Google Classroom is a free virtual meeting place for instructors and students. The platform is very easy to learn for anyone with a Google account, as it closely integrates with the Google apps you know and use every day. Google Classroom is Google’s free e-learning platform where students and teachers collaborate and interact through online training, class assignments, and reciprocal communication. It is designed for both self-paced and live learning. To operate Google Classroom as a school administrator, you need a Google Workspace for Education account.

Combined with other Google apps, such as Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive, Google Meet, and Google Calendar, Google Classroom achieves the same outcome as a physical classroom. Just as in the real world, a teacher can mark attendance, assign homework, grade the assignments, provide feedback on progress, and also interact with parents/guardians.

If you’re new to Google Classroom as a teacher, follow these steps in order to access, create and manage your online classes.

1. Accessing Google Classroom

Accessing Google Classroom is very easy for both teachers and students.

    You will see a disclaimer requiring you to agree that your school/university will sign up for a free Google Workspace for Education account. (Check the FAQs at the end for more information.)

    2. Creating Your Class in Google Classroom

    Give your class a name and provide the section and subject details.

      Next you will see a blank classroom homepage requiring a basic setup. Either select a customized theme or upload a relevant photo.

      If you’re uploading a picture from your computer, it should at least be 800 x 200 pixels. Crop and fit the image so that it can fill up the banner.

        While adding the above classroom details, you’ll see extra options to insert Google Drive files, YouTube videos, and website links.

          Go to “Settings” on the left, where you can set up class notifications and enable or disable them as per your needs.

            Your class is now online. Alternatively, there’s an option to schedule the class launch for a future date.

            3. Managing Multiple Classes

            As a teacher, you can create as many classes as you want, depending on the subjects. Any assignments or schedules you create for one cannot be transferred to the other classroom except by using a “Reuse” option. However, you can manage these multiple classrooms from the top level using a three-dot menu with options such as “Move,” “Copy link,” “Edit,” and “Archive.”

            Once you create a class, students may join. Before your first session, spend some time to explore the most indispensable features of this platform.

            1. Google Classroom “Classwork” Page

            At the top of your homepage, you should see “Classwork,” one of the most important sections. Here you can use a prominent “Create” button to add assignments, quizzes, create topics and lesson plans, and reuse previous posts.

            Assignments: to add an assignment, you must provide a description with additional instructions. You can optionally set up points or grades, schedule a due date and add files. Additionally, you can set quiz assignments and pose questions.

            Reusing Posts: you can access a useful feature called “Reuse post’ that will save you the trouble of typing the same thing for each new lesson. Simply borrow the contents from an existing assignment, quiz or question (in any classroom) and reuse the data with the modifications needed.

            Creating topics: if your course is well-defined, you will need to arrange it by topic. From the “Classwork” menu, create various topics in a sequence. There’s a visible option that allows you to move the topics up and down as needed.

            Creating lesson plans: the topics are further subdivided into lessons. Any new assignment or task you create under a topic is automatically saved as a “lesson.” Therefore, you can easily formulate your lesson plans by topic.

            2. “To Review” Items in Google Classroom

            Once your class starts, you’ll need a central dashboard to view all your students’ work. In the left corner of your Classroom homepage, you can see an icon for “To review” items. This section allows you to review student assignment submissions in one place.

              How To Use Google Meet In Google Classroom

              One of the more powerful kickbacks from the pandemic was the abrupt and unexpected transition to working from home for millions of us.               So when we began seeing Google Meet whenever we logged into our G-suite accounts, it was only a matter of time before Google integrated this secure, smart, and still-in-the-works video calling feature to all its other major holdings as well, Google Classroom being no exception.

              What is Google Classroom?

              Launched in 2014, Google Classroom is a hybrid learning tool designed for educational institutions to manage communication between teachers and students. With this service, teachers will be able to create assignments and distribute them to students of a class for teaching different topics and grade them based on students’ performance.

              With the educational landscape recently evolving towards remote learning, Classroom is also integrated with Google Meet so that teachers can interact with students easily even from the confinements of their homes. Teachers can create quick meet links inside a class to teach a topic, conduct discussions, and host presentations from students without leaving Google Classroom.

              What can teachers do with Google Meet in Classroom?

              Of course, nothing Google does is basic. In fact, we are quite fond of them for the thoughtful little things that end up generating big benefits. For a teacher, Meet will undoubtedly be that small thing that manages to have a big impact. Let’s dive into some of these benefits first.

              Dedicated meeting links for individual classes

              When you’re hosting a class with Google Classroom, you can automatically generate meet links to interact with students in the class and this link will be unique for just this class. Meet links created inside Google Classroom can be used in a recurring fashion, meaning you can use them any number of times in the future as long as it isn’t outdated. 

              Interact with a large number of students

              With Google Meet integration, teachers can host classes to interact with around 100 students (with Education Fundamentals or Education Standard plans) or up to 500 students (with Workspace Education Plus plan). This can be big enough to accommodate multiple classes at the same time when explaining an in-depth topic or to make an announcement for a large number of students. 

              Host live streams with people other than students

              If you want to announce something to students and their parents or the school entirely, Workspace users can turn on live streaming to allow up to 100,000 people to watch a Google Meet call. During a live stream, only teachers and other hosts can interact and have their say while the others get to listen and watch.

              Record live lessons for later

              Meet comes with a Record option which really comes in handy when you’re taking live lessons. You can activate the record option at the beginning of the lesson and Meet will begin recording after taking appropriate permissions and everything. Once the lesson is over, you will receive a media file in the form of a Google Drive link which you can then choose to share with your class.

              Gather attendance

              Teachers on some Workspace Education plans can receive attendance reports for their students in Google Meet. The attendance report will be sent to a teacher’s email and will include information like student’s name (their number if they dialed into the meeting), email address, the time they were present in the class meeting, and more. 

              Moderate students 

              When there’s a disturbance during a meeting or if students are misbehaving in a class meeting, teachers can mute them, turn off their video, or remove them entirely from the call anytime they choose to. 

              Accept student questions

              There is a chatbox that comes as part of the Google Meet interface that really comes in handy to record the questions asked by students. You can even set your meet in presenter view to focus on each question given in the chat and choose to address them accordingly.

              Conduct Q&As and polls

              Some Workspace accounts also come with the ability to conduct Q&As and polls directly from the Meet screen that teachers can use to see student responses on a certain topic in real-time.

              How to create a Google Meet link for your class

              For everything else to happen, the link must be generated and ready in hand. The link is basically a unique code for your meeting that you will be able to share with those whom you want to invite to the Google Meet Conference call. So you need to understand how to generate this link. Don’t worry, it’s fairly easy.

              For Teachers with Google Workspace accounts

              For Teachers with personal Google accounts

              For teachers who are not using Workspace accounts, Google Meet isn’t directly integrated inside Google Classroom. So, teachers using their personal Google accounts will have to use other means to create links for a Google Meet call for a class. If you’re a teacher using a non-Workspace account, here are all the ways you can create a meeting link for Google Meet. 

              From Google Meet

              You’ll now see the Google Meet link appear inside a box on the screen. You can copy this link by tapping on the Copy icon on the right-hand side of the link.

              From Google Calendar

              To create Google Meet links, open Google Calendar on your desktop’s web browser and sign in to the Google account that you use with Google Classroom.

              When this section expands to show all your calendars, select the checkbox adjacent to your Google Classroom classes and uncheck all others. 

              From Gmail

              Now that you know how to create meeting links for Google Meet, you can now add them to your class inside Google Classroom and manage them from within the class by following the steps below. 

              Note: Meet Link generated within Google Classroom is added directly to the class where it was created. So, you don’t need to add them manually inside a class, unless it’s hidden. You only need to add links to a meeting inside Google Classroom if you generated it from elsewhere like on Google Meet, Calendar, or Gmail. 

              Make Meet link visible for students

              Inside Class settings, scroll down and turn on the Visible to students toggle at the bottom of the Manage Meet Link section. 

              The Meet Link should now appear on students’ accounts inside Google Classroom. 

              Reset a Meet link for your class

              If you’re having issues with a meet link you created inside Classroom, you can get a new one by resetting the current link inside the Class Settings. When you reset a meet link, it will no longer be associated with your classroom but it may still be accessible as an independent meeting. 

              Remove a Meet link from a class

              If you have meet links inside a classroom that have gone beyond their scope of usage, they will get outdated. We suggest you upgrade these meeting links in such scenarios as outdated links won’t work as you intended and may grant students host privileges. 

              Add a Meet link to an announcement

              For teachers who don’t use a Google Workspace account, Meet links aren’t generated automatically inside a classroom. Since we already explained how you can create links for Google Meet externally, you will also have to add them manually inside a class you teach. 

              Fortunately, Classroom allows teachers to post announcements for an entire class through Class Streams. Teachers can thus, use this section to post a meeting link they created inside Google Meet, Calendar, or Gmail. 

              To add a Meet Link to an announcement, make sure you’ve copied the Meet Link to your clipboard from where you create a meeting. 

              Add a Meet link to a classwork

              Just like posting meet links inside an announcement on a Class stream, you can also add external meet links to the classwork you give out to your students. Before you do that, you need to make sure that you have copied the Meet link onto your clipboard.

              Now, choose either Assignment or Question depending on where you wish to paste the meet link. 

              How to manage students inside Google Meet classes

              If you’ve created a Google Meet call for your class with Google Classroom, your students will be able to join your class meeting. As a teacher, you can control how your students can access the class video meeting directly from the meeting screen.

              Lock audio/video for a Google Meet call

              While the Mute all feature works to temporarily pause every students’ microphone inside a meeting, students have the freedom to unmute themselves at any time. To avoid constant distractions, you can lock the participants’ audio for as long as you don’t want them to speak by enabling audio lock for all of them. Similarly, you can also prevent participants from turning on their video without your permission by enabling a video lock inside Google Meet. 

              Turn on/off screen sharing

              Disable chat messages

              Teachers can also stop students from cluttering the class’ In-call messages section by turning off chat messages. When this feature is turned off, only teachers will be able to share notes with the class and students won’t be able to interact with each other in the same chat window. 

              Remove participants

              Reset the Google Meet link each time you want to meet with students, this way the older Meet links will not be used unsupervised. You can reset the link for each class from the General Settings of the class.

              If internet speed is slow, turn off your camera to improve video meeting quality. If audio quality is poor, you can use a phone for audio, simply make sure that you have the Meet app on your phone as well.

              To help students who are deaf or hard of hearing, you can turn on captions using the button of the same name that you will be able to locate easily during the call.

              The Best Snapchat Privacy Tips

              Snapchat is hugely popular. Its prevalence means that if you’re not careful, you’re bound to get Snaps from random people, invites from folks you don’t know, chat requests, users spamming you to increase their Snapchat score, and maybe even the occasional call.

              That is, unless you protect your privacy on Snapchat. There are several settings you can enable or disable to lock down your Snapchat and effectively prevent all the above. You just need to know where in your settings to look.

              Beyond Snapchat’s settings are general privacy reminders that you should adhere to, like knowing how to use Snapchat so that you don’t accidentally send the wrong person a private Snapchat or post something to your Story that you intended to send to an individual.

              Change Snapchat Settings

              There are several privacy-related settings you should adjust to your preference and comfort level. They’re super easy to access and can be turned on or off at any time if you decide to change your mind about them later.

              To change your Snapchat settings, open the app and tap your profile image at the top left. Then, use the settings/gear button on the top right to list all the Snapchat settings you can tweak.

              Protect Your Basic Details

              Your full name and birthday might be listed in your settings, and if they are, anyone who can see you on Snapchat can see it too.

              While these tiny facts about you might not seem like a security risk right off the bat, knowing the date you were born and your last name makes it rather easy for someone to research you online and dig up even more information about you, such as your hometown, address, workplace, etc.

              You can remove your last name (or even your entire name) so that new Snapchat friends only know you by your first name. Tap Display Name in the settings to make this change.

              In the Birthday section, there is an option to disable Birthday Party so that on your birthday, Snapchat won’t put a cake next to your name, thus preventing users from knowing that information.

              Something else that’s considered fundamental to your identity on Snapchat is your username. Anyone who knows your username can add you as a friend, and the same goes for your Snapcode.

              Do not share these items with anyone unless you want them to add you as a friend. If this information goes public, you’re bound to get lots of messages.

              Suppress Notifications From Prying Eyes

              Notifications will appear on the lock screen of your device and pop up as alerts unless you edit their behavior. You’ll want to make this change if you don’t want just anyone who looks at your phone to see who is sending you Snaps.

              Open Notifications from the settings to see all the options. To disable all Snapchat notifications, simply remove the box next to Enable Notifications.

              If you want finer control over what Snapchat notifies you about, you can edit the other alert settings, such as for when someone tags you in a Snap, if you have yet to open a message from someone, when you get a Snapchat call, etc.

              Another way to manage Snapchat notifications is on a per-friend basis. Tap-and-hold on the friend silence just that one person’s Snaps without affecting your other friends’ settings.

              Make It Harder for People to Contact You

              Most Snapchat users probably welcome strangers – there are conversations to be made, new friends to be had, and lots of time to waste sending random pictures to random people. If this isn’t why you use Snapchat, it’s best you take note of all of the different ways people can locate you on Snapchat so that you can block those access points.

              Open the Mobile Number and Email settings and disable the Let others find me option in both areas so that random Snapchatters (or even friends) can’t find you by searching for your number or email.

              Scroll down to Contact Me and change it to My Friends so that you don’t get Snaps from people you don’t know.

              The other option includes literally everyone, meaning that if someone has your username or Snapcode, they can send you images and video, start chats, and even call you directly without your approval.

              Tap Show Me in Quick Add and remove the box next to that option. When enabled, this feature lets friends of friends see that you’re using Snapchat, which is a massive privacy risk if you’re not interested in making new Snapchat friends.

              Another big concern you should have about your privacy on Snapchat is revealing where you are. That’s right! Snapchat is also a location tracker app, but only if you let it.

              Tap My Location and either enable Ghost Mode or choose specific friends that should have access to your physical location.

              If there’s a pesky user that keeps adding you on Snapchat, then none of the above will really help. To stop him or her from harassing you, just block them. To do that, tap their face and use the three-dotted menu on the upper-right side of the screen to Block and/or Report them.

              Clear Local Data

              Snapchat can retain your search history and chat details long after you performed them. If you share your phone with others or you’re afraid someone will find these details if they use your device, it’s important to know how to clean up these privacy holes.

              Before going any further, especially if you’ve added lots of people to it, take a quick breather and review who will get the Snap. To do that, tap the names at the bottom of the screen (not the blue arrow).

              When you select the names, you’re given a clean list of all the friends who will receive your Snap. From there, you can tap any friend to remove them from the list. Just remember that once you tap that second blue arrow, the message will send, and you can’t reverse it!

              Restrict Who Can See Your Stories

              A Story is like a public Snap to all what you’re up to, new products you’re selling, etc. If you want only certain friends to be able to see your Snapchat Stories, you need to learn how to make private Stories.

              In the settings, under View My Story, is an option to restrict who can see your Snapchat Stories. Pick Friends Only or Custom to choose specific friends.

              Another way to share Stories with specific people only is during the Snap itself. Instead of choosing friends to share it with, tap Private Story at the top of the page and then select some people to share it with. Friends not selected will not see the Story.

              In the Inbox or any folder, select the Filter button.

              Choose to filter by any of All messages, Unread, Flagged, Attachments, or @Mentions Me. @Mentions Me is a feature in desktop and web Outlook that works just like @mentions in social media apps.

              3. Sync Phone Contacts With the Outlook App

              By default, your phone contacts aren’t synced with the Outlook app. 

              On the Outlook home screen, select the Settings gear icon.

              Select the account to sync with Outlook Contacts.

              Scroll to Sync contacts and use the slider switch to turn it on. The color of the switch will change.

              6. Turn Focused Inbox Off or On

              The focused inbox is something you either love or hate. There’s no in-between, it seems. 

              Go to Settings and scroll to Focused Inbox, then select the sliding button to turn it off or on.

              7. Turn Organize By Thread Off or On

              Just like the Focused Inbox, organizing emails by conversation thread is a divisive topic.

              Go to Settings and scroll to Organize email by thread, then select the sliding button to turn it off or on.

              8. Set or Change Swipe Options

              Go to Settings then scroll to and select Swipe options.

              Select Change or Set Up if it’s shown.

              A slider will open showing the options: Delete, Archive, Mark as read, Move to folder, Flag, Snooze, Read & archive, and None. Choose one.

              You’ll see the option is set.

              Swiping right on an email will now delete it.

              9. Sort Contacts by First or Last Name

              Go to Settings then scroll to and select Sort by.

              Choose either First name or Surname for last name.

              10. Set an Automatic Reply

              Go to Settings then scroll to and select an account. This only works on Office 365 or Microsoft Exchange accounts.

              Select Automatic replies.

              On the right, select the slider button to turn automatic replies on or off.

              Choose either Reply to everyone or Reply only to my organisation, then select whether to use Different messages for my organisation and external senders or not.

              Create or edit your automatic replies, then select the check mark in the top-right corner to set the changes.

              Confirm the change by selecting OK.

              11. Customize Favorites Folders

              Got a lot of folders? You can set your favorites so they’re the first folders you see.

              Select the Home icon and select the pencil icon across from Folders.

              Scroll to your favorite folders and select the star icon to make them favorites.

              It shows your favorites at the top of the screen. Select the checkmark to commit the change.

              Now your favorite folders are at the top of the list.

              12. Change Outlook App To Dark or Light Theme

              Go to Settings then scroll to and select Appearance.

              Choose between Light, Dark, or System themes. The change applies immediately. The word Colours in the bottom-right corner doesn’t appear to do anything.

              13. Add Other Fun Calendars to the Outlook App

              You probably knew you could add other peoples’ calendars to yours, but did you know you can add sports, tv, and other apps’ calendars?

              In Outlook, select the calendar icon near the bottom-right corner. Notice the number in it is today’s date.

              Scroll to and select Interesting Calendars.

              It presents a list of sports and TV shows to choose from. For this example, we’ll choose Sports.

              Select from the list the type of sport to follow.

              You can choose to follow the whole tournament or league, or individual teams, by selecting the blue cross icon.

              To add calendars from other apps, go back to the add calendar page and select Calendar apps.

              Choose from the list of apps available to you by selecting the blue cross icon.

              14. Use Add-ins from Other Services in Outlook App

              Integration is part of why Outlook is so popular. You can use add-ins from popular services like GoToMeeting, Box, Slack for Outlook, Trello, and many more.

              Go to Settings then scroll to and select Add-ins.

              Find the add-ins you want and select the blue cross to add them.

              15. Change Calendar View In Outlook App

              The calendar defaults to an entire month view. That’s a lot of information packed on a small screen. You can change that. This only works in portrait mode.

              In Calendar, select the View icon in the top-right corner.

              Choose from the different views: Agenda, Day, 3 Day, or Month.

              Agenda View – Shows all upcoming events.

              Day View – Note the current time shows in a different color.

              3 Day View – Shows today and the next 2 days, plus calendar items.

              Month (Default) – Can get cluttered and hard to read.

              16. Set Do Not Disturb In Outlook App

              Outlook is about getting things done. Yet it can also be a distraction, so learn how to use its Do Not Disturb features.

              On the All Accounts tab, select the bell icon.

              Choose your preferences. You can only choose one Timed event at a time, however, you can mix and match the Scheduled events. Select the check mark in the top-right corner to commit the changes.

              Back in the All Accounts tab, the bell is red and shows zZ, and all accounts that are in Do Not Disturb mode have the red zZ.

              17. Use Message Actions In The Outlook App

              You knew you could use actions in single-message view, but did you know you can use actions from the Inbox view?

              In the folder view, long tap a message to use an action on. The Delete, Archive, and Move to Folder actions will show. To get more actions, select the 3 dots menu.

              The 3 dots menu shows the actions: Move to Focused inbox, Report junk, Ignore conversation, Mark as unread, Flag, Snooze, and Select all.

              Report junk tells Microsoft the e-mail is garbage and their spam AI will learn to block spam messages.

              18. See Items from Your Favorite Contacts First

              Everyone is important, yet some people are just a little more important in your life. Here’s how you can make sure you see their emails first.

              In Contacts, select a favorite contact.

              In their contact card, select the star in the top-right corner. Now they’re a favorite. Any Outlook items from them will show up before other people.

              This only applies to some of the newer Samsung Android devices. The Outlook app is optimized for use with Samsung Dex. DeX allows you to connect to an HDMI or Miracast-enabled monitor and pair a keyboard and mouse for a desktop-style experience.
