If we compare the CPU of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 1, there is a vast difference in design and particularly in thermal efficiency. Let’s start with the CPU design first. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was built on Samsung’s 4nm process node, which was not received well due to throttling performance issues, poor battery life, and worse thermals. Qualcomm immediately switched to TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and it saw stable improvements in both performance and thermal efficiency.

With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm has tweaked its CPU configuration. Now, you get a mighty Cortex-X3 core clocked slightly higher at 3.2GHz (same frequency as 8+ Gen 1), 2x Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8GHz, 2x Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.8GHz, and 3x Cortex-A510 cores amped at 2.0GHz.

As you can see, this year Qualcomm has gone with a 1 main + 4 performance +3 efficiency CPU design, which can further be defined as a 1+(2+2)+3 design. In an official confirmation to XDA, Qualcomm said that the two Cortex-A715 and A710 have been added for 32-bit support. Not just that, the A715 core is much more power efficient (~20%) than A710.

If we compare the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with the recent Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the margin reduces to 25% in performance and 10% in power efficiency, which is not bad per se. All in all, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a meaty upgrade over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1/ 8+ Gen 1 and sees a good bump in performance while keeping the thermals in check.

The new Adreno 740 GPU on the 8 Gen 2 delivers 25% faster performance when stacked against SD 8 Gen1’s Adreno 730 GPU. At the same time, it consumes 40% less energy, which is even better. So while playing games on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the device will offer better performance while running cooler and delivering better battery life.

If we compare the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 against the 8+ Gen 1, the performance difference comes down to 15% and power efficiency by 10%. Apart from that, Qualcomm has introduced hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as part of the Snapdragon Elite Gaming feature set. The chipset also adds support for Unreal Engine 5 and Metahuman frameworks.

As for benchmark numbers, we haven’t yet performed synthetic tests like GFXBench and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, so we will reserve our full judgment for now. But on paper, the GPU on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 seems promising and is better than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 by miles.

It also offers 60% better performance per watt while performing INT4 operations. Qualcomm also announced that 8 Gen 2’s new AI engine delivers faster and more accurate results in natural language processing with multi-language translation.

The AI engine on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is also responsible for powering the Cognitive ISP feature, as detailed above. Besides that, the SD 8 Gen 2 packs an improved Sensing Hub with dual AI processors for custom wake words, always-sensing cameras, etc. To sum up, the AI engine on the 8 Gen 2 has received a good performance bump. Most notably, the power efficiency numbers are significantly up. So yeah, the SD8Gen2 brings more AI capabilities than the already great 8 Gen1.

Raspberry Pi 2 Is Six Times Faster Than Pi 1, Supports Windows 10

The Raspberry Pi 2 is now shipping, and you can buy it for the same price as the previous model. And get this: For the first time the mini-computer will support Microsoft’s Windows—specifically, Windows 10 for the development of smart devices and appliances.

Raspberry Pi 2—which will ship on Monday—is an uncased computer that could be held in one hand, with all the important components on one board. The new computer is the same size as its predecessor, which spawned the development of robots, electronics, gadgets and even a Bitcoin ATM.

The Raspberry Pi 2 has a faster CPU and more memory than its predecessor. This could make it a true PC replacement, said Eben Upton, founder of Raspberry Pi Foundation.

“This is obviously fantastic news for Raspberry Pi—in terms of performance it takes us over the line into being a ‘real’ PC you could use for web browsing and productivity applications,” Upton said.

The faster performance will also bring new applications like computer vision to robots, smart devices, drones and other electronics. For example, the extra horsepower will allow the Pi 2 to comprehend images from attached 3D cameras, which was not possible on Pi 1.

The Raspberry Pi 2 could also improve the agility of robots and drones through faster calculations. The computer will also be faster at processing sensor data.

Raspberry Pi 2 will support Linux-based Raspian OS, but Raspberry Pi also worked with Microsoft to bring Windows for the first time to the computer, Upton said. Raspberry Pi 2 will support a customized version of Windows 10 for embedded devices.

Windows wasn’t an option for the original Raspberry Pi in 2012 because the computer was too slow, Upton said.

The speed boost made it feasible to put Windows on Raspberry Pi 2, and Microsoft quickly whipped up a version of Windows 10 for the device, Upton said.

“We’ve always had a good relationship,” Upton said. “Obviously with Pi 1, there was no way we could work together.”

Microsoft has talked about a version of Windows 10 code-named Athens for power-, cost- and size-constrained devices. The OS will be developed for both ARM and x86 processors.

The original Raspberry Pi, which started shipping in 2012 and was priced from $25 to $35, became popular for its sheer versatility. One of its most popular uses was as a home media server with XBMC, with the computer serving movies and shows to TVs. It was also used by programmers to test Linux applications and by students to learn programming.

But Pi’s popularity ended up hurting it the most. Many users clamored for an upgrade to its aging CPU and components. Some users moved over to faster boards with better graphics.

The biggest upgrade in the Raspberry Pi 2 is the CPU, which provides much faster processing power. It has a quad-core ARM Cortex A7 CPU, which is used in many smartphones today. At 900MHz, the CPU speed isn’t blistering, but it will capably run a Linux distribution with a browser and a productivity application like LibreOffice, Upton said.

It has a Broadcom VideoCore IV graphics processor, which will be able to render 1080p video. It will be also possible to play basic 3D games with support for OpenGL ES 2.0. The computer has 1GB of RAM, which is double that of the original Raspberry Pi.

The new computer is also backward compatible with the original Raspberry Pi, which was important to Upton in developing the board. That will ensure electronics made for the original Raspberry Pi will work with the new computer. Applications will also be cross-compatible.

Raspberry Pi Foundation will retain the original models that shipped in 2012, including the $35 Model B+ and Model A+, which is now to be priced at around $20.

¿Sigue Siendo Necesario Instalar Un Antivirus En Windows En Pleno 2023?

Al fin y al cabo, el paquete de seguridad de Windows de Microsoft (también conocido como Windows Defender o Microsoft Defender) ofrece una protección antivirus integrada y no cuesta ni un céntimo. Llevo años usándolo y la última vez que recuerdo haber tenido virus en mi PC fue hace más de una década.

Sin embargo, al intentar confirmar esta creencia, me ha aparecido rápidamente un universo alternativo, lleno de expertos que insisten en que todo el mundo debería pagar por un software antivirus.

Este consejo no proviene solo de las empresas que venden suites antivirus, sino también de sitios reputados que prueban  antivirus regularmente (PCWorld incluido).

Además, casi todos los portátiles que he probado vienen con algún tipo de antivirus de prueba de empresas como McAfee y Norton. Estas empresas pagan a los fabricantes de ordenadores para que los preinstalen, lo que no tendría sentido si nadie terminara comprando los productos, ¿verdad?

Los lectores (y los miembros de mi familia) me han preguntado tanto al respecto que he decidido profundizar un poco más. Lo que he aprendido es que mis suposiciones iniciales eran en su mayoría correctas: la mayoría de la gente puede prescindir de un antivirus extra. Pero eso no significa que todo el mundo deba hacerlo, o que no deba tomar más precauciones por su propia seguridad.

Los argumentos en contra de instalar software antivirus extra

Para empezar la comprobación de mis suposiciones, hice lo más obvio y planteé la pregunta en Twitter: “Si eres un usuario de Windows 10 habitual, ¿necesitas algo más que Windows Security/Defender como antivirus?”.

La respuesta mayoritaria fue que sí, pero con matices.

Justin Duino, de How-To Geek, mencionó un artículo muy útil publicado en su web sobre el tema, que recomendaba usar Windows Security junto al escáner de malware gratuito Malwarebytes.

El periodista Rob Pegoraro también mencionó un artículo de Wirecutter del New York Times que llegaba a la misma conclusión. Otro experto se sumó a la conversación con una recomendación similar.

El razonamiento es sencillo: Windows Security rivaliza con otros programas en la detección de virus. Aunque no siempre ha sido así, la detección de Microsoft ha mejorado considerablemente en los últimos años, hasta el punto de que AV-TEST lo califica regularmente con un 6 de 6 en protección, facilidad de uso y rendimiento, superando la media del sector.

Entonces, ¿por qué algunas personas recomiendan Malwarebytes como una capa adicional de protección? Básicamente, porque es bueno tener otro par de ojos instalado en tu ordenador.

El año pasado, por ejemplo, ejecuté un análisis en Malwarebytes y detectó un conjunto de programas potencialmente no deseados vinculados a mi instalación de Chrome.

Aunque mi instalación de Chrome parecía funcionar bien (sin barras de herramientas sospechosas ni redireccionamientos de búsqueda), esto me convenció para borrar mis datos de sincronización de Chrome, restablecer la configuración y realizar una nueva instalación de Chrome. (Sospecho que era una extensión del navegador que se comportaba mal).

Pero Malwarebytes también tiene sus inconvenientes. Si no tienes cuidado durante la instalación, instalará automáticamente su propia extensión en todos tus navegadores, y la versión gratuita molesta habitualmente con avisos de actualización.

Además, a menos que desactives sus protecciones en tiempo real (que solo están disponibles como prueba durante 14 días para los usuarios gratuitos), anularán el propio antivirus de Microsoft.

En mi caso, puede que vaya a instalar de vez en cuando Malwarebytes para obtener una segunda opinión sobre la salud de mi ordenador, pero por ahora, lo voy a desinstalar también de mi PC.

A favor de tener más protección de antivirus
