Do you have a Windows desktop or laptop that isn’t accepting, or recognizing, its full amount of RAM? For example, Windows 10 Pro might only utilize 4 GB RAM on a 16 GB desktop. If that’s the case, your system resources will be considerably reduced. There are a few reasons why a system’s RAM usage might be somewhat less than what it could be. That could be due to the platform, motherboard or even a setting restricting RAM allocation.

Here’s what to do if your PC won’t recognize RAM Windows OS RAM Limits

The first thing to note is that different Windows editions have varying RAM limits. However, all 32-bit Windows 10, 8 and 7 editions are limited to 4 GB RAM whether they be Enterprise, Pro, Ultimate, etc. So if you add more RAM to a 32-bit Windows OS, the platform isn’t going to accept it. This is how you can check 32 and 64-bit platform details in Windows 10.

Press the Cortana button on the taskbar.

Enter the keyword ‘system’ in the search box.

Select to open the System tab shown in the snapshot directly below.

Windows 10 users can also select About your PC to open further OS details as below.

The listed system type specification tells you whether your platform is 32 or 64-bit. Also note the Installed RAM spec that highlights the usable RAM amount.

You’ll need to upgrade a 32-bit platform to a 64-bit OS to ensure that all your system’s RAM is accepted. A 64-bit Windows 10 or 8 upgrade will ensure at least 128 GB RAM is accepted. The Pro edition of Win 10 supports up to 2 TB (terabytes) of RAM. Note that your desktop or laptop will also need to 64-bit CPU to upgrade to a 64-bit OS.

The 64-bit Windows 7 platforms have lower RAM limits. The 64-bit Windows 7 Basic accepts 8 GB RAM only. You can add up to 16 GB RAM to Win 7 Premium.

Motherboard RAM Restrictions

Aside from Windows, your desktop’s motherboard also has RAM restrictions. A motherboard only supports so much RAM. If you add more RAM to a desktop than the motherboard supports, Windows isn’t going to utilize the surplus amount.

RAM Compatibility

If you’ve installed an extra RAM module, and Windows isn’t accepting it, the module might not be compatible with the motherboard. There are various types of RAM that include: DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 and SDR. For example, a DDR2 motherboard won’t be compatible with a DDR4 RAM module. To determine RAM compatibility, check out this web tool with which you can find compatible upgrades. If you find the RAM isn’t compatible, remove the module and return it to the vendor for a replacement.

Adjust the Maximum RAM Setting in MSConfig

If Windows doesn’t recognize all your PC’s RAM even for a 64-bit platform, it might be the case that the Maximum memory setting is restricting RAM. You can configure that setting in MSConfig by pressing the Windows key + R hotkey and entering ‘msconfig’ in Run’s text box.

Press the OK button to open the MSConfig window in the snapshot below.

Select the Boot tab on the System Configuration window.

Press the Advanced options button to open BOOT Advanced Options as shown below.

Deselect the Maximum memory option there if it’s selected.

Press the Apply button, and restart the Windows OS.

Maybe now Windows will recognize all your laptop’s or desktop’s RAM. Just make sure you check your Windows and motherboard system specifications before adding another RAM module to a desktop.

How To Supercharge Your Pc With A Ram Disk

If you’ve ever wished that you could emulate the performance of a solid-state drive without installing a new piece of hardware, consider creating a new virtual hard drive on your PC that runs purely from RAM, also known as a RAM disk. Setting one up is a little tricky, but the performance benefits (if your system has enough RAM) are worth the effort.

Why would you want to use memory as a makeshift hard drive? Speed, pure and simple. RAM is insanely fast compared with traditional storage, as you can see in the above screenshot comparing benchmarks from a 7200-rpm hard drive (left) and a RAM disk created with Dataram’s RAMDisk utility (right).

Setting Up a RAM Disk: Pros and Cons

RAM disk read/write speeds blow away the speeds of even top-of-the-line SSDs. That makes a RAM disk a wonderful tool for hastening operations in which your machine must read and write a lot of data, such as media encoding or editing large batches of photos.

The biggest everyday performance gains occur when you fully install a program on a RAM disk. For example, moving Word, Excel, Firefox, and Acrobat off of my laptop’s 7200-rpm hard drive and onto a RAM disk resulted in the apps’ loading nearly twice as quickly, rivaling the opening speeds on an SSD—especially when opening large files.

Games run more smoothly from a RAM disk too, although coaxing Steam titles into working with a RAM disk is a bit of a hassle, and storing a whole game in a virtual drive requires a big chunk of memory.

How to Create a RAM Disk

For the purposes of this guide, I chose Dataram’s RAMDisk, because the personal version is free for RAM disks up to 4GB in size. If you need more space, the full version is $19. That’s cheaper than most RAM-disk software, but Primo Ramdisk and other more expensive premium options deliver more robust features. The free utility ImDisk is the only way to fly if you want to make a RAM disk that’s larger than 4GB, but I don’t recommend it as heartily: The command-line interface is more of a hassle, and ImDisk’s virtual drives aren’t as fast as the ones that other RAM-disk software packages create.

Next, go to the Load and Save tab. If you want the software to save your RAM-disk data to a traditional hard drive when you shut down the computer, check the Save Disk Image on Shutdown option and choose a location for saving the disk image. Likewise, check the Load Disk Image at Startup option and make sure it’s pointed to the same location if you want the software to reload your saved data to the RAM disk automatically when you boot the computer.

Remember that doing so can add a significant amount of time to your PC’s startup and shutdown; if you don’t plan on using your RAM disk often or for critical saves, consider leaving those options unchecked. The RAM disk will be wiped every time your PC powers down, but if you’re storing only temporary files on it, that’s hardly a major loss.

Iphone 11 Won’t Connect To Itunes On Mac? Here’s The Fix

Some iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iPad Pro users have discovered that iTunes does not recognize the new iPhone connected to a Mac. Instead, launching iTunes with iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPad Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro connected via USB cable does nothing, and the iPhone does not show up in iTunes, it does not sync, backup, or appear to exist at all within iTunes. This is understandably frustrating if you rely on iTunes for device management, backing up, and syncing iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro to a computer, so this walkthrough will aim to show you how to fix this problem on a Mac.

This guide is aimed at iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPad Pro not showing up in iTunes on MacOS Mojave or MacOS High Sierra. This issue should not appear in MacOS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, or later because iTunes no longer exists in those versions of macOS.

How to Get iTunes Working with iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPad Pro on Mac

Quit out of iTunes, which is not showing iPhone 11 / Pro / Pro Max

Update iTunes to the latest version by going to the  Apple menu and to “System Preferences” and then to “Software Update” and install any available Software Updates for iTunes and MacOS Mojave *

Relaunch iTunes on the Mac

Connect iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max to the Mac with a USB cable as usual

Unlock the iPhone 11 and choose to “Trust” the Mac

Option 2: If the pop-up message asking to install a software update does NOT appear on screen, go to the Finder then pull down the “Go” menu and choose “Go To Folder” and enter the following folder path exactly:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources

Launch the application named “MobileDeviceUpdater.app” in that directory

Agree to “Install” when the alert says pop-up message stating “A software update is required to connect to iPhone – would you like to download and install this update now?”

Quit and relaunch iTunes when prompted to finish the update by choosing “Close Application and Install”

iTunes will relaunch and iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max will now be available to backup, sync, and connect to as usual in iTunes

It’s notable that the iTunes software update required is not available in the typical Software Update sections of macOS.

Additionally, the necessary software update prompt does not always appear in iTunes on its own, or it may be hidden behind the primary iTunes screen, or even on another display or Space if you use multiple screens and desktops on the Mac. Nonetheless, it is necessary to install this software update to iTunes in order for the Mac and iTunes to recognize, use, and connect to iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max.

* Recall that you can ignore MacOS Catalina software update if you don’t want to install that system software version on the Mac.

You can also manually download a new version of iTunes from Apple here but you will still need to update it manually through Software Update or the App Store to the latest version, and then run through the same process outlined above to download and install the auxiliary update to get iTunes to recognize the new iPhones, including iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

For what it’s worth, a similar problem can exist in Windows iTunes for trying to get iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max to show up, connect, and sync in iTunes for Windows PC.

This obviously heavily focused on iPhone 11, but the same tips apply to iPhone 12 and iPad Pro. Basically any new Apple device trying to run with iTunes.
