Interested in beer, but are somewhat confused by all of the styles and technical jargon that encrusts the current craft movement? Computer science graduate student Kevin Jamieson has created an experimental app that will help you navigate your next encounter at the snooty beer bar.
Jamieson studies machine learning, but wanted to construct a practical implementation of a process called active ranking on an iPad, so he built the Beer Mapper. How it works: The app presents two different beers; the user taps on the one that he or she prefers. After a few iterations of this, the app builds a “heat map” of beer styles by user preference. This should, in theory, be able to then recommend beers from the database that correspond to those calculated preferences.
Constructing the mapper involved a number of steps. First, Jamieson collected the reviews for about 10,000 beers (each beer must have at least 50 reviews) on chúng tôi He had his software parse each review and weight a series of key words that would (ostensibly) accurately describe the beer. Each set of keywords was turned into a vector that represented the beer as a whole, then the software looked for the nearest neighbors in Euclidian distance for each beer vector. Doing so allowed him to delineate where one beer style ends and another begins. Jamieson then overlaid bitterness data (IBUs), color (SRM data) and “maltiness” (amount of unfermented sugar in the beer by comparing final gravity to original gravity) onto the spatial map of beer styles. This is where I get a bit skeptical, to be honest, because two of those criteria — bitterness and maltiness — have data values that don’t necessarily correlate well with drinker experience. And bitterness doesn’t correlate with “hoppiness;” problematic because I know a number of beer drinkers who don’t mind a bitter beer, but can’t stand a really grassy or resinous hop-bomb. To be fair, Jamieson does admit that the “maltiness” value is somewhat dubious, and the various keyword weightings should help address the hop-bomb category.

The question of whether or not you should wait for the AM5 socket boils down to a few key factors. First, what it is you’re planning on buying now, and second what you expect to get by waiting for the AM5. Down below we will take a look at what you can expect to gain from the AM5 socket in terms of an upgrade path and the argument against waiting for the next best thing.
Nobody really knows when AM5 is coming out.
There is, as of yet, no official word on an AM5 release date, with AMD having remained conspicuously mum on the subject and more than willing to let the rumor pot stir (almost as if only to further provide evidence of a rumor mill’s worth). With many guesses in 2023 and early 2023 that the 5000 series would debut on the AM5, and seeing how that turned out, it’s important to remember that it’s all just speculation best ingested with a healthy tablespoon of salt.
That said, the current estimate is that the AM5 is likely to release sometime between late 2023 and early 2023. Remember this is nothing more than a general consensus achieved through estimates based on AMD’s previous track record of release schedules. AM5 is just a socket, but the tantalizing carrot it dangles before the consumer is the prospect of a virgin upgrade path that can last for generations to come like the AM4 did. If you are consternated, unable to decide whether you should build now on an AM4 or wait for the AM5 to come out and get in on the ground floor of a brand new upgrade path, there are a few subordinate factors worth your consideration. Firstly, what are the new components coming out, when will they be coming out, and what will their capabilities be relative to current-gen counterparts.

The most exciting feature lying in wait for consumers has to be the Zen 4 microarchitecture, roughly expected sometime in 2023, but currently inhabiting only the nightly dreams of tech enthusiasts everywhere. Little is known for certain about AMD’s upcoming evolution in microarchitecture, but the rumor mill is currently overclocking like there’s no tomorrow to produce all sorts of promises; many predictions are suggesting a performance boost as magnificent as 40% over Zen 3, with a 29% uptick in IPC. So, all things considered, Zen 4 is one hell of a honeypot for those considering playing the waiting game and the one worth thinking about most.
To Build or Not to Build
We say get building.
Don’t waste your time waiting on the next best thing because there will always be a next best thing. If you do shell out for the current lineup of beasts on the AM4, you can rest assured they will remain beastly for some time to come. The 5000 series is the one last hurrah of the AM4 but it will easily last for a few years to come. Not only will most of the 5000 series be comfortable with whatever you can throw at them for some time, but you will also save a lot of money making purchases on current tech rather than freshly released next-gen components.
There will always be something around the corner that feels worth waiting for, including several years from now when you are in the market for another motherboard again.
How Is Guinness Making Its Beer Vegan?
If you’re a vegan or strict vegetarian and you’ve done your research, you have probably been steering clear of Guinness. That’s because, in order to make the 256-year-old Irish stout many of us know and love, brewers use a product called “isinglass” that is made from dried fish bladders. Now, after years of pressure from consumers, Guinness has announced that it will no longer use isinglass to filter its beer, and plans to build a new filtration system for that purpose in 2023. What sort of filtration system might that be, and why has it taken this long to start using it?
It’s important to know why Guinness needs to be filtered in the first place. During the beer’s fermentation, yeast gobbles up its starchy sugar source (all beers use barley for this, though a few add wheat as well) to carbonate the beer and create alcohol. But after the yeast has done its job, most beers have some remaining polyphenols, micronutrients left over from the barley or hops, which can make the beer look cloudy or turbid. “U.S. consumers would think there’s something wrong with a cloudy-looking beer—they may think it’s spoiled,” says Karl Siebert, a professor of biochemistry in the food sciences department at Cornell University. “It wouldn’t hurt anyone, and it doesn’t change the texture much. It’s just unappealing.”
Most beers go through some sort of filtration process before they’re served. For beers like cask ales and Guinness’ trademark stout, these compounds eventually settle out, but brewers have long looked for a way to speed up this process.
That’s where fining agents come in. Substances like gelatins or isinglass (a protein extracted from dried swim bladders of tropical fish) help form complexes between the unique types of cloudy proteins and leftover yeast in cask ales, which makes them heavy enough to settle to the bottom. Importantly, these fining agents speed up the settling out process without changing the beer’s overall taste or chemistry.
So Guinness brewers have used isinglass, possibly for all of the beer’s 256-year history, to bring the non-cloudy beer more quickly to drinkers’ pints. But in recent years, the vegetarian and vegan communities have demanded that the company drop isinglass from its production process.
For years the company has been looking for a way to satisfy vegans’ demands without alienating consumers used to Guinness’ clarity. And now it appears that it has found one. “We are now pleased to have identified a new process through investment in a state-of-the-art filtration system at St James’s Gate which, once in place, will remove the use of isinglass in the brewing process,” a Guinness spokesperson told Popular Science via email.
Since the spokesperson didn’t get into detail about this filtration system, we asked Siebert about other filtration methods used in the beer industry. One is simply another kind of fining agent called tannic acid (found in lots of different foods, the same compound that makes wine taste dry)—chemically, it works differently than the other fining agents, but it achieves the same end goal of speeding up the settling out process.
Unless Guinness has discovered a totally groundbreaking filtration method, the company is likely using one or both of these methods, Siebert says. “But it’s pretty hard to come up with something that works as well as a gelatin or isinglass,” he adds. It’s possible that Guinness is spending a little more on its filtration process so that its beer is clear and vegan-friendly, but that might actually make sense from a business perspective, if thousands of vegans worldwide suddenly become Guinness drinkers.
