KB4517389 causes Critical Error, Search bugs, and more

Microsoft has just released the October 2023 Patch Tuesday updates and they include a lot of security improvements.

Besides the security updates in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, there are also many fixes and some known issues that are still unresolved.

Strange enough, there’s nothing from Adobe and some users are intrigued by that:

Relative small patch Tuesday, and nothing from Adobe

Amongst the Windows 10 versions that received updates, Windows 10 v1903 seems to be the one that is currently affected by the above mentioned unresolved issues and also by some new ones.

KB4517389 causes Critical Error

Some users are complaining that after installing the KB4517389 on their PC’s, they can’t use the Start Menu and encounter a Critical Error:

KB4524147 originally caused a critical error when using Start Menu AND it prevented my printer from printing. The latter was because of some mess up with the print spooler. I uninstalled KB4524147 and BOTH problems disappeared. This morning, I updated with KB4517389. The printer seems to work, BUT I receive a critical error when using the Start Menu.

The problem doesn’t seem isolated, as other users reported it on Reddit:

Off to an inauspicious start… KB4517389 broke my W10 1903 test VM. After installing, I get “Critical Error. Your start menu isn’t working.” Rebooting doesn’t change, but uninstalling the patch gets it back.

For now, there isn’t an official resolution. The only thing that seems to work is to uninstall the update.

Also, if you didn’t updated yet and want to avoid similar bugs and issues, you can block the update.

Printer drivers issue

As we already know, Microsoft has released a silent update on October 3rd to solve an issue with printer drivers. Supposedly, the issue was solved then.

Again, with the release of the October 2023 Patch Tuesday updates, the tech giant confirmed that the issue was solved:

Addresses an issue with applications and printer drivers that utilize the Windows JavaScript engine ( chúng tôi ) for processing print jobs.

Despite that, some users are still encountering the problem:

Tested on one computer, still broken. Edit: Removing KB4524147 / KB452148 before installing the October cumulative update seems to work

For now, the only workaround is to remove KB4524147 / KB452148 before installing the October Patch Tuesday updates.

Search is still not working for some

Windows Search is causing problems for a lot of Windows 10 users. The problem was first reported months ago, and it’s still not working for some, despite Microsoft addressing it several times.

Here’s what one user says:

will test on if Windows Search works and report back EDIT: it doesn’t EDIT: it doesn’t and it might be because I have VMware Pro 15 apparently.

If you encounter the same issue, besides uninstalling the update, there is another unofficial workaround.

Expert tip:

If you can’t view/copy in the AppRepository folder, edit the folder permissions to authorize yourself. As we already said, this is an unofficial workaround, but it worked for some.

Give it a try, as it might work for you, too.

Other users are reporting problems with their peripherals after the update:

After updating to the 1903 i have experienced an issue with my mouse cursor. It started when i tried to load any page on my browser and when gaming (Football Manager 2023). The cursor at some points just jumps or skips. Dont know chúng tôi cpu spikes or any spike of any kind. i kind of fixed it when i updated some drivers on device manager but then another cumulative update came a week ago and the issue started again. i reinstalled windows to the 1903 build and nothing changed.

If you bump into the same issue, don’t worry. We’ve already dealt with this problem. Follow the simple steps from this guide and you’ll get rid of the problem in no time.

Bluetooth problems

Connectivity issues are not that uncommon when it comes to Windows 10 updates. But some users claim that the latest KB4517389 broke their Bluetooth all-together:

This can happen if files get corrupted and Bluetooth gets reassigned as a USB controller. There isn’t yet a confirmed solution for this problem, but there are a couple of things that you can try:

Update that certain USB driver in Device Manager.

Update your drivers and your BIOS.

Update the Bluetooth driver from the manufacturer’s website.

Uninstall the Bluetooth driver and let Windows install the default driver.

If you don’t know how to update your BIOS, check out this awesome guide and get the job done without any problems.

Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 not working properly

As we already mentioned, connectivity issues are not that uncommon after an update, but they usually get resolved pretty quickly. That’s not the case with Qualcomm Atheros AR9485, as some users reported:

Devices with Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 experience problems with WiFi dropping and network adaptor needing to be reset. Microsoft are aware there is a problem with their Windows 10 updates since their 1607 upgrade, yet seem incapable of rectifying the problem.Their latest update is showing same problem.

This is a pretty old problem, but we already dealt with it. You can try the steps in this dedicated guide, as it may help you solve the connectivity issues quickly and easily.

Besides these problems, there are also a lot of installation issues and boot errors affecting the latest KB4517389. Check out this article to find out more info about that.

Also, Microsoft Edge seems to stop working on some Windows 10 PCs after updating to KB4517389. If you want to know more, take a look at this dedicated article.

Have you encountered any other issues after updating to KB4517389?

Frostpunk Bugs: Game Won’t Launch, Crashes, Fps Drops And More

Frostpunk bugs: game won’t launch, crashes, FPS drops and more

Survival games are really trending right now. For example, PlayerUnknowns Battleground has tens of millions of players on both PC and console. If you’re looking for a less crowded game where you can explore the environment at your own pace, you should try Frostpunk.

Frostpunk is society survival game that challenges you to manage the citizens and the infrastructure of the last city on Earth. Your main goal is to ensure the survival of the society and find ingenious solutions to respond to all the challenges that come along.

Speaking of challenges, one of them is represented by the technical issues that you may encounter on launch and during the gameplay. In this post, we’re going to list some of the most frequenly encountered Frostpunk issues, as well as their corresponding workaround whenever available.

Frostpunk game bugs 1. Game won’t launch

Many gamers are still struggling to launch Frostpunk. The game closes down shortly after launch without any error code or sometimes the launch process simply freezes.

If you’re experiencing this issue, make sure that you’re running the latest Windows 10 updates on your computer. Also, launch the game as an administrator and disable Steam overlay.

2. Frostpunk has stopped working

The game may also crash all of a sudden with the following error message: ‘Frostpunk has stopped working‘. Here are some workarounds that you can use to fix this problem:

— RELATED: Full Fix: Games Crash in Windows 10, 8,1, 7

3. Low FPS issues

Unfortunately, the game is completely unplayable for many gamers due to FPS drops.

The average size of the city is down FPS to 30-20, play is getting really bad. It’s on GTX 1080 and i7700

Players confirmed that using medium settings and disabling global illumination can raise FPS to a decent level. If the issue persists, you can check out the following troubleshooting guides:

Game Fire is a game booster that will get rid of low FPS, crases, freezes, lags, and other issues while playing. Download it now (free) for a better gaming experience.

4. Achievements won’t show up

Some gamers played Frostpunk for several hours but noticed their achievements are nowhere to be seen.

After several hours of play I realized that I recived no achievement pops. Sure enough its not recording. While this doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of the game, it would be nice for it to register.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any workaround suggestions for this problem but you can contact 11 bit studios support and give them more details about this issue.

5. Cut scene stuttering

Gamers also complained about cut scene stuttering issues. The frames freeze for a second, then the next ones play for a few more seconds only to stop again soon after.

So I just bought the game and I don’t know if it is the game or not, but the game cutscenes keeps stuttering, It stops for a sec and does some more frames then stops again, the game itself runs fine but it is annoying

Here are a few workarounds that you can use to fix this problem:

Disable anti-aliasing

Disable custome resolution

Update your graphics drivers

Alcohol Intolerance Causes Symptoms Diagnosis And Prevention

Alcohol intolerance is a condition that is characterized by symptoms after consuming the alcohol such as facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, and increased heartbeat due to the absence of the enzymes the products of the alcohol which can be genetic or because of the allergy to the some of the products present in the alcohol.

Some of the products present in alcoholic beverages especially in wine and beer such as sulphites, chemicals, and grains can cause intolerance to the alcohol. Some of the preservatives used in alcoholic beverages and histamine are also known to cause alcohol intolerance. Individuals having a previous allergic history such as asthma, hay fever, and allergic rhinitis are more prone to develop this.

Diagnosing and treating alcohol intolerance is important as it can cause a severe skin reaction, weak pulse, and even can affect breathing. It is not a life-threatening condition. Antihistamines and steroids can be used for allergic reactions and there is no treatment other than avoiding the alcohol itself.

Alcohol Intolerance: Causes

The important causes of alcohol intolerance include −

Alcohol intolerance is mainly considered a genetic metabolic disorder that occurs due to a genetic mutation of the enzyme required for the metabolism of the products of alcohol

When the alcohol enters the body, an enzyme named alcohol dehydrogenase metabolizes the ethanol and it is converted to acetaldehyde by the liver. Acetaldehyde is a toxic product that is capable of causing damage to the cells

Acetaldehyde is then converted into a non-toxic product acetic acid by the enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase 2. This enzyme which is required is required to convert the toxic product into a non-toxic is genetically mutated and becomes less active or inactive leading to alcohol intolerance

Some of the products present in alcoholic beverages mainly wine and beer such as sulfites, chemicals, and grains. Some of the preservatives and histamine are also known to cause alcohol intolerance.

Alcohol Intolerance: Symptoms

The individual develops the symptoms after consuming the alcohol. The main symptoms of alcohol intolerance include −

Increased heart rate

The feeling of one’s heartbeat

Severe pricking type of headache

Nose congestion

Loose motions

The body feels warm and red

If the patient is suffering from asthma their symptoms increase after intake of alcohol.

Alcohol Intolerance: Risk Factors

There are no particular risk factors for alcohol intolerance but some of the factors can increase the risk which include −

Race: Asian

Individuals having a history of allergies such as asthma or hay fever

People have an allergy to grains and some of the food ingredients

Patients suffering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Smoking and use of tobacco can increase the levels of acetaldehyde

Some of the medicines consumed can increase the severity of the symptoms that occurred

Alcohol Intolerance: Diagnosis

The diagnosis is based on the history of symptom which develops after the consumption of alcohol. There are no laboratory tests required for the confirmation.

One of the tests called as “ethanol patch test” can be done in these cases. In this test, 2 to 3 drops of ethanol are put on a gauze pad and placed on the arm and after about 7 to 10min look for the redness, itching, and swelling

A blood test can be done to see the response of the body’s immune system to alcoholic contents by testing the presence of antibodies.

Alcohol Intolerance: Treatment

There is no definitive treatment for cases of alcohol intolerance.

The only way to avoid alcohol intolerance is to avoid drinking alcohol

Anti-allergic medicines should be given to reduce allergic reactions and reduce the severity of symptoms

Avoid taking any medicines while drinking alcohol as it can cause a severe reaction and increase the severity of the symptoms

Alcohol Intolerance: Prevention

There are no ways to prevent alcohol intolerance, as it is an inherited condition it is seen in all the generations transferring from parents to children.

The only way is to avoid drinking alcohol and if required should be taken in moderate quantity. Taking food before drinking alcohol also helps to reduce the absorption of alcohol.

The severity of the symptoms can be reduced by avoiding taking alcohol with medicines and immediate consulting with the doctor should be done when one notices any symptoms after consumption of the alcohol.

Avoid tobacco and smoking as these also increase the levels of acetaldehyde

Alcohol intolerance is an inherited condition that is transferred from parents to children where the individual cannot tolerate the alcohol to a certain extent because of the absence or less active enzyme required for the metabolism of the alcohol. The individual presents with symptoms such as redness, vomiting, nausea, increased heart rate, loose motions, and weakness after the consumption of alcohol.

Alcohol intolerance is usually a temporary condition and the patient recovers over a shorter duration of time after the development of symptoms but should not be neglected as in some patients it can cause a severe reaction. There are no laboratory tests required to diagnose the condition it is diagnosed based on the history and presentation and development of symptoms after the intake of alcohol.

Patients having alcohol intolerance should completely avoid the intake of alcohol. There are no preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of alcohol intolerance. Some of the above-mentioned measures can be taken to avoid the severity of symptoms.

E Coli Causes Symptoms Diagnosis And Treatment

E. coli bacteria often dwell in the intestines of healthy humans and animals. Most E. coli strains are either innocuous or very briefly cause diarrhea. A few strains, however, might result in vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and severe stomach pains.

E. coli can be spread by contaminated food or drink, particularly raw vegetables and undercooked ground beef. E. coli infections in healthy persons often resolve within a week. A life-threatening kind of renal failure is more likely to affect young kids and elderly individuals.

E. coli: Causes

Just a few E. coli types cause diarrhea. The E. coli O157:H7 strain is a member of a subgroup of E. coli that generates a potent toxin that damages the small intestine’s lining. This may result in bilious diarrhea. When you consume this bacteria, you get an E. coli infection.

E. coli, in contrast to many other bacteria that cause disease, may infect you even if you just consume a little quantity. As a result, eating a hamburger that was just a little underdone or gulping down tainted pool water can both make you sick with E. coli.

Person-to-person contact and tainted food and water are also potential exposure sources.

Unhealthy Food

Eating infected food, such as tainted meat, is the most typical method to develop an E. coli infection.

Beef mince. E. coli bacteria from the cattle’s intestines can contaminate the meat during the slaughter and processing procedure. When ground beef mixes flesh from several animals, there is a higher chance of infection.

Raw milk can be contaminated with E. coli germs from a cow’s udder or through milking tools.

Fields, where fresh food is produced, may become contaminated by runoff from livestock farms. Spinach and lettuce are two vegetables that are particularly prone to this kind of infection.

Polluted Water

Ground and surface water, including streams, rivers, lakes, and water used to irrigate crops, can get contaminated by human and animal waste.

Several E. coli outbreaks have been connected to polluted municipal water sources, even though public water systems utilize chlorine, UV light, or ozone to kill E. coli.

Because many private water wells lack a means of water sanitization, they pose a bigger threat. The chances of polluted water sources are highest in rural areas. After swimming in lakes or pools tainted with feces, some people have also contracted E. coli.

Personal Interaction E. coli: Symptoms

Three to four days following contact with the germs, H7 infections often start. Yet, you might get sick as soon as a day after exposure or up to a week later. Some warning signs and symptoms include the following −

From light and watery to severe and bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, discomfort, or tenderness

Some people experience nausea and vomiting.

E. coli: Risk Factors

Several factors play an important role in the development of chúng tôi which includes −

Age. Little children and elderly individuals are more likely to get an infection-related sickness from E. coli and develop more severe consequences.

Compromised immune systems. Individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those caused by AIDS, cancer treatment medicines, or medications used to prevent organ transplant rejection, are more likely to fall unwell after swallowing E. coli.

Eating particular food items. Unpasteurized milk, apple juice, cider, and soft cheeses made from raw milk are among the riskier meals, along with overcooked hamburgers.

The season. The bulk of E. coli infections occur from June through September, however, it is unclear why.

Lower amounts of gastric acid. E. coli is somewhat defended against by stomach acid.

You may be more likely to get an E. coli infection if you use stomach acid-reducing drugs such as esomeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, and omeprazole.

E. coli: Diagnosis

The diagnosis of the chúng tôi is mainly done based on history and some of the tests may be required for confirmation and to rule out underlying causes

Your doctor sends a sample of your stool to a lab to be tested for the presence of E. coli bacteria to identify diseases brought on by E. coli infection. To confirm the diagnosis and identify particular toxins, such as those released by E. coli O157:H7, the bacteria may be grown.

E. coli: Treatment

The treatment is based on the severity of the symptoms. No existing therapies can eliminate the infection, lessen symptoms, or stop the consequences of E. coli-related illnesses. Treatment often involves −

Rest fluids to stave off weariness and dehydration

You will be hospitalized if you have a major E. coli infection that has led to the hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially fatal form of kidney failure. IV fluids, blood transfusions, and renal dialysis are all part of the treatment.

To avoid dehydration and to lessen symptoms while you’re recuperating, remember to −

Consume clear drinks. Many clear liquids should be consumed, such as water, clear broths and sodas, gelatin, and juices. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and juices from apples and pears.

Don’t eat specific things. Foods heavy in fiber, fat, or seasoning, as well as dairy products, might exacerbate symptoms.

Consume food. You can resume your regular diet once you start to feel better.

E. coli: Prevention

Some of the measures that can help to prevent E. coli include −

Clean the dishes. Before and after contacting fresh vegetables or raw meat, wash knives, surfaces, and cutting boards with hot, soapy water.

Separate raw food items. Cutting boards for raw meat and other meals, such as fruits and vegetables, should be used separately. Never serve cooked hamburgers on the same dish as raw ones.

Sanitize your hands. After using the restroom, preparing or eating meals, or changing diapers, wash your hands. Make sure kids wash their hands before and after using the restroom, eating, and petting animals.

Consume pasteurized juice, milk, and cider. Even if it isn’t specified on the label, any boxed or bottled juice kept at room temperature is most likely pasteurized. Avoid any juice or dairy products that haven’t been pasteurized.

Thoroughly wash any raw vegetables. Washing vegetables might not completely eradicate E. coli, especially in leafy greens where there are several surfaces for the bacterium to adhere to.

Certain E. coli strains can result in life-threatening food poisoning, but most are safe. A bacteria known as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) is capable of causing serious foodborne illness. Raw milk, undercooked or raw ground beef products, and fecescontaminated produce are the main causes of STEC epidemics.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis Causes Symptoms Diagnosis And Treatment

De Quervain tenosynovitis is a condition in which there is inflammation of the tendon sheath along with the synovial fluid around it mainly affecting the tendon sheaths of the 1st dorsal compartment of the wrist characterized by degeneration and fibrosis of the tendon sheath.

It mainly affects individuals aged between 30 and 50 years. Women are affected up to six times more than men. The condition mainly affects the dominant hand. The condition is caused secondary to excessive use of the thumb and wrist while performing various activities.

The patients mainly present with pain during the movements of the thumb, wrist, and hands. The condition is diagnosed mainly on the presentation of the symptoms and a simple test called as Finkelstein test.

The condition is temporary and can be treated adequately with anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids. Physiotherapy also helps to make the patient feel comfortable. In some cases where the pain is not suppressed, decompressive surgery is preferred.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: Causes

The following are the important causes of developing De Quervain tenosynovitis include −

A direct injury to the wrist or thumb can be caused by falling on the hand or wrist or by repetitive trauma, such as using a hammer or other tool.

Some inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, can increase the risk of developing De Quervain tenosynovitis.

Overuse of the hands such as repetitive motions with the hands and wrists, such as typing, knitting, playing musical instruments, or using a computer mouse. Overuse of the tendons can cause them to become inflamed and painful.

Certain anatomical factors, such as a thickening of the tendons or a narrow tunnel where the tendons pass through, can increase the risk of developing De Quervain tenosynovitis.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: Symptoms

The patient with De Quervain tenosynovitis mainly presents with the following symptoms that include −

The main complaint of the patient is pain on the radial side of the wrist that is worsened by moving the wrist or thumb. Pain aggravates on grasping and raising objects with the wrist.

Sometimes the patient presents with visible swelling over the radial styloid below the thumb.

The tendon sheath of the affected person feels thick and hard.

Tenderness is most acute at the tip of the radial styloid. Pain on touching the affected is present.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: Risk Factors

Several factors play an important role in the development of De Quervain tenosynovitis which include −

People aged between 30 to 50yrs are at risk

Females are at more risk compared to males

Women who are pregnant or have recently given birth are at an increased due to hormonal changes that can lead to swelling and inflammation in the tendons.

Affects the dominant hand as more activities are done by the using dominant hand

Injury due to overuse such as by repetitive tasks that involve overexertion on of thumb, radial and ulnar deviation of the wrist

Patient Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or thyroid disease, or rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk

Women during pregnancy are at increased risk

Activities such as Wringing out wet clothes, Long use of a computer mouse, Use of scissors, and surgical tongs, Texting, and Hammering, Knitting, Lifting heavy objects such as a jug of milk, taking a frying pan off of the stove, or mother lifting a baby out of a crib increases the risk of developing the condition

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: Diagnosis

The diagnosis of the claudication is mainly done based on history and some of the tests may be required for confirmation that includes −

A history of pain during the movements of the thumb and wrist arises suspicion of the disease.

Finkelstein test − The Finkelstein test is a test that help to diagnose De Quervain tenosynovitis. In this test, the patient is asked to make a fist with their thumb tucked inside their fingers. Then the patient is asked to bend their wrist towards their little finger. If this causes pain in the thumb side of the wrist, it is a strong indication of De Quervain tenosynovitis.

Imaging tests − In some cases, imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasounds may be used to help diagnose De Quervain tenosynovitis. These tests can help to rule out other conditions that may be causing the patient’s symptoms, such as arthritis or a bone fracture.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: Treatment

Your doctor may prescribe a conservative or surgical treatment based on the severity of the condition −

Conservative Treatment

The treatment is based on the severity of the symptoms. Treatment mainly aims at reducing pain and helping the individual to restore routine activities that include −

Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs are required to reduce pain and inflammation. It is used in mild cases where the pain is less

Corticosteroid injection is required in patients with significant pain with symptoms lasting for more than 3 weeks.

Physiotherapy is more effective in these patients helping the patient to reduce the pain and restore pain-free movements. Physiotherapy involves −

Immobilization of a thumb spica splint is used to restrict thumb movement so that the first dorsal compartment tendons are at rest.

Cold compression for 10 to 12 minutes over the inflamed area.

Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment may be required in severe cases where the symptom is not reduced with a conservative treatment.

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: Prevention

Some of the measures that can help to prevent De Quervain tenosynovitis include −

Regular stretching exercises can help to keep the tendons and muscles in the hands and wrists flexible and reduce the risk of developing De Quervain tenosynovitis. Simple exercises such as wrist circles, fist clenches, and thumb stretches can be effective.

Avoid repetitive motions while performing repetitive motions with their hands and wrists.

When performing tasks that require hand and wrist movements, it is important to use proper techniques to reduce the risk of injury.

Maintaining proper ergonomics when the individual performs repetitive tasks such as adjusting the height of the keyboard and monitor, using a comfortable and supportive chair and taking frequent breaks to stretch and rest the hands and wrists.

Eating a healthy balanced diet, getting enough rest, and exercising regularly will help to reduce the risk.

De Quervain tenosynovitis is an inflammatory condition that is characterized by the inflammation of the tendon sheaths and the synovial fluid covering the tendon sheaths of the 1st dorsal compartment of the wrist making the person feel pain during the movements of the thumb and wrist affecting the regular activities requiring the thumb and wrist. The condition is confirmed by the Finkelstein test.

It is a mild condition that is not life-threatening. It can be treated adequately with NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and physiotherapy. In patients where conservative treatment is not effective, decompression surgery is recommended.
