Wix is integrating Google’s URL Inspection API directly into the new Wix Site Inspection Tool, providing users with an easy way to achieve and maintain a good search presence.

Users can now view insights into how Google is indexing a site and debug technical issues like structured data on a sitewide basis.

Search Console URL Inspection API

In January 2023, Google announced a new Application Programming Interface (API) that enables the creation of tools that can access URL inspection data.

This is called the Search Console URL Inspection API.

The launch of this API was important because it allowed users to create custom ways to access and use valuable data on how a site is performing in Google.

Google’s January announcement of the API explained why it is important:

“The Search Console APIs are a way to access data outside of Search Console, through external applications and products.

With the new URL Inspection API, we’re providing a new tool for developers to debug and optimize their pages.

You can request the data Search Console has about the indexed version of a URL; the API will return the indexed information currently available in the URL Inspection tool.”

Users of Wix now have access to this data within a Wix dashboard.

Nati Elimelech, Head of SEO at Wix, explained what Wix users would be able to do:

“The tool will report any index status that Google is reporting, sometimes with easier language to understand.

For example, it could be “crawled but not indexed” or “blocked by robots.txt” etc. Each index status detail will have a “learn more” link to an article explaining it and mentioning the common reasons why it could happen, with links to more relevant explanations.

We also tell the users exactly what app and type of page each URL is so they can easily know where they need to take action.”

Google’s API also helps debug structured data, which is super important. Proper structured data makes websites eligible to have their webpages displayed in what Google terms enhancements to search.

Enhancements to search are a special kind of search result that stands out. They are also known as Rich Results.

Google can sometimes read the information on a page and algorithmically decide to include it as a rich result.

But using structured data makes it easier for Google to do.

Consequently, it’s vital to use structured data to become eligible for enhanced search results that make a webpage result stand out and attract more site visitors.

Google’s structured data tool uses words like “warning,” which gives the false impression that something is wrong. But that’s not always the case. Google marks potential issues with a “warning” for an optional variable.

Wix’s implementation of the structured data debugging put the warnings into the proper context by naming it an “optional fix.”

Elimelech confirmed that Wix’s implementation of the API would help debug structured data:

“Absolutely, if a required field is missing, it will show as “issue” in the table and in the panel you will see which field is missing.

Users will see the exact fields that are missing in the structured data markup and its severity – including issues that require action, or just optional fields that can be added to enrich the markup.

If it’s a recommended field that is missing you will see “optional fix” in the table and in the panel of the exact fields that are missing.

We adjusted some of the language to better reflect the actual impact on the users’ site, so we changed what may feel like alarming warnings for recommended fields to “optional fix” so users will understand that it is a recommendation and not something that is making their pages ineligible for rich results on Google’s SERPs.”

Solving Indexing Issues

The new Wix URL Inspection tool will also be able to call attention to indexing issues, which will give businesses an early warning to fix something before it becomes a major problem.

According to Wix:

“With this tool, users can debug any issue that they would get if they manually used Search Console’s inspect URL tool.

Users can understand the index status of their pages in Google and the specific reason for it.

For each issue, we have additional resources to help guide users.

These articles provide in depth explanations about each response, the possible reasons for it and how to fix it.

Users will also be able to debug their mobile readiness and their structure data status.”

Google Chrome Can Now Detect Url Typos

Entering a URL for a specific website is so easy for most Internet users that the simple action is often taken for granted. But not everybody has the mobility or capability to do so and can find it challenging, especially on devices with small text or address bars. Google is assisting those with accessibility limitations by making several changes to the Chrome browser, including checking for URL typos.

Making Browsing Easier

To prevent this from happening, Google introduced a few changes to its Chrome browser, including the ability to spellcheck a website’s URL. When Chrome thinks there could be a typo, it will suggest websites based on the corrections.

“This increases accessibility for people with dyslexia, language learners, and anyone who makes typos by making it easier to get to previously visited websites despite spelling errors,” Google explained in a blog post.

The URL typo checker is initially available for Chrome on desktop computers, but the function will roll out for mobile phones soon.

As part of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Google also released an update for Live Caption, which uses artificial intelligence to provide real-time captions for any sound produced on your Android phone. Similar to the way Apple’s iPhone can speak for you during calls, Google’s Live Caption lets you “type back responses during calls and have the response read aloud to the other caller.”

More Sophisticated Apple/Google Contact Tracing Api May Mean More Alerts

An update by Apple and Google to a more sophisticated version of their joint coronavirus contact tracing API should mean more accurate risk assessments by the apps which use it.

In the UK, however – and likely elsewhere – that may result in more people being told they are at risk and being asked to self-isolate …

Original contact tracing API

At its core, the Apple/Google contact tracing API continually checks for Bluetooth signals from nearby devices.

Two main factors are used to assess the risk level of a contact. First, the strength of the Bluetooth signal. The stronger the signal, the closer the device is assumed to be. Second, the length of time the device is within close range. The greater the time, the greater the exposure risk. You are assumed to be at significant risk if you are within two meters of someone for at least 15 minutes.

The full details are much more complex than this, but that’s the essence of the approach.

However, because a variety of factors can impact the strength of Bluetooth signals – such as the difference between a phone in your hand and one buried in a bag – there is a fair degree of uncertainty involved in assessing the risk level. If you play too safe, then people will be asked to self-isolate too frequently, which will result in lower compliance.

To guard against this, contact tracing apps look for a relatively high threshold to be met before a contact is assessed as a risky one.

The more sophisticated version

In the latest version of the API, a specific check is made for rapidly-fluctuating signal strength. If a contact appears to rapidly change distance – say from one meter to eight meters to five meters – then that is flagged as unreliable data. That can happen when signals bounce off walls inside a train car, for example.

In this case, the mode 2 version applies new algorithms to be applied to that fluctuating data to more accurately estimate the true likely distance. That means that there should be fewer false positives.

But that may result in more alerts

A more sophisticated API means greater confidence in the accuracy of the risk assessments – which means that the threshold for registering a contact can be reduced without registering too many false positives.

An update to England and Wales’ contact-tracing app is set to serve more self-isolation alerts.

Gaby Appleton – who recently took over NHS Covid-19 – said this was being done to help tackle the spread of the coronavirus. The change coincides with a change to the app’s algorithm to make its contact-matches more reliable.

The Health Secretary previously voiced concern about people being told to stay at home because of false alerts. As a result, the app had required a higher risk score to be calculated before triggering a self-isolate command.

The new director of product for Test and Trace said her team was so confident in the improvements made to distance estimates that it had moved the level at which notifications were triggered even lower than first planned.

“The update to the risk threshold is expected to increase the number of people asked to self-isolate by the app, having been in close contact with someone who tested positive,” Gaby Appleton blogged. “We believe lowering the threshold is necessary to reduce the R rate and break the chain of transmission.”

It is likely that other countries and states will take the same approach. This means that your chances of being asked to self-isolate will be higher, but this is likely to be with good reason.

Europe has started making its apps inter-operable between countries, while the same is true of some US states.

What Is a Google Maps API Key?

How to Create API Keys

To create an API Key, you will navigate to APIs & Service, then choose Credentials in the dropdown. It will take you to this page where you can create the API key.

Once created, adding some restrictions to your key is recommended.

Google has a list of best practices for adding restrictions to keep your keys safe and secure, such as deleting API keys that are no longer needed and using caution when regenerating keys.

Adding the API Key to Your Requests

Once the key has been created and restrictions are added, you are ready to place it on your site.

An API key is required for every Maps JavaScript API request and should be loaded via a script tag.

This may be added to either your HTML file, or added dynamically to a separate JavaScript file.

Google recommends reviewing both approaches so you can choose what is appropriate based on how your code is structured.

Static Versus Dynamic Maps

You have the ability to add two different types of maps to your pages: static and dynamic maps.

Static maps just display the map as an image. You are not able to zoom or adjust the map, but the cost is much lower.

Dynamic maps, on the other hand, are not only interactive but customizable, as well. Dynamic maps also have the ability to have a branded logo pin.

The cost difference between the two map types can be significant, with dynamic maps at $7 per 1,000 requests versus $2 per 1,000 for static maps.

If your pages generate a lot of traffic, this could be a significant cost.

If your costs are currently very high from dynamic maps, it might be worth considering a static map instead.

Places and Routes

Implementing the Google Maps API Key on your site means there are other features available to you, as well, such as Places and Routes. Both of these can improve your customer’s experience.

To get started with developing the Directions API, set up your Google Cloud project. Then, review this list of all parameters when building your Directions API HTTP request.

The following place requests are available for your business, according to Google:

Place Search: Returns a list of places based on the user’s location or search string.

Place Details: Returns more detailed information about the location, including reviews.

Place Photos: provides access to millions of place-related photos stored in Google’s Place database.

WordPress Vs Wix: Core Web Vitals Winner

Google engineer Rick Viscomi tweeted that the Core Web Vitals Technology Report was updated to include July 2023 data from CrUX and HTTPArchive. The data showed how much WordPress and Wix continue to improve in all three Core Web Vitals metrics, FID, LCP and CLS.

There can only be one winner this month.

CrUX Data

CrUX stands for the Chrome User Experience report. It is a report of actual user experience and is where the core web vitals (CWV) information comes from.

The data is collected from Chrome browsers that have opted into contributing their information.

This information is what is called Field Data.

First Input Delay (FID) WordPress versus Wix

First Input Delay (FID) is a measurement of how long it takes for a website to become interactive in terms of buttons, links, dropdowns and other interactive elements.

WordPress is the clear winner over the Wix publishing platform in terms of the First Input Delay metric.

WordPress FID performance improved by six percentage points between May and July 2023, going from 89.4% in May receiving a good FID score to a whopping 95.71% of publishers experiencing a good FID score by July.

That’s a significant performance improvement for WordPress and shows that the WordPress development team is making progress on improving the page experience for users visiting sites published on WordPress.

Wix on the other hand started out as the leader in May, with 93.79% of publishers enjoying a good FID score. But WordPress overtook Wix in July as Wix only improved the FID score by less than one percentage point.

Wix went from 93.79% in May to a marginally better 94.6% in July, losing the crown of FID champ to WordPress.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is a measurement of how long the main content takes to load and become ready for a user to interact with it.

WordPress showed a minimal improvement in the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) metric, rising by less than a percentage point, from 27.51% in May to 28.11% in July.

Wix on the other hand improved by a more impressive 4%, going from 29.16% in May to 33.43% in July.

That means that, as measured by CrUX, 33.43% of Wix publishers offered a fast LCP page experience versus 28.11% on WordPress.

Wix publishers have a five percentage point lead over WordPress publishers.

While Wix gets the nod for LCP scores, WordPress is virtually neck and neck with Wix.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): WordPress vs Wix

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is a measurement of how much page elements shift around while a page is downloading.

This is an important metric because pages with elements that jump around can quickly frustrate users and cause them to bounce back to the search results.

WordPress CLS Scores

The WordPress CLS scores actually deteriorated between May and July 2023, sinking from 60.52% in May to 59.94% in July.

WordPress CLS performance had a less than 1% negative degradation.

Wix actually improved their scores by over 7%.

Perhaps even more stunning, while 59.94% of WordPress publishers have a passing CLS score in July, a whopping 80.49% of Wix publishers enjoyed a good CLS score.

With an over 20 percentage point lead, Wix is the winner in the contest between Wix and WordPress over which offers the best CLS scores.

What Causes Cumulative Layout Shift?

It’s possible that the way publishers use WordPress is responsible for the significantly poorer CLS performance compared to the Wix platform.

The report shows that WordPress is steadily improving its CWV performance but at a modest pace of only 1% per month.

WordPress improved by only 2% between May and July 2023.

The following are the percentages of websites published with WordPress that received good scores.

Wix showed impressive improvement between May and July 2023, achieving a six percentage point improvement between May and July 2023.

WordPress’ poor CLS performance (relative to Wix’s significantly higher scores) dragged down the overall CWV score for WordPress.

Facts are Clear: Wix Has Higher CWV Scores

Facts are facts: More publishers on the Wix platform achieve overall good Core Web Vitals scores than publishers using WordPress.

For the month of July 2023, 19.1% of WordPress publishers achieved good CWV scores while 28.5% of Wix publishers enjoyed good CWV scores.

That’s a nearly ten percentage point better performance of Wix over WordPress.

WordPress is an open source content management system (CMS) with thousands of third party developers who contribute themes and plugins that may negatively affect the page experience performance.

Wix is Improving at a Fast Pace

The Wix approach to proprietary closed system shows a faster rate of improvement than WordPress. From May to July, the Wix Core Web Vitals scores jumped by six percentage points, going from 22.6% to 28.5%.

WordPress experienced an improvement but that improvement was by a modest two percentage points, crawling from 17.1% in May to a modestly better 19.1% improvement in July.

Again it must be said that because WordPress is an open source system, individual publishers can create websites with faster performance scores than Wix. Publishers on the Wix platform don’t have the freedom to improve their performance scores.

But in the Wix publishing ecosystem, having little control over web performance is feature and not a bug for publishers who want to focus on business and not on babysitting the underlying technology.

Wix Wins… But Not By Much

But WordPress is not that far behind.
