Cat S62 Pro rugged Android phone gets a US release price
Cat Phone’s ruggedized S62 Pro smartphone has arrived in the US, offering a tougher option if you’re prone to dropping devices or smashing screens. Announced last year, the new Android handset packs midrange specifications into a seriously resilient casing, without necessarily looking like a rubber brick at the same time.
On the front there’s a 5.7-inch display running at 1080p resolution, while inside there’s a Snapdragon 660 chipset paired with 6GB of memory and 128GB of storage. It’s running Android 10 out of the box, with an Android 11 update in the pipeline and three years of security patches.
There’s a 4,000 mAh battery – smaller than the 4,500 mAh pack in the old Cat S61, but Cat says it should still last for 1-2 days of general use – and a microSD slot. No 5G, but you do get 4G LTE Cat 13, and unlike the old phone the S62 Pro has a fingerprint sensor. For the camera, the 12-megapixel sensor is from Sony’s line-up, with an f/1.8 lens.
Of course, that’s not the only sensor the phone puts on the back. There’s a new FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal camera sensor, with four times the number of thermal pixels – 19,200 versus 4,800 – compared to the old Cat S61. That helps the Cat S62 Pro with a 30-percent improvement in thermal camera sharpness, and a 10-percent wider field of view.
A new MyFLIR Pro app includes “hottest” and “coldest” markets, image annotation, isotherms, and custom alarms. It can also be used to highlight particular areas of interest, and then produce a PDF for distribution. By tweaking the MSX and VividIR image processing it’s possible to pull out a lot more detail from the end shot, Cat says.
While offering a bigger screen than the S61, the S62 Pro is actually slightly thinner and lighter. It complies with MIL-SPEC-810H, for thermal ranges between -25°C (-13°F) to 55°C (131°F) for up to 24 hours, resistance to humidity and salt mist, and Category 4 vibration testing. Cat says you can drop the phone repeatedly, onto steel, from almost six feet up, and it’ll survive: even if it lands on the side or a corner.
There’s IP68 and IP69 ingress protection from water, with the S62 Pro handling up to 1.5 meters of water for 35 minutes, and the display gets Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. Cat even recesses that toughened glass between a protective ridge, for even more resilience, and the body is fully settled with waterproof connectors, a metal frame, and non-slip rubberized TPU rear housing.
If it’s COVID-19 or similar you’re worried about, you can wash the S62 Pro with soap and detergents, alcohol wipes and other disinfectants, and it’ll even hold up to bleach and other common chemicals.
Clearly, this isn’t the phone for everybody, but if your life or work takes you into challenging environments – or you’re just plain clumsy – then the Cat S62 Pro seems to offer the benefits associated with ruggedized devices yet without a lot of the chunky, ugly drawbacks we’ve come to assume of them. It’ll be available in April 2023 in the US, unlocked, priced at $699.
Samsung Unveils Carmode For Galaxy, New Smartthings Hub, Sleep
IFA, the world’s leading trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, is running from September 4 to 9 in Berlin. Ahead of the big event, Samsung Electronics has unveiled some rather interesting gadgets, including its own version of CarPlay, a sleep analysis accessory, its first 4K Blu-ray player and more.
More than anything, the company is betting big on so-called Internet of Things, a common moniker denoting software platforms powering smart devices that tap into the power of the cloud to achieve interoperability and rich data sharing.
To this extent, the South Korean giant last year purchased an open-platform smart home company, called SmartThings. Following the acquisition, SmartThings today unveiled its very first new product, a hub for the connected home that connects to cameras to monitor and protect your home.
CarMode for GalaxyThink of it as Samsung’s version of Apple’s CarPlay or Google’s Android Auto platforms. CarMode for Galaxy was designed to enhance driving experience. Basically an in-car dashboard app compatible with the Galaxy lineup, it features a dedicated user interface with large icons for accessing functions like navigation, music playback and more.
The system uses the MirrorLink protocol to connect to your car and uses Samsung’s S-Voice personal assistant for voice input, intelligent search and more. It even sports an always-listening “Hi Galaxy” mode that allows you to issue spoken commands without you taking your eyes off the road for even a split second.

For the time being, CarMode lacks a dedicated app store for third-party apps. It launches this Friday and Samsung partnered with German car maker Volkswagen on a more feature-rich app for its vehicles, called Car-Net E-Remote.
SleepSenseThis sleep-tracking gadget can be placed under a bed’s mattress to monitor your heart and respiratory rate, including movements during sleep, using its built-in real-time contactless sensor.
As an Internet of Things accessory, it connects to Samsung appliances, the new SmartThings hub and third-party devices allowing it to, say, automatically turn off the television, and adjust the heating or air conditioning for a perfect sleep environment.
The device includes an alarm clock that determines the best time for you to wake up, and then wakes you up gradually. A companion mobile app provides an at-a-glance overview of your scores and reports, including a summary of your sleep activity with your sleep score mapped against the average data for your age.
The app provides recommendations on improving the quality of your sleep by taking into account each individual’s metabolism, all in the service of helping you achieve the recommended seven to nine hours sleep a night. The company claims the SleepSense delivers an accuracy of up to 97 percent.
SmartThings hubMarking its first product launch as part of the Samsung family, this device incorporates a plethora of wireless protocols to connect a range of smart sensors around your home, up to 200 of them at once.
Featuring a new design and an improved processor, the SmartThings hub now process video feeds from home monitoring cameras directly on the device (launching in beta), bypassing the cloud.
The redesigned SmartThings mobile app for iOS and Android allows you to watch any video feed live. During an unexpected event, such as motion by the front door, the video that requires your attention gets uploaded to the cloud.
The device has a built-in battery to ensure smooth operating for up to ten hours in the event of a power outage. It’s also able to process some automations locally, meaning it can operate without an Internet connection.
It works with Amazon’s Echo connected speaker with Siri-like personal digital assistant, as well as with D-Link and Samsung-made home monitoring cameras. The hub integrates with other products from Honeywell, Bose, First Alert, Osram, Schlage and many more.
Additionally, it supports a bunch of smart sensors like moisture and motion sensors, smart switches and so forth. Last but not least, SmartThings is now integrated with GitHub, where developers can contribute their code.

In addition, Samsung’s upcoming Ultra HD Smart TVs will support the new HDMI 2.0a format which allows HDR input. The device’s pricing and availability will be announced at a later stage.

Us Special Forces Will Soon Get Support From A Rugged New Aircraft
On August 1, Special Operations Command (SOCOM) announced that the next plane in its inventory would be a single-engine prop aircraft. SOCOM will buy up to 75 AT-802U Sky Warden planes, built by L3Harris Technologies and Air Tractor. These planes will support special operations forces, like Delta Force or Navy SEALs, as they fight irregular wars.
The name of this program is “Armed Overwatch.” The contract announcement says it “will provide Special Operations Forces deployable, affordable, and sustainable crewed aircraft systems fulfilling close air support, precision strike, and armed intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, requirements in austere and permissive environments for use in irregular warfare operations in support of the National Defense Strategy.”
Irregular warfare is a broad term that is easier to define by what it doesn’t include. Regular warfare is when the uniformed soldiers of one nation fight the uniformed soldiers of another. These conflicts usually involve the whole range of conventional military forces, from rifles through tanks and artillery to fighter jets and bombers. Irregular warfare, by contrast, involves fighting against insurgencies, rebellions, and tracking down people linked to terror operations. It can also involve helping other countries’ militaries do the same.
For example, in 2003, the US invaded Iraq with a conventional war, which lasted until the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s military. Armed resistance afterwards to the American military and to the new government of Iraq became irregular warfare, and to this day the US deploys forces in the country to assist in training Iraq’s military in irregular warfare.
For SOCOM’s purposes, a plane that can support special operations forces doesn’t need to survive in a sky filled with hostile fighter jets or when the enemy brings dedicated anti-aircraft vehicles to the battle. Instead, what is most important is that the plane can fly easily, shoot what it needs to shoot, as well as take off and land if need be on rough runways and cleared fields, instead of dedicated airbases.

Those characteristics, that rugged versatility, are likely why the Sky Warden won out over the four other planes SOCOM considered for the contract last summer. The contract initially awards $170 million, or about the price of two F-35A stealth jets, with a ceiling of $3 billion for the full fleet. L3Harris said in a statement that production will begin in 2023, for the initial lot of six Sky Wardens.
“We want to deliver game-changing, modular solutions to U.S. special operators for their hardest missions, and Sky Warden does just that,” Christopher E. Kubasik, CEO of L3Harris, said in a statement.
“Armed Overwatch” is a role that involves both scouting for targets and attacking enemies on the ground. While SOCOM considered planes that could also perform a transport role for the special operators, the Sky Warden is built to scout and to attack. To that end, the Sky Warden can carry over 8,000 lbs of payload while armored. The wings can carry a range of weapons, from 500-pound bombs to small missiles to sensor pods, and the center of the aircraft can host two heavier systems as well. The wing station can fit a gun, like a .50-caliber machine gun or a 20mm cannon. With a full load of sensors and weapons, the plane can take off on a runway of just 1,400 feet, and it can land on one 1,200 feet long. The tandem cockpit seats two pilots.
The AT-802 (note the lack of a “U,” which denotes the latest variant, the AT-802U, that SOCOM is getting) first flew in 1990, where its rugged airframe and heavy payload capacity made it an ideal crop duster. As a crop duster, the plane was used to spray crops on counter-narcotics missions, an action that sometimes saw the planes shot at by farmers defending their crops. “Years of coca crop eradication missions in South America resulted in the development of lightweight composite ballistic armor for the AT-802U cockpit ‘bathtub’ and engine compartment,” notes the Air Tractor page for the plane.
In other words, SOCOM is getting a plane with crop duster origins, and one that can be used for the military missions of special operators. The Sky Warden is armored against attack, provided the enemy it is facing is armed mostly with small arms, like machine guns and rifles.
This was a concern 13 years ago, when the Air Force announced a plan to purchase 100 such planes in 2009. Skeptics of the Air Force’s 2009 plan for a light attack plane similar to the Sky Warden noted at the time that insurgent forces could get portable and effective anti-air weapons that could threaten the aircraft. With the award of the Armed Overwatch contract this week, former Popular Science contributor Peter W. Singer, now a fellow at New America, revisited an article he wrote that year, tweeting, “And note, since writing that in 2009, the cropduster [Sky Warden-style plane] has not improved, while both the enemy capabilities and the unmanned alternative has obviously drastically improved.”
As nations like Germany and the United States offload old anti-air missiles to Ukraine for use in its war against Russia, the possibility exists that some of these weapons will make their way onto the black market. While old anti-air missiles may struggle against modern jets or be overkill for modern drones, they are perfectly suited for attacking planes like the Sky Warden. As SOCOM makes a big bet on how to fight irregular wars from the sky, it is also gambling that the enemies it finds will lack anti-air weapons, even as war makes those weapons more available.

Microsoft is introducing new features in your phone app that lets Windows users launch the most recently used apps on their Android phones.
This new Your Phone feature relies on the existing remote Apps capability that allows owners of select Samsung Galaxy phones to access their mobile apps on their Windows PCs.
The new feature is said to be a step towards Apple’s handoff feature that lets users use one app and continue where they left on another device.
Microsoft is rolling out a new feature in its Your Phone app that lets Windows 11 users launch their most recently used applications on their Android devices.
The company is testing the new functionality, which doesn’t require any additional effort on the part of the user to set up, with Windows Insiders and it leverages the existing Apps capability already built into several select smartphones.
Your Phone allows users to mirror their Android phones directly to their PCs to respond to texts, notifications, and photos from their mobile devices. The app already lets users mirror multiple apps to a PC while they work on other tasks.
How it worksIn Windows 11, the mouse cursor can be placed over the Your Phone icon in the notifications area of the taskbar to access the recent Apps feature.
With the new Recent Apps feature, your recently used Android apps will appear on the Your Apps page of the Your Phone app.
This change makes it easy to quickly access an app, making it possible for you to switch from your desktop to your mobile device
Microsoft plans to roll out this new Continuity feature to everyone over time and expects that everyone will have access within weeks.
Devices usedThe new feature is currently only supported by select Samsung Galaxy devices that support the exclusive link to the Windows feature that can be accessed from the quick panel menu.
Link to Windows was developed by Microsoft and Samsung, and it allows users to sync their phone with their Windows 11 PC without using a USB cable.
If you don’t want to open an app, you can also just drag and drop files between your phone and PC by simply tapping and holding on to a file you want to transfer.
Apple’s handoff featureMicrosoft’s implementation is more sophisticated than Apple’s Handoff feature. It works with any app on all three platforms. Microsoft’s solution will open the native app that supports Handoff when it transitions from an iOS device to a Mac or vice versa.
This isn’t quite as handy as Apple’s solution since it doesn’t work with native iOS apps. You can only access apps on your Mac or Windows computer or through Chrome browsers on a Mac and Windows PC.
One nice thing about this new Continuity feature is that it works across multiple devices. If you pick up where you left off on one device, you can continue using that app on another device.
The big caveat here is that this new recent app feature only works with specific phones right now. Microsoft says support for more Android phones running will be added soon.
The Your Phone app will require an active internet connection and Bluetooth connection between your phone and PC to make this work.
The experience isn’t as seamless as Apple’s handoff feature where you could easily switch from one device to another without launching individual apps.

Today things are officially off and running with CES 2013, and what better way to start some announcements from HP then with a host of new Windows 8 PC monitors. HP has a slew of 5 new monitor series. They’ll be featuring impressive LED, IPS, and ProDisplay monitors on the showroom floor this week, and we’ve got all the details so read on below to find out more.
We’ll jump right in as they’ve just announced 5 different monitors this afternoon. The biggest of the bunch coming in at 27-inches is the new HP Envy 27 Monitor. This features a beautiful and vivid 27-inch IPS LCD panel with their thin blade bezel design. It’s also protected in edge-to-edge hardened glass for extra gloss and protection. It features built-in Beats Audio stereo speakers, and a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution. The new 27-inch IPS Envy 27 hits the streets February 3rd for around $499.
Next since we’re talking about IPS displays is their new HP Pavilion 20xi-27xi IPS monitors. While not covered in hardened glass like the model above, the xi series features a similar edge-to-edge bezel free design with their blade technology. They’ll come in 4 sizes: 22xi, 23xi, 25xi, and 27xi and all have 1920×1080 Full HD resolution options. You’ll then get support via VGA, DVI-D and HDMI connectivity, while a smaller 20xi offers 1600 X 900 resolution with VGA. The IPS panels ensure 178-degree viewing angles and excellent colors. The new Pavilion xi monitors start at $129 and go to $339 for the 27xi. All available around the end of January.
Then for those on the go HP’s announced their new HP U160 15.6-inch LED Backlit Monitor. This unique display features a built in stand that doubles as a carry case, and is ideal for those on the go needing a portable monitor. Weighing in around 3.4 lbs and measuring only 1.02 inches thin, this should be a great choice for many. It’s expected to be available in January starting at $179 USD.
Next up is the HP x2401 24-inch LED Backlit Monitor (pictured below and also at the head of this article). This is another high end Beats Audio powered monitor, only it is 24-inches and comes with an LED display instead of IPS — so won’t be priced as high as the 27-inch monitor above. The X2401 features an MVA panel, not IPS, but still gives excellent 178 degree viewing angles and extremely inky black colors. This monitor also rocks a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution 5000:1 contract ratio, and comes in a brushed aluminum finish. Oddly HP states it won’t be available until November, but will be priced at $249.
Then last but certainly not least is the new HP ProDisplay LED backlit line. These are more traditional monitors, and come in 18.5, 20, and 21.5-inch inch models. Respective names are P191 18.5-inch, P201 20-inch, P201m 20-inch, and P221 21.5-inch LED Backlit Monitors. These offer 250 nits brightness, 1000:1 contract, 3M:1 DCR, 5ms response time, and 170/160 viewing angles, so not quite IPS quality. These have the always welcomed 35-degrees of tilt adjustability and 90-degree pivot modes for multiple uses. I’d probably snag two P221’s and put them side by side. The new ProDisplay line will be priced at $129-179 based on size.
