google itself clarified in a tweet:

“We are developing a tool to help triage individuals for Covid-19 testing. Verily is in the early stages of development, and planning to roll testing out in the Bay Area, with the hope of expanding more broadly over time.

“We appreciate the support of government officials and industry partners and thank the Google engineers who have volunteered to be part of this effort.”

Verily provided its own statement to TechCrunch:

“Verily is developing a tool to help triage individuals for COVID-19 testing. We are in the early stages of development, and planning to roll testing out in the Bay Area, with the hope of expanding more broadly over time,” the company said in its statement. “We appreciate the support of government officials and industry partners and thank the Google engineers who have volunteered to be part of this effort.”

That’s a fairly important piece of information to leave out in a statement that was broadcast live to the entire United States.

Just for comparison’s sake, read Trump’s statement below:

“I want to thank Google. Google is helping to develop a website. It’s going to be very quickly done, unlike websites of the past, to determine whether a test is warranted and to facilitate testing at a nearby convenient location… Google has 1,700 engineers working on this right now. They have made tremendous progress.”

Based on what we’ve learned since Trump’s statement, here are the key takeaways from all of this:

Verily is developing a coronavirus screening website, not Google.

Google and Verily are both owned by Alphabet, but are otherwise separate companies.

People will be able to visit the website and enter their symptoms to discover if they’re consistent with symptoms of coronavirus.

The website will help direct individuals to the nearest facility where they can get properly tested.

Results of in-person tests can later be retrieved on the website.

At this time we still don’t know when the site will launch, or any other pertinent information.

Battlefield 2042’S Portal Platform Is What Super

Battlefield 2042’s Portal platform is what super-fans like me have been waiting for

Last month, we heard a rumor which claimed that one of Battlefield 2042’s unrevealed modes was actually a sandbox mode that would let players combine different Battlefield eras. Today at EA Play Live, EA and Ripple Effect – the new name for DICE LA – revealed exactly that. The new mode is called Battlefield Portal, and it’s described as “a love letter to fans and creators.”

EA and Ripple Effect have published a lengthy blog post to the Battlefield website with details on Battlefield Portal, but the short and sweet of it is that Battlefield Portal is a mode that will let you customize most things about a match. For example, you can pit different factions against one another, customizing their weapons and vehicles. You can also change movement settings and remove things like going prone or aiming down sights.

Battlefield Portal will pull components from three different games from the franchise’s past: Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3. In addition to those three classic games, you’ll also have the content in Battlefield 2042 available to you in Battlefield Portal. Players will create “experiences” using components from all four games that other players can join. When creating those experiencing, players can run either custom matches or use preset modes like Conquest, Team Deathmatch, or Rush.

You’ll be able to follow creators you like and hop into their games when they’re hosting them, while creators will have some admin tools available to them that let them ban usernames across all of the experiences they create. Ripple Effect even says that it will feature popular experiences in official playlists, so if you make a good one, it could end up in front of a lot of eyes.

For those who have experience with visual scripting logic, there will even be a Logic Editor they can use, allowing for more granular changes that the settings menu can’t accomplish on its own. So, for those who want a lot of control over what happens in their custom game modes, it sounds like they’ll have the tools to get there.

Ripple Effect says that there will be six fully reimagined maps launching with Battlefield Portal. From Battlefield 1942, we’ll see Battle of the Bulge and El Alamein. The two maps from Battlefield: Bad Company 2 are Arica Harbor and Valparaiso, while finally, we’ll see Caspian Border and Noshahr Canals from Battlefield 3. In addition, Ripple Effect will be bringing back various weapons, gear, vehicles, and soldiers from those games, including the M1 Garand, the M416, the Spitfire, and the B17 Bomber.
