However, since both Intel Core i5 5xxx series and Pentium G6950 have been introduced, we now again need to differentiate between the two to see which one is better.
Generally speaking, both the i3 and Pentium systems are identical and have a lot of similarities in terms of features. Despite that, there are still some features that it has got disabled in them. Most importantly, the Hyper-threading feature is unavailable in the Pentium to the Core i3. Therefore, Pentiums cannot do multi-tasking as efficiently as the Core i3 can, which makes them less superior. However, one would clearly understand all this when they compare the price for both. A lower price, like half the price difference of Pentium processors compared to Intel’s Core i3, would indicate fewer features in Pentium.

Intel And How Ai Is Transforming The Pc
I was at Intel’s powerful Israel Development Centre (IDC) recently, and it is a fascinating place. Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s CEO, is positioning IDC as the heart of Intel to address long-term diversity issues.
Israel has a culture where women are treated more equally than most other geographies I have studied, and IDC has an unusually high level of women engineers in senior operational and development roles. One of the ways you effectively break a glass ceiling is to start at the top. And Gelsinger is using IDC as a template for change across Intel, which has significantly, based on my conversations with Intel employees, changed Intel’s culture for the better. In effect, IDC is leading Intel’s renaissance as the company positions for a far better future.
Here are some of the improvements that Intel’s IDC group shared during my visit:
Better video conferencingIntel showcased both improvements in camera resolution and auto-centering. When you are doing a video conference, the quality of the camera has a direct impact on how you are perceived by others. But we all have lighting, centering, focus, and connectivity issues. Using their AI capabilities, IDC demonstrated significant improvements over similar products in both auto-framing and resolution.
Better video quality is not only critical for how you look, but for anything you are sharing. While we are still working in hybrid form, the ability to share what the PC’s camera sees with teammates without requiring a second camera — particularly when you are using a laptop and don’t have a separate camera — could be very important if you do that a lot.
It is interesting to note that Intel went into video conferencing long ago and struggled with video quality. It is fascinating that Intel, decades later, has addressed this endemic issue, and it is working in some of the latest Intel-based products.
Another interesting video conferencing use of AI is better use of the PC’s multiple radios. Not only will the future PC be able to connect to multiple Wi-Fi 6 connections, but also 5G simultaneously. So if you are in a meeting, it can aggregate the wireless connections and get a near optical cable level of performance. Should you lose all but one of those connections, the video will, after a short pause, continue without dropping the call.
Improved privacyAnother use of AI that was demonstrated was the use of Wi-Fi as a proximity detector to better secure the privacy of your PC.
Using Wi-Fi, the PC will be able to tell when you are close to the PC and when you leave, either waking up the PC when you sit down in front of it or suspending and securing the PC when you leave your desk.
This reminded me that when I first started working in the tech industry, I used to go in and play pranks on my boss when he left his PC unsecured. My favorite prank was to load an app that caused the letters on his screen to increasingly fall off the screen, as if there was failing adhesive holding them on. Thinking back, I am surprised I did not get fired for doing that.
But in use, this is cool. When you approach, the PC starts to power up, and in a few seconds, it is ready to log you in. If you have used Microsoft Hello for facial recognition, you are back to work and functioning again without the risk that someone had access to your stuff while you were away. It is impressively quick.
In the marketplaceWhile these camera capabilities have already appeared on some of Microsoft’s Surface products and HP’s Dragonfly line, most of these features will appear in the next generations of laptop and desktop PCs.
And this is only the beginning, as Intel and others continue to develop AI capabilities that will become more prevalent in PCs, like being able to automatically author papers from outlines and create unique images by simply describing what you want to create.
What Intel is doing is just the beginning of applied AI in PCs. What’s to come from Intel and other vendors will be even more amazing.
Three Contact Manager Apps Better Than The One That Came With Your Phone
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: your smartphone’s contacts app isn’t the best contact manager around. A wide variety of third-party apps is available, making it easier than ever to keep track of all those names and numbers. And just like your list of contacts, these apps are constantly being updated—some of them much improved since last time I looked at them.
FullContact is much more visually appealing than your phone’s stock contacts app.
FullContact doesn’t look like the Cobook Contacts app I tried out last summer, nor does it act much like it. So I was very surprised to find out that it is, technically, the evolution of that app.
FullContact previously was a Web-based contact manager. The company behind that product acquired Cobook and worked that app’s mobile functionality into FullContact’s feature set. The result is a well-designed mobile app with the power of a desktop client.
You can sign up for FullContact on your iPhone, iPad or on the Web. (An Android version is in the works.) Once you’re logged in, you can add contacts from Facebook, Google, iOS (including iCloud) and Twitter. FullContacts pulls all of those contacts together, adding social media profile pictures (which, alone, makes the app so much more visually appealing that the stock iOS app), and cleaning and de-duping your contact list.
FullContact does this automatically, which may be concerning to some users. I was hesitant to hand over control, but I found the app surprisingly effective at cleaning up my contact lists. I still had a couple of duplicate contacts left, but I liked that it didn’t automatically merge contacts when it wasn’t sure.
FullContact also syncs your contacts across your devices. It includes a social feed option, so you can see your contacts’ recent posts, and a contact history, so you can see the last times you were in touch. All of these are very useful when you’re about to reach out to a professional contact.
FullContact is available for free, in a Basic version that allows you to store up to 5,000 contacts, a two-way sync with Google every 24 hours, and 10 free Business Card Transcriptions (this is when you take a picture of a business card, and FullContact has a real person transcribe that card and send it back to your phone as a contact). The $10-per-month Premium version allows up to 25,000 contacts, real-time syncing with Google, and 50 Business Card Transcriptions per month. Both versions allow you to purchase extra transcriptions as needed.
PureContacts is simple and sophisticated, but it’s not truly a full-fledged contact manager.
PureContact is very different from any other contact manager I’ve tested. Depending on how you intend to use it, that could be a very good or a very bad thing.
PureContact values quality over quantity, and because of that, it’s best thought of as a favorites app, not a full-fledged contact manager. If you’re going to be using it to stay in touch with a select group of people, it’s incredibly handy. But if you’re looking for an app to manage hundreds of contacts, this is not the app for you.
That’s because you have to add all of your contacts manually. Unlike most contact managers, PureContact doesn’t scour your various address books and services for people with whom you’ve been in touch. Instead, it accesses your phone’s (Android or iOS) address book and lets you select who you’d like to add.
All of the contacts you choose are given their own circle, which you can tap or swipe to access or take action. PureContact lets you assign actions to behaviors, such as a right, left, up or down swipe, or a double tap. You can have the app e-mail your contacts on a right swipe, but call them when you double tap. I love how you can personalize these actions in a way that makes sense for you.
I also like PureContact’s simple, sophisticated design. It’s clutter-free and easy to use. At 99 cents, it’s also very affordable. Still, that price tag may be hard to justify when the app is simply serving as a souped-up version of the “favorites” function your phone likely already offers.
CircleBackCircleBack finds updated information about your contacts and lets you choose which changes to apply.
CircleBack is a micro-manager’s dream come true—and I mean that in a good way. Like FullCircle, it connects to various sources, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Outlook, and imports your contacts into one central location. It also has a Web version, and syncs information across various devices.
Like FullContact, CircleBack analyzes your contacts, looking for errors and duplicates. But unlike FullContact, CircleBack puts the work of fixing the errors it finds in your hands. This isn’t hard work, however, and it’s a level of control that many users will appreciate.
CircleBack’s Dashboard displays information on how many of your contacts need updates, whether that’s a new phone number or a change of title, how many are missing key details (email address, phone number, complete name, or company), and how many are potential duplicates. You can choose to apply as many or as few fixes as you’d like.
This Is Why Mars Is So Much Smaller Than Earth
One of the main effects of Mars being smaller than Earth is that its gravity is different. Gravity there is around one third the strength of gravity on Earth, because there is less mass attracting things to its surface. This can be useful for exploration in some ways – for example, the Ingenuity helicopter is able to fly there in part because the lower gravity makes it easier to get off the surface (via Digital Trends). But it causes problems in other ways, like making the atmosphere very thin.
The atmosphere on Mars is just 1% of the density of the atmosphere on Earth, and it is mainly composed of carbon dioxide so it isn’t friendly to humans. If humans ever do set foot on Mars, they’ll need to stay in spacesuits or in sealed habitats at all times. Because of the low gravity, Mars cannot hang on to its atmosphere and it has lost atmosphere into space over time (via NASA).
This might also be what happened to Mars’s water. Astronomers are confident that there was once liquid water on Mars, billions of years ago, as we can see evidence of flowing water in rock formations on its surface (via ESA). But now Mars is dry and barren, with basically no liquid water on its surface and only ice at its poles and under its surface.
Experts are still debating exactly how long the water was there and what happened to it, but a leading theory is that Mars once had a water cycle similar to Earth’s (via Max Planck Society). Water on the surface was hit with the sun’s rays and evaporated up into the atmosphere. But once it reached the atmosphere and splits into hydrogen and oxygen, the planet’s lower gravity meant that some of the lighter hydrogen was lost into space. Over time, this meant there was less and less water on the planet.
Mars’s relatively low mass may also play a part in one of its strangest and most distinctive features: The global dust storms which can periodically cover the entire planet. According to NASA, these global dust storms happen every few years and have so far only been observed on Mars. Mars is the dustiest place in the solar system, and because of the low gravity it is easy for these small particles to be picked up by the wind.
We’re still not sure exactly how a dust storm can spread across an entire planet, but weather instruments on the Perseverance rover are studying the weather there to try to learn more (via Digital Trends). And the story of Mars’s size and development isn’t only a matter of history, as it directly affects exploration there now. Mars’s dust could be one of the major obstacles to exploring it, as dust can damage delicate electronics and cover over solar panels, as happened with the rover Opportunity which lost communication in 2023.
If we want to explore Mars more in the future, we’ll need to find ways to address issues like how to design machines which can cope with the dust and how to build spacesuits which can keep astronauts there safe.
