The Seagate FireCuda 530 is currently the fastest NVMe SSD on the market. It not only bested the best of the rest in our real-world and synthetic benchmarks, it did so by a healthy margin in several tests. If you can afford it and you can find it, you won’t regret it.

Design and specs

The FireCuda 530 is a 2280 (22mm wide, 80mm long), PCIe 4 x4, NVMe SSD. Seagate, like many other vendors these days, are loath to reveal the fine details of their SSDs, so we’ve taken to stripping off the labels and reading the chip numbers.  The 2TB model I tested has 2GB of SK Hynix DDR4 primary cache. It uses a Phison PS6108 controller, and it stores bits on 176-layer 3D Micron TLC (Triple-Level Cell/3-bit) NAND. Good stuff.

Seagate warns that the surface of the 530 may be hot. That’s under heavy use, of course. This is an image of the 2TB model we tested.

Alas, an SSD as fast as the FireCuda 530 is going to be expensive, but the bigger problem at the time of this review was availability: It was sold out in all capacities at all major online retailers, including Best BuyRemove non-product link and Amazon. A Seagate representative said the company expected the drives to resurface later in August. For some reason, the models with a preinstalled heat sink carry a rather large upcharge. Standalong heatsings average $15. 

The 2TB and 4TB drives are double-sided, while the 512GB/1TB capacities are single-sided. This is a possible consideration if your laptop is super-thin.

Seagate has great faith in the Firecuda 530’s longevity, possibly because the 176-layer NAND might allow greater over-provisioning, or is simply more robust. The drives are warrantied for five years and rated for 640TBW (512GB model), 1,275TBW (1TB), 2,550TBW (2TB), and 5,100TBW (4TB), respectively. TBW stands for TeraBytes Written, i.e. the number of bytes that may be written before the drive wears out.  Ratings over one TB written per GB of capacity, as they are here, are very generous. 

To top off its act of certitude, Seagate will recover data from a failed FireCuda 530 for the first three years of ownership, free of charge. Let’s hope that’s something you never have to utilize. Seagate’s probably counting on that. I kid. Mostly.

Performance

There’s no suspense in this performance section, as the article title and opening paragraph openly tout the FireCuda 530’s performance. That said, we were a bit surprised by the the margin of victory. The 2TB model beat the former champ, the Samsung 980 Pro, in every test save one, and trounced it by a hefty margin in several. That’s got to make Phison and Seagate pretty happy—Samsung hasn’t been knocked off it’s best-of-breed perch very often.

You might say the Firecuda whupped the competition. At least in PCIe 4. PCIe 3 limits the latest NVMe’ SSD’s sustained throughput performance.

Read ‘em and weep, rival vendors. The Firecuda 530 is the fastest drive we’ve tested in both synthetic benchmarks and real-world transfers. 

Shorter bars are better and the Firecuda 530 has a lot of those for our 48GB transfer tests. 

The FireCuda 530 was the first SSD to write our 450GB test file in less than 200 seconds. And according to AS SSD 2 (not shown), it also had extremely low read access times of 0.016 milliseconds. The random access write time from that benchmark was actually high, at 0.16 ms, but that never reared its head in the real-world tests. 

This was a rather astounding 450GB write time, shaving nearly 20 seconds of the previous best. Shorter bars are better. 

In short, the FireCuda 530 is the fastest NVMe x4 PCIe 4 SSD you can buy. Note that the 500GB version is a significantly slower writer than the others, especially over PCIe 4. Seagate provides estimated performance numbers in the FireCuda 530’s data sheet.

I do need to issue our new standard warning: Seagate is a dependable company, but the recent chip shortages and other factors have had some SSD vendor swapping parts–in rare cases, such as with Adata, to negative effect.

The PCIe 3 tests utilized Windows 10 64-bit running on a Core i7-5820K/Asus X99 Deluxe system with four 16GB Kingston 2666MHz DDR4 modules, a Zotac (NVidia) GT 710 1GB x2 PCIe graphics card, and an Asmedia ASM3242 USB 3.2×2 card. It also contains a Gigabyte GC-Alpine Thunderbolt 3 card, and Softperfect Ramdisk 3.4.6 for the 48GB read and write tests.

The PCIe 4 testing was done on an MSI MEG X570 motherboard socketing an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-core CPU, using the same Kingston DRAM, cards, and software. All testing is performed on an empty, or nearly empty drive. Performance will decrease as the drive fills up.

When previously comparing the iPad vs Air or even the iPad vs iPad Pro, I kept saying the camera doesn’t matter much for photography. This is slightly less true when you add the iPad Mini into the mix. The iPad Mini’s smaller footprint makes holding it much more comfortable, and the same applies to using it for taking a photo or recording a video.

Of course, the Mini is still much bigger than a smartphone, so it’s not the best choice as a main camera. I use our family’s iPad Mini mostly for simple shots around the house or for a quick video recording of the kids playing outside. In other words, think of it as a bonus camera but not a main reason for buying.

The iPad Mini launched in September of 2023, while the iPad (10th gen) launched in the middle of October last year. Despite being newer, the iPad is slightly less powerful than the Mini, and that’s reflected in its price tag. The iPad Mini is certainly worth that premium, but be aware the iPad Mini (7th gen) isn’t too far off, so you might want to consider waiting.

Another thing to consider is the storage size. You don’t want 64GB, trust me. The only exception to this is if you plan to mostly use it for browsing and as an e-reader. If you plan to use games and other apps, the space will fill up fast and require you to constantly manage (read: uninstall) less used apps to make room for new ones.

If you want something that has a bigger display, the iPad performs very close to the iPad Mini but gives you more screen real state, a better alignment for its front cam, and support for Apple’s Magic Keyboard folio. Not impressed by the iPad’s performance but want a bigger screen than the Mini? The iPad Air might be a better fit, or even the more expensive iPad Pro.

The Mysterious Object Nasa Is Visiting In 2023 Might Have Its Very Own Moon

MU69 isn’t the most immediately appealing object in our solar system. It’s got a troublesome temporary name, it’s far away—a billion miles past Pluto—and it’s really, really hard to see.

But once you take a closer look, this scrappy object (called a cold classical Kuiper Belt Object) is actually fascinating. It’s a good thing the New Horizons spacecraft is already on its way for a visit.

MU69 is an object in the Kuiper Belt, a disc of asteroids, comets, dwarf planets, and so on orbiting the sun out beyond Neptune. We know very little about this area of the solar system, which is billions of miles beyond our world, and out of reach of many telescopes except in brief and blurry glimpses. New Horizons’ study of Pluto—and now MU69—offers us our closest look at this area of the solar system.

Recent efforts to catch a glimpse of the object revealed that it might once have been more than one body, smushed together over time into something called a contact binary. That’s the leading theory, but it could also be a true binary (two objects bound by gravity but separated by space) or just a single, potato-shaped blob.

But that wasn’t the only thing those early observations revealed. It turns out this strange object might have another sort of companion, too.

Teams of scientists tried three times to watch as MU69 passed in front of a star. On their first attempt on June 3, they saw nothing. On July 10, they saw one odd variation, but it was offset from its expected location by 50 miles. That was strange, but there was another chance coming up a week later. On July 17, the teams got 5 measurements, this time offset from the expected position by 25 miles.

The data was exciting, and it got scientists working on the project—including astronomer Marc Buie, a member of New Horizons’ science team—thinking. “We started wondering if there’s another one out there,” Buie says. The new results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union this week.

If there was a small companion whirling around MU69 in an orbital dance, the center of mass between the two objects would be right where they had expected MU69 to be. That offset object on July 10 was likely the moon, while the glimpses on July 17 were of MU69 itself, which helped inform guesses about its shape.

“It’s almost like we have three objects in one here,” Buie says. “This is going to have a lot of surprises. We really are going to see something that dates back to the beginnings of the solar system.”

Buie, while excited about the possibility, is also careful to emphasize that these results are preliminary. “The story could change next week, but this is our best understanding now,” Buie says.

The moon (if it exists) is likely less than 3.1 miles in diameter, and only about 125-186 miles away from the main body (or bodies) of MU69, which itself is only about 20 miles across. It might orbit every 2-4 weeks.

That’s still just a theory, and the researchers will have just one more chance to take a look at the object before the flyby starts. On August 4, 2023 there will be another occultation when MU69 passes in front of a fainter star. Then New Horizons, fresh off its triumphant observations of Pluto a few years ago, will finally get its first glimpse of the object in September 2023. At that point, researchers will start looking for this theoretical moon—and maybe even others.

“We won’t resolve the object until the week of the flyby. It will go from being a point of light to a new world to be explored,” says Alan Stern, New Horizons Principal Investigator.

We’re going to get a much better look on January 1, 2023 when New Horizons makes its closest approach. Images of the object will be sent back, and the science team hopes to characterize the geology of MU69’s dark, red surface and map its composition. They’ll look for rings, moons, and evidence of an atmosphere or gases.

“We’ve always had in our plans the possibility that there could be moons,” says John Spencer, part of the New Horizons team. They will be able to direct cameras towards any potential moons they might discover in the last few days, as the spacecraft starts its approach.

But first, New Horizons will go into hibernation next week. The final decision of the trajectory for the flyby will be sent out on December 25 next year. There will be three more opportunities to adjust the timing, but at 4 billion miles away, contact with Earth will take some time. The researchers expect that images will start to come back in the early days of the new year in 2023, a belated holiday present for space fans around the world.

Livedrive is distinct in its attention to detail. For instance, installation dialog text can often appear so small and unreadable on my iMac’s 5K display, but Livedrive’s renderings were perfectly legible. Beyond that, the setup overall suffered nary a hiccup, and I was up and running in very short order.

This was the beginning of an approximately 80GB backup, but the speed of 56MBps was maintained almost throughout. Note that this is from San Francisco to the UK.

Nor do you have to worry about the backup’s impact on system performance. Livedrive had backed up 34.5GB of a 250GB backup without my even noticing it. Backups that don’t disturb your computing day are nice.
