If you’re walking around New York City this afternoon, you may be handed a flyer by the NYC Police Department with a “Public Awareness Notice” for so-called “Apple users”. This note informs users of iPhone and iPad devices that upgrading to iOS 7 will add security features that will keep these devices from being reprogrammed without an Apple ID and Password. These notes go on to suggest that “additional information on iOS 7 features” can be found at Apple’s homepage.

The feature these notes speak of is indeed included with iOS 7 (see: Activation Lock), added by Apple to help cut down the turnover rate of stolen or otherwise lost phones to thieves. The notes handed out by the NYC Police Department also suggest that users register their devices with the NYPD’s Operation Identification Program. Operation Identification is offered free of charge by the New York City Police Department. The program involves engraving an identifiable serial number with the letters N.Y.C. on all portable valuables such as computers, fax machines, copiers, etc. and registering only the number and the owners name and address with the Police Department.

This program can be implemented by contacting your local Precinct’s Crime Prevention Officer. The officer will loan you an engraver, which is used to mark all equipment. Benefits from this program include:

• Special New York City Police Department decals are issued which are affixed to windows alerting people that all property contained within, has been registered in this program.

• The marked property is more difficult for a thief to sell.

• Stolen property in the possession of a thief is easily traceable to its rightful owner.

• Found property can easily be identified and returned to the rightful owner.

It is not clear at this time if these flyers are being handed out across the 5 boroughs or if they’re being distributed in centralized locations. Several flyers have popped up with “72nd Precinct” printed on them while others show no such specific marking. According to 9to5mac, flyers are being handed out at Apple Stores “where people are walking out with new iPhone 5s/5c with iOS 7 installed” as well. Twitter users Tam Nguyen and Michael Hoffman began mentioning these “uniformed NYPD officers” handing out flyers as early as yesterday.

Nguyen stated that the NYPD was at more than one Apple store handing out flyers while Hoffman suggested “four uniformed NYPD officers” were standing at a subway stop closer to 6:30PM handing out the flyer you see in this article with 72nd Precinct printed on top and down below. The shorter flyer comes from Jim Rosenberg who sends message from what AllThingsD suggests was a subway station on 168th St. in Manhattan.

Virtual Reality’s Future: 7 Key Trends

But you can’t build software without the hardware, and you can’t go into new fields and reach the masses without affordable hardware. VR and AR now have both. So where will virtual reality go in the future? We asked a few people in the industry and here’s what they say.

1) More senses

Currently, VR and AR are visually-oriented. However, haptic feedback is a potential new use and feature for VR and AR to give you a feeling as well as a sight. Some videogame controllers already have this, where the controller vibrates to simulate action in the game. So when you reach out to something or move it, you get a sensation in a VR glove of touch.

And smell-o-vision could come to VR as well. Frank Azor, general manager of the Dell-subsidiary Alienware, which specializes in high-end gaming rigs, told Time magazine he believes future VR devices could introduce smell and perhaps touch in the form of winds and temperatures.

2) 3D scans of buildings

To give the fully immersive experience, a 3D scan requires a special camera. Erika Dalager, marketing and communications manager for roOomy, which specializes in VR room design, said 3D cameras are coming to make this happen. There’s Matterport, which does 3D scans of homes for both realtors and home design, and Google Tango, due later this year. These new cameras will make VR more realistic and immersive.

3) Faster networks

The trend toward VR technology will have significant impact on how networking and computing services are provided to support the end users. VR apps will require real-time interaction with cloud-based servers, which impacts the need for high bandwidth connectivity, and introduces the requirement for low latency connectivity to support this real-time interaction, according to Scott Sneddon, senior director, SDN and Cloud, at Juniper Networks.

“VR devices could also require peer-to-peer connectivity, which is a traffic pattern that traditional mobile and wireline networks were not designed for. This could have far reaching impacts on how network service providers and cloud service providers architect their services, and creates great opportunities for creative solutions to these challenges,” he said.

“Advancements in mobile VR will be incredibly important this year, as the inability to move around in VR experiences with mobile VR is limiting, although is great for watching 360 content. Intel’s Project Alloy was the first glimpse of positional tracking working on mobile VR,” said Dominguez.

5) Growth in Non-Gaming Content

As organizations offer customers the ability to consume more content and teams embrace the technical requirements to do so, Collision sees availability of VR content will increase as commodity pricing starts to slide. “Producing content is still expensive but I predict costs will start falling by the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2023,” he said.

Google To Save The Innocents Hit By “Farmer Update”

Google was under a lot of pressure to make an update that cast the “content mills” from its index.

With the heavy pressure of the tech media community, spunky upstarts like Blekko calling the company out, and an acknowledgment from Google of an increase in spam on its index, the search engine giant had to act both quickly and effectively.

Their most recent major algorithm change, known in the tech community as the “farmer update,” was released with bullet speed and did a great job at getting rid of a lot of spam – but at what cost?

In any war, some inncoents will be hurt, and that seems to include the war on spam.

When the update went live, thousands of smaller sites lost some ranking, with some losing literally all SERP visibility. This was primarily seen in the blogging and e-commerce community, but the reach could be felt far and wide.

Google Fellow Amit Singhal stated that the company is aware of some fallout, and that “no algorithm is 100% accurate.”

That isn’t an excuse or escape hatch, though. Rather, it’s Singhal’s way of saying that the company knows there’s more to work on, and that they are already plugging away, aiming on bringing the algorithm “close to 100%.”

He has stated that engineers are already at work on those adjustments, building an extra “layer” on the foundation of the farmer algorithm.

While some rumors have stated that these alterations have already been made, Google has confirmed that any changes already present are minor (part of the “more than one alteration per day” that Google’s algorithm typically sees); the layer they are referring to is yet to come. In other words: “Innocents” hurt by this update will be thrown a floater in the near future!

Cchide: The Best Way To Hide Control Center Sections In Ios 7

There are a couple of tweaks to be found in Cydia that claim to allow you to customize the sections in Control Center, but only one of them is worth your time. CCHide is the tweak that you should target should the need arise to remove sections from Control Center in iOS 7.

Ever since iOS 7 was released in beta form, I’ve been dying for a way to customize Control Center. It comes as no surprise that just a few days after the iOS 7 jailbreak released to the public, a deluge of Control Center tweaks hit Cydia allowing you to do just that. CCHide is one of the best Control Center tweaks available, and it is hands-down better than its closest competitor, CleanCC.

As we tend to do, we’ve created a video walkthrough showcasing all of the features and functions of this excellent new jailbreak tweak. Have a look inside as we take CCHide through a thorough spin on video.

As with most jailbreak tweaks of this type, once CCHide is installed, you can find its options in the Stock settings app. Inside of CCHide’s preference pane, you’ll notice several toggles dedicated to the different sections to be found within Control Center.

The following toggles are contained within CCHide’s preferences:

Brightness Section

Media Controls Section

Airdrop/Airplay Section

Quick Launch Section (app shortcuts)

There’s also a toggle for enabling conditional media controls. This toggle forces media controls to stay hidden unless it detects that music is currently playing. Unfortunately, this conditional control didn’t want to play nice with Spotify, so the media controls stayed hidden, even though music was playing by means of the Spotify app. Hopefully this issue will be fixed in a future update.

The best thing about CCHide is how easy it is to use. You can literally disabled a toggle for a specific section, and have that section immediately disappear. The CleanCC jailbreak tweak that I mentioned earlier tries to do a lot of the same things as CCHide, but judging from that tweak’s preferences, any changes require a respring. Sadly, I was unable to totally confirm this, because I couldn’t get CleanCC working properly on any of my jailbroken devices.

I don’t know about you, but there are some sections in Control Center that I rarely use. The one that’s most obvious in that regard is the AirDrop/AirPlay section. I rarely use that section, so it was the first one to go as I was testing out CCHide. But it doesn’t just stop there. You can hide every section to be found in Control Center, if that’s your desire. In the end, you can make the Control Center overlay nothing more than a small little nub due to it being completely devoid of sections.

Simply put, if you’re searching for a cleaner looking Control Center in iOS 7, then look no further. CCHide can be downloaded free of charge on Cydia’s BigBoss repo. Customizing the iPhone lock screen is easy, all you need to do is long press on the clock at the Lock Screen, login to your iPhone as usual, and you’ll immediately be in the customization screen.

You can also access the lock screen customizations from the Settings app, of course.

2: Mark iMessages as Unread

Ever wished you could mark a message as unread? Now you can, using the same simple swipe gesture that marks emails as unread on iPhone.

How many times have you read a message, but you can’t respond to it at the moment, or you want some time to think before responding? Or perhaps you accidentally tapped on a message marking it as read, when you didn’t want to do that quite yet?

Now with a simple swipe to the right, you can mark that iMessage as unread, and return to it later.

3: Edit Sent Messages

Sent an embarrassing typo? Meant to say something else? Regret whatever you typed and sent? Now you can edit sent iMessages and correct those issues.

Long-press on a sent message and you’ll find the ability to edit the sent iMessage. You have up to 15 minutes to edit a sent message.

Note this works seamlessly on iMessage between fellow iMessage users, but not to SMS text message Android users, who simply get sent another message of whatever the correction is.

4: Undo Sent iMessages

Ever sent a message you regret sending? Welcome to the club! Now you have 5 minutes to undo the sending of that iMessage.

Tap and hold on the sent message and choose “Undo Send” to retract the message. Phew!

This only works with fellow iOS 16 users, so if you’re trying to undo sending of a message to someone using an earlier version of iPhone system software, or Android, it’s not going to work.

5: Focus Mode Ties to the Lock Screen

You can now have Focus Modes reflected on your lock screen. This allows you to enter a Focus mode and then have the lock screen change to accommodate whatever that Focus state is. For example, maybe you have a Focus for exercise, in which case you can have an inspirational lock screen image combined with stats from your Apple Watch shown as widgets. This is a fun one to play around with and customize.

6: Schedule Sending Emails in Mail App

The Mail app on iPhone now has the ability to schedule the sending of emails. This is great for planning ahead, whether you’re on vacation, busy, want to send off an email at a specific date or time, send a birthday or holiday greeting, time your resignation email perfectly, or an infinite number of other obvious scenarios where the scheduling of an email would be useful.

You can access the email scheduling feature by long-pressing on the send button in any email composition window.

7: Merge Duplicate Contacts

The iPhone finally has a native ability to merge duplicate contacts.

To access this feature, open the Contacts app, and if any duplicate contacts are found, you will have the option to “View Duplicates” visible at the top of the screen. You can then review the duplicates and merge them.

Cleaning up your address book is now easier than ever before, and no longer requires the trick to use a Mac to accomplish the same task.
